MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Damien Washington (Upper Moreland) finished with a team-high 22 points and added nine rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal in Delaware Valley University’s 86-44 win over Bryn Athyn in a non-conference game on Wednesday.
Will Derr (Upper Dublin) hauled in seven rebounds off the bench in Arcadia’s 63-58 win over Stevenson last Saturday.
Junior Tracy Simsick (Souderton) scored a team-high 22 points and added five rebounds and five assists in DeSales University’s 76-67 win over Muhlenberg on Tuesday.
Senior guard Jimmy Murray (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 23 points, two assists and two steals in Moravian’s 99-94 loss to Yeshiva (N.Y.) University on Wednesday.
Senior Riley Thompson (Council Rock North) connected on 7-of-11 shots for 17 points in Ithaca’s 85-70 upset over No. 13 University of Rochester.
Freshman Jack Clark (Cheltenham) scored 11 points off the bench to go along with six rebounds in La Salle’s 57-51 win over Towson to capture the Boardwalk Battle title in Atlantic City on Saturday. In Friday’s 80-57 win over Alabama A&M to advance to the championship game of the Boardwalk Battle, Clark came off the bench to provide a spark, tallying nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Included in Clark’s nine points was a transition dunk that bumped the margin to 40-22 right before intermission.
Freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Cheltenham) contributed nine points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in Chestnut Hill College’s 80-68 loss to Georgian Court on Thursday. In last Saturday’s 59-56 win over Assumption College, Pitts scored 12 points and also had six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Shaw junior Amir Hinton (Abington) was named the CIAA Player of the Week for the fourth week of the 2018-19 season. Hinton scored 49 points to lead Shaw to a 95-90 overtime win over nationally-ranked Barton. Hinton not only leads the CIAA in scoring but also is the nation’s leading scorer for DII, averaging 33.6 points per game. The award is Hinton’s second of the season.
Hinton registered a new career high with 52 points, setting a new program record, in Shaw’s 115-98 loss to Tampa University on Wednesday. Hinton connected on 18-of-32 shots from the floor and buried 13-of-16 foul shots to go along with seven assists, four rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes of action. In Tuesday’s 88-82 loss to Eckerd, Hinton scored 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting to go along with six assists. In Shaw’s 95-92 overtime loss at Elizabeth City, Hinton scored 27 of his 31 points in the second half. He connected on 12-of-15 at the free throw line and also had six rebounds and seven assists.
Kutztown University redshirt senior Anthony Lee (Abington) earned his second consecutive PSAC East Athlete
of the Week honors for the week ending Dec. 9. Lee became the first player in Division II this season to hit the half century mark in points in a game in a 109-97 setback at Pitt-Johnstown. There are just two players across all three NCAA divisions to have hit the mark this season. He is just the 16th player in PSAC history to score 50 and is the first in the PSAC since 2004 and only the second since 1994. In 39 minutes of action against the Mountain Cats, Lee connected on 15 field goals (four shy of the school record of 19), including five three-pointers. He also went 15-for-16 from the free throw line and added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Lee drained a game-winning three-pointer at the end of regulation to propel Kutztown to a 59-56 win over Gannon University on Wednesday night. Lee netted a game-high 28 points and also grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. In Tuesday’s 110-80 loss to Mercyhurst, Lee, who entered second in D-II at 28.4 points per game, led all scorers with 26 points. It was his 40th consecutive game in double figures. He was 4-of-5 from three-point range and 12-of-13 from the free throw line. In last Saturday’s 100-86 win over Wilmington University, Lee scored 26 points and also had six rebounds and seven assists.
Senior Matt Penecale (Abington) had 15 points and a season-high eight rebounds in West Chester’s 92-61 win over Seton Hill on Wednesday. In Tuesday’s 80-75 loss to No. 3 IUP, Penecale had 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Freshman Ish Horn (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a season-high nine points in 15 minutes off the bench in East Stroudsburg’s 99-86 road victory at California (Pa.) on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Bridget Birkhead (Central Bucks East) continued her hot shooting, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc to set new career highs in points (15) and three-pointers (5) in Mount St. Mary’s 86-73 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday. In last Sunday’s 83-51 loss to Virginia Tech, Birkhead knocked down a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11 points.
Junior forward Makenzie Mason (Central Bucks West) was named the University of Scranton Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 16. It is the second time in her career she has received this honor. In three wins, Mason averaged 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. In
Scranton’s 89-46 win over York, Mason scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting as the Lady Royals set a new program record by converting on 66 percent of their field goals. She also dished out five assists to go along with one block and one rebound. She followed that with a strong effort in Scranton’s 65-53 win over nationally-ranked Ithaca, finishing just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. She also racked up five assists, two steals and one blocked shot. In Scranton’s 62-52 win over Capital, Mason had six points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. To that point in the season, Mason averaged 13.3 points per game while leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per contest. Her 18 blocks are the most on the squad, and she ranks second on the team with 29 assists and eight steals. Mason’s 2.0 blocks per game average is second best in the Landmark Conference while her 57.0 field goal percentage ranks third in the league. She also ranks in the top 10 in the conference in points, rebounds and assists per game.
