BASEBALL
Georgetown senior left-handed pitcher Matt Hollenbeck (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The preseason team was selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches. Hollenbeck had a strong campaign for the Hoyas in 2014, both as a starter and out of the bullpen. The southpaw made 18 appearances on the mound, compiling a 5-2 record with a 3.18 ERA. He led the pitching staff in ERA, tied for the team lead in wins and finished second with 50 strikeouts. Hollenbeck finished the season strong in his last two starts, pitching seven innings and recording career-high eight strikeouts in wins over Villanova and Butler. Over the summer, Hollenbeck played in the Cape Cod League, pitching for the Falmouth Commodores. He registered a 1-0 record with a 1.35 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13.1 innings in nine regular-season appearances. In the postseason, he started in the deciding third game of the second round, giving up just two hits and two runs in four innings as Falmouth won to advance to the championship round. The Hoyas open the 2015 season the weekend of Feb. 13-15 at the Wake Forest Invitational where they will play VCU, Bucknell and Delaware.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) posted an impressive double-double to lead Temple to an 84-76 win over UCF on Sunday, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Owls remain undefeated on their home court with a record of 7-0, and Sunday’s win was the Owls’ fifth straight. In Wednesday’s 57-53 win over defending national champion UConn, Bond had seven points and six rebounds. Last Sunday, Bond pulled down a career-high 18 boards to go along with 12 points in Temple’s 66-56 win over Delaware State. He had 11 rebounds in the first half alone while also leading Temple with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting. His 18 rebounds tied the building record for rebounds in a single game at the Liacouras Center. Bond hit 6-of-10 shots from the field.
Junior Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored a team-high 15 points in Villanova’s 67-55 win over Butler on Wednesday.
Junior forward Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) scored 24 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in Washington College’s 73-63 loss to DePauw on Tuesday. Teammate Sean Brooks (North Penn) had four assists. In Tuesday’s 69-52 loss to Hobart, Knox contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.
Senior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in DeSales University’s 72-69 win over Elizabethtown in double overtime. Freshman Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) also had a big day, contributing 17 points and nine rebounds.
Wes Brooks (North Penn) had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals in McDaniel’s 66-52 win over New Jersey City on Saturday. Teammate Jack Rauchut (William Tennent) contributed five points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Freshman guard Matthew Alden (William Tennent) had four points and six rebounds in Ursinus College’s 65-58 loss to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday in the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. In last Sunday’s 59-53 win over Rensselaer in the Land of Magic Classic, Alden had four points and four rebounds.
Junior forward Ryan O’Neil (Central Bucks East) contributed four points, four rebounds and one block in Moravian College’s 79-57 loss to Susquehanna on Saturday.
Josh Johnson (Norristown) had 12 points and six rebounds in Kutztown’s 73-71 win over Edinboro on Saturday. With the win, the Golden Bears (9-5, 6-2 PSAC) moved back into first place in the PSAC East for the second time this season. In Wednesday’s 73-60 loss to the University of the Sciences, Johnson had seven points and five rebounds.
Senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 11 points in East Stroudsburg’s 73-63 loss to No. 20 IUP on Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior forward Emily Leer (Abington) scored 25 points in Villanova’s 79-76 win over No. 25/24 DePaul in overtime on Friday. Leer’s layup with three seconds in regulation forced overtime. The Abington grad is 27-of-48 (.562) from the field in the five games she has played this year. In Tuesday’s 74-65 win over North Carolina State, Leer had 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and a 4-of-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) had 12 points and four rebounds in St. Joe’s 69-67 loss to Qunnipiac last Sunday in the semifinals of the 22nd Hawk Classic.
Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) had nine points and seven rebounds in Albright’s 57-55 loss to Stevenson on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 86-64 win over Neumann, O’Donnell scored 11 points.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) recorded a career-high 22 points in Widener’s 71-61 win over Apprentice School at the Juniata Holiday Tournament on Tuesday. The Souderton grad shot 9-of-18 from the field with six rebounds. She connected on 3-of-7 from long distance. In Saturday’s 68-46 win over Lycoming, Gallagher had 11 points and five rebounds.
Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Alvernia’s 75-58 loss to Messiah on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 71-60 loss to Emory & Henry, Roberts led the Crusaders with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Freshman Kaitlin Kelly (Pennsbury) scored 14 points off the bench, 11 during a game-clinching run, in DeSales University’s 62-51 win over Ursinus on Saturday.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) had 10 rebounds in Delaware Valley’s 57-47 loss at Lycoming in the opening round of the Hoops for Hounds Classic last Sunday.
Senior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored six points in Gwynedd Mercy’s 54-43 win over Bridgewater
State on Saturday.
Senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) contributed 13 points, one rebound, one assist and one steal in Chestnut Hill’s 77-54 win over Caldwell College on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 85-65 loss to the University of Bridgeport, Felder broke out for a season-high 20 points, scoring nearly a third of the Griffins’ points on an 8-of-16 shooting effort that also included a rebound, two assists and a block.
FIELD HOCKEY
Messiah College senior Becky Ely (Council Rock North) is one of three women’s finalists for the 2014-15 Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Nominees are collected from head coaches across each of the fall, winter and spring seasons. Nominees were mandated to have earned at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA while proving to be outstanding performers in their sport. Ely, the fall nominee, carries a 3.77 GPA as a mathematics major with a teaching certification. She was recently named the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey and is a two-time All-Region and three-time All-Commonwealth performer. At the conclusion of the spring season, the male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be selected.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Messiah College senior Madi Brunk (Cheltenham) is one of three women’s finalists for the 2014-15 Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Nominees are collected from head coaches across each of the fall, winter and spring seasons. Nominees were mandated to have earned at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA while proving to be outstanding performers in their sport. Brunk, the spring nominee, carries a 3.86 GPA as an engineering major. Last season she led the team in assists (40) and fell just short of breaking the single-season assists record (42). She was second on the team in total points with 67. Brunk is also a National Merit Finalist. At the conclusion of the spring season, the male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be selected.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:38.29 – just .31 seconds off the Natatorium record – in Albright’s 149-112 Middle Atlantic Conference win over visiting Hood College on Saturday. Sutton finished second in both the 1000 freestyle (10:58.51) and 500 freestyle (5:02.15). He also was part of the second place 400 freestyle relay that posted a time of 3:22.62. Teammate Tim Resch (Springfield) finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.57.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Towson junior Natalee Szopo (Upper Moreland) posted a score of 215.00 and finished in 35th place in the three-meter dive at the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Saturday.
Ursinus senior Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) continued his great start, winning the 157 pound bracket at the 2014 Citrus Open in Florida. He started the day with a pin of Jake Allen of Cornell College in 2:44, then defeated Jake Vincent of John Carroll 8-2. In the semifinals, he beat Tom McNulty of John Carroll (3-2), and in the championship, he bested top-seed Jon Garrison of Mount Union (4-1).
WRESTLING
Bucknell senior Joe Stolfi (Souderton) competed at the First Citizens Community Bank Lock Haven Invitational, posting a 3-0 mark on his way to a title at 285. The Souderton grad now has 10 wins by fall this year and ranks fourth in program history with 42 in his career. Bucknell is ranked 25th nationally.
Kutztown’s Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) posted a pair of wins at 157 at the F&M Open on Saturday, winning the two matches by a combined 38-7 score. Teammate Brandon Parker (Norristown) was 1-1, pinning F&M’s Andy Francos in 0:51 but falling to Brown’s Richard Muniz by an 8-7 decision.
