MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington junior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) finished eighth overall at the Dickinson College Invitational Saturday. He posted a time of 26:21.06, breaking the Top-10 school record in an 8-kilometer race. Kane beat out multiple runners from nationally ranked teams. Senior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) crossed the line in 86th place with a personal best time of 28:43.49 and improved to the fourth spot of the program’s Top-10 rankings. Billy Donovan (Upper Moreland) finished with a personal record of 30:04.79 for the 140th spot to pick up the ninth slot on the Top-10 list.
IUP freshman Austin Cooper (Upper Merion) finished 133rd and freshman Jabari Freeman (Abington) was 191st at the Iona College Meet of Champions. IUP finished 15th out of 23 teams.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown sophomore Liz Wedekind (Pennsbury) posted a time of 24:34.03 on the long course at the Dickinson Long/Short Course Invitational on Saturday.
Natalie Ross (Souderton) finished second for Messiah in the 6K at the Dickinson Long/Short on Saturday while Emma Barbagallo (Council Rock North) finished third.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lauren Becker (Wissahickon) scored her fourth goal of the season in eighth-ranked Stanford’s 5-0 win over Central Michigan on Friday.
Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) contributed an assist in Delaware Valley’s 3-1 non-conference win over Albright on Wednesday.
Lehigh sophomore Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) received Patriot League honorable mention recognition for the week ending Sept. 14. She was selected Most Valuable Mountain Hawk for scoring both of Lehigh’s goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over Towson and totaled 12 shots in the contest.
Tofig scored her third goal over the last three games in Lehigh’s 4-2 win over Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) contributed an assist in No. 3 West Chester’s 6-1 win over Mansfield on Wednesday.
Junior Sarah Yerk (Pennridge) broke a scoreless tie with 3:23 remaining to give St. Joe’s a 1-0 win over Rider last Sunday.
Goalie Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) earned the win in The College of New Jersey’s 4-3 win at Messiah to up her record to 7-0. On Tuesday, Schlupp and Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) teamed up to earn the shutout win in TCNJ’s 7-0 victory at Ramapo. Krause made one save. The duo also combined for the shutout in last Sunday’s 7-0 win over Johns Hopkins. Krause registered two saves.
Senior midfielder Emily Hegner (Neshaminy) deflected in a shot on a penalty corner for a goal in Misericordia’s 2-1 loss to Scranton on Tuesday.
Junior Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was the stopper on a perfectly executed penalty corner that resulted in the game-winning goal in Quinnipiac’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Vermont on Sunday.
Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in La Salle’s 2-1 win over Davidson in its A-10 opener on Friday.
Alexis Carroll (Council Rock South) contributed a defensive save in No. 9 Bloomsburg’s 1-0 loss to top-ranked Millersville on Wednesday.
Freshman Abigail Gabriel (Souderton) scored the first goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-0 win over Widener. Junior Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) added a goal in the 10th minute to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a pair of goals in Lock Haven’s 3-1 win over Saint Louis on Saturday.
Freshman Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored her second goal of the season in Kutztown’s 4-2 win over Seton Hill on Wednesday night.
FOOTBALL
Senior running back Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 81 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in 23rd-ranked Lycoming’s 28-13 win over King’s College on Saturday. His two scoring runs helped him tie the school record for career touchdowns of 35 set by wide receiver Tim Dumas (1996-99). He also added four yards receiving and 82 yards on kick returns for 168 all-purpose yards, leaving him 552 yards shy of the school record. Teammate Josh Sibel (Pennsbury) had three receptions for 73 yards. Josh Cook (North Penn) teamed with Adin Hines to make a tackle for a loss.
Sophomore Corey Kelly (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the first overtime of Ursinus College’s 31-24 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Kelly finished with 74 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He also had three receptions for 17 yards. Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 27-yard field goal.
Sophomore Andrew Derr (Upper Dublin) completed 2-of-4 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown and also had five carries for 41 yards in 10th-ranked West Chester’s 45-10 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) had one reception for 21 yards while Shannon Mayer (Norristown) caught two passes for 14 yards.
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) had a career-high 11 tackles in Kutztown’s 37-28 loss to Gannon on Saturday.
Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) had 11 tackles in Millersville 46-17 loss to No. 25 Slippery Rock on Saturday. The Bensalem grad has double-digit stops in each of Millersville’s first three games.
Senior James Brennan (Upper Merion) had seven tackles, including two for a loss, in Shippensburg’s 56-34 loss to California on Saturday. Junior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass. He
finished with 116 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions. Jack Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) is an All-American offensive lineman for a Cal squad that accumulated 660 yards of total offense. The Red Raiders had 514 yards of total offense.
