SHSHL Varsity ‘AA’ Snapshot
Central Bucks East head coach Ken Latchum was not exactly expecting to prepare for the upcoming SHSHL playoffs with a 4-2 loss to Truman last week. It was first conference win of the season for the Tigers.
“We outshot them something like 45-15, but we couldn’t put the puck in the net,” said Latchum. “That has been the biggest problem with this team all year – finding a pure goal scorer.
“But this is a very young team and a loss like this won’t bother them,” added Latchum. “We have CB West coming up this week and that is always a huge rivalry game for the kids with bragging rights on the line.
“We lost to them 5-1 in the Thanksgiving Eve game,” continued Latchum. “But we are a much better team now than when we played them the first time.”
The SHSHL Varsity ‘AA’ eight team playoffs should include Central Bucks East once the regular season has concluded. The Patriots are currently tied for seventh place in the standings.
“It has been a few years since we have been in the playoffs,” said Latchum who returned to the CB East bench this season. “We are going to have to go against a CB South, or a CR South, and that is going to be a huge challenge for a young team like this one.
“But we have some outstanding freshmen that are going to benefit from the experience of playing good teams in the playoffs,” added Latchum who guided the Patriots to nine consecutive playoff appearances in his first stint behind the bench. “Especially for the goaltender.”
CB East features a pair of freshman goaltenders in Chris McIntyre and Matt Ogonowski with McIntyre earning most of the minutes this season.
“Richard Keiser, Matt Cipriano, and Chris Mangiacapre are all very good freshmen defensemen,” said Latchum. “And Colin Quinn has shown a great deal of character as our senior captain.
“We talked a little bit about playoffs, but we really want to concentrate on the little things,” added Latchum. “We want them to know what it takes to be a playoff team, but all we want to focus on now is CB West.”

SHSHL Varsity ‘A’ Snapshot
Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Josh Aiello knows all too well the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
Last season the Colonials were SHSHL American Conference champions with a 14-1 record and an invitation to the prestigious Flyers Cup. This season PW has struggled with a 2-10 conference record, but Aiello has nothing but good things to say about his 2017-2018 Colonials.
“I’m very proud of the guys,” said Aiello. “They have shown up and worked hard. They never have their heads down and give 100% effort.
“Whenever we fall down we get right back up,” added Aiello. “We have had some issues with injuries this year, but we are looking forward to a strong off season.”
Sophomore Dean Keller has been lights out for the Colonials this season. Keller is the sixth leading scorer on the conference and has scored 30 goals this season.
“Dean is a fantastic player and a good person as well,” said Aiello. “He can put the puck in the back of the net and competes hard every game. It will be great to have him to build around next year.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh will be losing a core of seniors this season. That list includes captain Steve Fandozzi, assistant captain Daniel Isackman, assistant captain Stephen Long, Brandon Pham, Kaye Galie, and Owen Keogh.
“This was a great group of seniors,” said Aiello.
And this group of Plymouth Whitemarsh players is a great group off the ice as well.
“We are having a game with Upper Moreland on February 22nd at Wintersport to benefit Team Cancer America,” said Aiello. “It is a student run organization, and it shows the players that there is a life outside of ice hockey.
“It has been a tough year, record-wise, but we will be back,” added Aiello. “Ice hockey seasons tend to be circular – our turn is coming.”
