MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington’s Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) was selected as the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12. Kane put up yet another top performance despite rainy and wet conditions at Lancaster Bible College Charger Invitational, finishing the event in a new course-record time of 26:59 to take first place out of 45 runners. It was the third straight year that Kane was the top finisher on the eight-kilometer course, which helped Abington also win the seven-team event for the third consecutive time.
Kane led the Nittany Lions and finished ninth overall out of 355 runners with a time of 26:12.0 at the Gettysburg College Invitational on Saturday. Senior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) crossed the line in 141st place with a time of 28:50.3 while Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) crossed the line with a 29:14.6. The Nittany Lions finished 21st out of 34 teams.
University of Penn senior John Trueman (Springfield) finished 35th overall with a time of 24:57 at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. Freshman Ross Wilson (Council Rock North) finished 58th with a time of 25.12. Penn placed third as a team.
Messiah College’s Natalie Ross (Souderton) and Leah Novak (Souderton) finished 56th and 92nd respectively at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday. Messiah finished eighth among 35 teams.
Penn State’s Connor Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) crossed the finish line with a time of 26:42.0 at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
La Salle’s Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) posted a time of 26:56.2 and teammate Francis Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) crossed the finish line with a time of 26:57.8 at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
Ursinus junior David Slade (Abington) posted a time of 29:58.6 at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Ben Keliojor (Norristown) posted a time of 38:06 at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) was the second Nittany Lion to complete the 6,000-meter course at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday. In a deep field with some of the nation’s best female cross country runners, Gerlach crossed the finish line with a time of 21:33.2. As a team, the Nittany Lions finished 10th.
Elizabethtown teammates Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South) and Kelsey Brady (Council Rock South) finished one second part at the 2014 Princeton Invitational with Underkofler finishing 132nd (25:30) while Brady was 136th (25:31).
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Brittany Finn (Upper Moreland) finished 112th with a time of 25:49, an average mile of 6:53, which was 14 seconds faster per mile than her fastest 6K this year, at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Hannah Geiger (Council Rock South) finished 139th with a time of 26:15. The Griffen women finished 15th out of 35 teams.
FIELD HOCKEY
Saint Joseph’s freshman midfielder Melissa Herd (Pennridge) was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12. It is the second such honor for Herd, who also received the league honor on Sept. 2. Herd scored her second goal of the season as the Hawks battled perennial A-10 power Massachusetts. Her blast from the top of the circle leveled the game at one. The Minutewomen would go on to win 3-2 over the Hawks. Herd is one of four Hawks to start all 14 games this season and the only freshman on the squad to do so. She has tallied two goals and one assist for five points in her rookie campaign.
Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) scored an overtime goal to propel No. 7 Stanford to a 2-1 win over No. 14 Michigan last Sunday. The win extended Stanford’s winning streak to eight.
Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal with an assist from Emily Vasey (Central Bucks East) in La Salle’s 4-3 win at Missouri State on Sunday. The goal was Kempf’s third of the weekend. In Friday’s 3-2 overtime win at Saint Louis, Kempf scored a pair of goals – including the game winner. Kempf scored both goals after picking up a saved shot on the defensive end and carrying it up the right side of the field for a breakaway.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) scored a goal in West Chester’s 5-1 win over IUP Saturday.
Junior Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals to lead Villanova to a 2-1 overtime win over Georgetown on Friday. It was Kenney’s goal nine minutes into overtime that propelled the Wildcats to the first BIG EAST win of the year. In last Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Saint Francis, Kenney and Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) each contributed an assist.
Kara Imes (North Penn) scored her first collegiate goal in Delaware Valley’s 8-1 loss to Cabrini on Tuesday.
Sophomore Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in Lehigh’s 4-2 loss at Brown last Sunday.
Sophomore goalie Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) collected a career high 12 saves, including a diving save of a shot on a breakaway, in The College of New Jersey’s 4-1 win over Ursinus in a battle of the fourth and fifth ranked teams. The fifth-ranked Bears saw their eight-game winning streak snapped. In Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Kean, Schlupp recorded four saves.
Brittany Wilson (Upper Moreland) and Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) both contributed a goal and assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 7-0 win over Keystone on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 12-1 win over Cedar Crest, Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) scored a pair of goals while O’Neill and Madison Reiss (Pennridge) each had one goal.
Dana Adamson (Central Bucks South) connected on his first collegiate goal in Widener’s 4-1 loss to #14 Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 4-0 win over Lehigh University on Sunday. Rebekah Hershey (Souderton) was part of the Lady Eagles’ shutdown defense.
FOOTBALL
Junior wide receiver Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) caught three passes for 66 yards – 47 of which came on a flea flicker on the first play from scrimmage in Shippensburg’ 55-28 loss to West Chester on Saturday. Mayer whose brother Shannon played against him in the game for West Chester, moved into seventh all-time in SU’s career reception list with 139.
Safety Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) had a game-high 13 tackles in Kutztown’s 31-12 loss to 12th-ranked Bloomsburg on Saturday. Freshman Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem) connected on field goals of 28 and 32 yards.
