BASEBALL
Monmouth baseball freshman infielder Danny Long (Pennridge) was named MAAC Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. Long was a single away from the cycle at Florida Atlantic University, knocking a three-run homer for the first long ball of his career in addition to a double down the line and a triple off the top of the wall, narrowly missing his second home run of the day. He was the first Monmouth freshman to start on opening day in seven years and finished the weekend slugging .900 with a run scored, three RBIs and a perfect three games at shortstop.
Justin Andrews (Neshaminy) threw three scoreless innings in relief in Monmouth’s 4-2 win over Furman on Friday. He allowed two hits. Ricky Dennis (Central Bucks South) earned his first win of the year after six effective innings on the mound. He allowed two runs on five hits while fanning three. In last Sunday’s 12-10 loss to FAU, Andrews delivered three shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Long had three extra base hits, finishing a single shy of the cycle.
Junior Connor Laigiae (Council Rock South) picked up the win in Arcadia’s 4-3 win over Swarthmore on Saturday after getting the final out of the sixth inning in relief. Sophomore Nick Ponente (Council Rock South) was 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs.
Sophomore Brett Guaglionona (Abington) singled and drove in the Nittany Lions’ only run in Penn State Abington’s 13-1 loss to Stockton on Friday. In last Sunday’s 18-4 loss to Rutgers-Newark, junior Matt Meyers (Cheltenham) had three hits and scored two runs. Trey Guaglionona (Abington) singled in two runs.
Anthony Rigous (Council Rock North) had two hits in IUP’s 8-7 win over the Apprentice School on Sunday on the final day of the Builder Invitational in Hampton, Va.
Freshman Blake Gular (Souderton) was 3-for-4 with his first collegiate home run, two runs scored and two RBIs in Bloomsburg’s 17-11 win over Kutztown on Saturday. Cole Swiger (Upper Dublin) hit a two-run double.
Sophomore Dylan Morrissette (Souderton) notched the first two hits of is collegiate career, which included doubling into the power alley in left and driving in a pair of runs, in Widener’s 21-13 win over Scranton on Sunday afternoon. In Saturday’s 4-2 win over Washington College in game one of a doubleheader sweep, senior Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) reached over the center field fence to make an acrobatic catch, taking a potential home run away. In Widener’s 8-3 win in game two of the twinbill, McDonough contributed a two-run double.
Ryan Clow (Central Bucks East) picked up the win in Kutztown’s 16-15 win over Bloomsburg on Sunday at the Builder Invitational, allowing two hits and one run (unearned) in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out five. Zach Schram (Council Rock North) was 1-for-1 with an RBI and run scored. In Friday’s 7-0 win over Newport News Apprentice School, David Brown (Hatboro-Horsham) and Matt Matricardi (Upper Dublin) each threw a scoreless inning in relief and faced the minimum number of batters. Matricardi struck out the side.
Jared Melone (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a double in West Chester’s 9-1 win over Slippery Rock in game one of a doubleheader split on Saturday. In Friday’s 15-6 win over Shepherd, Melone was 2-for-6 with three runs scored and one RBI in his West Chester debut.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Ithaca College freshman guard Riley Thompson (Council Rock North) was named the ECAC Division III’s Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week as well as Empire 8 Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. It was his third Rookie of the Week honor. Thompson posted a strong conclusion to his rookie campaign with two more excellent scoring performances in the final week of the regular season that helped Ithaca to a 1-1 week. Thompson paced the Bombers with 18 points, going 7-of-12 from the field, which included 3-of-6 from three-point range in IC’s 75-74 road loss at Utica. He capped his year with a 23-point finale. In addition to the points, he finished the week with a combined eight rebounds and six assists between the two contests.
Sophomore guard Jimmy Murray (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had six points in Moravian’s 68-63 loss to the University of Scranton in the 2017 Landmark Conference Championship game on Saturday.
Senior Ryan Charity (Pennsbury) scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting off the bench in Cabrini’s 73-71 loss to Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday.
