BASEBALL
Penn State Abington freshman Ryan McCarty (Pennsbury), the NEAC Rookie of the Year, will join the Alpharetta Aviators in the Sunbelt League this summer. The Sunbelt League provided a summer program dedicated to helping student-athletes achieve their dream of playing baseball at the professional level. They will be coached by former Major League Baseball player Brandon Boggs and face elite competition against current Division I and II athletes from across the nation. McCarty had a breakout season his freshman year and earned first team All-NEAC honors. He finished in the top five in the NEAC in batting average, RBIs, hits runs and home runs. He led the team with a .433 batting average. On the mound, McCarty led the team with five wins and had a 3.91 ERA.
McCarty was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and Brett Guaglionona (Abington) was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored in Abington's 9-7 win over Keuka College in the NEAC Tournament. Later in the day, the Nittany Lions fell to Penn College 9-4. McCarty doubled and Guaglionona scored three runs. In the Nittany Lions’ 3-2 loss to Penn College in game two of the NEAC Tournament, McCarty was 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the Nittany Lions’ 13-12 win over SUNY Poly in the NEAC opener, Guaglionona was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Josh Kim (Council Rock South) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in Villanova’s 13-10 win at Xavier on Friday.
Jefferson University junior Timothy Brodhag (William Tennent) earned All-CACC second team honors. An outfielder, Brodhag boasted the longest hitting streak of the season for the Rams, collecting a hit in 17 straight games. He had 12 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games, both of which ranked third on the Rams. Brodhag hit .297 with a .367 on-base percentage and a .456 slugging percentage. He finished the year with 47 hits, including a team-best 15 doubles. He knocked in 23 runs and scored 27 runs. Brodhag played in 41 games as a junior after playing in a total of 44 over his first two seasons.
Senior Brennan Snyder (Central Bucks West) doubled and drove in a run in Elizabethtown’s 10-2 loss to Catholic University last Saturday in the Landmark Championships. The CB West graduate appeared in 77 career games and lost the 2017 season due to an injury. He finished the season with new career highs across the board with 35 hits, 32 runs, 10 doubles, five triples, four home runs and 32 RBIs in 38 games. In last Saturday’s 5-3 elimination game win over Moravian, Mike Christy (North Penn) hit a two-run home run in the fourth to knot the score 3-3. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs. His second hit was the 99th of his career.
Freshman Matt Ernst (Central Bucks East) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in No. 3 Arcadia’s 13-2 win over No. 7 Catholic on Friday. The win advanced the Knights to their third game on Saturday when they fell to No. 1 Rowan 4-1 in 12 innings. In Arcadia’s 14-12 regular season win over Penn State-Harrisburg, Ernst was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Brett Moyer (Souderton) was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Monmouth freshman RHP Dan Klepchick (Central Bucks South) was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week
for the week ending May 13. It is the fifth time this season he has received this honor and third week in a row. Klepchick threw his fourth consecutive complete game in a win over Siena, scattering four hits and allowing one run. He walked two and struck out four and did not allow an extra-base hit. He needed just 99 pitches to throw his fourth complete game.
Klepchick was named both the MAAC Pitcher and Rookie of the Week for the week ending May 7 after tossing his second consecutive complete game. The CB South graduate fired seven shutout innings at Saint Peter’s, striking out a career-high 12 batters, the most for a Hawk this season. He used just 80 pitches to complete the game and allowed just one runner to second base. He scattered three hits and lowered his season ERA to 3.76. His ERA in conference play is 2.77.
Joe Molettiere (Pennridge) picked up his second win of the season in Monmouth’s 4-2 win over Fairfield in game one of a doubleheader sweep on Friday. The Pennridge graduate allowed two hits and one run in two innings of relief while striking out one and walking one. Danny Long (Pennridge) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Monmouth is the MAAC regular season champion and number one seed heading into the upcoming MAAC Tournament. In last Saturday’s 7-1 win over Siena, Long was 3-for-5 with a home run, RBI and two runs. Molettiere threw a scoreless inning in relief. In Monmouth’s 2-1 win over Siena, Klepchick threw his third straight complete game to help MU to a doubleheader split after falling in the opener. Long was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
Ursinus College junior Carter Usowski (Central Bucks East) earned second team All-Centennial Conference honors and is a two-time All-Centennial performer after an honorable mention accolade a year ago. He hit .333 with four home runs and a team-leading 34 RBIs, landing second on the team in on-base percentage (.432) and third in slugging percentage (.508), runs (33), and doubles (11). Usowski ranks fifth in school history with 28 doubles and ninth in RBIs (74).
