Five former SOL standouts were key contributors in the Black Storm’s 14-9 win over the Outlaws in the title game of the Philadelphia Box Lacrosse Association Championship and the Frank & Doreen Menschner Cup on Thursday at Rizzo Rink in South Philadelphia. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Cairn University junior Joel Varughese (Bensalem) finished second in Friday’s season-opening Cairn Invitational, posting a time of 13:25. Trevor Hickey (Quakertown) was Cairn’s fourth runner across the finish line with a time of 14:22.
Bucknell sophomore Connor McMenamin (Souderton) finished seventh in a field of 130 runners from 10 teams at Friday’s season-opening Bison Open, posting a time of 18:47.
Gettysburg sophomore Dylan McKeever (Central Bucks East) finished 25th with a time of 20:48.6 at the Ninth Annual Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University Friday night.
Kutztown University sophomore Teagan Fortna (Central Bucks West) placed 22nd with a time of 17:14 in Friday’s Ramapo Invitational.
Chestnut Hill sophomore Aaron Morris (Springfield Township) placed 43rd with a time of 29:17.6 at Friday’s Adelphi Panther Invitational.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Jon Champagne-Cox (Bensalem) was 48th out of 103 runners with a time of 20:07.2 at Friday’s Bryn Mawr College Invitational 5K. Elijah Rizzo (Bensalem) posted a time of 22:36.9 and Chris Lasowski (William Tennent) finished in 26:41.6.
Temple junior Tyji Mays (Bensalem) finished third with a time of 27:19.8 at Friday’s Temple Invitational. Temple finished first in the five-team meet.
Ursinus junior Logan Mazullo (Central Bucks West) placed 15th with a time of 18:11.5 at Friday’s Bryn Mawr Invitational.
St. Joseph’s sophomore Matthew Scarpill (Central Bucks South) turned in a fourth place finish in a field of 32 in the freshman/sophomore category at the 2018 Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational on Saturday. It was an improvement on his freshman year 6K time by over six minutes. Freshman Ben Bunch (Central Bucks West) posted a time of 19:58 (PR) and sophomore Dan Mink (Pennsbury) finished in a time of 20:04.7 (PR).
Holy Family University freshman Sean Rahill (William Tennent) had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing first overall at the 18th annual Wilmington University Invite on Saturday morning. The Tennent graduate finished the 8K course in 28:31.45 – 24 seconds faster than the rest of the field – to secure the win. Junior Connor Irwin (Hatboro-Horsham) clocked in at 32:43.43 to finish 17th overall.
Penn State Abington freshman Ben Hoyer (Wissahickon) made his mark in his first collegiate match, finishing first overall at the Cairn Invitational with a time of 13:16 on the 4K course. He finished 10 seconds in front of the next finisher. Sophomore Dominic Pignatelli (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 16:14 to finish 13th overall, and David Hunt (William Tennent) finished 14th with a time of 16:18.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Gettysburg senior Danielle McMichael (Central Bucks East) finished 47th with a time of 17:10.1 at the Ninth Annual Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University Friday night.
Lehigh sophomore Hannah Knudsen (Hatboro-Horsham) placed 39th with a time of 14:56.9 at Friday’s season-opening Bison Open hosted by Bucknell University.
Kutztown senior Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) placed second with a time of 19:59 in Friday’s Ramapo Invitational. Lynne O’Connor (William Tennent) posted a time of 20:57. Kutztown took the team title.
Shippensburg junior Maria Antoni (Upper Moreland) finished 11th with a time of 16:40 at the Ninth Annual Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge on Friday. Senior Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) finished 15th with a time of 16:04.0 and Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) was 16th with a time of 16:09.8.
Ursinus senior Riley Engel (Council Rock North) finished fourth in Friday’s Bryn Mawr Invitational, completing the 5-kilometer Rose Tree Park course in a career-best 20:56.2, a full eight seconds ahead of the fifth place finisher.
St. Joseph’s junior Meridith Twomey (Pennsbury) posted a time of 15:18.4 (PR) at the 2018 Monmouth Kick-Off Invitational on Saturday.
Holy Family freshman Victoria Reid (Bensalem) finished 15th overall in her collegiate debut with a time of 23:19.29 at the 18th annual Wilmington University Invite on Saturday.
Penn State Abington senior Claire Reeves (Central Bucks South) finished 10th overall with a time of 20:35 at Friday’s Cairn Invitational.
Cairn University freshman Julia Markey (Souderton) placed eighth in Friday’s season-opening Cairn Invitational with a time of 20:11.
FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Riley Donnelly (Central Bucks East) has started in the defensive backfield for fourth-ranked University of Maryland in all five games of the Terrapins’ 5-0 start, the program’s best start since 2013. On Sunday, Maryland defeated No. 3 Duke 4-3
Brynne Schoppe (North Penn) recorded seven saves in a half of action in Albright’s 3-2 win over Eastern in the season opener on Saturday.
Freshman Jess Dixon (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed assists on both goals in Delaware Valley University’s 2-0 win over host Neumann University in its season opener on Friday.
Amanda Blum (Neshaminy) contributed an assist on the game-winning goal in Quinnipiac’s 3-2 win over Columbia on Friday.
Senior Corinne Kenney (Central Bucks South) was credited with an assist in Providence College’s 4-1 win over Bryant on Sunday. She also had an assist in the Friars’ 2-1 loss to Pacific on Monday.
Colby Eldridge (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the 2018 Misericorida University NCAA Woman of the Year. A senior field hockey standout, Eldridge was a four-year starter at forward and was the MAC Freedom
Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. A speech language pathology major, she was a CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American and was Misericordia’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Eldridge was named first team All-MAC Freedom for the fourth consecutive year and was a first team NFHCA All-Region selection. She led MU with 33 points and topped the MAC Freedom with nine assists and ended her career sixth in career points, seventh in goals and fourth in assists. Eldridge led the Cougars to their second MAC Freedom title in three years and was named to the MAC All-Academic team and was an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction. She was involved with numerous volunteer activities, including Special Olympics, Adopt-a-Family for Christmas and Adopt-a-Family for Thanksgiving. The Woman of the Year selection committee will next select the top 10 honorees in each division and will then choose and announce the top nine finalists (three from each division) at the end of September. Now in its 28th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
Maggie Walsh (Central Bucks South) scored the first goal of the game in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-1 road win at Misericordia on Friday.
Emily Cliggett (Central Bucks South) scored a goal and Christen Pennington (Neshaminy) added an assist in Villanova’s 7-3 victory over Lehigh on Sunday.
FOOTBALL
Freshman Malcolm Carey (Bensalem) scored the winning touchdown on a 20-yard run with 2:40 remaining Alvernia’s 26-21 win over Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon in the first ever football game for the Golden Wolves. Carey finished with a game-high 117 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He also had one reception for eight yards. Sophomore Mike Schoenleber (Wissahickon) contributed on the defensive side of the football, finishing with four tackles.
Mike Class (Pennridge) scored a touchdown on a one-yard dive in West Chester’s 44-6 win at Bentley on Saturday.
Craig Reynolds (Abington) scored his second touchdown of the day and the game-winner in the final two minutes to give Kutztown a 32-28 upset win over No. 17 Assumption University Saturday. Reynolds, who missed the final three games of last season due to injury, finished with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. He also ran for a 77-yard touchdown in the first half. It was the longest run of his career and KU’s longest since a school-record 98-yard run by Terry Williams in 2015. Reynolds tied Williams for sixth in school history with 22 career rushing touchdowns. He now needs 65 yards for 2,000 in his career and also moved into fifth in school history in career all-purpose yards. Luke Snyder (Pennsbury) had seven tackles while Nick Vasger (North Penn) had six.
Branden Mack (Cheltenham) made his first career start in Temple’s 19-17 loss to Villanova on Saturday and led the team with seven catches and 78 receiving yards.
Junior quarterback Thomas Garlick (Quakertown) threw four touchdown passes in the first half of Ursinus College’s 34-13 road win at Bison on Saturday. Garlick completed 21-of-35 passes for 291 yards. He fell one touchdown pass shy of matching the single-game school record and helped the Bears convert 10-of-15 third downs. Stacey Gardner (Upper Dublin) ran for 59 yards and a touchdown and also caught three passes for 34 yards. On fourth-and-eight, junior punter Jack Spingler (Neshaminy) – in his first game at that position – executed a fake punt to perfection, racing for 22 yards and a first down. In addition to delivering three solid punts, Spingler, the Bears' strong safety, also was a force on defense, contributing seven tackles – two for a loss – and two pass break-ups. Zach Gravelle (Quakertown) caught four passes for 38 yards.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Penn State senior Jackie Rogowicz (Pennsbry) was named a 2018-19 preseason honoree by the Big 10 office. Rogowicz concluded her 2017-18 campaign with a 74.31 stroke average. She took home an individual first place in the opening tournament of the 2017 fall season at the William & Mary Invitational. The Pennsbury graduate also had a successful summer, competing in the LPGA ShopRite Classic as well as the US Women’s Amateur.

