MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh), the leading returning rebounder, was named Temple
University captain. Bond becomes the first solo team captain in coach Fran Dunphy’s 10 seasons at the helm. “Jaylen was the consensus choice by a vote of his teammates,” Dunphy said. “He’s everything a coach wants in a captain. He is a hard worker who leads by example and, most importantly, he has earned the respect of his teammates.” Bond transferred to Temple prior to the 2013-14 season after playing his first two seasons at the University of Texas. After sitting out his first year at Temple, he averaged 7.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while starting 29 out of 35 games played. The 6-8 forward was named second team all-Philadelphia Big 5 and honorable mention all-conference. He was second on the team and sixth in the conference in steals (1.4 spg).
Bond had eight rebounds in Temple’s 96-67 loss to No. 1 North Carolina in the Veterans Classic at the Naval Academy on Friday.
Freshman Matt Penecale (Abington) recorded 12 points (5-for-10), six rebounds, four assists and three steals in his first collegiate game in West Chester’s 94-93 win over Division III power Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday evening.
Wes Brooks (North Penn) scored a team high 15 points in McDaniel’s 78-55 come-from-behind win over Immaculata in its season opener on Friday.
Sophomore Matt Scamuffo (Central Bucks South) poured in a game-high 18 points as he was 6-for-11 from the floor – including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the stripe in the final two minutes of the game – in York College’s 59-46 win at Stevenson University on Friday night. He also added four rebounds and three assists.
Freshman Evan Slone (Souderton) scored 17 points in Arcadia’s 79-61 win over Haverford on Friday night in the MAC-Centennial Challenge. He also grabbed a team-best eight boards while handing out an assist, blocking a shot and registering a steal. In Saturday’s 86-58 win over Muhlenburg to wrap up the MAC-Centennial Challenge, Slone posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Sophomore Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) finished with 19 points and eight rebounds in DeSales University’s 85-77 win over Penn State-Berks on Saturday.
Evan Ward (Central Bucks West) contributed seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench in Albright’s 90-83 loss to Haverford on Saturday on day two of the MAC-Centennial Challenge. In Friday’s 74-66 loss to Muhlenberg, Ward scored eight points.
Redshirt junior Ryan Connolly (Souderton) scored a team-high 16 points in his first game back since the 2013-14 season in Kutztown’s 120-54 win over SUNY-ESF on Friday night. He was 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-5 at the foul line. He also recorded a career high six assists in the game. Preseason All-PSAC East forward Josh Johnson (Norristown) opened his junior campaign with 14 points (6-of-8 field goals), a team high nine rebounds, three assists, three steals (tied career high) and two blocks. Redshirt freshman Anthony Lee (Abington) led the bench scoring with 12 points (3-for-4 field goals, 6-for-6 foul line), four rebounds and three assists.
Julian Hyden (Bensalem) contributed 15 points, nine boards, three blocks and three steals in Gwynedd Mercy’s 94-93 loss to Division II power West Chester in Saturday’s season opener. Aaron Morgan (Council Rock North) chipped in 12 points.

Freshman Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) shared team scoring honors with 19 points off the bench in Michigan’s 90-62 win over Binghamton on Saturday. The CB West alum connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field, which included two three-pointers. She also had team highs in rebounds with nine – seven on the defensive end – and three steals in 23 minutes of action. In last Sunday’s 109-39 exhibition win over Ferris State, Munger contributed 17 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists in 20 minutes off the bench. Shippensburg senior Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) was named MVP of the 2015 Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic after recording a double-double in the Raiders 85-48 win over Davis & Elkins in Saturday’s title game. Sophomore Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) knocked down a pair of three-pointers on her way to 10 points off the bench. In Friday’s 63-53 win over Saint Michael’s, Knauer had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Penn State junior Connor Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded an 11th place finish with a time of 31:07.8 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Princeton, N.J., on Friday. Quinn was the top Penn State finisher.
Junior Francis Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) was the first La Salle runner to cross the finish line at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday at Princeton Cross Country Course, finishing 44th with a time of 31:50.5 on the 10k course. The Explorers finished eighth out of 25 teams after finishing 15th last year.
Temple senior Alex Izewski (Central Bucks East) placed 90th with a time of 32:47.7 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday at Princeton. Temple finished 15th out of 25 teams.
