MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Tim Abruzzo (Pennridge) returned to the court for the United States Naval Academy men’s basketball team after being sidelined for nearly 20 months with a torn ACL. In his first game action against Goucher on Nov. 22, Abruzzo scored nine points in 70 seconds on three straight possessions. Navy’s lead grew from 11 to 20. Three days later against UMBC, Abruzzo came off the bench to provide lift and help send Navy to its third straight win. In Navy’s 65-59 win at Penn on Wednesday night, Abruzzo scored 11 points. The win was the seventh straight for Navy.
Villanova senior guard Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) was nominated for the 2016 Allstate NABC and
WBCA Good Works Teams. This distinguished award shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to service in their communities. The nominees were submitted by sports information directors and college basketball coaches from across the country. From the nominations, special voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Arcidiacono scored 17 points, including a three-pointer to halt a 12-2 St. Joseph’s run that had narrowed Villanova’s lead to 54-49 with 14:05 left to play. The Wildcats went on to earn an 86-72 win before a sold-out crowd of 4200 at Hagan Arena.
Ryan Connolly (Souderton) had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists while freshman Anthony Lee
(Abington) had 14 points, three rebounds and a steal in Kutztown’s 78-76 win over IUP on Saturday. In Friday’s 90-84 overtime win over Pitt-Johnstown, Lee received the nod at guard and was a focal point of KU's offense as he scored a career-high 21 points on 75 percent shooting. Nine of his points came from beyond the arc, which was also a career high. He also was big on the glass as he hauled in a career-high 10 boards for his first double-double. Josh Johnson (Norristown) had a season-high 25 points and 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Connolly finished with seven rebounds and nine points on three three-pointers. In Tuesday’s 69-60 road win at Millersville, Connolly scored 12 points while Johnson led the team with seven rebounds and 11 points. He opened the game with his first career three-pointer.
Matt Penecale (Abington) recorded 13 points and four assists in West Chester’s 69-66 loss to Edinboro on Saturday. On Tuesday, Penecale posted eight assists in West Chester’s 83-68 win over Shippensburg.
Senior Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in Temple’s 76-60 loss at Wisconsin on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 79-70 win over Fairleigh Dickinson, Bond scored 18 points, connecting on 8-of-11 shots from the field.
Senior Evan Ward (Central Bucks West) scored a season-high 18 points in Albright’s 89-72 loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 63-56 win over Hood, Ward scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
Senior Julian Hyden (Bensalem) scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 77-69 win over Centenary College on Saturday. Aaron Morgan (Council Rock North) would reach double digits in the first half, going 2-for-3 from behind the arc for 12 points. He finished with 16 points. In Wednesday’s 102-92 win over defending conference champion Neumann, Hyden, who was 4-for-5 from behind the arc, scored 20 points while Morgan had 19.
Freshman guard Jimmy Murray (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 11 points in Moravian’s 96-79 loss to No. 22 The Catholic University of America on Saturday.
Freshman Evan Slone (Souderton) scored six points in Arcadia’s 73-68 win over Messiah on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 83-74 loss to Lebanon Valley, Slone had nine points.
Sophomore Steven Ciotti (Pennsbury) had a career-high eight points off the bench in DeSales University’s 79-64 loss to Misericorida on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 75-70 win over Manhattanvile, sophomore Aaron Burton (Cheltenham) scored 11 points.
Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) had nine rebounds to tie for game high honors and also had a career-best three blocked shots in Washington College’s 75-50 loss to No. 20 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Wes Brooks (North Penn) had a team-high 18 points to go along with four steals in McDaniel’s 62-56 loss to Swarthmore on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 54-52 win over Johns Hopkins, Brooks had 12 points.
Junior Ryan Charity (Pennsbury) connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe while tallying 11 points in Cabrini’s 91-74 win over Marywood on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 84-64 loss to Immaculata, Charity led Cabrini with a career high 17 points in just 16 minutes of action. The junior connected on all five of his field goal attempts, including a pair of three pointers and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) converted a three-point play with eight seconds remaining to lift St. Joseph’s to a 63-62 win at Lehigh on Wednesday afternoon. With time running out, Andrews got the ball on the left wing and drove to the hoop, drawing contact and making the basket to tie the game 62-62. She calmly converted the free throw to give the Hawks the lead. Andrews finished with 12 points – five in the final minute of the game. In last Sunday’s 70-67 comeback victory at Temple, Andrews finished the day with a career-best 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 11-of-13 free throws.