Cameron Sheva (Pennridge) tallied a goal in Elizabethtown’s 4-3 loss to Keystone on Friday night.
Freshman Joey Indelicato (Neshaminy) served a ball into the box to set up a goal in Delaware Valley University’s 1-0 shutout at Yeshiva University on Friday. Sophomore transfer Josh Jarrett (Pennridge) was credited with one save in the shutout.
Kevin McKenna (North Penn) scored the first goal in Widener’s 3-2 win over Penn State Abington on Friday.
Senior forward Cole Kropnick (Wissahickon) scored a goal on a penalty kick in Shippensburg’s 3-1 loss to Chestnut Hill on Thursday.
Jose Palomeque (Upper Dublin) tallied assists on goals by Sean Seidenburg (Abington) and Tomasz Ogonowski (Central Bucks East) in Penn State Abington’s 3-2 loss to Widener on Friday.
Freshman midfielder Tarin Morris (Central Bucks West) made his college debut on Tuesday, playing 43 minutes in La Salle’s 2-1 win over Howard University.

Freshman Maddie Elwell (Vanderbilt) scored the first goal in Vanderbilt’s 2-1 win over Ohio University last Sunday to finish first at the Music City Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt.
A corner kick by Kristin Wilkinson (North Penn) set up the second goal of Elizabethtown’s 4-2 win over Rutgers-Camden on Friday night.
Senior Shaelyn McCarty (Central Bucks West) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Drexel a 1-0 victory against La Salle on Monday. The game-winner came in the 103rd minute when McCarty fired a shot from 20 yards out on the left side of the field into the lower right corner. The goal was the senior’s third of the season. In the 79th minute of last Friday’s 1-1 tie with Columbia, McCarty struck a through ball to the left side of the net for the equalizer.
Senior Megan Engeland (Pennsbury) contributed an assist on her team’s goal in Washington and Lee’s 1-1 draw against No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on the second day of the Carnegie Mellon Tartan Cup on Saturday.
Junior midfielder Nicole Abbott (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in the second half of No. 14 East Stroudsburg’s 6-1 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.
McKenna Mullin (Neshaminy) recorded five saves in No. 8 West Chester’s 1-0 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. In Thursday’s 1-1 tie with East Stroudsburg, Nikki Caffey (Council Rock South) scored off an assist from Linzi Wolfe (Quakertown). Mullin played the full 110 minutes, recording five saves while allowing just one goal. West Chester junior Tara McLaughlin (North Penn) finished ninth with a time of 24:42.5 in Friday’s season-opening Temple Invitational at Belmont Plateau.
Kailey Hopkins (William Tennent) faced 20 shots and recorded nine saves in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 loss to Goucher on Friday night.
Senior defender Kat McCoy (Neshaminy) had a crucial block that prevented the equalizer early in the second half of Temple’s 1-0 win over Maryland on Friday. McCoy cleared the ball after it slipped through the gloves of the goalkeeper.
Senior Beth McGee (Souderton) had a pair of assists in Shippensburg’s 3-0 victory over Shepherd on Thursday.
Senior Bree Rock (Bensalem) and freshman Jaqueline Ziegler (Neshaminy) each finished with a goal and one assist in Holy Family’s 8-0 win over Lincoln University on Saturday. Ziegler’s goal in the 26th minute marked the first of her collegiate career. Freshman goalie Alayna McSeed (Bensalem) played the second half in the net.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior Haley Sheehan (Quakertown) contributed 10 kills in Cairn University’s 2-1 win over St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn on Saturday. Also in Saturday’s tri-match, the Quakertown grad had 14 kills in Cairn’s 3-1 loss to Staten Island. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Immaculata, Sheehan had seven kills.
Sophomore Steph Judkins (Pennridge) contributed 10 kills, seven digs and a pair of service aces in Cabrini’s 3-0 loss to No. 7 Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday at the Trinity University National Invitational in San Antonio, Tex. In Cabrini’s 3-0 loss to Wisconsin –Stevens Point in the final match of the tournament, Judkins posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to No. 11 Trinity, freshman Hannah Dalton (Abington) notched a team-high nine kills in her collegiate debut. Judkins added eight. In a 3-0 loss to Aurora in the nightcap, Judkins paced the Cavaliers with seven kills and eight digs.