Gwynedd Mercy junior Dave Tatoian (Pennridge) was named to the All-Colonial States Athletic Conference first team for the third straight year. He is second in the CSAC in slugging percentage (.716) and tied for second in home runs with six. He is batting .379 with a team-leading 29 runs and 20 extra-base hits along with 24 RBIs and 15 walks. This season, he has 12 multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games. Tatoian has struck out only eight times in 102 at-bats. He collected his 100th career RBI earlier this season.
Gwynedd Mercy junior Nick Mulvey (Bensalem) was named to the All-Colonial States Athletic Conference second team. It is his second all-conference nod in as many years. He leads the team in RBIs with 25 while adding 26 runs, 12 stolen bases, seven doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs.
Mulvey was selected the CSAC Baseball Hitter of the Week for the week ending May 6. In four games, Mulvey batted .444 with seven RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. In the Griffins’ win at nationally-ranked Keystone, he knocked in a pair of runs. His best game came in game two of a doubleheader against Neumann that saw him total a career best five RBIs while going 4-for-6 in the 12-8 victory. In game one, he added a pair of hits and a run scored.
Gwynedd Mercy senior Shaughn Wright (Pennsbury) received All-Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention. It is his second straight honorable mention recognition. He is hitting a career best .352 in 29 starts, including 11 doubles, three home runs, 23 runs and 22 RBIs.
Mulvey had a pair of hits and an RBI in Gwynedd Mercy’s 8-7 win over Keystone in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament. The Griffins fell to Keystone 4-2 in the title game later that same day. In the Griffins’ 2-1 win over Neumann in an elimination game, Tatoian was 2-for-3 and Evan Miller (Harry S Truman) was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Earlier in the day, Gwynedd fell to Keystone 17-7. Wright was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. In Gwynedd Mercy’s 14-6 win over Neumann in the opening round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, Mulvey collected his 100th career hit in the bottom of the first on a lead-off single. He becomes the 33rd player in program history to hit the century mark. Mulvey finished the game 2-for-4. Wright tied a single-game record with five hits, going a perfect 5-for-5 on the day. He scored a career-high four runs. Tatoian launched his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth inning. He was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
Mason Nadeau (North Penn) was 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and run scored in Penn State’s 8-4 loss to Iowa on Saturday. In PSU’s 13-1 win over Xavier in game two of a doubleheader split, Nadeau went 2-for-5 with a double out of the leadoff spot.
West Chester junior Jared Melone (North Penn) was named the all-Atlantic Player of the Year by the Division
II Collegiate Commissioners Association. He also was named the 2018 PSAC East Athlete of the Year as well as the National College Baseball Writers (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Player of the Year. He is the first Golden Bear to be named NCBWA Atlantic Region Player of the Year since 2008. Melone also was named to the CoSIDA’s Google Cloud Academic All-District Two team. The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Baseball Team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Melone, an accounting major, boasts a 3.91 GPA. Starting in all 46 games for the No. 19 Golden Rams this season, Melone leads the country with a .480 batting average. It is the highest in WCU history/No. 6 in PSAC history while his 1.48 RBIs per game and .532 on-base percentage both put the junior inside the top seven nationally.
West Chester junior pitcher Jon Fisher (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned second team All-PSAC honors. The PW graduate ranks second in West Chester with five victories in 2018 and his 3.58 ERA is the lowest of any starter in the Golden Rams’ rotation. Fisher has two complete games this year, and his .248 opponent average stands as the third lowest on West Chester’s roster. `
Kyle Irwin (Upper Moreland) was 3-for-4 with a double in No. 19 West Chester’s 7-6 season-ending loss to No. 2 Millersville on Saturday in the 2018 NCAA D2 Atlantic Regional. Melone had one RBI and closed out the year with 69 RBIs, putting the junior at number two on WCU’s single season leaderboard behind Matt Cotellese’s 71 RBIs in 2009.
Freshman Andrew Mayhew (Pennridge) started and pitched three hitless innings, walking six and striking out two, in Millersville’s 10-9 win over Gannon in 10 innings.