Senior Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) contributed 15 points, three rebounds and three blocks in Princeton’s 74-57 win over previously unbeaten Michigan on Sunday.
Freshman Nicole Munger (Central Bucks West) had nine points and three rebounds in Thursday’s 82-45 win over Pitt.
Junior Lauren Crisler (North Penn) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds in American University’s 47-46 loss at UMBC on Wednesday. In last Sunday’s 71-70 loss to Wake Forest, Crisler scored a career-high 18 points.
Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) had 10 rebounds in Alvernia’s 63-48 loss to Lycoming on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown) had a team-high seven rebounds off the bench while Taylor Thames (North Penn) contributed four points, two assists and two steals off the bench in Kutztown’s 80-74 loss to IUP on Saturday. In Friday’s 88-65 win over Pitt-Johnstown, Ferguson had eight points and a career-high eight rebounds while Thames had six points.

Emily O’Donnell (Williams Tennent) posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in Albright’s 79-48 win over Hood on Wednesday. Alysha Lofton (Central Bucks South) scored seven points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out seven assists and had three steals. Albright improved to 6-0 on the season, topping the previous school record of 5-0 set by the 2007-08 team.
Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) led all players with 23 points, which included six three-pointers, in Cairn University’s 66-35 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday.
Monet McGorda (Cheltenham) had five rebounds in Gwynedd Mercy’s 93-40 win over Summit on Wednesday.
Junior guard Rachel Falkowski (Central Bucks South) had six points and six rebounds in East Stroudsburg’s 74-67 loss to Edinboro on Friday. In Tuesday’s 73-52 loss to Bloomsburg, Falkowski had four points and six rebounds.
Freshman Regie Robinson (Upper Merion) scored 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting in Eastern University’s 68-58 home win over Delaware Valley University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 49-28 win at Wilkes University, Robinson scored 15 points and pulled down a career high 16 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double.
FIELD HOCKEY
Muhlenberg sophomore goalie Emma Rosenthal (Central Bucks East) was selected to the National Field
Hockey Coaches Association’s All-South Region second team. Rosenthal had a breakout season after playing only a handful of minutes in goal as a freshman. She started 15 games, including all 10 CC contests, and was second in the league and 20th in Division III with a 1.14 goals-against average. She recorded four shutouts in CC action and made a career-high 10 saves against nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall. The first Muhlenberg goalie ever chosen to the all-region team and a second team All-CC selection, Rosenthal was named CC Player of the Week after stopping five shots in a shutout of Johns Hopkins.
Quinnipiac senior Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region Team. The honor is the first for McCullough, who also was a first team All-MAAC pick. The PW graduate finished the year as the Bobcats’ leading scorer, posting 20 points on the strength of a team-high 12 assists to go along with four goals. McCullough led Quinnipiac in a 4-0 win against MAAC foe Bryant with a goal and two assists for a season-high four points. It also marked the first game of a four-game scoring streak that featured a goal and seven assists. She had a pair of assists in a come-from-behind win against Sacred Heart, including the assist on the game winner before following with a two-assist day in a 4-2 win against Siena. Against Fairfield, she set up the game-tying goal before the Bobcats completed the comeback in a 5-4 overtime win.
FOOTBALL
Shippensburg senior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) was named to the 2015 Division II Conference
Commissioners Association (CCA) All-Super Region 1 Team. Mayer was recognized as a first team return specialist, putting him in consideration for All-America honors. It is his first All-Region selection. He had a historic season returning punts, setting school records by leading all of Division II in punt return average (22.3 yards per return) and punt return touchdowns (three). The Norristown native became the first SU player to return two punts for touchdowns in a game when he did so against Millersville on Oct. 31. His 177 punt return yards against the Marauders is a Division II single-game best this season. Mayer won PSAC East Special Teams Player of the Week twice – once for his performance against Millersville and also after week three when he returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown at California (Pa.). Mayer received first team All-PSAC Eastern Division honors at both wide receiver and also as a return specialist.
West Chester senior defensive end Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) was named to the D2
Commissioner’s Conference Association (CCA) All-Super Region I first team. It was Cohen’s first appearance on the all-region squad. He tied for the most votes in the region with fellow first team selection Marcus Martin from Slippery Rock. Each of the first team selections will now be placed on the All-America ballot. The D2CCA All-America team will be announced on Dec. 13. Cohen, who was also named the PSAC Eastern Division defensive player of the year and was a national finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award, broke the conference record for career sacks with 33.5. He notched 13.5 sacks this past fall to lead the conference and rank fifth nationally. He also led the PSAC in tackles for a loss with 20. That number ranked 17th nationally as well. He is a three-time All-PSAC East selection and a two-time first team pick.