Penn State Abington senior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) closed out his career with his highest ranking ever at the NCAA DIII Mid-East Regional Championships on Saturday, placing 53rd overall with a time of 26:42.6 on the windy course. Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) finished in 248th with a time of 29:31, and Alek Clementson (William Tennent) finished in 292nd with a time of 30:28.
Ross Wilson (Council Rock North) finished 23rd with a time of 31:32.2 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon at West Windsor Fields in Princeton, N.J. Penn finished second as a team. Prior to this season, the Quakers hadn’t cracked the top three in the Mid-Atlantic since 2004 (third place). As a result of its showing, Penn will be headed to the NCAA Championships since 1975. The championships will be held in Louisville, Ky., next weekend.
Ursinus College’s Evan Cirafesi (Upper Merion) posted a time of 29:54.1 at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals hosted by Dickinson College on Saturday. The Bears finished 38th in a 52-team field.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) finished in sixth place with a time of 21:09.9 as Penn State captured its first Mid-Atlantic Regional title on Friday in Princeton, N.J., since 2012. Gerlach earned All-Region honors. The Nittany Lions will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the 2015 Division I cross country championships Nov. 21.
Freshman Kaitlin Poiesz (Central Bucks South) was the second La Salle runner to cross the finish line at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in Princeton on Friday. She finished in 54th place with a time of 23:04.3. La Salle finished in ninth place out of 30 teams, moving up three spots from their 12th place finish last season.
Emma Barbagallo (Council Rock North) posted a time of 24:33.8 while Natalie Ross (Souderton) posted a time of 25:06.0 to finish 116th and 141st respectively, rounding out Messiah College’s scorers at the NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional Championships on Saturday. Messiah finished in 15th place as a team.
Freshman Riley Engel (Council Rock North) posted a time of 24:57.5 to finish in 129th place as the second Ursinus runner to cross the finish line at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals hosted by Dickinson College on Saturday.
Sophomore Brittany Finn (Upper Moreland) was Gwynedd Mercy’s second finisher at the NCAA Mid-East Regional meet, posting a time of 25:58 and finishing 193rd. Emily Makara (Council Rock South) posted a time of 26:44.
Bloomsburg graduate student Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) earned a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region Team. Dodds finished second overall at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Lock Haven. With her time of 20:41, she finished nine seconds behind Edinboro’s Ida Narbuvall. Dodds will be the only Bloomsburg representative at the NCAA Division II National Championships on Nov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri.
FIELD HOCKEY
Muhlenberg sophomore Emma Rosenthal (Central Bucks East) received second team All-Centennial Conference honors. The CB East graduate had a breakout season after playing only a handful of minutes in goal as a freshman. She started 15 games, including 10 CC contests, and was second in the league with a 1.14 goals-against average. She recorded four shutouts in CC action and made a career-high 10 saves against nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall.
Freshman Shelby Landes (Souderton) picked up on save in cage for her fifth shutout of the season in No. 9 Messiah College’s 3-0 win over SUNY New Paltz in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. All five shutouts have come in the last eight games. The win vaulted Messiah into the Elite 8 for the 21st time in program history and the first time since 2010 when they were the national runner-up. In Sunday’s 4-2 loss to The College of New Jersey in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Regional championship, Landes recorded four saves.
Junior Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) collected one save in The College of New Jersey’s 4-2 win over Messiah in Sunday’s 2015 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Regional Championship. TCNJ punched its ticket to the national semifinal game and will continue its quest for the 12th NCAA championship in program history. In Saturday’s 3-0 win over Rhodes College, Schlupp recorded one save.
FOOTBALL
Freshman Josh Adams (Central Bucks South) had a record-setting 98-yard touchdown run with 9:59 remaining until halftime in No. 6 Notre Dame’s 28-7 win over Wake Forest on Saturday. The CB South graduate’s 98-yard TD run is the longest play from scrimmage in Notre Dame’s storied football history, and it tied the longest rush by a freshman in NCAA history. Adams tied an NCAA freshman mark set by Jerald Sowell of Tulane at Alabama in 1993 and tied by Jordan Parker of Middle Tennessee against Troy in 2012. A 6-1, 212-pound freshman, Adams’ 98-yard TD run is also the longest play from scrimmage in the nation this season, topping the previous longest play, which was a 95-yard TD run by Hawaii’s Paul Davis against UC Davis on Sept. 19. “When I broke it, all I could see was (receiver) Chris Brown running down faster than I was down the sidelines, so I was like, ‘I gotta catch up,’ He did a great job blocking downfield,” Adams said. Adams led the rushing attack with 141 yards on 17 carries.