Bloomsburg sophomore Cole Swiger (Upper Dublin) earned All-PSAC East second team honors. The Huskies’ leadoff hitter posted a .364 batting average (59-of-162), which has him third on the team in hitting. He leads the team in doubles (18) and runs scored (47) and ranks second in hits (59), total bases (91) and stolen bases (11). His 18 doubles are tied for second in the league. Swiger also tied for the team lead in walks with 27 and was hit by a pitch a team-high 11 times, giving him an on-base percentage of .478 out of the leadoff spot. Swiger has four home runs and 30 RBIs and now has 11 home runs and 64 RBIs in his first two seasons with the Huskies.
FIELD HOCKEY
Kutztown senior Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District 2 At-Large Teams for Division II as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association of American (CoSIDA). A four-time All-PSAC selection, three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and two-year team captain, Konowal completed her career starting in all 73 games and collecting 12 goals and 12 assists from her midfield position. A sports management major, Konowal has accumulated a 4.0 GPA, is a six-time Dean’s List honoree and three-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction (3.9+ GPA). The career sweep of All-PSAC accolades recorded by Konowal is the first in four years at KU, an achievement last reached in 2013. The field hockey program won 41 games during Konowal’s four years as a starter.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Junior goaltender Riley White (Plymouth Whitemarsh) tallied nine saves and also was credited with three ground balls in Cabrini’s 12-7 loss at No. 5 Wesleyan in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The loss ended the Blue and White’s campaign with a 17-3 record, tied for most wins in program history. In Cabrini’s 21-10 win over Colorado Collage in a second round NCAA Tournament game, White recorded 10 saves to earn his 14th victory of the season. The win vaulted the Cavaliers into the round of 16.
Princeton University sophomore Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin) was named a third team All-America in the Inside Lacrosse media voting. Sowers leads Division I in assists per game and points per game and set the Princeton single-season record of 83 points, breaking his own record of 82, which he set a year ago as a freshman. Sowers was also named first team All-ECAC.
Ursinus College sophomore Evan Scott (Upper Dublin) received honorable mention All-Centennial Conference recognition. Scott took a big leap forward as one of the league’s premier defensive midfielders, racking up a team-high 11 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls. The sophomore became a dangerous weapon in the transition game, collecting six goals and an assist after registering one goal and two helpers as a rookie. Scott netted a goal in six different games, including a stretch of four in a row at the end of the campaign. He racked up a career-high three caused turnovers against fifth-ranked Cabrini on March 17 and added two more against No. 5 Gettysburg a week later.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
St. Joseph’s freshman Sam McGee (Abington) was named to the 2018 Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team. The Abington graduate had four goals and three assists in A-10 postseason games. McGee notched a game-high six points on a game-high four goals and two assists to lead third-seeded Saint Joseph’s to a 14-9 win over sixth-seeded George Mason in the A-10 quarterfinals. She went on to dish out a helper in the Hawks’ 19-12 loss to second-seeded and eventual champion Richmond. The freshman attacker added two ground balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls in those two games combined.
West Chester junior Maggie Stella (Central Bucks East) was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Atlantic Region first team. The CB East graduate also was named to the second team All-ECAC squad. The PSAC Tournament MVP provided a spark to the Golden Rams all season. She finished third on the team in scoring with 69 points and second in goals with 57. Her 111 draw controls led the squad and are the most in a single season since 2013. She became just the second player in school history to eclipse 100 draw controls in a season.
West Chester senior Sarah Gebre (Central Bucks West) was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Atlantic Region second team. A three-year starter, Gebre appeared in all 20 games for the Golden Rams, finishing her final college campaign with one goal and one assist from a primarily defensive midfield position. She collected 37 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers.
Stella had four goals and Emily Schulze (North Penn) registered a hat trick in No. 5 West Chester’s 16-14 loss to No. 13 East Stroudsburg in the NCAA Quarterfinals last Saturday.
East Stroudsburg senior midfielder Chessie Rahmer (Souderton) was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Atlantic Region first team. Rahmer, a IWLCA All-America third team selection last year, was named to the first team for the second time in as many years. She had 50 goals and six assists for 56 points while ranking second on the Warriors in draw controls (65) and caused turnovers (37) and third in ground balls (56). She finished her career with 147 goals, fourth most in school history, and 175 points, ranking eighth. This season she had five goals, an assist and seven draw controls in an early-season 11-10 win over Millersville and later posted seven straight games with at least three goals – ESU’s best stretch in 15 years. She had four goals and two assists in a 19-14 regular season win over Mercyhurst and five goals in a dominant 17-7 win at No. 7 LIU Post to finish the regular season. She had four goals versus West Chester in the regional championship game.
