MEN’S BASKETBALL
East Stroudsburg senior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) has been named the PSAC East Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week after leading ESU to two wins and sole possession of the PSAC East division lead last week. Grant averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 steals as ESU defeated Shippensburg 73-69 and Bloomsburg 99-79. The PW grad is recognized as the PSAC East Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in his career, tied for second most in program history. Grant had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and five steals in ESU’s win at Shippensburg, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half. Against Bloomsburg, Grant had 16 points, six rebounds, a career-high nine assists and three steals. He scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half, then had seven of his nine assists in the second half. He is averaging 13.3 points and 4.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals through the first seven games. He also leads the PSAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8). Grant moved into third at ESU in career points (1,580) and was the fourth-leading active scorer in DII entering the week. Grant is a two-time first team All-PSAC East, two-time first team All-Region and two-time All-America selection. He has been the Warriors’ top scorer in each of his first three seasons in leading ESU to the 2012 and 2014 PSAC championships and three straight NCAA DII tournament appearances.
Freshman Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) scored 12 points in De Sales University’s 86-57 loss to Moravian on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 80-64 win over Penn State-Berks, Burton came off the bench to score eight points.
Josh Johnson (Norristown) shot 8-for-9 from the field for a team-high 16 points in Kutztown’s 92-65 win over Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday. It is the third straight game the sophomore has scored in double figures. Johnson also finished with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in 24 minutes.
Junior Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) came up just one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in Temple’s 76-64 win over Towson on Wednesday.
Junior forward Ryan O’Neil (Central Bucks East) had six points and five rebounds in Moravian’s 85-80 loss to Haverford on Saturday.
Luke Moyer (Souderton) came off the bench to score nine points in Campbell’s 63-38 win over Johnson and Wales on Monday night.
Sophomore Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) scored 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 90-78 win over Wilkes in Saturday’s title game of the First National Community Bank/Monarch Classic hosted by King’s. The Rock North grad was named to the all-tournament team. In Saturday’s 66-42 win over King’s, Goodman had 17 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Ciara Andrews (Cheltenham) scored 10 points in St. Joe’s 65-51 loss to Penn on Tuesday. The loss snapped a nine-game Big 5 winning streak for the Hawks.
Alex Wheatley (Council Rock North) contributed four points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in Princeton’s 85-55 win over Michigan on Tuesday. The Tigers are 9-0 on the season.
Junior Stephanie Knauer (North Pnnn) scored 23 points in Shippensburg’s 94-82 loss to Shepherd on Saturday.
Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton) scored 14 points in Widener’s 76-71 win over Rowan on Saturday. She shot 2-of-4 from long distance and 6-of-13 from the field. The freshman guard recorded three assists and one steal. In Wednesday’s 70-67 loss to Swarthmore, Gallagher contributed 14 points, one assist and seven rebounds.
FIELD HOCKEY
La Salle senior Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. The Academic All-Area team is comprised of 11 players from the 28 area Division I, II and III schools and voted on by the sports information directors at the area institutions. Kempf scored a career-best seven goals this season and was the team’s leading scorer in Atlantic 10 play to earn Atlantic 10 second team recognition. She scored two game-winning goals, including the overtime game winner in the Explorers’ comeback win at Saint Louis and in the Senior Day win over Bryant. Kempf concluded her La Salle career with 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. Kempf is an academic standout as well. She holds a 3.80 GPA in the five-year speech pathology program and also earned Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference recognition this season.
FOOTBALL
Lycoming senior running back Craig Needhammer (North Penn) repeated on the D3football.com All-East Region team, earning second team honors after a record-breaking season. The North Penn grad, a physics major that was named a Second Team Capital One Academic All-American last week, is only the fifth Warrior to earn repeat all-region honors since the D3football.com program began in 2005. Needhammer finished third in the MAC with 1,242 rushing yards and second with 13 touchdowns. His 186.7 all-purpose yards per game led the conference and are sixth nationally. He posted the first two 300-all-purpose-yard games in program history as a senior, earning USA College Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after his effort against Misericordia and then earning D3football.com Team of the Week accolades and USA College Football Running Back of the Week accolades after his 339-yard effort against FDU-Florham. The team captain rushed for a school record 299 yards in his last game at FDU-Florham, breaking Josh Kleinfelter’s record of 3,664 career rushing yards with his final rush – a 50-yard touchdown run that made it a 45-27 game – giving him 3,713 career yards. Needhammer finished his career with a school record 42 touchdowns, 39 rushing touchdowns and 5,291 all-purpose yards. He set single season records for rushing touchdowns (13), all-purpose yards (1,867) and kick return yards (482). He also set the single game all-purpose yardage record of 339 yards. Needhammer also was named to the Academic All-Middle Atlantic Conference squad.
