MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington junior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) was named the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19. Competing in a field of 355 runners at the 8K Gettysburg Invitational, the junior captured ninth place with a time of 26:12 and was outside the top-five by a mere six seconds. It was Kane’s fifth top-10 finish of the year for the Nittany Lions, who placed 21st out of 34 teams.
IUP’s Tim Lynch (Souderton) finished in 15th place with a time of 26:04.70 at the Go Fast River Run on Saturday at Lock Haven. Teammate Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) finished in 25th place.
Shippensburg freshman Alex Balla (Quakertown) finished eighth at the 2014 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Cross Country Championships on Sunday in Mansfield, posting a time of 25:45.8. Sophomore Alec Brand (Central Bucks East) finished 11th with a time of 25:56.7. Shippensburg won the team title.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Shippensburg freshman Sarah Latch (Central Bucks East) finished 22nd with a time of 23:22.3 at the 2014 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II Cross Country Championships held Sunday. The Red Raiders finished second in the team standings.
Kutztown’s Olivia Dettore (Central Bucks West) saw her first action of the season at Lock Haven’s Go Fast River Run on Saturday. She crossed the line in 23:47 to take 33rd place. Teammate Elizabeth McLaughlin (Upper Dublin) posted a time of 25:29.35.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) scored a goal in No. 3 Stanford’s 4-0 win over Cal on Friday. The win was the 10th straight for the Cardinals.
Emily Hawkins (Cheltenham) turned in a four-save effort over the final 46:45 in Keystone College’s 6-2 win over Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday.
Carlie Baldus (Hatboro-Horsham) and Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) each scored a goal in Delaware Valley’s 3-2 loss to Kean on Tuesday. For Prichett, it was her 10th goal of the year while Baldus scored her fifth goal.
Sophomore Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) scored her team’s lone goal in Lehigh’s 5-1 loss to Lafayette on Saturday. Tofig has eight goals (16 points) to lead the Mountain Hawks. She also is one of the top scorers in the Patriot League.
Kristin Donohue (Council Rock South) delivered a crossing pass that resulted in a goal in Messiah College’s 6-0 win over Widener on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 6-0 win over Hood, Donohue scored a goal.
Villanova junior forward Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 19. The CB South grad was recognized for her two-goal performance in the Wildcats’ 2-1 overtime win over Georgetown. The Honor Roll nod was the second for Kenney, who also received the award during her freshman campaign on Sept. 10, 2012.
Junior forward Bryn Frankhouser (Plymouth Whitemarsh) assisted on a goal in Scranton’s 6-0 win over Moravian on Saturday.
Junior Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had an assist in Quinnipiac’s 4-3 loss to Monmouth on Friday.
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 2-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday. Rebekah Hershey (Souderton) was part of a strong showing by the defense in the shutout. In Lock Haven’s 1-0 win over Richmond on Friday, Valentine contributed an assist.
Senior forward Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal in Yale’s 8-3 loss to No. 4 UConn last Sunday.
Senior Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) put an exclamation point on her final home game, scoring two goals in La Salle’s 4-1 rout of Bryant on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) picked up her 15th win of the year in The College of New Jersey’s 6-1 win over William Patterson on Tuesday.
Freshman Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored her third goal of the year in Kutztown’s 5-2 win over Mansfield on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Senior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) smashed the school’s career all-purpose yards record in Lycoming’s 34-17 loss to Widener on Saturday, rushing 17 times for 76 yards, catching five passes for 50 more and posting 66 yards on three kickoff returns. He surpassed the mark of 4,474 set by Josh Kleinfelter from 2007-10. Needhammer finished the game with 4,524.
Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) connected on a 20-yard field goal in Millersville’s 17-10 loss to Lock Haven on Saturday.
Sophomore running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 78 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries in Ursinus College’s 44-14 win over Susquehanna on Saturday. Junior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 37-yard field goal.
Freshman kicker Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem) connected on a 28-yard field goal to move to 9-for-9 on the season in Kutztown’s 31-16 road victory at East Stroudsburg. He missed a 33-yarder later in the second quarter to end his streak of consecutive field goals to open his career. He did, however, move into a tie for third place in school history for field goals in a season.
James Brennan (Upper Merion) recovered a fumble in Shippensburg’s 34-13 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Cabrini freshman Clay Anders (Souderton) shot an 84 and finished tied for 81st at the F&M Fall Invitational at Bent Creek Country Club in Lancaster. Cabrini finished 11th out of 19 teams.