Rahmer had two goals in East Stroudsburg’s 20-14 loss to Florida Southern in the NCAA Division II semifinals on Friday at the University of Tampa. In ESU’s 16-14 win over previously unbeaten West Chester in the Atlantic Region title game, Rahmer scored three of her four goals in the second half. In the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, ESU rallied from a five-goal first-half deficit for a 12-11 win over Mercyhurst. Rahmer had one goal, three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.
SOFTBALL
Arcadia junior shortstop Jackie Bilotti (North Penn) was named to the first team All-Region by the NFCA and
First Team Google Cloud Academic All-District. The All-Region teams are voted on by member head coaches while the Google Cloud Academic All-District teams are voted on by CoSIDA members. This marks the third straight year Bilotti has been named to the All-Region team, picking up her first selection as first team and her second straight year on the Academic All-District first team. On the season, Bilotti was a powerhouse for the Knights. The North Penn graduate hit a team high .403 on the season, starting all 40 games at shortstop. Bilotti also led the team with 54 hits, five triples, 19 stolen bases and 34 RBIs, leading to her second straight MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year award while earning first team All-MAC Commonwealth recognition.
Jefferson University sophomore Jovanna Alfonsi (North Penn) was named to the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the CACC Championships. Alfonsi hit a three-run home run in a 9-4 loss to Dominican while she drew three walks over the course of two games.
Bloomsburg senior outfielder Emily Mayhew (Pennridge) was named the All-PSAC Central squad. The Pennridge graduate played and started in 40 games this season, finishing second on the team with a .370 batting average. She tallied 51 hits on the season, including the 200th of her career. She had nine doubles and was second on the team and eighth in the conference with seven home runs. Mayhew also led the team in runs scored with 33 and was second on the team with 22 RBIs. Her .587 slugging percentage was the second highest on the team, and her .389 on-base percentage (OBP) was tied for fourth on the team. This is Mayhew’s fourth consecutive all-conference selection.
Kutztown University junior Sara Keeny (William Tennent) was voted to the Division II Conference
Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) All-Atlantic Region Second Team. The consensus All-Region outfielder was also named All-Region Second Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). It is the first D2CCA regional honor for Keeny, who is also a three-time NFCA All-Region honoree. She is the first consensus All-Region player for KU since 2016. The accolade adds to a growing list for Keeny in 2018 as she garnered All-PSAC first team honors for the third year in a row. Keeny started 36 games out of 37 her junior season and led KU in batting average (.424), hits (53), runs (29), RBIs (18) and stolen bases (24) in 125 plate appearances. Her 24 stolen bases led the PSAC, the .424 average was second and her .468 on-base percentage was eighth. She also led the PSAC with five triples. In the KU record books, Keeny is tied for third all-time with 89 career stolen bases, which is tied for fourth all-time in PSAC history. Her .424 average at the plate ranks ninth all-time at KU for a season, and her .407 career average is tied for second all-time.
Kutztown University redshirt junior Cheyenne Jones (Harry S Truman) was named to the 2018 Eastern Division All-PSAC first team. Jones played in 34 games, making 30 starts. She finished with 31 hits, including six doubles (second on KU) and three home runs. She had 12 RBIs and 13 runs scored with a .310 batting average (fourth on KKU) in 100 at-bats.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Bucknell freshman Connor McMenamin (Souderton) placed in the top half of the 3,000 steeplechase’s field at the IC4A Championships last Saturday at Princeton’s Weaver Stadium. McMenamin posted a time of 9:13.47 to take 15th.
St. Joseph’s sophomore short sprinter David Bryant (Upper Dublin) was selection as a 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars it was announced in the April 5 edition of Diverse: Issues In High Education, Volume 35, No. 5. Each sports scholar must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and is active in his campus or in the community.
Bryant was part of St. Joseph’s 4×100 relay that posted a time of 41.56, just .02 seconds off the program record, en route to an eighth place finish at the 2018 IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium. The relay team won its heat over LIU Post by .20 seconds to become the first 4x100m relay in SJU program history to score at an IC4A outdoor meet. With their top eight finish, Bryant and the rest of his relay team earned All-East recognition. At the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Bryant was part of the 4x100m relay that turned in a time of 42.85 to finish seventh.