Bill LaBadie (Bensalem) collected his first career interception in No. 3 Bloomsburg’s 38-22 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday. He made it an interception to remember by rushing 41 yards the other way for the score. The point after missed, but it pulled the Huskies to within 14-9 with 3:33 left in the half.
Junior wide receiver Gerard Wednowski (North Penn) had a pair of receptions for 26 yards in East Stroudsburg’s 47-34 win at Edinboro on Saturday. Senior defensive end Brandon Gattelli (Bensalem) recorded his 18th career sack.
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle senior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 70th with a 77-75-80=232 (+20) at the Rutgers Invitational. La Salle was tied for 12th in the 18-team field.
West Chester senior Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) tied for 12th with a score of 223 at the Glad Springs Intercollegiate Championships. West Chester finished fifth as a team.
Millersville junior Rodney Anders (Souderton) cracked the top 25 of the Glad Springs Intercollegiate Championship, finishing 12-over. Millersville finished third as a team.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Middlebury senior Jordan Glatt (Central Bucks East) shot a 160 (79-81) to finish 13th at the NYU Invitational last Sunday. Middlebury finished third in the 12-team invitational.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) recorded five saves in Drexel’s 1-1 tie with No. 4 New Mexico on Friday.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 2-0 win over visiting Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Friday.
Matt Robinson (North Penn) scored on a feed from Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) in the 88th minute to propel La Salle to a 3-2 win over Stetson on Sunday afternoon. Farrell had given La Salle a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the season in the 51st minute, heading in a Nick Becker (Council Rock North) free kick from midfield. Earlier, George Breslin (William Tennent) scored his first career goal on a free kick just seconds before halftime to knot the score 1-1.
Kyle MacDonald (Pennsbury) scored his second career goal in the 63rd minute to propel 10th-ranked Penn State to a 1-0 win over Ohio State on Sunday in front of 1,942 fans on a warm, muggy day that featured a halftime downpour. MacDonald is a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a member of the Schreyers Honors College at Penn State.
Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) was credited with four saves and earned his first shutout of the season in Penn State Abington’s 2-0 win over Cazenovia College on Sunday. In last Sunday’s 5-1 win over SUNY Cobleskill, Joe Klapper (Central Bucks West) scored a goal.
Ryan Smith (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of a standout defensive effort in Scranton’s 0-0 double overtime tie with Misericordia on Tuesday.
Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 2-0 win over Immaculata on Wednesday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Nesteruk (Central Bucks East) made five stops in the opening 45 minutes of The College of New Jersey’s 1-1 tie with Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Wednesday night. He finished with six saves.
Alex Lean (Council Rock North) took a shot that was turned away, but teammate Brett Glasco banged home the rebound in West Chester’s 2-1 road win over No. 12 Mercyhurst on Friday.
Brian Kilcoyne (Bensalem) and Austin Transue (Neshaminy) both scored goals in Bloomsburg’s 5-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday night. Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West), on a throw-in, threw a strike across the field that was headed into the net for a goal that gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead. In Bloomsburg’s 3-0 win Friday that knocked Seton Hill from the ranks of the undefeated, Zima was interfered with in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. On the PK, Zima drilled the shot to the left of the goalie to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. In Bloomsburg’s 5-1 non-conference win at Chestnut Hill Tuesday, Transue, a redshirt freshman, tallied his first goal with the Huskies when he took advantage of a ball bouncing in the box after a deflection by the Griffins’ keeper. Transue’s goal knotted the score 1-1. Matt Zima (Council Rock North) scored to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore forward Kayla Nolan (Abington) scored four goals, three in the first half, in Penn State Abington’s 6-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill last Sunday. Teammate Jennifer Cifuents (Bensalem) assisted on her fourth goal. Molly Wyman (Abington) also had an assist in the game. In Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cazenovia College, Nolan scored the first two goals – her second on a penalty kick. Nolan has 12 goals and 25 points on the season.
Grace Miorelli (Souderton) scored two goals to lead Cedarville to a 2-1 non-conference home win against previously unbeaten Ashland on Tuesday. After hitting the crossbar midway through the first half, Miorelli outworked the Ashland defense for a 15-yarder in the 39th minute and a 1-0 lead. In the 72nd minute, Miorelli scored from 12 yards out.
Carly Yost (North Penn) delivered a cross that set up the game winner in No. 9 West Chester’s 2-0 win over No. 21 Gannon on Saturday. In Friday’s 2-1 win over Mercyhurst, Yost scored a goal and assisted on the other. She headed a corner kick into the net 11 minutes into the contest to put the Golden Rams on top. She assisted on the second goal that spotted the Golden Rams a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute.
