CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 49, EASTON 37
For three quarters, it was anyone’s game.
The Patriots led by two after one quarter and still led by two at halftime, 18-16. Nothing changed in a third quarter that saw the two teams exchange baskets, and the Patriots went into the final quarter with a 36-34 lead.
That’s when everything changed as the Patriots closed it out with a 13-3 tear to earn their third win of the week. Jess Lockwood scored five points in the frame.
Key players: Natalie Berndt led a balanced attack with 15 points while Jess Lockwood – despite battling foul woes – added 14. Both had four 3-pointers. Haley Moran also finished in double figures with 11. Emma Penecale led the Patriots under the boards with six rebounds, and Payton Williams had four steals to ignite the defense.
Central Bucks East coach Liz Potash: “We were looking forward to this game. We knew Easton had a good team coming in, and they had two games this week that were pretty lopsided scores. We were watching film, and it’s a little bit hard to tell, but they have good size and a lot of kids that they returned from last year’s team. They had good success last year, so we were excited for the game.”
–The game: “It was pretty much close the whole way. At the end of the first quarter, we had a little bit of a lead. They made some shots. We were up two at the half. We went on a little run in the third. They answered and we were up two going into the fourth and then we outscored them 13-3 in the fourth. It was a good game for us.
“Unfortunately, Jess Lockwood was in foul trouble, which we’re not used to. That’s very uncommon for her, so we played large stretches without her. To be able to beat a quality opponent without a big of a piece of our team as Jess – I thought it was really impressive.
“I think Easton, like Chester, is going to win a lot of games. It was a really good quality game for us today as well. Coming out of our first week with all sorts of different styles of play and competition just really helped us move forward.”
–Props: “Delaney Long did great stuff for us off the bench. I thought Payton Williams did a really nice job, especially on defense today. It was really well-rounded.
“Natalie Berndt went 3-for-4 at the line at the end of the game to seal it. Of course, her defense is always top-notch. We had her matched up, and she had given up zero points at the half. They had another kid that had five at half, so we switched her, and then she held her to three. Those kinds of things – they’re just huge pieces.
“Without playing as many minutes, Jess still had four 3s for us in a 14-point night. She had to play their big kid who doesn’t score a lot, but she’s got big size and facilitates a lot, and Jess was able to defend her well.
“That’s where I really give Delaney Long a lot of credit because Delaney is severely undersized to play a six-footer, but Delaney did it tonight when she needed to, and it was huge.”
–Bigger than the game: “We ran a coat drive this week for the Ronald McDonald House, and we advertised it to all of our opponents as well. Easton showed up, and every single player showed up with a coat today to donate, so we ended up donating 12 trash bags full of coats, but definitely by far got the most today.
“We thanked Easton and already reached out to them again, but we were just so impressed. We were blown away that they did that for us today. That’s really, really cool. We like to be involved in other organizations that highlight there is a whole world out there outside of basketball, so to be able to come together for that cause is huge.
“I was really impressed with Easton. That was really classy. I said to their coach, ‘Thank you so much.’ He said, ‘Honestly, it was all the girls. When you reached out to us, the girls said they wanted to do it.’ That’s amazing.”
Up next: Central Bucks East (3-0) will travel to Central Bucks South for its SOL opener Tuesday.

Sparked by nine points from Alyssa Thomas and seven from Sammie Haws, Pennsbury led 18-11 after one quarter.
In a 24-point second quarter, the Falcons took 21 trips to the foul line, connecting on 16 of them to go into halftime with a 42-20 lead.

Pennsbury coach Frank Sciolla: “Today we enjoyed a rare non-league home game and played against several girls that live in the district, so there was a familiarity among both teams. The key with Egan is containing Bri Jackson, and once again Milan Reeves was equal to the task by alternately containing and speeding her up.
“Today we were not tremendous in shot selection and understandingly shot way too many 3s, but I get it coming off Thursday’s game
“We were able to match their physicality, and we were again very solid on defense. We had to navigate foul trouble, and that will be important for us.
“We found Sammi Haws several times and Joley had some nice finishes
“Grace Schaufler was extremely active off the bench as was Bella Stewart, and Keira Socha is doing an excellent job filling different roles
“Shea Quenzer added a career high nine points with some great basket attacks.”

In a preview of things to come, the Vikings connected on five 3s in the opening quarter and took a 22-12 lead. They took a 32-22 lead into halftime and put the game out of reach with an 18-9 third quarter that included three 3-pointers.

William Tennent coach Laura Whitney: “It was a tough loss today. We went up against a really good team, who shot the lights out. I thought we battled and played hard, but it’s hard to win when your opponent makes 15 3s. Perk Valley plays the right way and with such pace. We got lost on a few rotations and were slow to close out, and they made us pay.
“It stinks to lose like this, but sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other team for how well they played. It’s a great opportunity to learn from today and it will benefit us later in the season.”