DJ McFadden (Abington) flashed his big-play ability, beating one-on-one coverage on a slant route and hauling in a pass on near the 15-yard line, racing in for his first career touchdown – a 42-yard strike – in Bloomsburg’s 31-13 win over Kutztown. Later in the game, he caught a 10-yard touchdown pass. He finished with four receptions for 76 yards.
Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) had eight tackles to lead the defense in West Chester’s 55-28 win over Shippensburg. Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) had three receptions for 48 yards, which included a 21-yard touchdown catch.
Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) connected on a 46-yard field goal in Millersville’s 35-13 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday. On defense Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) totaled 10 tackles, giving him double-digit tackles in six of seven games.
MEN’S GOLF
Millersville junior Rodney Anders (Souderton) shot a 78 and tied for 29th at the 2014 PSAC Championships on Sunday. The Marauders finished in third place in the team standings. In Saturday’s opening round, Anders shot an 80.
Penn State Abington junior Mike Lam (Neshaminy) led all Nittany Lion scorers, shooting a 76 (+4) at the Chestnut Hill Fall Invitational on Tuesday at Indian Valley Country Club. He finished tied for third overall among 61 players. Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) finished tied for 30th carding an 86 (+14), and Billy Bracy (North Penn) shot a 93 (+21). In Friday’s Rutgers-Camden Invitational, Lam led all Nittany Lion scorers, shooting a 78 (+8). He finished tied for 12th overall among 88 players. Chris Pickwell (Council Rock South) paced the ‘B’ team, finishing tied for 27th overall, shooting an 83 (+14). Ailtmar finished tied for 31st overall, shooting an 84 (+14) on the 6,250 yard par 70 course.
Temple senior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) tied for ninth place at the 2014 Temple Invitational, shooting 147 (70-77). Temple won the invitational.
La Salle senior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) shot an 84 (+12) and was tied for 52nd after the first day of the Lehigh Valley Invitational on Saturday. In last weekend’s Temple Invitational, Goodreds led the Explorers with a 75 (+5) on Sunday. He finished tied for 39th with his 79-75=154 (+14). La Salle placed 11th as a team.
West Chester senior Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) scored a 148 over the 36-hole 2014
PSAC Championship to finish one stroke off the lead. Slawter shot a one-under 71 on Sunday on the heels of shooting a 77 on Saturday. Gannon’s Matt Barto parred the first playoff hole to take home the PSAC individual championship. Millersville’s Robby Rowe was runner-up after tying Barto for first place following 36 holes. West Chester captured the team title, its first PSAC title since 2006 and fourth overall. Last weekend, Slawter tied for sixth at the Howard “Bud” Elwell Tournament. West Chester was the runner-up in the team standings.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Middlebury senior Jordan Glatt (Central Bucks East) finished in a tie for 16th at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational hosted by Wellesley College after shooting an 85 and 81 over the two-day event last weekend.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cabrini sophomore Ryan New (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12. The Hatboro alum scored his team’s only goal in Cabrini’s 1-0 double-overtime win at Immaculata. New has been an integral part of Cabrini’s stingy defense. Through 14 matches, all of which New has started, the Cavaliers have surrendered just 0.93 goals.
Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) stopped a season-best six shots, including two in the first overtime period, in Drexel’s 2-1 win in double overtime over James Madison on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Ben Marks (Central Bucks East) sent a free kick from outside the box across the goal mouth that – after getting knocked around – found the foot of teammate Alec Golini, whose flick feed led to Eric West’s game winner in Lafayette’s 1-0 win over Buffalo on Tuesday night.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Nesteruk (Central Bucks East) was credited with five saves in The College of New Jersey’s 3-0 loss on the road to Rutgers University-Camden on Thursday night.
Junior Steve Pereira (William Tennent) contributed an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-1 overtime win over Baptist Bible on Thursday.
Chris Kulczytzky (Council Rock North) connected for a goal in Philadelphia University’s 3-2 win over Georgian Court on Tuesday.
Austin Transue (Neshaminy) delivered a cross to set up the game-winning goal in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win over Slippery Rock on Friday.
Senior Christian Benner (Souderton) scored from 10 yards out for his first goal of the season to knot the score 1-1 in West Chester’s 2-1 win over Shippensburg on Tuesday night.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Andrea Caya (Pennridge) drove a header into the back off the net on a corner kick in 22nd-ranked Dickinson’s 4-0 win over Washington College on Saturday. She also contributed an assist. Caya raised her point total to 11 for the season and next week will be squared off against former teammate Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) next Saturday when Dickinson will face Ursinus. The two players are tied in points in the Continental Conference.
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) scored three goals and matched a school record with three assists in Cedarville’s 12-0 win over Salem International on Tuesday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) scored her ninth goal of the season in Elizabethtown’s 3-0 win over Juniata on Saturday.