Penn State Abington freshman forward John Ryan (William Tennent) was named to the NEAC Third Team All-Conference for his outstanding rookie year. Ryan led the Nittany Lions with 16 points per game and reeled in six boards per game. Earlier in the season, Ryan etched his name in the record books when he scored 34 points in an 82-70 win over Penn College. The 34 points puts him tied for fourth place in the single game scoring leaders.
Ryan Connolly (Souderton) knocked down seven three-pointers and finished with a team-high 24 points in
No. 6 Kutztown’s 91-85 win over West Chester on Saturday, extending KU’s win streak to 16. Not only was the redshirt senior one three-pointer shy of the single-game school record, he also became the program’s all-time leader in career three-pointers with 220. Anthony Lee (Abington) added 22 points with 12 of his points coming from beyond the arc. He also hauled in five rebounds and had three steals. Saturday’s win clinched the outright PSAC East title. In Wednesday’s 85-79 win over Bloomsburg, Lee scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting with five rebounds.
Junior Zach Quattro (Hatboro-Horsham) netted a game-high 22 points in Ursinus College’s 78-64 win at fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins in the first round of the Centennial Conference Championship on Wednesday.
Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift third-seeded Gwynedd Mercy to a 73-71 win at second-seeded Cabrini in a 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinal contest on Wednesday night. He finished with a game-high 28 points. In Monday’s opening round 81-77 win over sixth-seeded Centenary, Goodman scored 17 points and also had double-digit rebounds.
Lock Haven freshman Amir Hinton (Abington) was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week for the week ending
Feb. 19. This marks the eighth total PSAC weekly award for Hinton as he earned PSAC East Freshman of the Week a total of seven times. The Abington graduate was once again the leader for the Bald Eagles, and he sparked LHU to a pair of wins. Hinton scored 21 points in a win over Cheyney that saw him play limited minutes. He followed that with 29 points in LHU’s comeback win over West Chester. The strong two games helped Hinton retake the lead in the PSAC scoring race at 23.3 points per game. He also had four rebounds, four steals and three assists against Cheyney. He added seven rebounds and three assists versus West Chester. His 23.3 points per game through 24 games ranks No. 1 in the PSAC and 11th in NCAA DII.
Hinton scored 27 points in Lock Haven’s 82-79 loss at Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 97-85 victory over Mansfield, Hinton scored 42 points, just four away from the school record. The Abington graduate was 12-of-21 from the field, 16-of-19 from the free-throw line, and he added two three-pointers. Hinton also tallied seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. It’s the first 40-point game for Lock Haven since 2001. The school record for points in a single game is 46.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sajanna Bethea (Pennsbury) posted 20 points and nine rebounds in St. Peter’s 76-60 loss to Siena on Friday night. In Wednesday’s 51-50 loss to Iona, Bethea scored 19 points.
Erin Maher (North Penn) scored 14 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds in Philadelphia University’s 62-49 loss to Caldwell in the opening round of the CACC Tournament on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 81-74 win over Wilmington, Alynna Williams (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 18 points.
Jordan Vitelli (Central Bucks South) had six points and a team-high eight rebounds in the University of the Sciences 64-42 win over Concordia in the CACC Championship quarterfinals on Saturday. The Devils will be back in action next Saturday in the CACC Championship semifinals, taking on Bloomfield at Caldwell.
Senior Lauren Crisler (North Penn) scored 12 points and also had seven rebounds in American University’s 66-59 win over Loyola Maryland on Saturday. Michael Harris (Abington) also had seven rebounds. Crisler was one of two seniors honored on Saturday’s Senior Day. She will graduate with a degree in finance and a minor in economics. A 2015-16 All-Patriot third team selection and 2016-17 All-Patriot League Preseason Team member, she will close her career with over 632 points and 403 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 50-48 win over Navy, Crisler led the team with eight rebounds and put up a team-high in assists with three.
Sophomore Gabrielle Nolan (Abington) scored the first seven points of her career in West Chester’s 74-68 win over Millersville on Wednesday.
Freshman Gabbi Wright (Cheltenham) came off the bench to score 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in 14 minutes in Kutztown’s 72-59 win at West Chester on Saturday.
