MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State junior Connor Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 10th at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday at University Park. The Nittany Lions finished third as a team.
La Salle junior Fran Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) was the first collegiate finisher at the Friends Big 5 Invitational on Friday, finishing in third place behind only two unattached runners. The junior finished in 19:05.2 on the 6k course to score one point for the team and finish 2.4 seconds ahead of the nearest runner. Teammate Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) finished 45th with a time of 20:20.7.
Senior Alex Izewski (Central Bucks East) led a group of three strong finishers for Temple cross country at the Big 5 Invitational on Friday evening at Belmont Plateau. The CB East grad placed fifth in a field of over 70 runners from the city schools, clocking a time of 19:13.5 on the 6K course.
Elizabethtown’s Sam Brooks (Wissahickon) was seventh with a time of 21:58.88 at Saturday’s double dual meet against Gwynedd Mercy. Elizabethtown defeated Gwynedd (15-50) and the alumni team (16-46).
Penn State Abington’s Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) finished seventh overall with a time of 27:36 at the Cougar Classic hosted by Misericorida University on Saturday. Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) was 46th with a time of 30:14, and Minaam Ahmed (Pennsbury) finished 77th overall with a time of 33:18. The Nittany Lions finished eighth out of 15 participating teams.
Ursinus freshman Evan Cirafesi (Upper Merion) posted a time of 30:13 at the Mustang Stampede hosted by Johns Hopkins/Stevenson on Saturday.
James Wilson (Central Bucks South) was the second runner to cross the finish line and was seventh overall at the Flatlander Quad on Saturday, posting a time of 16:16. Tim Silverthorn (Council Rock South) was 30th in 17:20 with Alex Moran (Pennridge) taking 34th in 18:20. Bloomsburg finished second in the quad meet.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) won the individual title at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday

La Salle freshman Kaitlin Poiesz (Central Bucks South) was the first Explorer to cross the finish line at the Friends Big 5 Cross Country Invitational on Friday at Belmont Plateau, finishing in sixth place with a time of 14:25.1, just 13.4 seconds off the winner.
Messiah’s Natalie Ross (Souderton) and Emma Barbagallo (Council Rock North) posted times of 25:18.14 and 25:25.83 respectively at the Misericordia Cougar Classic on Saturday. Messiah finished second as a team.
Sophomore Emily Makara (Council Rock South) was the second Gwynedd Mercy runner to cross the finish line at the Blue Jay Challenge at Elizabethtown College Saturday, posting a time of 18:49.76. Sophomore Brittany Finn (Upper Moreland) was the third Gwynedd runner with a time of 19:06.70.
Elizabethtown’s Kelsey Brady (Council Rock South) finished sixth in Saturday’s double dual meet against Gwynedd Mercy and the alumni. Elizabethtown defeated Gwynedd Mercy 15-50 with the alums the overall winner (19-43).
Freshman Riley Engel (Council Rock North) was the top finisher for Ursinus at the Mustang Stampede hosted by Stevenson/Johns Hopkins on Saturday, posting a time of 24:54 to finish 27th overall. Junior Sam Innes (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 28:32.
Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) captured first place and the Bloomsburg University squad took the first four spots to easily win the Flatlander Quad at Mansfield University on Saturday. Dodds, a returning All-American, paced the field of 46 runners on the 5k course, finishing in 17:52.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) scored her first two goals of the season in fifth-ranked Stanford’s 7-0 win against St. Louis on Saturday.
Junior defender Dana Adamson (Central Bucks South) connected for a goal in Widener’s 3-0 win over Neumann University on Wednesday.
Sophomore Rachael Mueller (William Tennent) tipped in a goal in Temple’s 7-4 loss at No. 18 Delaware on Friday night.
Freshman Abby Alexis (Neshaminy) scored a goal in St. Joseph’s 7-3 loss to Penn on Friday.
Lock Haven senior Rachel Valentine (Souderton) was named the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. Valentine was the difference in a 1-0 win at Cornell. Her team-leading third goal of the season 7:38 into overtime propelled Lock Haven to a 1-0 win.
Valentine scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in Lock Haven’s 3-1 win at Colgate on Saturday.
Freshman Shelby Landes (Souderton) collected 10 saves in No. 17 Messiah’s 1-0 loss to No. 2 Salisbury on Saturday. Salisbury outshot Messiah 18-1 in the contest.
Senior forward Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored with 7:12 remaining in the first overtime to reach the
100-point milestone in her career and lift Delaware Valley to a 2-1 non-conference win over St. Mary’s College (Md.) on Saturday. The Tennent graduate became just the third player in program history to reach the century mark in points. Prichett has 40 goals and 20 assists in her career, including three tallies and five assists for 11 points this season.
Junior Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) had a pair of assists in Lehigh University’s 4-2 loss to Towson on Sunday. In Friday’s 3-1 loss at Columbia, junior Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) scored, using a Tofig assist.
Rachel Gorman (Central Bucks South) contributed an assist in Lebanon Valley’s 4-2 loss to Haverford on Saturday.
