BASEBALL
Robert Knox (Upper Moreland) hit a leadoff home run in No. 6 West Chester’s 5-2 win over UC San Diego on Sunday as the Golden Rams captured the 2017 Division II National Championship. The Rams rolled to four straight wins en route to the title in Grand Prairie, Texas. In Thursday’s 1-0 semifinal win over second-ranked Colorado Mesa, Knox singled home the game’s only run in the top of the third inning. In last Monday’s 5-2 win over No. 20 Lindenwood, sophomore Jared Melone (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Arcadia junior Connor Laigaie (Council Rock South) and sophomore Nick Ponente (Council Rock South) were named to the 2017 MAC Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. The winter/spring academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport during the winter and spring seasons and registered a spring term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher.
Delaware Valley University’s Trevor Dalton (Pennridge), Jeremy Hefele (William Tennent) and Joe McGlade (Wissahickon) were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) 2016-17 Winter and Spring Academic Honor Rolls. The honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport and register a term/semester grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher in their primary semester of competition.

The winter/spring academic honor roll is comprised of student-athletes who compete in a varsity level sport during the winter and spring seasons and registered a spring term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg University junior Alex Bella (Quakertown) was named to the 2017 Academic All-District 2 Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country Team for Division II athletics. Balla, at the time of his nomination in April, boasted a 3.71 cumulative grade point average as a dual major in marketing and entrepreneurship. Through
the completion of the spring semester, he improved to a cumulative GPA of 3.73. The Academic All-District teams are nominated and voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. The purpose of the program is to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Balla competes year round in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. He finished second in the 10K and fifth in the 5K at the 2017 PSAC Outdoor Championships. Indoors, Balla placed fourth in the 5K and eighth in the 3K at the conference championships. He earned All-PSAC first team honors in cross country as well as U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors as SU’s No. 2 runner. He placed seventh at the PSAC Championships, completing the 8K in 26:05 before finishing third at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships – running the 10K in 32:51. The 2016 USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree finished 78th overall at the NCAA Championships, helping the Raiders place 16th as a team. Through three seasons, Balla has earned two All-PSAC and All-Region designations in cross country while combining for 10 PSAC place-winning performances spanning the indoor and outdoor track and field campaign.