Senior Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) scored in the third minute of the game and teammate Samantha O’Donnell (Neshaminy) scored her first career goal in Holy Family’s 7-0 win over Bloomfield on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-2 win over Wilmington, Kisselback scored a goal.
Senior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) contributed an assist in Gettysburg’s 1-0 win over York (Pa.) College on Wednesday.
Megan Gerhart (North Penn) had six saves in Virginia Wesleyan’s 1-1 double overtime tie with Salisbury on Tuesday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) scored a goal in Elizabethtown’s 5-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday.
Sophomore Ramsey McMenamin (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in St. Joseph’s 2-0 win over Quinnipiac on Friday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Honora Hegarty (Abington) posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles in Penn State Abington’s 5-4 win over Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday. She also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-2 win. In Wednesday’s 8-1 win over Cairn, Hegerty earned a 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at flight No. 1 and was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-4 win.
Junior Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles in Gwynedd Mercy’s 6-3 loss to Moravian on Wednesday. In last Saturday’s 9-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.), Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) earned a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 win at No. 1 singles and was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-2 win. Kristen Kriebel (Pennridge) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles and was part of the third doubles team that earned an 8-0 win. Caffarello rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
West Chester junior Claire Uhle (Wissahickon) reached the finals of the singles competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships last Sunday before falling 6-0 to Mercyhurst’s Saoia Gomez. Uhle, seeded 5-8 in the re-draw at the beginning of the tournament, was playing her eighth tennis match of the day Sunday when she took the court for the women’s singles final at 4 p.m. Gomez was on her fifth set as she was not part of the doubles championships. Uhle reached the championship by upsetting No. 2 seed Ramona Czakon from California (Pa.) 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals before bumping off No. 4 seed Oranza Carrillo from Edinboro, 6-3, in the semifinals. All matches played Sunday were single sets due to the abbreviated schedule following Saturday’s virtual washout of the tournament. The transfer from Northern Colorado was a 6-2 winner of Nina Barbano from Slippery Rock in the second round, following an 8-1 win over Lauren Zezenski from Clarion. Earlier in the afternoon, Uhle teamed up with Maddy Shaak in the doubles flight and reached the semifinals before bowing to the eventual champions from Cal. Uhle and Shaak downed the pair from IUP, 6-1, in the quarterfinals after topping Bloomsburg’s pair, 6-2, in the first round.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had eight digs in UMBC’s 3-0 loss to No. 20 Arizona on the final day of the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday. In UMBC’s 3-2 win over Tulane earlier in the tournament, Griffith had 23 digs. She had 20 digs in UMBC’s 3-2 loss to Coppin State.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) recorded a match high 17 kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-2 win over Salisbury on Friday. In Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Muhlenberg, Harvey led the Diplomats with 12 kills.
Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) had a season-high 13 kills to go along with 19 digs in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss at Pace University on Saturday. Freshman Cecilia Weir (William Tennent) had 14 digs. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Southern Connecticut, Ingram had 14 digs and 21 assists. Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) had five kills and 12 digs. In Tuesday’s 3-1 win over the University of the Sciences, Melanie Ingram had a match-high 18 kills. She made only six errors on the attack as she recorded a .286 attack percentage. She also led the team with a season-high 18 digs. Devyn Ingram had 47 assists, tying a career high on Oct. 12. She also recorded 12 digs.
Junior setter Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had 52 assists in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Moravian at the Moravian tri-match on Saturday. She had 31 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Bryn Mawr. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Haverford, Koenig had 26 assists.
Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) had nine kills in No. 11 Eastern University’s 3-2 loss to No. 13 Elmhurst in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Saturday. In Eastern’s 3-1 win over Wheaton, Elechko had eight kills.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had 15 kills in Ursinus College’s 3-2 loss to Gettysburg in a tri-match Saturday. She had four aces in the Bears’ sweep of Manhattanville. In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss at Penn State-Berks, McCartney had eight kills.
Senior tri-captain Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) delivered a double-double performance in UConn’s 3-2 win over Columbia on Saturday. Maugle slammed down 14 kills and also had 10 assists.
Junior defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) recorded 10 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had 10 kills and 10 blocks – three solo blocks – in a pair of Kutztown matches on Saturday The Golden Bears were swept by both Slipperty Rock and Edinboro. In a pair of losses to Mercyhurst and Gannon Friday, Stringer finished the day with 12 kills.
