MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Michael Guldin (Pennridge) scored a career-high tying 18 points and senior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead DeSales to an 85-60 win over Baptist Bible College in its season opener on Saturday night. Freshman Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) had a strong debut with eight points and six boards off the bench.
Josh Johnson (Norristown) notched his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds, in Kutztown’s 80-75 loss to Shepherd University on Saturday at the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge. He made all four of his free throws as Kutztown shot 17-for-22 from the charity stripe. He played with four fouls and played 39 minutes. He was named to the Clarion Hotel Challenge all-Classic team. In Friday’s 102-74 loss to Wheeling Jesuit University, Johnson led the team in both points (20) and rebounds (8). He was 7-for-11 from the field and sank six of his eight free throws.
Evan Dunn (Central Bucks West) scored 12 points in Albright’s 80-77 loss to Muhlenberg in the Middle-Atlantic Conference-Centennial Challenge on Saturday at Arcadia University.
Junior forward Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) scored a career-high 21 points and also had a career-best 13 rebounds – eight on the offensive end – in Washington College’s 72-68 loss to Mount Aloysius in the opening
round of the Division III Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday. Senior guard Sean Brooks (North Penn) added 16 points.
Brooks was named a captain of the Washington College basketball team for the 2014-15 season. He also was a captain last season. Brooks was the Shoremen’s representative on the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team last winter and was named the team’s Most Improved Player the year before. He was the only Shoreman to start and play in all 25 games last season, averaging 7.7 points and a team-best 2.8 assists per game.
Junior Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored 16 points in Villanova’s 77-66 win over Villanova on Friday.
Luke Moyer (Souderton) scored nine points on a trio of threes in Campbell’s 97-58 win over Barber-Scotia on Friday night in its season opener.
Junior forward Ryan O’Neil (Central Bucks East) pulled down five rebounds and added three points in his first collegiate action in Moravian’s 77-73 loss to Hood College in the consolation game of the Gettysburg College Tipoff Tournament on Sunday.
Junior Julian Hyden (Bensalem) led the way with 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals in Gwynedd Mercy’s 91-59 win over Penn State-Berks on Saturday night in its season opener. Sophomore Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) also had 13 points.
Senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 15 points and added six assists, going over the 1,500-point mark (1,513) for his career in No. 4 East Stroudsburg’s 76-71 loss to Bowie State on the second day of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge at Lincoln University on Saturday. In Friday’s 92-72 win at Lincoln University, Grant had 11 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Ciara Andrews (Cheltenham) scored a team-high 19 points in St. Joseph’s 76-52 loss to No. 24 Rutgers on Friday. The Cheltenham grad also had six rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Alvernia University’s 56-55 loss to Mt. St. Vincent in the opening game of the McDaniel College Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.
Junior forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) combined with teammate Kelly Sugalski to score 14 of their team’s last 18 points in Washington College’s 59-49 win over Brooklyn College in the first round of Ramapo College’s Roadrunner Tip-Off tournament on Saturday. Kendall led the Shorewomen with 13 points.
Kendall was selected to serve as a captain of the Washington College team for the 2014-15 season. In 2013-14 season, Kendall made 10 starts in 22 games, averaging 6.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. She was named the team’s Most Improved Player as a freshman. Kendall is a two-sport student-athlete, contributing 16 goals and four assists for the lacrosse team last spring.
Freshman Bianca Picard (Souderton) scored six points on a pair of three-pointers in NJIT’s 61-56 loss to New Hampshire on Friday.
Emily O’Donnell (William Tennent) scored 10 points in Albright’s 65-60 loss to Marymount at the Pablo Coto Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) had a team-high 13 points in 31 minutes in Widener’s 61-42 loss to Mary Washington in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament on Sunday. In Saturday’s 64-62 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Gallagher recorded 18 points in her first collegiate game. The guard led the team with three made baskets from beyond the arc in 40 minutes played for the Pride.
Jessica Schmidt (Abington) had 14 points and four rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 93-30 win over Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday.
Senior guard Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) handed out a career-high seven assists (to just two turnovers) to go with four points, three rebounds and a pair of steals in Chestnut Hill’s 78-56 loss to American International College at Philadelphia University on Saturday. In Friday’s 60-57 loss to the College of Saint Rose, Felder finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) had 12 points and eight rebounds in Princeton’s 79-62 win over Duquesne on Sunday.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) had 10 points and five rebounds in Delaware Valley’s 67-35 rout of Lehman in the first round of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament at Marymount University on Saturday.
Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) had a team-high 22 points in Cairn University’s 80-57 win over Wilson Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored seven points and added nine rebounds in Shippensburg’s 79-55 win over Bowie State in the 2014 Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic finale on Saturday. In Friday’s 73-67 loss to Johnson C. Smith, Knauer led the Raiders with 20 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) added 12 points off the bench.
