MEN’S BASKETBALL
Kutztown sophomore Josh Johnson (Norristown) was named the PSAC East’s Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 18. The Norristown grad led the Golden Bears to a 2-0 week and within a game of first place in the PSAC East. He averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in just 24 minutes per game. He shot 75 percent (15-for-20) from the field and ranks third in the PSAC this season at 61.1 percent. In KU’s road win at Bloomsburg, Johnson was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field and scored 21 points for the second time in three games. What made his game even more impressive was that he posted the strong offensive game despite playing just 15 minutes. In a win over Shippensburg, he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He was 6-for-11 from the field, highlighted by an and-1 putback dunk. He also had two blocks. This season, Johnson has started in all 19 games for KU. He is averaging a career-high 13.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Defensively, he has also tallied 18 blocks and has already matched his number of steals from his entire freshman year at 21. Johnson has scored 613 points through his first two years with the Golden Bears. He recently went over the 300-rebound mark as well with 316 in 46 career games and 43 starts.
Senior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 11 points in DeSales University’s 63-55 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday. Freshman Steven Ciotti (Pennsbury) connected on a three-pointer during a 10-3 DeSales run.
Junior forward Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards in Washington College’s 83-67 loss to Gettysburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 88-73 loss to 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins, Knox had 19 points, which included a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.
Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in Temple’s 73-48 win over USF on Thursday.
Wes Brooks (North Penn) scored a team-high 12 points in McDaniel’s 58-50 loss to Ursinus on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 59-50 win over Gettysburg, Brooks led the Green Terror with 14 points.
Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) nailed a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to erase a one-point deficit and lift No. 11 Randolph-Macon to a 69-66 win over sixth-ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday in front of a sellout crowd and a regional television audience. Badger finished with 14 points and dished out five assists in the Yellow Jackets’ 11th straight win.
JuniorRyan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored a team-high 16 points in No. 4 Villanova’s 78-58 loss to Georgetown last Monday.
Freshman Matthew Alden (William Tennent) scored a career-high 13 points in Ursinus College’s 74-61 loss to Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
Sophomore Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) scored a game-high 15 points in Gwynedd Mercy’s 89-55 win over Baptist Bible on Saturday. In Thursday’s 85-70 win over Cabrini, Goodman had 12 points while Julian Hyden (Bensalem) added 11.
Senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 12 points in East Stroudsburg’s 75-72 win over Kutztown on Sunday afternoon. In Wednesday’s 101-90 win over Mansfield, Grant had 14 points.
Junior forward Ryan O’Neil (Central Bucks East) contributed five points in Moravian’s 70-61 come-from-behind win over Juniata on Saturday. In Moravian’s 78-76 overtime win over Penn State-Lehigh Valley, O’Neil pulled down a game and career-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points and three assists.
Anthony Moe (Souderton) recorded his first double-double as a Marauder with 16 points and 11 rebounds in Millersville’s 99-76 win over Wilmington on Wednesday. He also had three blocked shots.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) netted her 1,000th career point in last Gwynedd Mercy’s 77-71 loss to Immaculata last Monday. The Norristown grad finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Matthews entered the game needing 14 points to hit the milestone. She reached the 1,000-point plateau on a free throw at the 2:29 mark of the second half. In Saturday’s 88-66 win over Rosemont, Matthews had a team-high six rebounds.
Junior Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) scored a game-high 17 points and also had a career-high four steals in St. Joseph’s 66-48 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 63-54 loss to Duquesne, Andrews had a game-high 17 points.
Senior center Emily Leer (Abington) scored a team-high 15 points in Villanova’s 59-56 loss to No. 25 Seton Hall on Friday.
Junior forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) scored a game-high 14 points in Washington College’s 59-39 loss to Gettysburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 67-51 loss to Johns Hopkins, Kendall posted her second double-double of the year with 12 points and tied for a game-best 10 rebounds to go along with a game and career-high five steals.
Senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored 10 points and handed out a game-high six assists in Chestnut Hill’s 81-49 win over Concordia College (N.Y.) on Saturday.
Junior Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) notched her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds (nine offensive) in Shippensburg’s 65-59 win over Cheyney on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 70-58 win over Lock Haven, Knauer tallied 11 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) recorded a game-high 20 points and also added five rebounds, one steal and one assist in Widener’s 63-53 loss to Stevenson on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 73-64 loss to Arcadia, Gallagher recorded a team-high 14 points and also added five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.