Albright junior Alysha Lofton (Central Bucks South) received MAC Commonwealth first team honors. It was her first selection to the first team. Lofton is shooting 53 percent from the field and is nearly averaging a double-double, scoring 12.5 points per game while grabbing 9.8 rebounds a game. She is ranked second in the league in rebounding and is second in double-doubles with 12 double-doubles this season. She is also ranked second in the conference in steals and third in assist-to-turnover ratio. Lofton won two MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week awards and picked up an ECAC Player of the Week award.
Lofton finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals in Albright’s 53-50 loss to Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship title game on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 67-53 win over Lycoming, Lofton had 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also had six assists.
Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored 14 points – which included a 6-for-6 effort at the foul line – and also had five rebounds in Shippensburg’s 65-59 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday to finish off a 16-0 record in PSAC Eastern Division play. SU is the first PSAC team in seven years to sweep the divisional schedule.
Monet McGorda (Cheltenham) scored 11 points and Larissa Leyes (Upper Dublin) added 10 points in Gwynedd Mercy’s 67-49 win over Cabrini in the championship game of the Colonial States Athletic Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday. With the win, the team punched its ticket to the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament. In Wednesday’s 88-69 win over second-seeded Neumann in the semifinals, McGorda netted 12 of her career-high 16 points in the second half. Rookie Marissa Sandone (Souderton) contributed a three-pointer with six seconds remaining in the first half to give Gwynedd a 43-30 lead at the break.
Widener junior Allison Gallagher (Souderton) was named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Second Team. Gallagher had another solid season for the Pride by averaging 13.0 points, a team-leading 5.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest. She was also one of the league’s most lethal three-point shooters and ranked fifth in the conference for canning 43 shots from beyond the arc. The junior guard ended the season on a high note by eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone in the team’s 67-59 victory over Alvernia on Feb. 18.
Widener freshman Devan Rimmer (Pennridge) was named the Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Rookie of the Year and also earned honorable mention status. Rimmer is Widener’s fifth freshman overall and second in the last three seasons to be named rookie of the year. She led all freshmen in the conference in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game and ranked sixth among all players in the category. Rimmer also made an immediate impact by ranking among the Pride’s best in rebounding (4.6 pg), assists (1.8 pg) and steals (1.7 pg). Her most notable performance came on Feb. 14 in an 83-73 road win over Arcadia when she poured in 37 points. The mark was just shy of the school record of 39 set in 2006.
Junior guard Vicky Tumasz (North Penn) scored 10 points in Chestnut Hill’s 70-53 CACC opening round loss to Bloomfield College on Saturday. She also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal. In Tuesday’s 89-72 loss to Goldey-Beacom, Tumasz scored 14 points and added three steals and two rebounds.
Senior guard Rachel Falkowski (Central Bucks South) scored 12 points in East Stroudsburg’s 68-61 win at Mansfield on Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Seniors Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) and Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the Fall Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade point average in the fall semester and participate in one of the Patriot League’s seven fall championship sports. Tofig, a Material Science and Engineering major, earned a 3.51 GPA. Glatt, a Marketing major, earned a 3.39 GPA.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin) was held scoreless until late in the third quarter but still finished with three goals and an assist in Princeton’s 10-8 loss to Hofstra in front of 1,684 fans on Saturday. Through three games, the UD graduate has seven goals and nine assists, leading the team in assists and points. In Tuesday’s 10-6 win over Marist, Sowers had a pair of goals and three assists. Sowers had a seven-point game against NJIT in his debut and came back with another impressive performance to give him 12 points (four goals, eight assists) through two games. As a point of comparison, only three Princeton players last year – for the entire season – had more than eight assists. Sowers scored the first goal with 55 seconds left in the first quarter to start a 6-0 Tiger run, a run that would feature another goal and two assists from the freshman.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Brenda McDermott (North Penn) had three assists and two goals in Temple’s 18-12 win over Lafayette on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 14-13 win over St. Joseph’s, McDermott scored three goals.