Senior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 14 points and also had six rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 84-63 loss to Lebanon Valley in the championship game of the 2014 Gwynedd Mercy Tipoff tournament. Matthews was named to the all-tournament team. In Gwynedd Mercy’s 67-61 win over Manhattanville on Saturday, Matthews came up big on the boards with 13 rebounds and also added nine points.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington junior Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) finished 70th overall out of 343 runners with a time of 26:40.6 at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals on Saturday. The Nittany Lions finished 30th out of 47 teams, their highest regional ranking ever.
La Salle sophomore Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) finished 87th with a time of 32:31 and Fran Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) finished 89th with a time of 32:32 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Friday. La Salle finished 15th out of 25 total teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State’s Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) earned all-region honors for her top 25 finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday. The Pennridge grad completed the 6k course in a time of 21:13 to finish 21st. Penn State finished fifth as a team.
Elizabethtown’s Liz Wedekind (Pennsbury) posted a time of 23:44.0 to finish 66th at the NCAA Division III Mid-East Regional on Saturday. The Blue Jays, ranked 17th in the country, finished third as a team.
Cairn University’s Hannah Eichner (Cheltenham) posted a time of 32:21.3 at the NCAA Mideast Regionals on Saturday.
Natalie Ross (Souderton) was the fourth Messiah runner and 107th overall with a time of 24:27.0 at the NCAA Regionals on Saturday. Emma Barbagallo (Council Rock North) placed 113th with a personal record time of 24:31.1 to round out the Falcon scoring. Messiah finished 16th of the 52 teams.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Brittany Finn (Upper Moreland) was the 45th fastest freshmen out of 104 freshmen competing at the NCAA Mideast Regionals on Saturday, posting a time of 25:19.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) contributed a goal and an assist in No. 8 Stanford’s 2-1 overtime victory over No. 10 Louisville in an opening round game of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Becker connected on her 10th goal of the year at the 3:12 mark of the opening half. She assisted on the game winner in overtime. Stanford is 5-0 in overtime games this season. The win was Stanford’s first NCAA Tournament win in program history. Stanford saw its record-breaking season come to a close Sunday when it dropped a 3-1 decision at No. 3 Connecticut in the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) recorded three saves to notch her fourth shutout of the season in The College of New Jersey’s 1-0 win over Catholic University in Sunday’s NCAA Division III quarterfinal game. The Lions have advanced to the final four for the 21st time and the first since they claimed the national title in 2011. TCNJ will take on Middlebury College on Saturday in Lexington, Va. In Saturday’s 4-0 win over SUNY New Paltz, Schlupp made three saves.
Kutztown freshman midfielder Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the All-PSAC second team. The PW grad burst on the scene in her freshman campaign. She replaced two-time All-American in the midfield and worked her way to being one of three freshmen in the entire conference to be named to the all-conference team. After earning all-state honors at PW, Konowal started all 18 games as a freshman at KU. She scored three goals and notched two assists and was clearly one of the best in the PSAC at carrying the ball coast-to-coast.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) contributed a goal in top-ranked West Chester’s 3-0 win over No. 2 Millersville in the PSAC Championship Game on Saturday.
Bloomsburg sophomore Alexis Carroll (Council Rock South) was named to the All-PSAC third team. In her first season since transferring from Salisbury (Md.), Carroll started all 17 games for the Huskies. The sophomore defender recorded two defensive saves in the 2014 season.
FOOTBALL
University of California (Pa.) senior Jack Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2014 Capitol One Academic All-District first team. The Hatboro-Horsham grad is an education (mathematics) major and boasts a 3.43 GPA.
Senior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) ran for a school record 299 yards to break a bevy of records in his final collegiate game, smashing the school’s career record for rushing yards with his last run, a 50-yard touchdown with 2:47 left to lift Lycoming College to a 45-27 win over FDU-Florham on Friday. Needhammer smashed the school record for rushing yards in a game of 253 set in 2001, doing it on 30 carries. He broke Josh Kleinfelter’s record of 3,664 career rushing yards, finishing with 3,713 yards in his career.
Needhammer was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 16 for his performance in Lycoming’s 45-27 win over FDU-Florham. In the end, Needhammer finished his career with a school record 42 touchdowns, 39 rushing touchdowns and 5,291 all-purpose yards. He set a single season record for rushing touchdowns (13), all-purpose yards (1,867) and kick return yards (482). He also set the single game all-purpose yardage record of 339 yards. The award is the fourth in Needhammer’s career. He also earned it on Nov. 2, 2014, after posting a then record 305 all-purpose yards against Misericordia on Oct. 6, 2013, after a 144-yard game against 16th-ranked Delaware Valley and on Nov. 4, 2012, after rushing for 127 yards against Stevenson.