Quarterback Matt Johns (Central Bucks South) led his team with 260 passing yards and four touchdowns in Virginia’s 38-31 loss to Louisville on Saturday. Johns threw his fourth touchdown pass with 1:16 remaining to cut Louisville’s lead to 38-31. The Cavaliers then recovered the onside kick but were flagged for an illegal formation, allowing Louisville to run out the clock.
Junior Steve Gozur (North Penn) finished with 10 tackles to share team honors in Widener’s 20-3 loss to Delaware Valley in the annual Keystone Cup battle on Saturday.
Senior Gerard Wendowski (North Penn) had six catches for 68 yards in East Stroudsburg’s 49-37 win over Gannon on Saturday. A four-year letter winner, Wendowski saw action in 38 games and started 14. This season he had 49 receptions for 781 yards with nine touchdowns. He closed his career with 80 catches for 1,211 yards and nine touchdowns.
Senior defensive end Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) registered nine tackles and a pair of sacks to break the PSAC all-time record for sacks in West Chester’s 61-12 loss to Slippery Rock on Saturday. He closed out his four-year career with 33.5 sacks and finished 2015 with 13.5 sacks. Junior linebacker Ralph Reeves (North Penn) registered a team-best 12 tackles, including one forced fumble.
Brandon Shippen (Norristown) had three receptions for 28 yards in Temple’s 44-23 loss to the University of South Florida on Saturday.
Craig Reynolds (Abington) had three carries for 34 yards and 10 receptions for 60 yards in Kutztown’s 45-17 win over Clarion on Saturday. Kenny Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had four tackles.
Ursinus College senior Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 8. The Upper Dublin graduate accounted for all the Bears’ points in a 10-9 loss to Muhlenberg. He booted three field goals of 25, 34 and 40 yards while also averaging 41.6 yards on seven punts.
Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) converted a 21-yard field goal in Millersville’s 31-21 win over Edinboro on Saturday. Rasheed Johnson (Norristown) closed his career with 332 tackles, placing him tied for fifth all-time at Millersville.
Senior wide receiver Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) closed out a stellar career with three catches for 114 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of Shippensburg’s 69-20 rout of Mercyhurst on Saturday. Saturday’s touchdown gives Mayer 228 career points scored – the second most by a non-kicker in SU history. He finished his career with the second most catches in SU history and the fourth most receiving yards. As a punt returner, Mayer set the new record for best career punt return average at 14.3 yards per return. Mayer’s 22.3 yards per punt return this season was also a new SU single season record.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ursinus College junior midfielder Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) was named to the All-Centennial Conference second team. The Souderton graduate was the leader of the Bears’ midfield unit. He started all 16 games, recording a goal and an assist.
Bloomsburg redshirt sophomore Austin Transue (Neshaminy) earned a spot on the All-PSAC first team. The Neshaminy graduate put together one of the finest seasons in program history, finishing the season with 13 goals and four assists for 30 points. His 13 goals marked the ninth highest single season goal total in Bloomsburg record books. He finished second in the PSAC in goals (13) and points (30), trailing only the PSAC Athlete of the Year – Millersville’s Jaime Vazquez – in both categories. He also finished second in the PSAC with seven game-winning goals. Transue was tied for fourth in the country in game-winning tallies, tied for 23rd in goals and tied for 30th in total points.
Bloomsburg senior defender Matt Zima (Council Rock North) was named to the All-PSAC first team. The CR North graduate recorded one assist on the season in earning a spot on the first team for the second consecutive season. His only helper came in a 2-0 win over Lock Haven on Sept. 15. Last season, Zima became the first Daktronics All-American in program history after earning honorable mention accolades. Zima was an integral part of a defensive until that allowed only 21 goals in 19 games
(seven shutouts) during the 2015 campaign.
