Kutztown senior Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) will go down as one of the most decorated Kutztown wrestlers of all-time. The redshirt senior entered Saturday at the 2016 NCAA National
Championships 2-0 with a chance at a national title. He needed to overcome an injury suffered in Friday’s quarterfinal bout, but in the final moments of Martoccio’s three matches on Saturday, it was clear the injury had an effect on Kutztown’s 157-pounder. Wrestling in tied or one-point matches in all three of his matches on Saturday, Martoccio started on bottom in third periods and struggled to get up. His hard work and determination earned him a sixth place finish at the national championships, the best of his career, and he earned All-American recognition for the second straight year. A team captain, Martoccio closed his career with 89 wins, third in program history. He is a two-time All-American, two-time national qualifier, four-time regional medalist and this year’s Super Region I champion. He held a 28-6 record and a 17-match winning streak this season and finishes with an 89-38 record.
On Friday night, Martoccio went down with a leg injury in a 1-0 quarterfinal match. The cause of the injury was due to a ruled illegal move by his opponent, and after being attended to for nearly five minutes, Martoccio was unable to continue. Since the injury was caused by an illegal move, Martoccio was declared the victor and needed to be carried to and from the mat by his coaches to have his hand raised. The win earned Martoccio his second straight All-America honor. He is the fifth two-time All-American in program history. KU athletic trainer Jack Entriken worked on Martoccio post-match at the on-site training room, and after nearly 15 minutes, Martoccio was able to walk under his own power.
