BASEBALL
West Chester sophomore Jared Melone (North Penn) was named to the 2017 Atlantic Regional all-tournament team. Melone led the team in both hits (10) and RBIs (7) while batting .588 (10-for-17) during the four games. He went 5-for-5 with four RBIs, reaching base all six times at the plate in the championship game on Monday afternoon. He took a 12-game hitting streak into the weekend.
Melone hit a grand slam and Jon Fisher (Plymouth Whitemarsh) tossed eight solid innings to lift West Chester to a 9-4 victory over North Georgia in the opening game of the NCAA D2 National Championships in Grand Prairie, Texas, on Saturday. Melone’s grand slam in the bottom of the third inning erased a 3-0 deficit. The Golden Rams plated five runs in the seventh to break open the one-run game. Fisher threw eight strong innings, settling down after giving North Georgia three runs in the second. Fisher allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three. West Chester (41-11) advances into the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament and will play Lindenwood (Mo.) on Monday at 8 p.m. In last Monday’s 12-7 win over Winston-Salem State in the title game of the Atlantic Regional Tournament, Melone was 5-for-5 with four RBIs. Robert Knox (Upper Moreland) was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Kevin Barron (Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-5 with his fourth home run of the season in Campbell’s 4-3 loss to Winthrop in 10 innings in the opening round game of the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship on Thursday. In Campbell’s 6-5 loss to High Point in an elimination game later that day, Barron was 2-for-3.
Delaware Valley University senior Kyle Wenger (Souderton) has been named to the D3baseball.com All-Mid-
Atlantic Region Team for the third time in his standout career. The 2017 honor named Wenger to the third team. A first-team honoree in both 2014 and 2015, he bounced back from an injury that limited him to just 20 games as a junior. He batted .431 with a .651 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage. Wenger racked up 47 hits, including 10 doubles, four triples and two home runs. He scored 37 runs and drove in 21 while also stealing 14 bases and committing just two errors in 100 attempts. He had 15 multiple-hit games and scored two or more runs in 14 of the 33 contests. Wenger finished as DelVal’s all-time leader with a career batting average of .448 (185 hits in 413 at-bats). He was also the career leader in triples (16), third in hits (185), third in stolen bases (63), fourth in doubles (37), fourth in runs scored (127), tied for seventh in home runs (13) and eighth in RBIs (101).
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Dave Tatoian (Pennridge) earned accolades from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and was named to its ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-Region First Team. He also was named to the NCAA Division III All-America Second Team. Tatoian, a first-team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference selection this season, led the CSAC in RBIs (56), homers (9), extra-base hits (26) and was second in doubles (15), third in slugging (.695) while batting .391 in 40 games this season. He collected his 100th career hit this season while his 56 RBIs and nine home runs were third best in a single season in program history. His seven RBIs in a win at Albright on April 5 were third most in a single game. He also added 16 multi-hit and 13 multi-RBI games while having a team-best 12-game hitting streak for the Griffins.
Widener senior Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
FOOTBALL
Widener senior Steve Gozur (North Penn) and sophomore Vince Char (William Tennent) were named to the CoSIDA District IV Academic All-District Team.
MEN’S GOLF
Millersville senior Rodney Anders (Souderton) was named to the Division II Ping All-Region Atlantic Team. Anders played in nine out of 10 tournaments for the Marauders. He tied for first at the Mercyhurst Invitational while finishing tied for third at the PSAC Championships. Anders competed for Millersville in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional tournament earlier this month where he tied for 35th.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Temple senior Brenda McDermott (North Penn), who earned All-Region Second Team
and All-BIG EAST First Team honors, was selected to play in the IWLCA North/South Senior All-Star Game on Saturday, June 3. A two-time BIG EAST First Team honoree, McDermott led the Owls in both goals (42) and assists (32) for 74 total points this season. Her 32 assists rank second all-time in a single season in program history, while her 54 career assists rank ninth all-time. McDermott was named BIG EAST Attacker of the Week on Feb. 14 after a season-opening win at Rutgers. She recorded eight hat tricks, including six straight from March 25 to April 15. McDermott tallied six assists in an 18-16 win vs. Monmouth on Feb. 15, ranking as the second most in a single game in program history. She tied her career high with five goals in the final game of the season against number two Florida in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. After overcoming years of injuries to become a standout for the Owls, McDermott was named Temple’s NovaCare Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year at the annual Celebration of Champions on April. 30.