Freshman Ashley Laskowitz (Wissahickon) scored a pair of goals in Miami University’s 2-0 win over Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Emily Cliggett (Central Bucks South) scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner in Villanova’s 5-2 loss to Rutgers on Friday.
Freshman Katherine McVeagh (Springfield) scored a second-half goal in the University of Scranton’s 3-1 win over King’s on Sunday morning.
Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed her second assist of the year in Quinnipiac’s 2-1 loss to Lafayette on Sunday. The PW graduate also had an assist in Quinnipiac’s 2-1 win over Yale last Sunday.
Sophomore Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) turned a pass from teammate Sarah Yerk (Pennridge) into a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Junior Steve Gozur (North Penn) had a team high eight tackles – four solo – in Widener’s 43-20 win over King’s College on Saturday. He was credited with one-and-a-half sacks.
Junior quarterback Matt Johns (Central Bucks South) completed 26-of-38 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns in the University of Virginia’s 34-27 loss to No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday. He also had a four-yard touchdown run.
Senior Josh Cook (North Penn) led the defense with eight tackles – 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks – in Lycoming’s 38-14 loss to Stevenson on Saturday.
Senior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a pair of field goals and junior running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished with a game-high 127 yards rushing on 27 carries and also had 35 yards receiving in Ursinus College’s 22-15 loss to Gettysburg on Saturday. Kelly, who had a one-yard touchdown run, passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career. Boyer connected on field goals of 43 and 32 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Darius Willis (Norristown), who entered Saturday’s game with just four tackles in 11 career games, had seven tackles – including 1.5 for a loss – in Shippensburg’s 20-13 road win over Edinboro. Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) had five catches for 45 yards.
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) tallied nine tackles in Kutztown’s 34-33 win over IUP on Saturday in a contest that saw KU rally from 21 points down for the win. A key play was a 35-yard extra point by sophomore kicker Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem) that gave KU its 34-33 lead. The extra point was pushed back after a 15-yard penalty for sideline interference.
Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) had six tackles, including two for a loss, and also forced a pair of fumbles in West Chester’s 37-35 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday. He also was credited with a pair of quarterback hurries.
Rasheed Johnson (Norristown) had a team high 19 tackles, including seven solo, in Millersville’s 27-21 loss to Clarion on Thursday evening. Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) averaged 38.8 yards on six punts for the Marauders.
MEN’S SOCCER
Penn State senior Kyle MacDonald (North Penn) set up a goal in Penn State’s 2-0 win over James Madison
University on Tuesday. The win is just the second time in series history that the Nittany Lions have defeated the Dukes and the first time since 1998. Freshman Kevin McKenna (North Penn) was credited with an assist in Widener’s 3-0 win over Southern Virginia on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Swarthmore, McKenna notched his first collegiate goal. The freshman forward connected on a shot from 20 yards out late in the contest.
Senior Mike Camacho (Harry S Truman) contributed a goal and assist in Cabrini’s 2-1 win over Ursinus College on Saturday, upping the team’s record to 4-0-1. In Wednesday’s 4-3 winner over DeSales, Camacho was credited with an assist.
Junior Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) turned away seven shots in Drexel’s 1-0 loss to No. 7 Washington on Monday night. In a solid all-around effort, Afflerbach’s best play of the night did not show up in a box score. It came in the 52nd minute with the Dragons trailing by a goal when he thwarted a breakaway by David Coly, meeting Coly 10 yards out of the goal mouth. Afflerbach slid and prevented Coly from even getting off a shot as he swiped the ball away cleanly to keep Drexel within a goal.
Freshman midfielder Alex Kardos (Pennsbury) scored in the 87th minute in East Stroudsburg’s 6-2 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday.
Richard Domico (Neshaminy) scored his third goal in as many games in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Rosemont on Tuesday.
Junior Ben Marks (Central Bucks East) sent a free kick into the upper left corner of the net in the 48th minute, and Lafayette went on to play to a 1-1 draw in 110 minutes of action at Bryant on Sunday afternoon. Marks’ tally marks his third straight game with a point for the Maroon and White in four games this season. He leads the Leopards offensively with a goal and three assists for five points on the year. His mark Sunday helped keep Lafayette undefeated with a 2-0-2 overall record.
The College of New Jersey junior goalkeeper Jake Nesteruk (Central Bucks East) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. The CB East graduate registered three shutouts to open the 2015 campaign. He opened the season with a 5-0 win over York College (NY) and blanked both Staten Island and Roanoke 2-0 in the Drew Fall Festival. Nesteruk recorded one save apiece in the first two games before turning away five shots while facing 14 against Roanoke. He leads the NJAC in three categories – goals against average, save percentage and shutouts – after the first week of play.
Nesteruk faced 24 shots and registered six saves in The College of New Jersey’s 3-3 tie with Johns Hopkins on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology, Nesteruk made three saves for his fourth win of the season.
Brian Kilcoyne (Bensalem) contributed assists on both goals in No. 18 Bloomsburg’s 2-1 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. It was the Huskies first ever win over the Lakers in 13 career meetings.