DJ McFadden (Abington) caught three passes for 52 yards in Bloomsburg’s 28-26 loss to Slippery Rock in the PSAC Championship game on Saturday.
Junior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) tallied 198 receiving yards on a career-best 14 receptions in Shippensburg’s 42-21 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday.
Wide receiver Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass in No. 17 West Chester’s 28-17 win over IUP on Saturday. He finished with four receptions for 68 yards.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Bruce Campbell (Pennsbury) was 22-for-36 for 375 yards and two touchdowns in his third career start in East Stroudsburg’s 66-41 loss to Gannon in the season finale for both schools.
ESU redshirt defensive end Brandon Gattelli (Bensalem) finished the season with 23.5 sacks to finish fifth in school history in career sacks.
MEN’S SOCCER
West Chester freshman Alex Lean (Council Rock North) was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. He becomes the first PSAC Freshman of the Year from West Chester since 2002. The Rock North grad recorded four goals and four assists, equaling 12 points on the season while appearing in 17 games with 15 starts for the Golden Rams.
West Chester senior Christian Benner (Souderton) was named to the All-PSAC first team. The Souderton grad played a significant role in the Golden Rams’ five shutouts this season in addition to registering a goal for two points.
Ursinus sophomore forward Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) received All-Centennial Conference honorable mention recognition. It is his first all-conference recognition. Molyneaux finished the season with 11 points, contributing six assists and three goals for the season.
La Salle junior forward Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) was named to the All-Atlantic 10
Conference second team. The Wissahickon grad paced the Explorers in goals (6), assists (4) and points (16) this season and ranks in the top 10 in the Atlantic 10 in all three categories. Farrell started 17 games for the Blue and Gold this season and scored game-winning goals in 1-0 wins over Saint Joseph’s and Bucknell. Farrell also assisted on game-winning goals in victories over Stetson and Manhattan. “Joey’s been a competitor and a great leader for us,” assistant coach Bob Wilkinson said. “He’s extremely involved in everything that we do offensively.”
La Salle sophomore Matt Robinson (North Penn) earned a spot on the All-Academic team. Robinson made 17 starts for the Explorers, tallying 10 points on four goals and two assists on the year. He scored three game-winning goals this season, including the golden goal in the 94th minute of a win over LIU Brooklyn on Oct. 4. Robinson also assisted on Farrell’s game winner against Saint Joseph’s and the game winner against St. Bonaventure. Robinson maintains a 3.84 GPA as an Accounting major.
Farrell scored on a header in the 89th minute of La Salle’s 3-1 loss to Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinal on Thursday night.
Bloomsburg junior defender Matt Zima (Council Rock North) was named to the All-PSAC first team. The Rock North grad started 19 matches this year and has displayed an all-around game, netting four goals with two assists for a total of 10 points.
Bloomsburg junior defender Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West) was named to the All-PSAC second team. Along with playing stellar defense, Bamford leads the Huskies and is among the PSAC leaders in assists with six this season, including setting up the game-winning goal in Bloomsburg’s PSAC semifinal win over Seton Hall.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Gettysburg senior midfielder Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team. It was her second all-conference award after earning second team recognition during her freshman season. Despite missing the last two games, Phillips is third on the team in goals (four), second in assists (three) and tied for third in points (11). Three of her goals were game winners, including her penalty kick in the Bullets’ 1-0 victory over Swarthmore College. Gettysburg saw its season end in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament when the Bullets fell to Capital University 5-4 in penalty kicks after battling to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes. Phillips, who had not played the entire game due to an injury, connected on a penalty kick.
Elizabethtown junior Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) was named to the All-Landmark first team. A 2013 All-CC first team selection, this was the junior midfielder’s third all-conference honor and second straight on the first team. She set a career best in goals (11) and points (28), which were both second on the team. A tireless worker on the left flank, Cerankowski started and played in every game for Elizabethtown. She ranked high in the Landmark in points (fifth), assists (tied for fifth) and goals (sixth). Six of her 11 goals came in conference play, which placed her third in the Landmark. The Neshaminy grad recorded two hat tricks on the season, one in the season opener against Keystone and the other against Goucher in October.
Ursinus sophomore Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) was named to the All-Centennial second team after leading the Bears with seven goals, the most in a single season since 2010. The standout midfielder finds herself in seventh place among Centennial Conference scorers. The sophomore also added one assist and led the team with a total of 15 points for the season.
Cara Deola (Council Rock South) contributed a goal and assist in West Chester’s 2-2 tie after regulation and overtime with California (Pa.) in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Sunday. West Chester went on to earn a 4-2 win in penalty kicks. The Golden Rams will host West Virginia Wesleyan in the Atlantic Region Championships next Friday.
Meghan Kaminski (Central Bucks South) recorded one save in 20 minutes on the pitch in Penn State’s 4-1 win over Buffalo in Friday’s opening round game of the NCAA Tournament.
