MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Cairn University freshman Joel Varughese (Bensalem) finished sixth with a time of 14:41.3 at the Immaculata Invitational on Thursday. Cairn finished first as a team.
La Salle senior Francis Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) was named Atlantic 10 Co-Performer of the Week after his performance at the Princeton Invitational. The senior finished third in a field of 225 runners at the Princeton Invitational, completing the 8K course in 24:22.4 to help the Explorers place fifth of 23 teams.
Widener sophomore Sean Stovall (Springfield) navigated the four-mile course at the Haverford Invitational in 22:55.1 to finish 31st among 56 runners on Friday. Junior Nick Pettit (Central Bucks South) hit the tape in 23:24.8.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Philadelphia University senior Victoria Frisbie (North Penn) finished seventh with a time of 20:28.9 at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championships on Sunday at Belmont Plateau. The Rams won their third straight CACC championships.
Sophomore Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) continued her terrific sophomore
campaign, finishing just two spots shy of an All-PSAC First Team finish, by claiming 17th place with a time of 23:25 at the PSAC Championships on Saturday. She had the exact same time as Mansfield’s Allison McCurry, who was awarded 16th place. It was an improvement of 51 places from her debut conference championship run a year ago. Sophomore Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) crossed the finish line in 20th in 23:32.2 as SU’s final scorer. The performances were the first All-PSAC honors for Gerlach and Kinkead. Freshman Maria Antoni (Upper Moreland) and sophomore Abbie Todd (Council Rock North) finished with times of 25:14.1 and 25:42.6, respectively. Shippensburg claimed its eighth PSAC title.
Kutztown sophomore Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) earned All-PSAC First Team honors after placing 11th overall in a time of 23:09.2 at the PSAC Championships on Saturday. Olivia Dettore (Central Bucks West) finished 51st with a time of 24:28.5. KU finished sixth out of 17 teams in the 6K race at North Campus.
Gwynedd Mercy’s Cara Landis (North Penn) finished 33rd with a time of 16:26.7 at the Immaculata Invitational on Thursday.
Bloomsburg senior Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) finished
sixth overall on the 6K course in 22:52 at the 2016 PSAC Championships at Kutztown University on Saturday. Finishing 14th was senior Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) in 23:18. Both earned first team All-PSAC honors.
FIELD HOCKEY
Villanova freshman forward/midfielder Emma McLaughlin
(Quakertown) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16. In the Wildcats’ 3-2 win over Temple, McLaughlin tied the game with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation. She scored the game-winning goal six minutes later to lead the Wildcats to their first conference victory of the season. McLaughlin is tied with two other teammates for the second most goals on the team with four. She is third on the team in points with 11.
McLaughlin scored the tying goal with 46 seconds remaining in regulation in Villanova’s 3-2 overtime loss to Old Dominion on Sunday. Freshman Christen Pennington (Neshaminy) was stellar on defense, delivering back-to-back interceptions.
Freshman Sam Scoma (Wissahickon) scored her fourth goal of the season to propel Widener University to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Stevenson in double overtime on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to nationally-ranked Alvernia, senior Alyssa Buckley (Springfield) scored her team’s only goal.
Keystone College sophomore Emily Hawkins (Cheltenham) was named the Colonial States Athletic
Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16 after leading the Giants to a 2-0 week. It is the second time this season she has received the weekly award. The sophomore goalkeeper made seven saves in a 2-1 win over Houghton before turning aside a season-high 12 shots in a 2-1 overtime win over Immaculata. Hawkins finished the week with a .905 save percentage and a 0.92 goals against average.
Hawkins recorded four saves in Keystone College’s 2-1 loss to Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. Hawkins leads all CSAC goalies in goals-against average (1.355) and save percentage (.861). In Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Cedar Crest, Hawkins made three saves to pick up the win. In Monday’s 7-2 loss to Albright, Hawkins had 10 stops.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Laskowitz (Wissahickon) assisted on a goal in Miami University’s 6-1 win over Appalachian State on Friday.
Freshman Becky Gerhart (Quakertown) added to her impressive total of defensive saves for the season, now seven, in Temple’s 3-2 win over Quiinnipiac on Friday.
Sophomore Katie Bagdon (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Drexel’s 4-3 win over Hofstra on Friday night.
Marley Berger (Springfield) scored a goal in Albright’s 7-2 win over Keystone on Monday.
Shelby Landes (Souderton) recorded five saves in No. 1 Messiah College’s 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Alvernia University on Saturday. The win was the 14th straight for the Falcons, who are 14-1 on the season and 6-0 in the MAC Commonwealth. In Wednesday’s 4-0 win over the Catholic University of America, Kristin Donohue (Council Roc South) scored her fifth goal of the season. Landes turned away the only three shots she faced to earn the win in goal.
Rachel Gorman (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Lebanon Valley’s 8-0 win over Hood on Saturday.