Kayla Nolan (Abington) scored her conference leading 17th goal of the year just 15 minutes into Penn State Abington’s 2-1 overtime victory over Penn College on Sunday. Megan Murphy (William Tennent) fed Nolan the ball. In the 97th minute, Murphy scored the golden goal. In Wednesday night’s 9-0 win over the College of St. Elizabeth, Cindy Wade (Abington) scored her first goals of the season in the 23rd and 26th minutes. Murphy picked up the shutout victory in the net. Ashlee Kohn (Bensalem) also scored a goal. In last Sunday’s 5-0 win over Wells College, Jennifer Cifuentes (Bensalem) and Nolan each scored goals while Mallory Mugnier (Abington) contributed an assist.
Freshman Megan Shafer (Neshaminy) scored the only goal in No. 11 Penn State’s 1-0 win over No. 24 Michigan on Thursday. The Neshaminy grad received the ball in the box and fired a shot from 14 yards out of the nearside post for the game-winning goal. The win gives Penn State (13-2, 8-1 Big Ten) sole possession of first place in the Big Ten standings.
Senior Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Holy Family’s 3-1 win over Chestnut Hill on Friday.
Carly Yost (North Penn) scored the second goal of the game and her sixth of the season in 11th-ranked West Chester’s 2-0 win over Millersville on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Shippensburg, Yost scored the game winner in the 88th minute.
Sophomore Megan Gerhart (North Penn) recorded seven saves in Virginia Wesleyan’s 3-0 loss to Bridgewater on Saturday.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Ian Flynn (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:10.35 in Rider’s 160-138 loss to Seton Hall on Thursday.
IUP’s Andrew Richey (William Tennent) won the 100 freestyle at the season-opening SPIRE Open on Saturday.
Eric Jensen (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:25.41 in Buffalo’s scrimmage against Cornell.
Shannon Senour (Central Bucks South) contributed an assist on the game winner in Temple’s 1-0 win over Houston last Sunday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Junior Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.15 for a three-second victory in Shippensburg’s tri-meet with West Chester and Southern Connecticut on Saturday. Meier also was part of the 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:41.92. She finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.29.
Kutztown’s Aimee Watkins (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the 1000 freestyle at Kutztown’s 113-76 dual meet win over Mansfield on Saturday, posting a time of 12:06.26. Teammate Bridget Perdock (Pennsbury) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06.87. Caitlyn Falguera (Hatboro-Horsham) was fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.55.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Jenna Cafferollo (North Penn) earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at fifth singles while teammate Corina Davis (North Penn) notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles in Gwynedd Mercy’s 8-1 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday. Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-1 win, and Caffarello
and Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) teamed up at third singles to earn an 8-4 win. In Gwynedd Mercy’s 6-3 win over Cabrini Friday, Kriebel earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at fourth singles while Caffarello earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles. Michener was part of the second doubles team that won 9-7 while Caffarello and Kriebel teamed up at third doubles for an 8-6 win. In Tuesday’s 6-1 win over Immaculata, Michener earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles and Caffarello earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at sixth singles. Michener’s second doubles team won 8-1.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Holy Family University freshman outside hitter Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) was listed on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 12. Ingram helped lead the Tigers to a 2-0 week with victories at Chestnut Hill and Felician College. With the two wins, Holy Family improved to 9-10 overall and 7-2 in CACC action. For the week, Ingram averaged a team high 4.57 kills per set after recording an attack percentage of .278. She also averaged 2.71 digs per set on the defensive side of the ball. Against Chestnut Hill, Ingram totaled a weekly high of 17 kills and 16 digs and followed that with a 15 kill performance versus Felician. In her first year of collegiate action, Ingram is currently averaging 2.55 kills and 2.94 digs per set to go along with 30 service aces.
Senior Devin Ingram (Upper Merion) recorded 18 assists and also had a team-high 10 digs in Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Caldwell College on Saturday. Freshman Melanie Ingram had four kills. In Friday’s 3-0 win over the University of the Sciences, Devyn Ingram had 26 set assists to go along with 10 digs and a solo block. Melanie Ingram tallied seven kills and 13 digs. In Tuesday’ 3-0 loss to West Chester, Melanie Ingram had 12 kills and 10 digs while Devyn Ingram had 34 assists and 11 digs.
Junior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had 13 kills in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Wilkes on Saturday. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over William Patterson in the second match of Saturday’s tri-match, Koenig had 24 assists and nine digs. In Friday’s 3-0 win at Marywood, Koenig recorded 19 assists to go with eight digs. In Wednesday’s 3-0 wins over both Keystone College and Cedar Crest, Koenig had 22 assists and eight digs in the win over Keystone and had 24 assists, nine digs and four service aces in the sweep of Cedar Crest.
Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had 41 digs in UMBC’s 3-2 win over Albany on Friday.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) notched 13 kills and a .579 hitting percentage in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 win over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) was credited with 23 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 loss to SUNYIT on Saturday. In the Nittany Lions 3-1 loss to Morrisville, Nelson had 39 assists. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Wells College, Nelson had 18 assists and seven digs.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had nine kills in Ursinus College’s 3-0 loss to Swarthmore on Tuesday.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had 12 kills in Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to West Chester on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-0 win over Cheyney, Stringer led the way with 11 kills and a .588 attack percentage.