Mason matched a career high with 24 points, leading the University of Scranton to a 66-45 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday. The CB West graduate shot 10-of-14 from the floor and also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked three shots. With the win, the sixth-ranked Lady Royals moved to 10-0 on the year and extended their regular season non-conference winning streak to 42 games.
Taylor Dunn (Central Bucks South) had 13 points and three steals in Arcadia’s 69-65 overtime loss to Earlham on Friday in its final game at the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In Thursday’s 77-72 double overtime loss to Coe at the Cruzin Classic, Dunn, who finished with 20 points on the day, hit a game-tying three with 28 seconds left in regulation and added a game-tying triple with 10 seconds left in the first overtime. In last Saturday’s 58-52 win over Stevenson, Dunn had 17 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Jefferson Universtiy senior Erin Maher (North Penn) was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 16. The North Penn graduate grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end, and blocked two shots to go along with her eight points versus Bloomsburg. She helped Jefferson limit the Huskies to just 27.3 percent shooting (9-of-33) in the second half.
Junior Alynna Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a game-high 22 points and also had five rebounds, four steals and two assists in No. 13/19 Jefferson University’s 68-58 win over Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday. It was her second 20-point output of the year. Maher was a factor defensively, pulling down seven rebounds and blocking two shots. In last Saturday’s 56-45 win over Bloomsburg, Williams contributed 13 points while Maher was a force on the glass, grabbing 13 boards to go along with her eight points and two blocks.
Widener juniorDevan Rimmer (Pennridge) was named the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 9. It is the first time this season she received the honor. Rimmer averaged 23.5 points and
5.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week in MAC Commonwealth play. She opened the week with 23 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in a win over Albright. The junior followed that with a season-high 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists in a win over Hood. Rimmer scored 11 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter. It was the third game in a row and fourth of the last five she eclipsed 20 points.
Rimmer scored 10 points in the opening quarter and finished with 18 points in Widener’s 68-51 win over Sage College in the final game of the Cruzin’ Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Friday. The Pennridge graduate shot 50 percent from the field. She also had five rebounds. In Thursday’s 82-65 win over Curry College in the Cruzin’ Classic. Rimmer led the Pride with 24 points on 56 percent shooting. Emma Gardy (Central Bucks South) had seven points and three rebounds. In last Saturday’s 66-65 loss to Lycoming, Rimmer had 19 points and two steals. In Widener’s 76-65 victory over Swarthmore, Rimmer scored 21 points, scoring 20-plus points for the fourth straight game and fifth time in six games.
Taylor Thames (North Penn) contributed 11 points, four rebounds and four assists in Kutztown’s 74-70 loss at Mercyhurst on Tuesday. Gabbi Wright (Cheltenham) added four points and five rebounds.
FIELD HOCKEY
West Chester senior goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo (North Penn) was named to the All-ECAC Division II first
team and also earned 2018 Philly SIDA Academic All-Area honors. The North Penn graduate, the PSAC Champion Scholar for her work in the classroom, posted a record of 17-3 with a goals-against average of 0.99 in backstopping the Golden Rams to the national semifinals in her senior season. Elizardo registered a conference-best seven shutouts.
Elizardo is majoring in Middle Grades Preparation with minors in Mathematics and Psychology with an impressive 3.98 GPA as she enters her final semester. This is the second academic honor of the year for Elizardo, who also earned PSAC Field Hockey Champion Scholar honors during the PSAC tournament.
FOOTBALL
Widener junior Andrew Thomas (North Penn) was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-American second team by the College Sports Information Directors Association of America. A member of the Inquirer Academic All-Area team, Thomas was second team All-MAC after receiving first team honors in 2017. He started seven games this year and 18 in a row at right tackle before suffering a season-ending injury. The senior engineering major has a 3.91 GPA and was named Academic All-MAC last season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Washington and Lee senior midfielder Megan Engeland (Pennsbury) was named to the
2018 College Division All-State Women’s Soccer first team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Engeland concluded her career in the Blue and White with 10 goals and seven assists for a 27-point senior campaign. Her 10 goals ranked fifth in the ODAC and her seven assists were good for fourth in the conference as she led the Generals in both categories. Engeland tallied at least one point in all but two games for Washington and Lee with nine multi-point efforts. She scored a season-high six points in Washington and Lee’s 4-2 win at Shenandoah, tallying her second career hat trick. This is Engeland’s third career appearance on an all-state team, each coming over the last three seasons.
MEN’S SWIMMING
IUP freshman Ryan Hartmann (North Penn) posted a PSAC qualifying time in the 50 free (22.66) and 200 IM (1:59.41) at the IUP Winter Invite on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Arcadia junior Rachel Samson (Council Rock North) was named the MAC Swimmer of the week for the week ending Dec. 9. The CR North graduate paced the Knights in a dual meet win over Wilkes, finishing first in three events. Samson was first in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:01.65. She also was the first in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:11.47, and the 200 backstroke (2:15.92). all three of her times are ranked in the top nine in the conference.
WRESTLING
No. 1 ranked Jeff Reimel (North Penn) notched a major decision (10-0) at 197 in No. 16 Kutztown’s 26-16 non-conference win over No. 19 LIU Post last Saturday.