West Chester center Derek Schatz (Council Rock South), place kicker/punter Rich Bruno(Council Rock South) and junior defensive lineman Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team. The 2014 Academic All-Area football team includes players from seven different schools.
Bruno is the only player returning to the list after earning Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Performer of the Year honors in 2013 by finishing with a 3.87 GPA. He carried a 3.90 GPA into this fall while majoring in Exercise Science. During his career at West Chester, Bruno became the trick of all kicking trades. He was responsible for kickoffs, punts and field goals at some point during his four-year career. In his last season as a Golden Ram, he averaged 37.94 yards per punt with a long of
64 with 20 of his punts landing inside the 20-yard line. He made 9-of-16 field goals, including one from 45 yards out in his longest attempt of the year. He also averaged 55.6 yards on kickoffs with 11 touchbacks while winning the school’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award. He opened as a shining star last year as his punting yardage increased, averaging 39.9 yards and with his career longest 74-yard punt and 15 of them landing close to the opponent’s end zone. Bruno also shared time at the kickoff position with Shawn Leo, accumulating 2,370 yards, 59.2 yards per kickoff with four touchbacks. In his sophomore year, he would assume the role of primary punter, averaging 36.6 yards per punt and adding a long punt of 59 yards and 10 punts that landed behind the 20-yard line of opponents, earning All-PSAC East honors. On Dec. 6, the senior punter was named the overall special teams most valuable player of the Fifth Annual National Bowl Game that took place at Alfonso Stadium on the campus of Florida International University. A total of 40 scouts, including 11 from NFL teams and five from CFL clubs, watched the Blue Nation defeat the Red Nation 17-14. Bruno punted for the Red Nation.
Derek Schatz finished with a 3.27 GPA while majoring in Computer Science. This season, he was a preseason All-America by Lindys Sports and USA Football. He was the starting center for his last three seasons. In 2013, the center started in all 15 games, grabbing a first team All-PSAC honors. He was also named second team All-Super Region I. In 2012, he was a part of a talented line for 11 games that helped star running back Rondell White break the school’s single-season rushing record of 1,548 and helped West Chester to the fourth ranked rushing offense in the conference as well as fifth in total offense. The three-year letterwinner has, with his strength and talent off the ball, been a tremendous force in protecting his quarterback, allowing a balanced running attack to flourish.
Cohen majors in Physical Education and ended last spring with a 3.08 GPA. The defensive lineman will return next season with an experienced line that loses only one key starter to graduation. On the field, the three-year letterman had 65 tackles and led the defense with 20 tackles for a loss. He recorded 11 sacks for 65 yards lost while registering eight quarterback hurries. As a sophomore, the defensive end played in all 15 games, registering 41 tackles, four pass break-ups, four quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. In his rookie season, the defensive end played in all 11 games, registering 33 tackles, leading the team with 7.5 for a loss. He also contributed with a fumble recovery, taking it four yards for his first and only touchdown of his career.
Millersville linebacker Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) was named the National Bowl’s Defensive MVP. The Bensalem was one of 10 PSAC football players to compete in the game, which features the top seniors from non-Division I football schools. It is the only all-star game that focuses on Division II and Division III players, giving players the opportunity to showcase their ability in front of professional scouts from all levels from the NFL to arena leagues. Head coach for Slaton’s Red Nation team was Kevin O’Hanlon of the Trenton Freedom. Slaton was an All-PSAC East Second Team selection at linebacker after leading Millersville and ranking second in the PSAC in tackles with 104.