East Stroudsburg senior Lauren Green (North Penn) has been selected to participate in the 2017 IWLCA Division II North-South Senior All-Star Game. The North Penn graduate had 25 goals and a team-high 34 assists as a senior, ranking second on the team with 59 points. Her 34 assists are third most in a single season in school history. She had 94 career goals and 48 assists, ranking ninth at ESU, for 142 points. She was a four-year starter, making 61 starts. The IWLCA senior all-star games will be played on Saturday, June 3, at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. The Division II game will be play at 1245. p.m.
University of Georgia junior Julie Norek (Central Bucks East) was named to the 2017 UGA Division One all-tournament team. Georgia finished in third place after capturing the national club team title in 2016. Norek had four goals in the team's opening round win over San Diego Sate and had two goals against Colorado State. In a semifinal loss to Pitt, Noreck had three goals and added one in Georgia's playback win for third place. For the second consecutive year, Norek earned first team UGA All-American recognition.
SOFTBALL
Brown University senior Julia Schoenewald (Central Bucks East) was the recipient of
the Bessie H. Rudd Award. This award is presented to the female varsity athlete who displays enthusiasm, spirit and leadership and is devoted to the quality of life at Brown and the surrounding community throughout the year. The award is named in honor of Bessie H. Rudd, the former Director of Physical Education at Pembroke College from 1930-1961, in honor of her leadership in the development of quality athletic programs for all women.
Schoenewald has left an indelible mark on the Brown community through her passion for life and vibrant personality that brings out the best in others. Her coaches and teammates treat her with the highest respect and turn to her as a trusted leader and confidant. A three-year captain, Schoenewald served as one of the four seniors to carry the Class of 2017 banner through the VanWickle Gates at commencement. Schoenewald acts in a variety of roles on campus, including as a Meiklejohn Peer Advisor.
Fordham senior Lauren Quense (Neshaminy) was selected to the ECAC Division One All-Stars first team after earning First Team All-Region for the Mid-Atlantic area. Quense stepped up as a junior to take the place of an injured Rachel Gillen and kept that momentum going into her senior campaign, beginning the year with a 1-0 shutout victory over #21 Baylor and winning five of the first six Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week awards with outstanding preseason performances. The senior set new career highs across the board with 22 wins, a 2.49 ERA, 37 starts and 18 complete games, striking out 126 over 208.1 frames, and threw the program’s 14th no-hitter with five hitless innings against Bryant in mid-February. The Neshaminy graduate finishes her four-year career at Fordham within the top five of several all-time pitching categories, and elsewhere in the top 10 of two others. For her efforts, Quense was named A-10 Co-Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-Conference, NFCA First Team all-Region and CoSIDA Academic Al-District.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Kutztown University’s Brandon Raguz (Central Bucks South) capped his junior season with an All-America
performance on the national stage Thursday. He cleared his first two heights on the pole vault at the NCAA National Championships to finish in 12th place for All-American Second Team honors at a height of 16-3.25. This was Raguz’s first appearance at nationals. He was the final competitor to earn All-America honors. He cleared the first height of 15-9.25 on his second attempt. He went on to clear two straight bars, becoming the first competitor to clear 16-3.25 to move on to the third round. Clearing the height on his first attempt ultimately locked him into the 12th and final All-America spot. Raguz attempted a potential personal best height of 16-7.25 in the third round but did not clear on his three attempts.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Moravian senior Lauren Suelke (Quakertown) was named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Women’s Track/Cross Country Team for NCAA
Division III schools in District IV. To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 grade point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. By making the All-District First Team, Suelke is now forwarded onto the national ballot to try for CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades. Suelke finished her degree in Political Science and Economics earlier this month, and she has a 3.95 GPA entering her final semester. This spring, Suelke was the runner-up in the triple jump at the Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships with a distance of 10.30 meters (33-9.5). She was the 2014 Landmark Outdoor Rookie of the Year after runner-up finishes in high jump, long jump and triple jump and the 2014 Landmark Indoor Co-Field Athlete of the Year after winning long jump. Suelke was 2015 runner-up in long jump outdoors, and she missed the 2016 season while studying abroad.
Off the field, Suelke is a four-time member of the Landmark Conference Academic Roll, twice in the spring for outdoors and twice in the winter for indoors, and she is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics and Business Honor Society and Pre Law Club, serving as president in 2015. Suelke has made the Dean’s List seven times.
Moravian junior Casie Cronk (Quakertown) earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the high jump. The Quakertown graduate was the runner-up at the ECAC Division III Championships with a season-best clearance of 1.64 meters (5-4.25). For a student-athlete to earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be ranked in the top five of an individual event in the region according to the final Track & Field Results Reporting System data or be part of a top three relay team. Moravian is part of the Mideast Region.
