BASEBALL
West Chester University junior Jared Melone (North Penn) was named a 2018 NCAA Division II First Team All-
American by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings. The infielder is the fourth first team All-American selection in West Chester baseball history and the first since Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Joey Wendle received the honor in 2012. The 2018 ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic Position Player of the Year, Melone filled the infield/flex position and is one of just two PSAC athletes to earn first team honors. Melone’s historic selection adds to an already eye-popping 2018 resume that features second team All-America nods from both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) along with four Player/Athlete of the Year accolades overall, including the 2018 ECAC Player of the Year. Melone ended his junior season leading NCAA DII with a .469 batting average, which stands as the second highest in program history. Starting and playing in all 48 games in 2018, Melone led the team and paced the PSAC with 69 RBIs, 1.44 RBIs per game, and 84 total hits. Off the field, Melone will look to cap his junior season with a major academic award after earning a spot on the Academic All-America ballot following his selection to the 2018 COSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District Two squad earlier this month.

He was the only freshman named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team. McCarty continues to be a trailblazer for the Nittany Lions as the program’s first ever All-American in baseball landing on the second team.
