MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State sophomore Conner Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 26.33 on the 5.2-mile course to finish 18th at the 2014 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational Saturday. The Nittany Lions captured the team title.
Penn State Abington junior Alex Kane (Central Bucks East) was named the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second straight week. The junior speedster won Abington’s annual invitational for the third straight year and set a new personal course record in the process, besting the rest of the 60-runner field with a time of 29:13 in the eight-kilometer event. He was ahead of the pack for nearly the entire race before beating out the second place finisher by nearly two minutes. The performance helped the Nittany Lions also capture the team title out of the 10-team field, which included five other NEAC member schools.
Kane was the top finisher at the 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships course at Gallaudet University on Saturday, beating 43 runners with a time of 27:12.23. Senior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) completed the 8-kilometer course for a ninth place finish in 29:30.35. Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) completed the course in 30:49.02 for the 19th place spot. The men’s team finished third out of six teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State junior Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) posted a time of 21:33 to finish ninth at the 2014 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Saturday. No. 9 Penn State captured the team title.
West Chester freshman Meghan Iatarola (Central Bucks East) raced to a 20th place finish in her first collegiate event ever, crossing the finish line in 24:39 at the Division II/III Challenge Cross Country Invitational hosted by Kutztown University. West Chester finished second as a team.
Kutztown fifth-year senior Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) wrapped up the KU point scorers at the annual DII/III Challenge on Saturday, finishing 43rd with a time of 25:17. Elizabeth McLaughlin (Upper Dublin) finished 50th. KU finished fifth as a team.
James Madison University junior Kathleen Stewart (Council Rock South) led the charge for JMU with a seventh place finish in the 58-person field after she completed the 5,200-meter course with a time of 18:36.40 at the 2014 JMU Invitational Saturday. The mark was 40 seconds fater than her previous personal record in the 5K (19:16.4) and was the 10th-fastest time in the event's history. Freshman Erin Gray (Pennsbury) placed 24th in her first collegiate race as she clocked a time of 20:06.40. JMU finished second as a team.
Temple freshman Louise Huuki (Central Bucks East) posted a time of 16:27.2 and placed 43rd at the Big 5 Invitational on Belmont Plateau on Friday. Sophomore Megan Schneider (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 48th in
17:06.2.
Bloomsburg senior Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) finished third overall at the Slippery Rock 125th Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 23:25.72. Dodds is the defending PSAC track and field champion at 10 kilometers. Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) was Bloomsburg’s fifth finisher in 22nd place with a time of 24:50. Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) was 56th with a time of 26:55.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sophomore Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) scored a career-high two goals to propel Lehigh to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Towson on Sunday afternoon. Tofig – who was on the left post – deflected a pass into the cage in OT to propel the Mountain Hawks to the win.
Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored 2:03 into the second overtime to propel Delaware Valley to a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Wesley College on Thursday.
Villanova senior back Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Sept. 7. The senior captain tallied her first goal and assist during the
week in three starts while anchoring the back line for the Wildcats in wins over Missouri State and Siena. In the three contests, Villanova went 2-1 while outscoring its opponents 8-6. The Wildcats’ defense also limited its opponents to a .432 on-goal percentage with only 19 on goal in 44 total shots. Harding notched her first goal in the Wildcats’ 4-2 loss at Fairfield for her first points. She tallied an assist in a 2-1 win at Siena. This is Harding’s second BIG EAST Honor Roll award after winning in the final week of the 2013 season. Last year, Harding started 17 contests with eight goals and three assists to lead the team with 19 points on her way to being named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Harding and teammate Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) both contributed assists in Villanova’s 5-2 loss to Columbia on Saturday.
Sophomore goalie Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) had four saves in The College of New Jersey’s 7-1 win over Cabrini on Tuesday. Schluupp is 4-0 on the season.
Junior Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored both goals in Quinnipiac’s 2-0 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday. It was the PW grad’s first multi-goal game. Her first goal, scored 1:13 into the first half, was the fastest goal for Quinnipiac since Sept. 17, 2008, and was the fastest in a road game in the program’s Division I era (since 1998).
Junior Alayna Brown (Souderton) scored an unassisted goal in No. 4 West Chester’s 5-3 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 6-1 win over Lindenwood, Brown contributed a goal.
Senior forward Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Yale’s 3-2 win over Sacred Heart on Monday night.
Junior Katie O’Neil (Council Rock North) scored the game-winning goal in Gwynedd Mercey’s 2-1 win over Alvernia on Saturday.
Sophomore Alyssa Buckley (Springfield) scored a goal in the 60th minute in Widener’s 3-1 win over Keystone on Saturday.
Freshman Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in the 25th minute of Kutztown’s 6-3 win over Newberry College on Friday.