Temple senior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) finished in a tie for 57th at the 30th Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate, shooting a 157. Temple finished ninth out of 12 teams.
Penn State Abington’s Mike Lam (Neshaminy) was named the NEAC Men’s Golfer of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19. The junior was the top Abington finisher at a pair of events, carding a four-over 76 to take a tie for third place out of 61 golfers at the Chestnut Hill Invitational before tying for 12th place out of 87 participants with a score of 78 at the par-70 Rutgers-Camden Invitational.
Lam shot a 72 (+2) to finish first overall among 11 golfers at the Rosemont Invitational on Tuesday, Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) finished second, carding an 81 (+11), while Kevin O’Connor (Neshaminy) tied for third, carding an 81 (+12). The Nittany Lions finished first out of two teams.
La Salle senior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 74 (+2), tying his low round of the fall and tying for ninth overall at the inaugural Shootout at Militia Hill on Saturday. He had four birdies in his round.
MEN’S SOCCER
Kyle MacDonald (Pennsbury) contributed an assist in No. 12 Penn State’s 2-1 loss to West Virginia on Wednesday night.
Austin Transue (Neshaminy) scored the game winner in 25th-ranked Bloomsburg’s 2-1 overtime victory over Shippensburg on Saturday. Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West) contributed his second assist on the game winner. Earlier, he assisted on a goal by Matt Zima (Council Rock North). The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies, who improved to 10-4 on the year.
Junior Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute in La Salle’s 1-0 win over Saint Joseph’s on Friday evening. Sophomore Matt Robinson (North Penn) assisted on the goal.
Alex Lean (Council Rock North) contributed an assist in West Chester’s 6-0 win over Pittsburgh Johnstown on Wednesday.
Junior Mike Camacho (Harry S Truman) scored a goal while teammate Ryan New (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist in Cabrini’s 8-0 win at Rosemont College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Berkeley (N.J.) College, New contributed an assist.
Kristopher Davis (Central Bucks East) scored his first goal of the season on a header in Elizabethtown’s 3-2 win over Goucher on Wednesday.
Joel Klapper (Central Bucks West) scored his second goal of the season in Penn State Abington’s 4-0 win over Bryn Athyn on Saturday. With the win, Abington clinched the fifth and final NEAC playoff spot. In last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Penn College, keeper Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) had five saves.
Senior Ryan Roedel (Neshaminy) converted a penalty kick in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-0 win at Centenary on Wednesday.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) scored his team’s only goal in Lock Haven’s 2-1 loss to Millersville on Saturday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Penn State freshman Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) was named the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19 for her performance in wins at No. 24 Michigan and Michigan State. This is the second Freshman of the Week honor for Schafer. The Neshaminy grad scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Michigan, her fifth tally of the year and second game winner. She played 172 minutes out of a possible 180 minutes in wins at No. 24 Michigan and Michigan State. In both matches, she took three shots, leading Penn State in both contests.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) scored a goal in the 14th minute of Ursinus College’s 2-1 win over Dickinson on Friday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Washington College, Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) connected for her sixth goal of the season.
West Chester senior Carly Yost (North Penn) was named the PSAC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19. The North Penn grad is the first West Chester women’s soccer player to earn the award this season. Yost began the week scoring a game winner to lift the Golden Rams over Shippensburg 1-0, scoring with two minutes remaining in the second half of the game. She added her second goal of the week in the Golden Rams’ 2-0 win over Millersville. For the week, Yost scored two goals in two games and helped the Rams secure two conference wins. The Golden Rams finished the week with an 11-1 conference record and 12-1 overall.
Yost, Carly Henry (Pennridge), and Haley Mangiaruga (North Penn) each contributed an assist in West Chester’s 9-0 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Wednesday.
Senior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Gettysburg College’ 2-1 win at McDaniel on Wednesday.
Junior Caitlin Sheehan (Pennridge) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 2-0 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Lock Haven, Sheehan scored her first goal of the year.
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) took a free kick that helped set up a goal in Cedarville’s 2-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
Megan Gerhart (North Penn) recorded 11 saves in Virginia Wesleyan’s 3-0 win over Guilford College on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 7-0 win over Eastern Mennonite, Zoe Traficante (Central Bucks West) hit nothing but net on a shot from 30 yards out. Gerhart protected the net for VWC in the first half.