Bloomsburg senior defender Matt Bamford (Central Bucks West) was named to the All-PSAC second team. The CB West graduate recorded one assist, posting a helper against St. Thomas Aquinas in the season opener. He was an All-PSAC second team and an NSCAA All-Atlantic Region third team selection a year ago. Like Zima, Bamford was an integral part of a defensive unit that allowed only 21 goals in 19 games (seven shutouts) during the 2015 campaign.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
La Salle’s Marykate Bateman (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team, the Atlantic 10 Conference announced last Sunday. In a 2-1 upset of Saint Joseph’s in an opening round game, Bateman scored the game-tying goal and later assisted on the game winner in the 69th minute. The junior also tied the A-10 semifinal against Duquesne at 1-1 with a goal in the 24th minute. The sixth-seeded Explorer upset No. 3 St. Joseph’s before falling to eventual champion Duquesne.
McDaniel sophomore Kristen Upton (Central Bucks South) earned second team All-Centennial Conference recognition. It is her first All-CC selection. Upton, who started all 19 games, was a stalwart on the backline that allowed just 11 goals in nearly 1800 minutes this season. She also contributed seven goals to the offense.
Virginia Wesleyan sophomore midfielder Zoe Traficante (Central Bucks West) earned her first career All-ODAC honor with a first team nod as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released the women’s soccer all-conference teams on Wednesday. Traficante was instrumental in the central midfield for the Marlins, scoring two goals on the year with a pair of assists. Both of her goals were game winners as she scored the deciding goal against Hollins University and Randolph College.
Elizabethtown senior Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) received All-Landmark second team honors. It was her fourth all-conference honor. Despite missing several games late in the season, Cerankowski was still viewed as a top player for her production throughout the season. The senior was tied for fourth in the Landmark in goals scored with seven, tied for fifth with five assists and fifth with 19 points. She was Elizabethtown’s top offensive option. During her six-game point streak, Cerankowski scored in four of those games in a row. The Neshaminy graduate propelled the Blue Jays past St. Mary’s in double overtime with the game-winning goal in the 104th minute. She also came through with a single game career best three assists in a 3-1 win over Moravian.
Ursinus College junior Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) was named to the All-Centennial Conference second team for the second straight season. The Pennridge graduate was the top offensive performer on an Ursinus squad that finished 12-6-1 and 7-3 in Centennial Conference play and reached the conference semifinals for the first time in five years. Jasinski started all 19 games and netted a team-best 10 goals, good for fifth in the Centennial Conference, to go along with a pair of assists. Her 22 points ranked seventh in the league. Jaskinski notched the game-winning goal in overtime against Muhlenberg in Ursinus’ regular season finale. She is the first Bear to earn back-to-back conference laurels since 2011.
Ursinus junior Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) earned All-Centennial Conference honorable mention recognition. The Neshaminy grad started 19 games, registering six goals and two assists to tie for second on the team with 14 points. Three of her markers were game winners, all of them during a streak that saw Ursinus blank Gettysburg, Alvernia and Franklin & Marshall.
Ursinus sophomore midfielder Anna Budny (Council Rock North) received
All-Centennial Conference honorable mention recognition. The CR North graduate started all 19 games and was an integral member of a defense that produced nine blank sheets, including one against Gettysburg in the first round of the conference playoffs. Budny also was named to the Academic All-Centennial Team, which recognizes sophomores, juniors and seniors who boast a 3.40 GPA or higher.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Senior CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 315.60 in La Salle’s 134-107 loss at George Mason on Friday. With his performance, the CB South graduate qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships.
Sophomore Jacob Schellinger (North Penn) was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:47.04 in Arcadia’s 139-42 dual meet win over Wilkes University on Saturday. He also was part of the winning 400 free relay that finished in a pool record time of 3:23.63.
Junior Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:40.05 in Ursinus College’s 60-35 win at McDaniel on Saturday. He also was part of the winning 200 free relay (1:29.94). Freshman Travis Venables (Pennsbury) finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.28. In Tuesday’s quad meet with York College, St. Vincent’s College and St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Cooper finished fifth in the 200 free. Venables was second in the 50 free (22.50). Max Coulter (Pennridge) finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke. The Bears finished on top of St. Vincent’s (115-89), St. Mary’s (118-86) and York (122-82).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Freshman Lauren Griffith (Central Bucks East) earned a first place victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.41 in Widener’s 148.5-113.5 loss to Swarthmore on Saturday, finishing just thirteen hundredths of a second over the second place swimmer. The CB East alum also added a second place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:19.12. In last Saturday’s quad meet against Messiah, Hood and FDU-Florham, Griffith was part of the winning 200 free relay that clocked in at 1:42.94. Widener earned wins over hood (141-63) and FDU-Florham (166-31) but fell to host Messiah (137-67).