MEN’S SOCCER
La Salle junior Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) has been named to the Midwest All-Region third Team for the third straight season, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Wednesday. Farrell paced the Explorers in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18) this season and finished in the top ten in the Atlantic 10 in goals and points. The Wissahickon grad started 18 games for the Blue and Gold this season, and he scored game-winning goals in 1-0 wins over Saint Joseph’s and Bucknell. Farrell also assisted game-winning goals in victories over Stetson and Manhattan. The Explorers qualified for their fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 tournament appearance in November, falling to Saint Louis in the opening round.
West Chester senior Christian Benner (Souderton) was named to the NSCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region second team. The Souderton grad started all 16 games. He played stellar defense throughout the year and scored a goal in the Shippensburg game that made all the difference in a 2-1 win. His versatility proved crucial in the early part of the season when the team was battling injuries. Benner played a number of different roles in the back. He appeared in 69 career games. He scored five goals and assisted on two others to post 12 points in his career.
West Chester freshman forward Alex Lean (Council Rock North) was named to the NSCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region third team. The Rock North alum played in all 17 games, starting 15 in his first collegiate season. The PSAC Freshman of the Year put an outstanding season together, finishing first on the team in assists (4), second on the team in points (12) and third in goals (4) to show much promise for years to come.
Bloomsburg’s Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West) and Matt Zima (Council Rock North) both received All-Atlantic Region third team honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Bamford and Zima
were both key members of a Huskies back line that allowed only 16 goals during the regular season. Bamford, a junior, led the team with six assists – a mark that ranks 10th in Huskies’ season history. He also was named second team All-PSAC. Zima, also a junior, recently received first team All-PSAC, first team Daktronics All-Region and honorable mention Daktronics All-America honors as well. Zima tallied four goals with two assists for a total of 10 points during the season.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Gettysburg senior Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) is ranked ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:39.59) and 17th in the 100 freestyle (45.42) in the most recent national rankings for Division III.
Delaware senior Tim Ware (Central Bucks South) finished seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.29 at the 2014 USA Swimming Long Course Time Trials last Sunday.
Rider sophomore Ian Flynn (Upper Dublin) was 15th in the 100 free with a time of 46.47 at the Brown Invitational last weekend.
Andrew Richey (William Tennent) was part of IUP’s 400 free relay that posted a record-breaking time of 3:04.00 at the Zippy Invitational at Ohio University last Sunday.
Penn State sophomore Bob Bantley (Upper Dublin) finished 15th in the 100 free at the Georgia Fall Invite last Sunday. He was part of the 13th place 400 free realy that posted a season best 2:57.74. Penn State finished fifth out of the eight-team field.
Shippensburg senior RJ Phiambolis (Pennridge) had a PR of 48.29 in the 100 freestyle and finished 18th at Ithaca College’s Bomber Invitational last weekend. He was part of the 40 free relay that finished fourth with a time of 3:11.70.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Marist freshman Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) received the Corvias Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division I Metro/Upstate Diver of the Week award for the week ending Dec. 8. Berardelli earned the award shortly after being named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Diver of the Week. At the H2ounds Invitational, Berardelli’s top two finishes in both diving events led the Red Foxes to one-sided victories over MAAC foes Iona (247-117) and Saint Peter’s (250-110). She finished second in the 1-meter dive with 223.00 points Dec. 5 and claimed the top spot in the 3-meter event, scoring 272.55 points the following day. Berardelli also took first place in the 3-meter dive in Marist’s 177-115 win over Fairfield on Nov. 8. The Red Foxes remain unbeaten against MAAC squads this season and have an overall record of 5-2.
Brown senior Kate Dillione (Council Rock North) finished second in the 100 free at the Brown Classic last weekend.
Freshman Tommie Dillione (Council Rock North) was part of Penn State’s 14th place relay that posted a time of 3:23.22 at the Georgia Fall Invite last weekend. Penn State finished fifth as a team.
Shippensburg junior Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) finished eighth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.41 at Ithaca’s Bomber Invite last weekend. She also was part of the third place 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:34.37, just four-tenths of a second off the season best. Meier claimed third place in the 200 freestyle. Overall, Shippensburg finished fourth out of nine teams.

Johns Hopkins senior Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 13.38m (43-10.75) at the Bow-tie Track Classic on the campus of Ursinus College last weekend.