Amber Steigerwalt (Central Bucks South) scored a goal and handed out three assists for a five-point afternoon in No. 8 Ursinus College’s 5-1 win over Dickinson on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Washington College, Steigerwalt scored a pair of goals, including the go-ahead marker just 2:06 after halftime. Freshman Erin Saybolt (Souderton) was credited with an assist. Sophomore Jules Singer (Council Rock North) recorded four saves.
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was credited with an assist in No. 9 Kutztown University’s 2-1 loss to No. 4 Millersville on Saturday.
Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) contributed an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-1 CSAC win at Keystone on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 5-0 win at Neumann, Maggie Walsh (Central Bucks South) scored a goal.
FOOTBALL
Freshman quarterback Thomas Garlick (Quakertown) was named the recipient of the Kenneth E Walker
Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who displayed great sportsmanship and athletic ability in Saturday’s Homecoming game that saw Ursinus College defeat Susquehanna 31-24. The trophy HAS been handed out to student-athletes since the 1957 season in honor of Ursinus College Hall of Famer Ben Maliken. Garlick completed 18-of-31 pass attempts for 186 yards and a touchdown, adding an additional 101 yards and a score on the ground. Freshman Stacy Gardner (Upper Dublin) and senior Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) rushed 25 times for a combined 103 yards with Gardner adding two touchdowns on the day. Susquehanna senior CJ Virtu (Wissahickon) had four solo tackles, including one for a loss.
Mike Class (Pennridge) rushed for a career-best 90 yards on 11 carries in West Chester’s 46-12 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) connected on a 38-yard field goal in Millersville’s 43-9 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday.
Senior Alex Krivda (Pennridge) completed 7-of-12 passes for 106 yards in Widener’s 51-9 victory over Misericordia on Saturday. Senior captain Steve Gozur (North Penn) recorded a team-high seven tackles and one pass breakup.
Kutztown redshirt sophomore Craig Reynolds (Abington) was recognized as the PSAC Eastern Division
Offensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16. Reynolds ran for a school record 261 yards and three touchdowns in KU’s 49-30 win over East Stroudsburg. He averaged 13.7 yards per carry, finishing with 19 carries. He broke the previous record of Maurice Adams of 259 set in 2004 in nearly half as many carries (Adams had 35). He also broke the school record for all-purpose yards in a game at 345. The previous record was 308 set in 2007. Reynolds’ three touchdowns marked his third multi-touchdown game of the year as he has scored at least one touchdown in six of seven games this season. The redshirt sophomore has 12 rushing touchdowns this season, tied for fifth all-time in school history. Reynolds also ran a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown but had it called back for a penalty.
Reynolds became the youngest player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season in Kutztown’s 35-29 win over Lock Haven on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore ran the ball a career-high 25 times for 113 yards. His 1,018 yards rank eighth in school history, and at 127.2 per game, Reynolds is on pace to break the single-season school record of 1,393. Kenny Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) were active from their safety positions as both had nine tackles.
Matt Johns (Virginia) threw an 11-yard touchdown strike on a fake field goal in Virginia’s 35-14 loss to No. 22 North Carolina on Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Cabrini junior Clay Anders (Souderton) tied for ninth with a round of 74 at the Eastern University Fall Invitational on Wednesday. Cabrini finished second out of seven teams.
Penn State Abington senior Mike Lam (Neshaminy) shot a 71 on the par 70 course to finish third at the Eastern Invitational on Wednesday. Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) finished tied for 12th with a score of 79. The Nittany Lions finished fourth out of seven teams.
St. Joseph University junior Tyler Sokolis (Central Bucks West) finished in a tie for 58th with a score of 82-75-77/233 at the Georgetown Hoya Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Ursinus College sophomore Rebecca Chiger (Abington) was named the Centennial Conference Women’s
Golf Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16. Chiger placed third overall in a field of 35 at the Bears’ annual fall tournament, carding a combined 163 (82-81) to register the lowest two-day score in school history. The sophomore’s consistent excellence enabled the Bears to post a team total of 685, shattering the previous record for two-day score. Chiger, who finished in the top five for the second time in three events this fall, has shot an 82 or lower in three of her four rounds on the season, good for a team-leading stroke average of 82.8. The Abington grad ranked fifth in the conference in stroke average (89.00) as a freshman last season and already holds the program mark for the lowest round (80), which she established last season and shares with classmate Emily McGarrigle.
Chiger shot an 86 and tied for 11th in a field of 46 golfers at the Eastern Invitational on Wednesday. She carded a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole.
MEN’S SOCCER
Jamie Bonner (North Penn) scored his first goal of the year in the 38th minute of Penn State Abington’s 7-0 win over Wilkes University on Wednesday.
Philadelphia University junior Eric Gutierrez (Harry S Truman) was selected as a CACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16. The Truman graduate recorded the first two shutouts of his collegiate career as he made five saves in 180 minutes of action. In the win over Goldey-Beacom, Gutierrez was credited with three saves. He came back with a two-save performance in Philadelphia’s 1-0 win over Post.