Sophomore Sydney Szopo (Upper Moreland) finished in second place in the three-meter diving with a score of 252.60 in La Salle’s 149-94 loss at George Mason on Friday. She also finished third in the one-meter even with a total of 229.88. In last Saturday’s tri-meet against Delaware and Rider, Szopo used a score of 215.45 to finish second in the one-meter diving event. She was fifth in the five-meter with 207.15.
Arcadia junior Megan Obarowski (Council Rock South) was named MAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week
for the week ending Nov. 8. The CR South graduate had three first place finishes to help lead the Knights to their first ever dual meet win over Albright (168-86). The junior broke her own school record in the 200 butterfly with a first place time of 2:22.45. She won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:04.90 and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:58.24). Obarowski had the second fastest time in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:24.46.

In Saturday’s 152-39 win over Wilkes, Obarowski took home first place finishes in the 100 freestyle (58.83) and 200 IM (2:21.64). Freshman Kate Wojnar (Abington) was part of the first place 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:53.53.
Caitlyn Falguera (Hatboro-Horsham) finished fourth in both the 100 backstroke (1:10.56) and 50 backstroke (33.32) in Kutztown’s 151-100 win over Juniata on Saturday.
Sophomore Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) finished third in the one-meter diving event in Marist’s 192-102 triumph over rival Rider on Saturday. With the win, Marist improved to 3-0 in conference competition.
Sarah Richards (Central Bucks East) finished third with a time of 5:11.20 in the 400 individual medley in The College of New Jersey’s 207-87 loss to fourth-ranked New York University on Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Jaime Bonner (William Tennent) had six kills in Holy Family’s 3-1 win over Chestnut Hill on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the University of the Sciences, freshman Candyce Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) led the team with 12 digs while Bonner added nine kills.
Cabrini senior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion), the 2015 CSAC Player of the Year, was named to the
All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team. The Upper Merion graduate accumulated 1,186 assists this season and eclipsed the 4,000-assist plateau for her career, becoming only the fourth player in CSAC volleyball history and the first Cavalier to accomplish that feat. Koenig has directed the Cavalier offense to the tune of a .221 hitting percentage, with five Cavaliers accumulating at least 180 kills on the year. She also registered 289 digs, 43 kills, 26 service aces and 10 blocks.
Koenig posted 21 assists and seven digs and freshman Ashley Shannon (Upper Merion) had a team high 10 digs in Cabrini’s 3-0 loss to No. 16 Eastern University in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Friday.
Eastern University’s Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) was honored as the MAC Freedom Player of the
Week after being named the MAC Freedom Championship MVP. This is the second time this season Elechko has been named the player of the week. Elechko had 21 kills in two matches of the MAC Freedom Tournament. The North Penn graduate also was named to the 2015 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III All-Region Team. It was the first time she was selected to the team. In her first season as an outside hitter, she led Eastern’s attack with 339 kills. She was named first team all-MAC Freedom for the first time as well.
Elechko had a match high 17 kills in Eastern University’s 3-2 loss to Stockton University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
WRESTLING
Dan Smith (Plymouth Whitemarsh) pinned Mike Mui in 5:47 at 125 pounds to record his first career win in Elizabethtown’s 34-9 win over the Merchant Marine Academy at the New York/Pennsylvania Duals at King’s College.
Kutztown redshirt senior Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) was ranked third at 157 and fourth in a preseason national poll. An All-American last season, the CR South graduate placed seventh at nationals and had a career-high 28 wins in his junior season. He enters his senior season with 61 career wins at KU, 13th in program history.
Martoccio opened the 2015-16 campaign by pinning Division I Pittsburgh’s 157-pounder to highlight Kutztown’s season opener at the University of Maryland on Nov. 1. Martoccio’s 10th career pin came in 3:36 and combined with his win over West Liberty, won his 62nd and 63rd career matches at KU, tied for 12th in program history. Kutztown fell to Pittsburgh 46-6 but defeated West Liberty 25-12. In the win over West Liberty, Martoccio earned a 16-6 major decision.
