BASEBALL
West Chester University senior Dylan Tice (Pennridge) was drafted in the 36th round of the 2015 MLB Entry Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday afternoon. Tice, the 1,091st pick of the draft, became the 30th former West Chester baseball player to be drafted in the 50-year history of the entry draft. He is the third in the last four years and first since Joe Gunkel was taken in the 18th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2013. Tice will join Gunkel, Joey Wendle and Frank Gailey as former West Chester players currently active in the minor leagues when he reports to the St. Louis Cardinals. An honorable mention All-America pick by the American Baseball Coaches’ Association (ABCA), Tice tied for 13th in the nation in hitting with a .433 batting average. He had 65 hits, including 16 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs while knocking in 34 runs and scoring 59 times. He authored an .827 slugging percentage and a .548 on-base percentage as well. He only struck out seven times on the season, which ranks him tied for 11th in Division II. Tice, a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award handed out to the Division II national player of the year, was also named All-Atlantic Region by both the American Baseball Coaches’ Association (ABCA) and the NCBWA while also earning first team All-PSAC honors along with PSAC East athlete of the year. He helped lead West Chester (27-15) to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. His .433 batting average is the highest single season mark since 1996 and the fourth best in school history. His .827 slugging percentage is .001 off the school record held by Tom Nuneviller in 1990. His .548 on-base percentage is also the best single-season effort since 1996 and the third best mark in school history. Tice’s 11 home runs are tied for seventh best in a single season and just two shy of the school’s record.
University of Maryland junior Jake Drossner (Council Rock North) was drafted in the 10th round (pick 301) and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers. He will forgo his senior year to go pro. The CR North graduate is headed to Helena, Montana, to play for Milwaukee’s Rookie League affiliate. The Brewers do not have a Short Season Single A affiliate, which is where most college draft picks end up.
Delaware Valley University sophomore centerfielder Kyle Wenger (Souderton) was named
to the ECAC Division III South All-Star second team. It is another accolade for Wenger, who was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year and a first team outfielder. He also earned a spot on the D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team. Wenger started all 36 games for the Aggies and batted .432 while leading the team in slugging percentage (.712), on-base percentage (.517), hits (51), runs scored (36), RBIs (29), stolen bases (22), doubles (8), triples (5) and home runs (5). He had at least one hit in all but four games and had 15 multiple-hit contests. He scored two or more runs nine times and knocked in multiple runs on seven occasions.
Widener sophomore outfielder Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) was named to the 2015 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Baseball Team. A Capital One Academic All-District First Team selection, McDonough ended his sophomore campaign with a 3.93 GPA as an accounting major. He earned first team All-Commonwealth after leading the Commonwealth with 26 stolen bases and ranking third in the league in doubles. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-area team, a student-athlete must have achieved sophomore status and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Chestnut Hill junior Zachary Crim (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team. In order to be named to the CACC Spring All-Academic Team, recipients must have participated in a spring, CACC-sponsored championship sport and must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The nominee must have been a student-athlete at their current school for at least two years and must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through the preceding semester.
SOFTBALL
Sophomore Brooke Labs (Pennridge) became the first Marywood University softball player in program history to
earn ECAC Division III South All-Star first team honors. Labs, who also earned second team NFCA All-Region squad, was named to the South Region team as a third baseman. Last year, Labs earned second team All-ECAC honors. The sophomore third baseman led the Pacers in the regular season with a .443 batting average and currently ranks first in the country in doubles per game. Labs had 20 doubles on the year, setting a new Marywood single season mark. She started and played in all 33 regular season games and ranked first on the team in runs scored (31), hits (47), doubles (20), and triples (two). In the field, Labs had 40 putouts, 74 assists and just 11 errors at the hot corner for a .912 fielding percentage.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Freshman Ross Wilson (Council Rock North) will represent the University of Pennsylvania at the USA Junior Championships June 25-28.
Holy Family junior Matthew French (Bensalem) was named to the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Spring All-Academic team. Student-athletes must have participated in a CACC sport in the spring and must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. They also must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through the fall semester of 2014.
Widener senior Amber Char (William Tennent) was named to the 2015 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Track and Field team. Char finished her Widener career with a 3.91 GPA as a biology major. She also was named to the Academic All-Area team. She earned first team All-MAC in the pole vault at the 2015 Indoor Championships and went on to win the event at the MAC Outdoor Championships. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Area team, a student-athlete must have achieved sophomore status and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