Freshman Mikki Raymond (Abington) scored a pair of goals, had two caused turnovers and won two draws in La Salle’s 15-12 loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 13-7 win over Manhattan College, Raymond had a pair of goals and two draw controls.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
McDaniel junior Kristen Upton (Central Bucks South) earned first team honors on the field, and she earned High Honors in the classroom. A biochemistry/exercise chemistry major, she started all 22 games as a stalwart on the backline that allowed just 13 goals in more than 2000 minutes. She also contributed four goals to the offense.
SOFTBALL
Senior Valerie Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) was 5-for-8 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the University of Connecticut’s 6-0 win over Florida A&M and 3-2 loss to Arkansas in eight innings. In UConn’s win over Florida A&M, Sadowl was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. In the loss to Arkansas, Sadowl had two hits.
Emily Mayhew (Pennridge) went 2-for-4 and scored a run in Bloomsburg’s 4-0 win over Fairmont State on Sunday.
Suzanne Swanicke (Pennsbury) contributed a run-scoring triple in the sixth inning that knotted the score 1-1 in La Salle’s 6-1 loss to UNC Charlotte in the Green & White Invitational title game on Sunday. In Saturday’s 7-5 win over Robert Morris, Swanicke had two RBIs, Mackenzie Obert (Pennsbury) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and Christina Bascara (Pennsbury) was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. In Saturday’s 6-4 win over Fairfield, Bascara was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Jackie Heim (William Tennent) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and double. In Friday’s 12-4 win over Fairfield, Obert was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Bascara was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, Swanicke was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs, and Heim was 1-for-2 with a run scored. In La Salle’s 4-1 win over UNC Charlotte on Friday, Bascara was 1-for-2 with a triple and RBI.
Freshman Spenser Gray (Quakertown) singled, scored a run and stole a base in UNC Charlotte’s 6-1 win over La Salle in the Green & White Invitational title game on Saturday. In Saturday’s 18-1 win over Robert Morris, Gray was 1-for-4 with a run scored, RBI and stolen base.
Cheyenne Jones (Harry S Truman) hit a solo home run in the top of the second that turned out to be the game winner to help Kutztown finish the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach with a 2-1 win over West Virginia State on Sunday. Sara Keeney (Wiliam Tennent) finished 1-or-2 with two walks and a run scored while Jones also drew a walk.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Gettysburg freshman Ogden Leyens (Upper Dublin) claimed both the Most Outstanding Performer and the Outstanding Rookie Performer awards after a stellar final third day at the Centennial Conference Championships. Leyens shattered the school record in winning the 1650 freestyle before leading off for the victorious 400 freestyle relay. He finished the meet with five gold medals, including three NCAA B-cuts, four school records and one Centennial Conference record. His efforts helped the Bullets place second in the team standings, finishing only behind Swarthmore College.
IUP’s Andrew Richey (William Tennent) finished 16th in the 100 free with a time of 48.22 at the PSAC Championships.
Shippensburg freshman Jeff Beyer (Wissahickon) placed fourth in the 1650-yard ‘mile’ freestyle with a time of 16:11.52 to improve to seventh all-time at SU in the event. Beyer’s swim was one of optimal consistency as 30 of his 33 splits were clocked between 29 and 30 seconds. He also was part of the 400 free relay that finished seventh with a time of 3:09.89.
Senior Bob Bantley (Upper Dublin) was part of Penn State’s 400 medley relay team that earned a fifth place finish in a season best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:08.04 at the 2017 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. The time was the fourth fastest in the event in program history. On Friday, Bantley was part of the 200 free relay that finished seventh in a season-best time of 1:19.00. On Wednesday, Bantley was part of the 200 medley relay that swam the second fastest time in program history, clocking in at 1:25.27 to rank fifth. The time surpassed the NCAA’s provisional standard.
Bloomsburg freshman Devon Polak (Upper Dublin) finished fifth in the ‘B’ final of the 200 breaststroke (13th overall) at the 2017 PSAC Championships last Sunday. Senior Bobby Lenahan (Hatboro-Horsham) finished sixth in the ‘B’ final (14th overall). Both added points to the Huskies’ team total.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Eve Kosten (North Penn) was part of the University of Buffalo’s gold medal-winning 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:29.97 at the Mid-American Conference Swimming Championships on Thursday. On Friday, Kosten was part of the fifth place 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:43.49.