Junior midfielder Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 2-1 loss to Cabrini on Saturday.
Devon Memos (Wissahickon) contributed an assist in Philadelphia University’s 5-1 win over Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday.
Junior Tyler Whitehead (Upper Dublin) was credited with an assist in Shippensburg’s 2-1 win over Holy Family on Wednesday.
Brian Schaefer (Upper Dublin) scored his first goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 29th minute of West Chester’s 3-2 double overtime loss to Mercyhurst on Friday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) set up the first goal in No. 7 Penn State’s 2-0 win over No. 2 Stanford in front of 1,436 fans at Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif., Friday night. The goal broke Stanford’s scoreless streak of roughly 370 minutes. Stanford held a 16-4 advantage in shots.
Lexi Brown (Neshaminy) scored a goal in the 82nd minute in West Chester’s 2-1 loss to No. 19 Gannon on Saturday.
Holy Family freshman Brianna Rock (Bensalem) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. Holy Family opened the 2015 season on the road at preseason favorite and crosstown rival Philadelphia University. The Tigers came away with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Rock’s first collegiate goal. With the game deadlocked 0-0, Rock converted a shot from 18 yards out after receiving a centering pass from the right side. Rock’s goal gave Holy Family a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute and eventual victory.
Senior Erin Lafferty (Upper Dublin) took a free kick that set up a goal in Temple’s 4-0 win over New Hampshire on Friday.
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) netted three goals and also had an assist in Cedarville’s 8-1 rout of Ohio Valley in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Ursinus junior midfielder Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) was named the Centennial Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. Jasinski had two goals in the opening win over York (Pa.) and then had a goal in each game of the Profs Soccer Classic hosted by Rowan. She also had two assists during the week.
Senior defender Kelsey Shafer (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a cross to set up the game-winning goal in Ursinus College’s 1-0 win over Moravian on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Arcadia, Shafer contributed an assist.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Amanda Shulski (Neshaminy) earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in second singles in Penn State Abington’s 9-0 win over Rosemont. She was part of a second doubles team that earned an 8-0 win.
West Chester junior Claire Uhle (Wissahickon) was part of a doubles team that won both of its matches Saturday to reach the semifinals of the PSAC Championships hosted by Bloomsburg University. Uhle and Maddy Shaak defeated their counterparts from Edinboro 8-0 in the first round and followed that with an 8-5 win over Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Eryn Brady (Upper Merion) had a team high 13 kills and a .370 attack percentage in 27 attempts in York College’s 3-0 win over Lycoming on opening day of the 22nd Annual Warrior Tip Off Classic hosted by Lycoming College on Friday. She also had four digs and a block assist. In York’s 3-2 win over Pitt-Bradford later in the day, Brady had eight kills, a solo block and two block assists. In Wednesday’s 3-1 non-conference victory over Gettysburg, Brady registered 15 kills while hitting .306 for the match. She added two assists and a pair of block assists in the win.
Freshman Candyce Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded 14 digs in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss to American International on Saturday on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational. In Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Franklin Pierce later in the day, Riley recorded double-digit digs with 12 to go along with four kills. In Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Pace on Friday, freshman Jaime Bonner (William Tennent) had five kills, and Riley finished with a season high 21 digs. In Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to West Chester on Tuesday, Riley led the team with nine digs.
Taylor Gasperi (Harry S Truman) had four kills in Rosemont’s 3-0 loss to Bryn Mawr on Thursday.
Senior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) contributed a double-double with 28 assists and 16 digs in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over MIT to open the MIT Invitational on Friday. Freshman Ashley Shannon (Upper Merion) had 10 digs. In Friday’s nightcap, a 3-0 sweep of Wellesley, Koenig had 33 assists. In Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Springfield College, Koenig paired 32 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Cabrini rallied to defeat Bates 3-1 later in the day with Koenig contributing 47 assists.
Liz Gassman (Abington) had five kills and six block assists in Marist’s 3-1 win over Bucknell on Saturday to cap a 3-0 run through the Volley in the Valley. Earlier in the day, in Marist’s 3-0 win over La Salle, Gassman had one kills and five block assists. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Bryant, Gassman had seven kills and four block assists. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Army, the Abington graduate had four kills and four block assists.
Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) recorded a career high 18 kills in Eastern University’s 3-1 loss to third-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday at the UMass Boston Beacon Invitational.
Melanie Phifer (Upper Dublin) had four aces in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 win over Penn State Altoona on Friday.
Senior Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had nine kills and two blocks in Kutztown’s 3-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday morning in the Kutztown Classic. In KU’s 3-1 loss to Philadelphia University later in the day, Stringer had eight kills and five blocks. Freshman Niki Carpenter (Upper Merion) recorded a season high five blocks. In Friday’s 3-2 loss to NYIT, Stringer had a team high 13 kills and tied her career high with nine blocks.
Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) had a pair of aces in Chestnut Hill’s 3-2 loss to American International College on Friday at the Wildcat Regional Invitational.