FOOTBALL

Needhammer ran for 112 yards on 29 carries and scored his 30th career touchdown in No. 23 Lycoming’s 26-0 win over Albright on Saturday. With the touchdown, Needhammer broke the school record of 29 set by Tim Deasey (1998-2001). It is the 12th time in his career that Needhammer has rushed for over 100 yards, three shy of the school record of 15 set by Brian Thompson (1995-98). He is now tied for second with Josh Kleinfelter (2007-10). Senior John Sibel (Pennsbury) caught six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore running back Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) ran for 85 yards and a touchdown in Ursinus College’s 31-14 win over Gettysburg on Saturday. Junior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 20-yard field goal.
Senior defensive end Brandon Gattelli (Bensalem) had a fumble recovery in East Stroudsburg’s 56-24 loss to Slippery Rock on Saturday.
Sophmore Steve Gozur (North Penn) delivered a sack that led to a safety in Widener’s 45-3 rout of reigning Middle Atlantic Conference champion Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
Junior defensive end Andrew Cohen (Council Rock South) finished with a team-high seven tackles, including one sack, in No. 9 West Chester’s 38-14 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) had three receptions for 41 yards.
Evan Stahl (Central Bucks South) connected on a 39-yard field goal in Millersville’s 55-16 loss to Clarion on Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Cabrini freshman Clay Anders (Souderton) shot an 85 in the Moravian College Fall Invitational. Cabrini finished seventh out of 17 teams with a team score of 328.
West Chester senior Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) finished 16th overall, carding a 76 on Monday at the Hal Hansen Invitational at the Clarion Oaks Golf Club. West Chester finished fifth overall. Slawter carded a 75 in round one.
Millersville junior Rodney Anders (Souderton) shot a career-best 4-over par 76 to move up to 28th place at the Hal Hansen Invitational last Monday. Millersville was in seventh place after the second round. In the opening round, Anders posted a 78.
MEN’S SOCCER
Junior Ryan Smith (Hatboro-Horsham) scored the game-winning goal off of a corner kick in Scranton’s 2-0 win on Saturday. It was Smith’s first goal of the season. The win upped Scranton’s record to 4-1.
Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) came up with four saves in Drexel’s 0-0 tie at Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.
Freshman Nicholas Tucci (Neshaminy) recorded his first collegiate goal in West Chester’s 2-1 loss to Wilmington (Del.) on Friday. In last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Pfeiffer, Brian Schaefer (Upper Dublin) contributed an assist.
Sophomore James Karsor (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Cairn University’s 7-1 win over Valley Forge Christian College on Wednesday.
Mike Robinson (North Penn) was part of a defensive line that allowed just two shots in No. 16 Penn State’s 1-0 upset of No. 11 Indiana on Saturday night. On a corner kick to the top of the box, teammate Kyle MacDonald (North Penn) dummied to allow teammate Mason Klerks a chance on the ball. Klerks, a sophomore defender, sent a rocket from 18 yards out for the game winner.
Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) recorded two saves in Penn State Abington’s 0-0 tie with SUNYIT on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-2 overtime tie against Penn State Berks, Saint-Pol came up with two big saves in the extra frames to preserve the tie.
Jon Nazon (North Penn) scored on a free kick to give Eastern a 1-0 lead on its way to a 2-0 win over Neumann University on Saturday.
Sophmore Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) knocked in two goals on six shots for his first multi-goal game of his career in Ursinus College’s 5-1 win over Rosemont on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-1 tie with Marywood, Molyneaux scored his team’s lone goal with 62:26 remaining on a penalty kick.
The College of New Jersey sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Nasteruk (Central Bucks East) was honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference for his performance during the week ending Sept. 7 when he was named NJAC Defensive Player of the Week. The CB East grad posted a pair of shutout wins in two games played for the Lions as they defeated York College (NY) 5-0 and Brooklyn College (4-0). Nasteruk stopped all four shots he faced. In Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology, Nasteruk stopped both Duck shots he faced.
Matt Robinson (North Penn) scored the game’s first goal in La Salle’s 2-2 tie with Temple on Saturday. Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) added a second goal to give the Explorers a 2-0 lead, using an assist from teammate George Breslin (William Tennent).
Widener freshman Nick Sienkiewicz (Hatboro-Horsham) scored in the 90th minute to send Wednesday’s game against Swarthmore into overtime. Widener was edged by Swarthmore 3-2 in double overtime.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Megan Gerhart (North Penn) recorded three saves in Virginia Wesleyan’s 2-0 win over Emory & Henry on Saturday. In Thursday’s 1-1 tie with Christopher Newport on Thursday, Gerhart recorded six saves. The sophomore keeper preserved the tie in overtime, diving at a kick inside the box and punching it over the crossbar to deny the Captains a go-ahead goal. In last Sunday’s 3-0 win over Averett, Gerhart was credited with two saves.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) assisted on a goal in Elizabethtown’s 5-0 win over Eastern on Saturday.