Sophomore center Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) contributed 15 points and nine rebounds in Alvernia’s 75-69 loss to Lycoming on Saturday. On Wednesday, Roberts scored 14 points in Alvernia’s 70-68 loss to Albright.
Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) scored 12 points in Albright’s 70-68 win over Alvernia on Wednesday.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in Delaware Valley’s 75-67 loss to FDU-Florham on Wednesday.
Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) scored a team-high 17 points in Cairn University’s 44-35 loss to Bryn Mawr on Monday.
Junior guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) had 13 points, five rebounds, eight steals and three blocks in East Stroudsburg’s 80-73 double overtime win over Kutztown on Sunday afternoon. Her eighth steal and two free throws forced overtime. Rachel Falkowski (Central Bucks South) scored eight points.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Junior Zach Brech (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay that posted a time of 3:07.33 in Towson’s 177.5-103.5 win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded a season-best performance in winning the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:10.79 in Albright’s 146.5-88.5 loss to Susquehanna in the regular season finale on Saturday. He also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:05.33) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.32). Teammate Tim Resch (Springfield) captured first in the 100 IM (2:20.37), fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.06) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.87).
Andrew Richey (William Tennent) earned a PSAC qualifying time in IUP’s 120-116 win over Clarion on Friday.
Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) won a pair of individual events in 19th-ranked Gettysburg’s 151-108 win over Mary Washington on Saturday. The Upper Dublin grad won the 200 freestyle (1:45.99) and 100 freestyle (47.40). He also was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:26.15). With the win, Gettysburg (6-0) ran its dual-meet winning streak to 18.
Ben Mancini (Springfield) posted victories in the 400 freestyle (4:39.24) and 800 free (9:41.84) in Washington & Jefferson’s 111-88 win over Hiram on Saturday.
Sophomore Spencer Collopy (North Penn) was part of the second place 200 yard medley relay (1:45.07) in Ursinus College’s 113-84 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday. Sophomore Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) finished second in the 1000 free (11:08.62) and third in the 100 free (51.42).
Senior RJ Phiambolis (Pennridge) won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.59 in Shippensburg’s 129-68 win over Davis & Elkins on Saturday.
Bob Bantley (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:22.19 in Penn State’s 173-127 win over Navy on Saturday.
In the diving portion of Saturday’s dual, Penn State senior T.J. Schenkel (Council Rock South) earned a career best 322.19 score in the 1-meter and finished first. He then made it two-for-two on the boards as he took home the gold in the 3-meter with a season best score of 349.80.
Pat Stasio (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the winning 400 medley relay team that posted a time of 3:33.74 in Bloomsburg’s 114-78 win over Susquehanna on Friday night.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Liz Muller (Central Bucks West) finished second in both the 1000 free (11:25.86) and 200 breaststroke (2:41.77) in Albright’s 169-87 loss to Susquehanna on Saturday. She also was part of the second place 400 free relay (4:00.96).
Kristina Congdon (Pennsbury) finished first in the 1-meter diving event (277.95) in Delaware’s 174-126 loss to the University of Penn on Saturday. She also captured fourth place in the 3-meter event.
Abby Miller (Neshaminy) was part of Lock Haven’s winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:47.50 at the Vulcan Dual Meet Challenge hosted by California (Pa.) University on Saturday. She also was part of the third place 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:47.50.
Tommie Dillione (Council Rock North) finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.24 in No. 17 Penn State’s 174-115 win over Navy on Saturday.
Junior Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) was a double-event winner in Shippensburg’s 108-60 win over Davis & Elkins on Saturday. She posted the top times in the 200 (1:58.83) and 500 (5:28.99). She also was part of the winning 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:56.70. Devon Perugini (Neshaminy) also was part of the winning 400 free relay as well as the first place 400 medley relay (4:23.34).
Sophomore Jess Wimmer (Souderton) captured first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:41.49 in Lycoming’s 135-126 loss to King’s College on Saturday.
Freshman Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) finished third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 253.88 in Marist’s 159-141 win over Seton Hall on Saturday.
Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.02 in No. 24 Franklin & Marshall’s 118.5-86.5 loss to Ursinus on Saturday.
Senior Ellie Houser (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:44.53 in Gettysburg’s 134-128 loss to Mary Washington on Saturday.