MEN’S SOCCER
Bloomsburg redshirt sophomore forward Austin Transue (Neshaminy) and senior defender Matt Zima (Council Rock North) were named Second Team All-Atlantic Region selections by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association (CCA). Both Transue and Zima earned All-PSAC first team honors.
Transure put together one of the finest seasons in program history, finishing the season with 13 goals and four assists for 30 points. His 13 goals marked the ninth-highest single-season goal total in the Bloomsburg record books. He finished second in the PSAC in goals (13) and points (30), trailing only the PSAC Athlete of the Year – Millersville’s Jaime Vaquez – in both categories. He also finished second in the PSAC with seven game-winning goals.
Zima, who became the first two-time All-Region honoree in program history, recorded one assist on the season. His only helper came during a 2-0 victory over Lock Haven on Sept. 15. He anchored a defensive unit that allowed only 21 goals in 19 games with seven shutouts, during the 2015 campaign. Last season, Zima became the first All-American in program history after earning honorable mention accolades from then-Daktronics. He was also a National Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Atlantic Region Third Team selection, and an All-PSAC First Team member a year ago.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Penn State defeated Duke University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon en route to its first ever National Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Nittany Lions tallied their eighth straight shutout and 15th overall on the season. Penn State posted a scoring margin of 20-0 in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. It is the first ever Big Ten team to win the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. Sophomore Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) scored six game-winning goals for the Nittany Lions in 2015, which ranks tied for eighth in a single season. Freshman Marisa Sheva (Pennridge) is also a member of the national championship squad.
Virginia Wesleyan sophomore Zoe Traficante (Central Bucks West) earned All-South Atlantic Region Third
Team honors it was announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It was Traficante’s first all-region honor, joining her first all-conference accolade when she received First Team All-ODAC last month. Traficante was instrumental in the central midfield, scoring two goals with a pair of assists. Both of her goals were game winners as she scored the decider against Hollins and Randolph. The women’s soccer team finished the year 11-10 with an 8-3 mark in conference play, advancing to the ODAC semifinals.
Cedarville junior Grace Miorelli (Souderton) was recently named to the NSCAA Division II Midwest Region Second Team She also was named to the Conference Commissioners Association Midwest Region Second Team for the third consecutive year. She was a first team choice in both 2013 and 2014. The junior midfielder ranked second on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 11 assists for 33 points for a Cedarville squad that won the G-MAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
Elizabethtown senior Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) earned NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team Honors. Despite missing three games toward the end of the regular season, Cerankowski was still Elizabethtown’s most potent offensive weapon. The team leader in goals, assists and points, Cerankowski put up seven goals, including tallies in four straight games to end the month of September. It was the third time in four years the Neshaminy grad had at least seven goals. Cerankowski also was a distributor, ending the season with five assists. She had a single-game career best three assists in a 3-1 win over Moravian. The selection marks her second appearance on the All-Mid-Atlantic Third Team in as many seasons.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Arcadia sophomore Jacob Schellinger (North Penn) was part of the seventh place 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:21.11 at the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference Winter Championships this weekend. He also was part of the sixth place 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:31.39. Schellinger finished 19th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.63, and he was a member of he 200 medley relay that finished sixth with a program-record time of 1:40.38.
Bloomsburg freshman Henry Mackensen (Central Bucks South) finished 10th in 1:56.20 in the 200 butterfly at the 2015 Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron this weekend. Bobby Lenahan (Hatboro-Horsham) was 16th in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.10.
Junior Ian Flynn (Upper Dublin) was part of Rider’s 200 free relay ‘A’ team that finished sixth with a time of 1:22.67 at the Big Al Open hosted by Princeton University this weekend.
Junior Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) was runner-up in the 200 freestyle and Maxwell Coulter (Pennridge) finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in Ursinus College’s 132-129 win over Gettysburg on Nov. 21.
La Salle senior CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) finished eighth in the three-meter event with 431.75 points at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational this weekend.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Rachel Engelhardt (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the 400 medley relay that posted a season-best 4:26.39 in Elizabethtown’s 131-66 loss to Scranton on Saturday. In Wednesday’s double dual at Bryn Mawr, Engelhardt was part of the winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:48.95. Elizabethtown defeated Cabrini 131-69 but fell to Bryn Mawr 114-91.