MEN’S SWIMMING
TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) took second with a season-best 311.15 score in Penn State’s split with Virginia (212-136) and Michigan (140-.50-212.50) last Saturday. His 312.45 score on the 1-meter board was good enough for third. Bob Bantley (Upper Dublin) finished third in the 100 free with a time of 45.38 on day one of Penn State’s meets with Michigan and Virginia.
Sophomore Ian Flynn (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:10.83 in Rider’s 185-115 win over Marist on Saturday.
Jon Krail (North Penn) finished first in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:52.22 in Washington & Jefferson’s 144-118 loss to York (Pa.) on Saturday. Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.09.In Wednesday’s 167-113 loss to Westminster, Krail finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:05.75.
Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of Albright’s record-breaking 800 freestyle relay. The team finished first in the event with a time of 7:25.79 to break the pool record of 7:26.71 set during the 2011-12 season. Albright defeated Arcadia 144-118. Sutton captured a pair of individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:48.27) and 200 backstroke (2:00.38). He was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:42.66. Tim Resch (Springfield) finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.24), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.14) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.75).
Senior Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:26.98 in Gettysburg’s sweep of Messiah and Susquehanna in a non-conference tri-meet on Saturday. Gettysburg improved to 4-0 on the season and has now won its last 16 dual meets, dating back to Feb. 2, 2013. The Bullets defeated Messiah 173-85 and topped Susquehanna 145-114.
Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.31 in Ursinus College’s 109-90 win over McDaniel on Saturday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Liz Muller (Central Bucks West) was part of the record-breaking 800 freestyle relay in Albright’s 149-103 win over Arcadia Thursday night. The foursome raced to a time of 8:19.41, besting the old record of 8:23.36 that was set on Jan. 7, 2012. Muller was part of the winning 400 medley relay that posted a time of 4:19.51. She finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:09.08. Jessie Mabone (William Tennent) finished sixth in the 50 freestyle (37.52) and the 100 butterfly (1:35.85).
Pat Stasio (Hatboro-Horsham) is now eighth in the 100 freestyle after swimming 48.51 in Bloomsburg’s 141-97 win over Dickinson on Saturday.
Bridget Perdock (Pennsbury) finished first in the 200 individual medley in Kutztown’s 105-75 win over Juniata on Friday.
Senior Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of the second place 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 2:04.09 in Ursinus College’s 116-77 win over Lebanon Valley last Saturday. Sophomore Marisa Ferrari (Central Bucks East) placed third in the 50 free with a time of 26.53.
Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:44.94 in Franklin & Marshall’s 137-95 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Sophomore Emily Houser (Upper Dublin) anchored the medley and free relays and placed third in the 200 backstroke and finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in Dickinson’s 139-109 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Friday’s 136-57 win at Bryn Mawr, Houser was the first leg of the winning medley relay. She finished second in the individual medley.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Meiron) recorded 40 assists in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss to Caldwell University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals on Tuesday night. She also finished with 10 digs. She concluded her career fourth on the program’s all-time list with 1,167 assists and fifth all-time with 1,268 digs. She is just one of two players to record 1,000-plus digs and assists in a career. Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) recorded nine kills and 24 digs while freshman Cecilia Weir (William Tennent) had 10 digs.
Franklin & Marshall senior Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) received Centennial Conference honorable mention recognition. The senior outside hitter ranked seventh in the CC in hitting percentage at .288 and sixth in solo blocks (15). She also led the Diplomats in blocks per set at 0.60. Last season, Harvey was named Player of the Year and received honorable mention in 2012 while earning Co-Player of the Year accolades in 2011.
Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) recorded her 1,000th career kill in Connecticut’s 3-2 loss to East Carolina on Sunday afternoon. She finished the match with 12 kills and a team-high 19 digs to secure a double-double and inch closer to the 1,000/1,000 career milestone. In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Temple, Maugle had a career-high 25 digs and 10 kills.
Kutztown junior middle hitter Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) was named to the All-PSAC
first team. It is the second straight year she earned first team honors. Stringer was second in the conference with a career-high .328 hitting percentage. She drove home 282 kills at 2.54 per set and ended her season by notching double-digit kills in 10 of her final 15 matches. Up front, Stringer was team leader and 10th in the PSAC with 95 blocks at 0.86 per set. She recorded a block in 27 of her 30 matches and led the team with 342 points at 3.08 per set. For her career, Stringer has 759 kills and a .288 hitting percentage with 260 total blocks. With 58 career solo blocks as a junior, Stringer jumped in at No. 10 in the KU record books.
WRESTLING
Senior Joe Stolfi (Souderton) posted a 7-2 decision at 285 in Bucknell’s 22-11 loss to No. 14 Pittsburgh last Saturday.