Eve Kosten (North Penn) was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:27.56) in the University of Buffalo’s 181-117 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
Sophomore Emily Houser (Upper Dublin) anchored the winning medley relay and also captured first in the 200 backstroke and finished second in the 50 free in Dickinson’s 138-64 win over Washington College on Saturday.
Senior Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) finished third in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.18 and second in the 500 free (5:22.05) in Ursinus College’s 118.5-86.5 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 400 free (3:42.24).
Senior Kate Dillione (Council Rock North) captured the title in the 200 free (1:50.90) and was part of the winning 400 free relay in Brown’s 215-85 loss to Columbia on Saturday.
Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.74 in Bloomsburg’s 151-103 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:50.24. In Friday’s 120-82 win over Susquehanna, Wheatley was part of the 400 medley relay that won with a time of 3:59.32. She also captured first place in the 100 backstroke (59.89).
Bridget Perdoch (Pennsbury) finished first in the 200 breast with an existing PSAC mark of 2:36.53 in Kutztown’s 138-122 win over Millersville on Saturday. She also finished second in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:11.75. Perdoch was part of the third place 400 free relay (4:06.18). Aimee Watkins (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 11:55.58 and was fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:54.75. Caitlyn Falguera (Hatboro-Horsham) was third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 2:25.95 and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.02). Both Watkins and Falguera were part of the fifth place 400 free relay (4:19.29.
Shirley Samson (Council Rock North) finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:45.14) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:11.19) in East Stroudsburg’s 151-103 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. Rebecca Samson (Council Rock North) took fifth place in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.79) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:28.52).
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Pitt freshman Chris Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished third in the long jump with a distance of 6.93 meters at the YSU Invitational at Youngstown State this weekend. He also advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash and placed seventh in the event with a time of 7.09.
Ursinus College’s Jequan Mitchell (Upper Merion) won his heat in the 60 dash with a personal best time of 7.3 at the Collegeville Classic on Friday night.
Shippensburg jnior Jalen Ramsey (Norristown) claimed gold in the high jump, clearing 6 ¾ inches with the fewest misses at the Golden Invitational hosted by Bucknell University Saturday. Freshman Alex Balla (Quakertown) posted a time of 8:57.70 in the 3K to capture third and rank fifth in the PSAC. Senior Dan Dreeman (Council Rock South) posted a time of 1:56.92 in the 800 meters and was part of the 4×800 relay that finished second with a time of 7:58.68.
Widener junior Jason Caporale (Neshaminy) finished fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:30.98 at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus College on Friday night. He also recorded a time of 2:06.59 in the 800-meter dash.
West Chester’s Shawn Young (Central Bucks West) was runner-up in the 400m dash, clocking a time of 50.08, while Chris Stancil (Bensalem) finished eighth with a time of 51.59 at the Tiger Open in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Messiah’s Tiffany Burrows (Quakertown) posted a PR in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.86 at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus College on Friday.
Ursinus College’s Chloe Johnson-Hyde (North Penn) posted personal bests in the 60 dash (8.34) and the 200 dash (27.8) at the Collegeville Classic on Friday night.
Moravian sophomore Sarah Hughes (Souderton) placed 14th in the mile with a time of 5:38.71 at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus College on Friday night.
Widener’s Amber Char (William Tennent) recorded a fifth place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.05 meters (10’00”) at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus College on Friday night.
West Chester freshman Emily Magnant (Hatboro-Horsham) qualified for the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships to highlight the Golden Rams at the Tiger Open in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday. The Hatboro alum leaped 34 feet, 11 inches to hit her qualifying standard. Emily Dusellier (Souderton) finished third in the 800m in 2:19.84 and helped the 4×400 relay team place third with a time of 4:00.33. Dusellier ran the lead leg, followed by Moira Fox (Central Bucks West) and Dara Lindsay (Central Bucks East). Danielle Kuhn (Central Bucks East) was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 17-10 3/4.
Bloomsburg’s Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) finished third in the mile run with a PSAC qualifying time of 5:08.30 at the Gulden Invitational on the campus of Bucknell on Saturday. Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) also met the conference standard in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:48.15. Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) posted a season-best time of 19:18.32 in the 5000 meters.
WRESTLING
Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) was aggressive from start to finish, recording an impressive seven takedowns to help compile a 16-4 major decision victory at 157 points in 13th-ranked Kutztown’s 39-10 win over American International on Saturday afternoon.