Bloomsburg senior Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) finished 16th in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.06 at the 2015 Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron. She was part of the 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:44.84 and finished sixth. That time is number one in the PSAC this season and number two in all-time school history. Wheatley finished 23rd in the 50 free with a time of 24.90. Lina Brouse (Upper Dublin) finished 22nd in the 100 breaststroke.
Lebanon Valley senior Jan Ikeda (North Penn) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference’s Swimmer of the
Week as well as the Corvias ECAC Division III South Swimmer of the Week for the week ending Nov. 30. Ikeda earned the honors thanks to a pair of singles victories against Elizabethtown. The senior captain picked up the first win of the night for the Dutchmen when she won the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.53. She followed it up with a win in the 100 free, swimming a time of 59 seconds flat.
Ikeda won the 100 fly in impressive fashion in Lebanon Valley’s 129-76 win over Stevenson on Saturday. Her time of 1:08.32 was nearly 10 seconds faster than the runner-up from Stevenson. She also was part of the winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:58.39.
Marist sophomore Megan Berardelli (Wissahickon) finished fourth in the 1-meter board with 239.99 points at the H2ounds Invitational on Friday.
Franklin & Marshall’s Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) placed 12th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:20.72 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday. The Diplomats collected 526 points to finish second only to Washington & Lee. Mateja was part of the 200 free relay that clocked a time of 1:42.11 and took sixth place.
Pitt junior Rachel Saunders (Central Bucks West) finished second in the 1-meter competition with 257.50 points at the Big Al Invite on Saturday.
Senior Sarah Richards (Central Bucks East) was part of The College of New Jersey’s winning 800 free relay that posted a time of 8:05.34 on day two of the Lions Invitational on Saturday. On Friday, Richards set a season best time of 5:23.72 in the 500 free, dropping over 30 seconds from her seed time to place fifth overall.
Shippensburg senior Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) made her season debut in the 200 individual medley and swam a PSAC qualifying time of 2:12.25 at the 2015 Bomber Invitational at Ithaca College. Sophomore Nicole Martorella (Norristown) turned in a PSAC qualifying time of 2:17.09. Martorella improved her No. 2 ranking on SU’s all-time list for 100 breaststroke, finishing fourth and improving her personal best to 1:05.90. She also notched a PSAC qualifier in the 400 IM (4:48.91). Meier tried her hand in the 100 back and posted a PSAC qualifying time of 1:01.21. She also was part of the sixth place 200 free relay that finished with a time of 1:39.65.
La Salle sophomore Sydney Szopo (Upper Moreland) finished in ninth place with a total of 346.35 points in the one-meter diving event on the final day of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational this weekend. She also finished 10th in the three-meter event with 360.35 points. Freshman Shannon Battis (William Tennent) finished in eighth place in the 1650 free with a time of 18:10.04, and she was 17th with a time of 5:16.75 in the 500 free. Freshman Olivia DiStefano (North Penn) finished second out of 56 entries in the 100 back with a time of 57.75, and she posted a time of 52.84 in the 100 free. DiStefano was the first of seven La Salle swimmers entered in the 50 free to touch with the wall with a time of 23.97 for fourth place. La Salle finished second as a team.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Penn sophomore Jeff Wiseman (Council Rock South) won the 500 meter crown with a time of 1:06.27 at the Lehigh Invitational this weekend.
WRESTLING
Elizabethtown’s Philip Torresani (Hatboro-Horsham) placed fifth at 125 at Saturday’s New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College. Torresani advanced all the way to the semifinals where he hung tough against Bobby Jordan of Johnson & Wales. Jordan, ranked sixth in the country by the NWCA and seventh by d3wrestle.com, hung on for a 4-2 decision, knocking Torresani into the consolation bracket. The sophomore took on yet another ranked wrestler in the consolation semifinals and came up two points shy of moving on with a 6-4 loss to No. 4/9 (NWCA/d3wrestle) James Kaishian (Ithaca). In his fifth place match, Torresani responded with a 5-3 win over sixth seed Ferdinand Mase (Ithaca), his second win of the day over Mase.
Kutztown senior Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) competed in a championship match against Division I competition at the PSAC Championships at Mercyhurst University. At 157 points, Martoccio won his first three matches by decision. The second-ranked 157-pounder in Division II, Martoccio met Division I Lock Haven’s Aaron Mckinney in the championship match and dropped an 8-3 decision. The CR South graduate earned All-PSAC honors for the second time in his career with a career-best second place finish. The returning All-American is 10-2 on the year, 10-0 against Division II competition.