Kutztown’s Bridget Perdoch (Pennsbury) finished 18th in the 200 breaststroke in the C-Final with a career best time of 2:30.67 at the 2017 PSAC Swimming Championships last Sunday. Her time was the fifth all-time in program history. Perdoch finished 21st in the 200 breast preliminaries with a time of 2:31.68.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Pitt senior Chris Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished 10th in the long jump with a mark of 7.11m at the ACC Indoor Championships on Friday. He held the final spot in the qualifiers until the second-to-last competitor passed him. He also finished 11th in the triple jump, posting a jump of 14.73m.
Shippensburg junior Alex Balla (Quakertown) finished fourth in the 5K with a time of 15:10.26 at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Widener senior Alex Cucciarre (Souderton) earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team honors in the shot put.
Kutztown’s Anthony Bullaro (Pennsbury) broke his own school record in the 60m hurdles at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Championships on Sunday. The Pennsbury graduate’s time was .01 seconds better than his previous school record, which he set last year, as he crossed in 8.26 to place fifth and just .04 seconds off the podium. Obi Ogbonna (Harry S Truman) finished eighth with a time of 9:45. Jhaloni Johnson (Springfield) finished seventh in the 400m finals with a time of 50.00. He also was part of the 4x400m relay that posted KU’s top time of the season (3:22.85) to finish sixth. On Saturday, Brandon Raguz (Central Bucks South) finished on the podium in the pole vault for the second straight year. A year after finishing second at the 2016 championships, Raguz placed third in the pole vault by clearing 4.81m (15-09.25) to earn six points. He decided to not compete at the first five heights before beginning the day at 4.71m (15-05.50). After missing his first two attempts, the junior needed to clear the height on his third and final attempt in order to avoid recording no height. He came through and would go on to clear 4.81m on his first try, which gave him the tiebreaker over the fourth place. Ryan Benner (Pennridge) set a new career best in the 200 with a time of 23.09.
Bloomsburg senior James Wilson (Central Bucks South) posted a school record time of 7:57.66 to finish fourth in the 4x800m relay at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday. The time was less than six seconds behind the winning foursome from IUP. Freshman Declan McDonald (Central Bucks West) was part of the distance medley relay that posted a time of 10:59.53 to finish in eighth place.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Monmouth sophomore Amber Stratz (Central Bucks South) earned an ECAC qualifying time of 2:54.23 to win the 1000 at the Fastrack Last Chance Meet on Saturday. At the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships last Sunday, sophomore Allison Taub (Council Rock South) won gold in the shot put with a winning throw of 14.04. Monmouth captured the team title.
Shippensburg freshman Sophia Carrabba (Abington) was part of the 4×800 relay that finished fourth with a time of 9:44.76 at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday. Freshman Dior Alston (Cheltenham) qualified for the finals in the 400m run in her debut competition. Junior Lindsay Sheehan (Pennridge) ran season bests of 8.08 seconds in the 60 meters and 26.10 seconds in the 200 meters.
Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) finished fourth in the 3000m to earn Kutztown five points at the 2017 PSAC Indoor Championships on Sunday. On Saturday, Bresadola was part of the distance medley relay that finished in fourth place in a season-best time of 12:28.20. The time ranks seventh all-time in KU indoor program history.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior captain Christian Lizana (Pennridge) had six assisted blocks and six kills in Vassar College’s 3-0 win over The Sage Colleges on Thursday night.
Daniel Ford (Council Rock North) had 49 assists in Saint Francis’ 3-2 win over George Mason on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 win over the University of Charleston, Ford had four blocks, 38 assists and 10 digs.
WRESTLING
Kutztown freshman Mikey O’Brien (North Penn) made his mark at the 2017 Super Region I Championships on Saturday, finishing fifth at 141. Wrestling his way into the regional lineup all the way up the last week of the season, O’Brien won two of his matches Saturday and 4-of-6 for the weekend to earn fifth place. He won by decision and major decision with his only loss coming to eighth-ranked Dylan Nace of ESU. On Friday, Jeff Reimel (North Penn) pinned two opponents at 197 to move to day two in his first regional tournament.