Gutierrez stopped a penalty kick – one of seven first-half saves – in Philadelphia University’s 3-1 win at Bloomfield on Saturday. He finished the match with eight stops.
Johnny Ciarlante (William Tennent) scored his fourth goal of the year and Matt Robinson (North Penn) also scored a goal in La Salle’s 3-0 road win over George Mason on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Dayton, Ciarlante contributed an assist on the game-winner.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 3-2 loss to West Chester on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore midfielder Megan Engeland (Pennsbury) placed the ball in the lower corner of the net for a 1-0 lead in Washington and Lee’s 2-2 tie with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
McDaniel junior Sarah McDonald (Pennsbury) was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 16. It is the third straight week she earned the honor. McDonald led the Green Terror to a 2-0 week. She posted two more shutouts on the week, posting a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at Franklin & Marshall. Two days later, she made 10 saves to blank 22nd-ranked Swarthmore. For the season, McDonald is 11-1 with eight individual shutouts. She has posted a 0.26 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.
McDonald recorded seven saves in McDaniel’s 1-1 tie at Haverford on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win against Gettysburg, McDonald made two saves for her program record 10th shutout of the season.
Sophomore Grace Bendon (Central Bucks West) made two saves in Saint Joseph’s 4-0 win over Davidson on Sunday. In Thursday’s 2-1 win over Saint Louis in a battle of A-10 leaders, Lindsay Walder (Upper Moreland) scored a goal to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Bendon picked up the win.
Senior Jennie Jasinksi (Pennridge) scored a goal and senior Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 3-2 loss to Dickinson on Saturday. The goal was the third of the season for Jasinski, who has 22 in her career. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Washington College, Farrell scored a goal and also contributed an assist.
Sophomore forward Linzi Wolfe (Quakertown) provided a goal and assist to lift No. 3 West Chester past Lock Haven 2-0 on Wednesday. Senior Haley Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored the game’s first goal, using a Wolfe assist. Nikki Caffey (Council Rock South) assisted on Wolfe’s goal.
Marykate Bateman (Hatboro-Horsham) scored her second goal of the season and also had an assist in La Salle’s 4-3 loss at Richmond on Thursday.
Taylor Mysza (Central Bucks East) scored a pair of goals in Philadelphia University’s 5-0 win over Bloomfield on Saturday.
Amanda Mcelhare (Harry S Truman) scored a goal in Millersville’s 5-1 loss to Wilmington on Thursday.
Katie Miller (North Penn) connected on her second headed goal of the season in No. 22 Kutztown University’s 2-1 come-from-behind win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Kailey Hopkins (William Tennent) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference honor roll. She was honored after helping guide the Griffins to a 2-0 week. In a 2-1 win over Notre Dame of Maryland, Hopkins notched five saves, and she recorded her third shutout of the year in the Griffins’ 1-0 victory at Keystone.
Hopkins recorded seven stops in Gwynedd Mercy’s 1-0 double overtime loss at Rosemont on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Immaculata, Hopkins recorded six saves.
Redshirt senior Maureen Leis (Springfield Township) and sophomore Jessica Supp (Pennridge) both scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 2-0 win at IUP on Saturday. The win propelled the Huskies into the eighth spot in the PSAC standings with one game remaining. It was Bloomsburg’s third straight win. For Supp, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the year. In Wednesday’s upset 2-0 victory over No. 13 East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night, Supp scored the Huskies’ second goal nine minutes into the second half.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Gwynedd Mercy senior Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) was named to the CSAC second team in both singles and doubles. She also was chosen to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Kate Woolsey (Central Bucks East) finished with a match-high 14 kills in Delaware Valley University’s 3-0 non-conference win over Centenary University. In Thursday’s 3-0 sweep of Rosemont, Woolsey notched nine kills and seven service aces.
Chelsea Gallagher (William Tennent) recorded 11 digs in Elizabethtown’s 3-0 loss to Messiah College.
Haley Sheehan (Quakertown) had five kills in Cairn University’s 3-0 loss to Neumann University on Tuesday.
Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) had 17 kills in No. 15 Eastern University’s 3-2 win over No. 7 Emory University on Saturday at the Win Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College. In the Eagles’ sweep of Geneva College later in the day, Elechko had nine kills. It is the first match this season that Elechko had less than 10 kills. In Friday’s 3-1 loss to No. 10 Juniata, Elechko had 13 kills. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over King’s College, Elechko had 12 kills. The win locked up the top seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament for the ninth consecutive year.
Sophomore Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) recorded nine digs, four kills and three aces in Ursinus College’s 3-1 loss to Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday. In the Bears 3-1 loss to Dickinson earlier in the day, McCartney had four kills and 12 digs. In Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Washington College, McCartney had six kills.
Lauren Laucella (Hatboro-Horsham) had four kills and two block assists in Philadelphia University’s 3-0 sweep of Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday.
