PENNSBURY 8, BENSALEM 3
(Submitted by Pennsbury field hockey)
The Falcons had to wait almost a full week between games and were chomping at the bit to get out on their home field and compete. Their preparation during that time was focused on honing technical and tactical skills in order to be ready for a very hungry Bensalem team.
“Bensalem always comes ready to play and has caught us with our guard down many times in the past, capitalizing on their fierce competitive power to put us on our heels,” Pennsbury coach Traci Curtis said. “Their
program has continued to grow each season and it’s great to see the progress.
“Our preparation was purposeful. We were laser focused on doing what it would take to get the win today and that included just playing our style and getting out of the gate with strength.”
Pennsbury did just that when Ryan Burdette landed a backhand shot over the goalie’s head at the 10:30 mark in the first quarter putting PHS up 1-0.
“We had a great passing sequence up the right side that ended up on Burdette’s stick and she went for the reverse – it was a great choice. Our girls set a dominant tone for the game and came out working the ball beautifully all over the field as a solid unit,” said Curtis.
The Owls had an answer four minutes later on a really well-executed penalty corner and evened the score 1-1. Three minutes later, the orange and black earned a penalty corner and Burdette struck again.
“The corner play was broken up, but they shifted in response,” Curtis said. “Lilly Alon received a misplaced pass and put the ball right on cage where Burdette collected the rebound and put it in for her second goal of the quarter.”
The Falcons went up 2-1 for a short time until Ava Pinto tipped in a shot from Cailyn Reilly on another PHS corner sending them into the second quarter up 3-1.
Bensalem held Pennsbury defensively for the first seven minutes of the second quarter until Abby Iacona opened the flood gates, scoring on a great heads up rebound off the goalie’s pads to make it 4-1.
“We were strong in the circle today, doing a nice job of filling the spaces, getting rebounds and giving ourselves repeated opportunities on cage with tons of pressure,” Curtis said.
Pennsbury added three more goals in the quarter to enter halftime up 7-1. Multiple players got their name in the books – Regan Rodriguez scored unassisted at the 5:31 mark when an Iacona shot got misplayed by the goalie. One minute later, Cailyn Reilly tallied her first goal of the game on a beautiful corner shot from the top. Lilly Alon finished off the half scoring her first of the game on an assist by Iacona.
Abby Iacona struck again soon after halftime weaving her way across the
cage to tally an unassisted goal for PHS and lighting up the scoreboard 8-1. That score remained going into the final fifteen minutes. You can’t ever go to sleep on Bensalem.
Curtis said, “The Owls don’t give up and work really well together to battle to the bitter end. They beat us in the fourth quarter, keeping us scoreless and tallying a couple for themselves.”
The Falcons’ scoring ended with eight, but Bensalem added two in their scorebook in the fourth bringing the final score to 8-3.
“It was a very offensive game for us as we controlled possession for much of the time, but I don’t want to minimize the effort of our defensive unit,” Curtis said. “They kept Bensalem scoreless for two entire quarters and stopped many opportunities all over the field.
“Defensive stops are the start of offensive pushes, and our D unit does a great job using high level field hockey IQ to set us up for success from the backfield. It was a good game today, but we are never satisfied and that is what will keep us powered along the way.”
Up next: Pennsbury will travel to Patriot Division peer, Council Rock North, on Thursday for their first meeting of the season. Bensalem will be on the road at Council Rock South Thursday.

It was a special night at War Memorial Field Tuesday.
The Bucks were playing for a cause – to raise money for pediatric cancer, and they celebrated the Doylestown Athletic Association youth players in attendance by turning in a shutout performance against the visiting Indians.
Zola Morelli broke a scoreless tie with a goal during corner play, turning a pass from Claire Demmer into a goal.
That 1-0 lead stood until late in the fourth quarter when Heidi Schoenleber scored.
Souderton’s defense stood tall against a West offense that generated 21 shots. Sophomore goalie Rylee DeSimone turned away 17 shots in a stellar outing.
With the win, the Bucks upped their record to 6-0 on the season.

“It was a great night of field hockey – raising money for Pediatric cancer and celebrating the DAA youth players in the community. We dominated the game despite the low number of goals.
“Souderton’s defense played as a cohesive unit, making it difficult to score in free play and corners. We were patient and resilient and played good team field hockey to come away with the win.
“We have one more game vs East this week to finish off our first pass through our side of the SOL league. We will continue to work as a team and take one game at a time to achieve our goals.”

The score was 0-0 going into the second half, and the Bears were gaining confidence with every scoreless minute against perennial league champs New Hope.
In the first quarter, it was in our defensive circle a lot, but in the second quarter, we switched our lineup and were able to get pushes up the field and pressure New Hope below their 25. UM did a nice job keeping possession in our offensive end to keep New Hope from getting scoring chances.
Bears goalie Izzy Fisher had a breakout game. Izzy didn’t get a lot of varsity time last season and has had a few games with not much action, so today was her day to shine! She had 10 saves in the first half and five key clears to the side out of the circle.
In addition, the entire Bears’ defense was relentless against an onslaught of New Hope pressure in the third quarter. All season, we have been working on communication. We lost two seniors last year who were our “voice” in the backfield, so we have been asking defenders to work together and communicate more.
Today, Reese Purcell, Bridget Hess, Charlotte Russo, Hannah Gardner and Giana Morrison all put in time to work together as a UNIT! Throughout the game, they found their rhythm, gaining confidence by communicating, supporting and working together to keep New Hope from scoring. Our defensive effort in the circle was outstanding. Coaches, players on the sideline and even our fans were energized by the defensive stops and the way our defense continued to rise to the occasion!
In the midfield, Olivia Torres, Kourtney Malone, Gianna Jones and Harper Richmond were asked to play both ends of the field. They were getting back to support the defense, then maintaining possession and creating opportunities by making great passes to our forwards.
Forwards Soph Riehle, Taylor Pagano and MJ Reilly were also asked to play the whole field. There was no resting today! Then, when the forwards had the ball in the circle, they were working to get that shot. Riehle connected on a reverse shot from the left to tie the score with 46 seconds left in the third quarter. That goal gave the Bears momentum, and we believed that we had the ability to score again.
Unfortunately, mistakes led to a second goal for New Hope with 11 minutes left in the game. But the Bears played until the end, never giving up!
As a team, I think the biggest takeaway is that we now have confidence to play against higher level teams. The team proved that we can compete and if we play “our game.” WE can be a team that is tough to beat!
Izzy Fisher was our team standout! She was on the ground using her hand pads to deflect balls, using her clears to get the ball out of the circle. She finished with 27 saves in an outstanding outing! Bridget Hess, Reese Purcell and Hannah Gardner each had crucial defensive saves of their own, stopping three more potential goals!

“The pregame message was simple: play fast—and that is exactly how we started. From the opening whistle, we established an up-tempo pace, moving the ball quickly and creating opportunities with an aggressive, attacking style of play.
“As fatigue began to set in late in the second quarter, we regrouped at halftime, made some strategic adjustments, and focused on keeping our players fresh through smart and consistent substitutions. The second half showcased a team that responded with purpose, scoring through excellent game play as well as well-executed penalty corners—something every coach loves to see.
“Our passing offense was outstanding, with the ball moving seamlessly through the field, while our defense continually stepped up to make key plays and disrupt the opposition. All in all, it was a terrific team performance marked by speed, unselfish passing, strategic adjustments, and a defense that answered the call when it mattered most.