Alyssa Kirk (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Temple’s 1-0 win over Delaware State on Wednesday.
Freshman midfielder Lauren Brophy (Hatboro-Horsham) scored her first career goal in fifth-ranked East Stroudsburg’s 5-0 win at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Scheidell (Council Rock North) and freshman midfielder Shannon Boyle (Council Rock South) had assists. The win was the 14th consecutive win for the Warriors.
Theo Horozoglou (Council Rock South) contributed a goal and an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-1 win over Alvernia on Monday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) scored a goal in Elizabethtown’s 5-0 win over Drew on Saturday. It was her team-leading 11th goal of the season. In Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Moravian, Cerankowski scored on a header.
Brigitta Good (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 loss in double overtime to Richard Stockton College on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 2-1 overtime victory over Penn College, Kayla Nolan (Abington) scored her conference-leading 17th goal of the year. Megan Murphy (William Tennent) fed the ball to Nolan and also scored the game’s golden goal in the 97th minute.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) earned three victories in Albright College’s 104-101 win over Lycoming on Saturday. He won the 100 freestyle in a time of 10:52.61, and in the 500, the senior claimed victory in 4:58.91. He also was a member of the 400 medley relay team that won with a time of 3:42.18. Teammate Tim Resch (Springfield) was part of the 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:30.23. In Tuesday’s 100-97 win at Lebanon College, Sutton captured two individual titles and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team in Albright College’s 100-97 win at Lebanon College. Sutton was victorious in the 800 freestyle in a time of 9:17.11 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.32. The 200 medley relay posted a time of 1:51.98. Resch was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.74.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Abby Miller (Neshaminy) finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.63 in Lock Haven’s 119-76 win over Mansfield on Saturday.
Kutztown’s Aimee Watkins (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 12:05.40 at the tri-meet with Misericoridia and East Stroudsburg on Saturday. She was 10th in the 500 free (6:00.77). Bridget Perdoch (Pennsbury) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.51) and 200 breaststroke (2:39.60). Caitlyn Falguera (Hatboro-Horsham) was fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:25.67), ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.61) and 10th in the 100 IM (2:39.62).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Gwynedd Mercy junior Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) was named to the Colonial States
Athletic Conference first team. Sophomore Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) was named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Gwynedd Mercy repeated as CSAC champions, defeating Marywood 5-3 in Saturday’s title match. Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles while Kristen Kriebel notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Michener also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-3 win. In Friday’s 5-0 semifinal win over Immaculata, Michener earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles and was part of the second doubles team that notched an 8-6 win. Caffarello earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles, and Caffarello and Kriebel earned an 8-1 win at third doubles.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Taylor Gasperi (Harry S Truman) had five digs in Rosemont College’s 3-0 loss to Neumann on Tuesday.
Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had 27 digs in UMBC’s 3-0 loss to Binghamton last Sunday.
Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) filled the stat sheet with nine kills, nine assists and 19 digs in Holy Family’s 3-2 loss to Dominican on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 los to Georgian Court, Devyn Ingram finished the
match with 24 set assists and nine digs. Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) totaled six kills and 12 digs. In Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Goldey-Beacom, Melanie Ingram contributed 10 kills, three service aces and 15 digs. Devyn Ingram recorded a match-high 43 set assists as she totaled 40-plus assists for the third time this season. Her season-high is 49 set assists at Goldey-Beacom on Sept. 30.
Junior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) controlled the offense with 30 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 win at Cairn University on Thursday. The Upper Merion grad is just 35 assists shy of the Cabrini all-time record of 2,810 assists held by Lizzie Williams (2006-09).
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) had 13 kills and three blocks in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-1 win over Washington College on Saturday.
Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) had 29 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 loss to Delaware Valley on Saturday. She had 37 assists in the Nittany Lions’ 3-1 loss to Alvernia later that same day.
Senior tri-captain Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) connected for a double-double in UConn’s 3-1 loss to SMU on Sunday, finishing with 12 kills and 17 digs. It was the 10th double-double of the year for Maugle. In last Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Houston, Maugle had a team-high 14 kills.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had 13 kills and recorded a .375 hitting percentage in Kutztown’s 3-1 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 win over PSAC Eastern Division-leading Lock Haven, Stringer had 11 kills.