Marykate Bateman (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist in La Salle’s 2-2 tie with Princeton on Friday.
Carly Yost (North Penn) scored in the 66th minutes as No. 23 West Chester pulled out a 1-0 win against Edinboro University on Saturday afternoon. In Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Mansfield, Yost contributed a goal.
Freshman Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in No. 8 Penn State’s 3-0 win over Indiana on Sunday. In Friday’s 1-0 win over Purdue, Schafer contributed an assist on the game winner.
Megan Murphy (William Tennent) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 win over SUNYIT on Saturday.
Defender Taylor Gerstenfield (William Tennent) headed away a shot in front of her team’s goal to preserve the shutout in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 upset of No. 17 Gannon on Wednesday.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Scheidell (Council Rock North) scored a pair of first-half goals in East Stroudsburg’s 2-0 road shutout at Edinboro on Wednesday.
Paula Jurewicz (Council Rock South) scored the game winner in Temple’s 1-0 win at St. Bonaventure on Friday.
Sophomore Jeannie Jasinski (Pennridge) scored a goal in the 43rd minute to knot the score 1-1 in Ursinus College’s 4-2 loss to Albright on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Rowan, Jasinski scored her second goal of
the season.
Senior Gina Scotto (North Penn) scored her first career goal, one-timing a shot from the left side in the 77th minute in Widener’s 3-0 win at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Sophomore Honora Hegerty (Abington) earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at flight one in Penn State Abington’s 6-3 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 7-2 win over Rosemont, Hegarty earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at flight one. She also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-0 win.
Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at flight one and was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-0 win in Gwynedd Mercy’s 9-0 win over Rosemont on Friday. Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles and was part of the third doubles team that earned an 8-0 win. Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles. In Monday’s 9-0 win over Delaware Valley, Kriebel earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at flight two and also was part of the third doubles team’s 8-2 win. Michener was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-2 win. Corina Davis (North Penn) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Taylor Gasperi (Harry S. Truman) had a team high three aces in Rosemont’s 3-0 loss to Wesley College on Thursday.
Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had 11 digs in UMBC’s 3-0 loss to Coppin State on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Eastern Michigan, Griffith had 11 digs.
Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) had eight kills, 17 digs and two service aces in Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Millersville on Saturday at the Wildcat Regional Invitational at Wilmington University. In Holy Family’s 3-0 loss to Bentley, freshman Cecilia Weir (William Tennent) recorded 10 digs. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Merrimack, freshman Meanie Ingram (Upper Merion) recorded 15 kills for the second straight match to go along with a team-high 17 digs. Devyn Ingram finished with a season-high 38 assists. In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Philadelphia University, Melanie Ingram recorded a team-high 15 kills and finished with 17 digs. Devyn Ingram paced the offense with 31 set assists. She also recorded 11 digs.
Junior setter Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had six kills, 26 assists and six digs in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Wilkes on Saturday at the Swarthmore College Garnet Classic. In Cabrini’s 3-1 loss to Swarthmore, Koenig had 34 assists and three service aces.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded six kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 loss to Stevenson on Saturday.
Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) had 11 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 loss to Goucher College on Saturday.
Eastern University sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) earned the first Freedom Conference Player of the Week honor for the 2014 season. Elechko helped the Eagles to a 7-1 start this season with her 72 kills, 19 blocks and seven aces. Elechko hit at a .390 clip over those first two tournaments of the season and had four matches where she hit at least .500. She earned all-tournament honors at the Gettysburg Invitational to start the season.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had six kills in Ursinus College’s 3-0 win over Albright on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Delaware Valley, McCartney had seven kills. In the Bears’ 3-0 win over Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, McCartney had nine kills.
Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed 14 kills in the University of Connecticut’s 3-1 win over Bucknell on Saturday. The win completed a sweep of the 2014 Bucknell Tournament.
Defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) delivered five aces in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 win over Nyack College in the first of two matches in Saturday’s tri-match. She also helped key the defense. In Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 win over Saint Anselm College, Bianchini had three aces.
Junior Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had four kills in an 8-0 run and also had a kill for the 25th point of the second set of Kutztown’s 3-0 sweep of Philadelphia University on Friday. She finished with seven kills. In Monday’s 3-0 sweep of Albright, Stringer had a team-high eight kills on 10 attacks and also had a block. Freshman Cara Reilly (Pennsbury) added four kills.
Freshman Lydia Redman (Council Rock North) had seven kills in East Stroudsburg’s 3-0 win over Bowie State at the ESU Invitational last Sunday.