Elizabethtown senior Mitch Schlegel (Souderton) won the 400m dash with a time of 49.21 at the Landmark Championships. He was part of the first place 4x100m relay that posted a time of 42.53 and the winning 4×400 relay that finished in a time of 3:20.46. Schlegel received first team All-Landmark honors in all three events.
Ursinus College freshman Riley Grourke (Pennridge) smashed his individual standard by 22 feet to place fifth in the javelin at 170-10.00 at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships. Freshman Griffin McMann (Pennridge) took seventh in the shot put with a heave of 46-2.00. It was the first career CC place for McMann. Sophomore Brody Johnson (Central Bucks West) was part of the 4x100m relay that placed fifth with a time of 44.52.
Lebanon Valley senior Stephen Shelly (Quakertown) was named to the 2018 MAC Spring Sportsmanship Teams. One student-athlete in each sport was nominated by their coach for inclusion on the team, which recognizes student-athletes who exemplify great character and demonstrate an act of sportsmanship both on and off the field of play. They represent their team, institution and the conference with high integrity and exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches and opponents.
Widener senior Nalson Vo (Souderton) was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Spring Sportsmanship Team. The MAC Sportsmanship Teams recognize student-athletes who exemplify great character and demonstrate the act of sportsmanship both on and off the field. These student-athletes were selected by the head coaches from their respective teams. They represent their team, institution and the conference with high integrity and exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches and opponents.
Widener junior Sean Stovall (Springfield Township) continued his strong late-season push with a 55.09 in the 400m hurdles to win the event at the Mideast Invitational on Thursday. In last Monday’s Swarthmore Final Qualifier, Stoval posted a time of 54.98 in the 400m hurdles to place sixth.
Kutztown senior Brandon Raguz (Central Bucks South) punched his ticket to the NCAA National Championships in Charlotte, N.C., May 24-26. The CB South graduate was named All-Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). It is his third straight All-Region honor, and it is the second trip to national in as many years after earning All-American honors in 2017. He is ranked eighth in Division II and first in the Atlantic Region in the pole vault, fresh off his first ever PSAC championship. He broke the meet record with a height of 17-00.25. It was a career best mark, second in school history and an NCAA automatic mark that qualified him for nationals.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Monmouth junior Allison Taub (Council Rock South) place seventh in the shot put at the ECAC Division I Championships. The CR South grad garnered All-East honors with a mark of 46’8.75”. This is Taub’s second All-East honors of the year in the shot put after finishing eighth in the event at the indoor championships. Brianna Stratz (Central Bucks South) finished sixth in the 800m with a time of 2:08.86.
Lebanon Valley junior Hannah Kramlik (Pennridge) turned in a personal best in the 3,000m steeplechase at Swarthmore’s Final Qualifier Meet last Monday. Kramlik finished 14th in 11:55.91, good enough to rank her third in program history.
Holy Family junior Jaclyn Timoney (Council Rock South) tied her season-best in the triple jump and finished fourth overall with a distance of 34’0.75” (10.38m) at the fifth annual CACC Championship.
Ursinus College freshman Rachel Coleman (Wissahickon) earned second team All-Centennial Conference honors as a member of the runner-up 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Coleman’s impressive finishing kick lifted the 4x100m relay to a silver medal in the first event of the championships. The Bears’ unit completed the race in 50.24 for their first outdoor medal in the event since 2015.
Widener senior Allison Gallagher (Souderton) finished in the top 20 in the 400m hurdles at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on Monday, clocking in a 1:06.13. Gallagher also posted a 16.08 in the 100m hurdles.
Kutztown University junior Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) was named All-Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the second consecutive season. Bresadola, who is ranked fifth in the region in the 1500m run, finished a career-best fourth in the 1500m at PSACs in a PR of 4:41.33 for sixth in school history. Bresadola also ran as part of the seventh place 4x800m relay team that finished in a season best 9:45.55.
Allison King (North Penn) and Emily Magnant (Hatboro-Horsham) earned All-Region honors from the United State Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as members of West Chester’s 4x400m relay that finished third in the PSAC Championships and netted them All-PSAC honors.
