MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Cairn University junior Joel Vareughese (Bensalem) placed second overall out of 71 runners in the men’s 8K at the Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday. Trevor Hickey (Quakertown) finished 13th overall. The Highlanders won the team title.
Ursinus junior Logan Mazullo (Central Bucks West) was the fourth Bear to cross the finish line, posting a time of 29:21 at the Paul Short Run on Saturday.
Sophomore Connor McMenamin (Souderton) was the top Bucknell runner for the third straight meet at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College at the Franklin Park course. He finished 66th out of 215 runners, clocking in at 25:28 on the 8K course. Bucknell finished 12th in a 23-team field that included six nationally-ranked squads on Friday.
Gettysburg sophomore Dylan McKeever (Central Bucks East) placed 52nd with a time of 27:47 in the White race of the Paul Short Run on Saturday at Lehigh University. In last Saturday’s Dickinson Long-Short Invitational, McKeever finished 14th with a time of 12:50.
Penn State Abington freshman Ben Hoyer (Wissahickon) earned another first place finish at the Lions Night Run on Friday. The Wissahickon grad came in first place out of 58 runners with a time of 28:50, almost a full minute in front of the second place finisher. Dominic Pignatelli (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 32:51 to finish 16th, and David Hunt (William Tennent) was 28th with a time of 34:56. Abington finished second out of seven teams. In last Saturday’s Abington Invitational, Hoyer finished first with a time of 28:24, averaging 5:42 a mile, which places him in the top 10 all-time finishers in the 8K competition. Pignatelli earned a time of 33:48 in 21st overall while Hunt crossed the finish line in a time of 37:10 in 45th.
Holy Family University freshman Sean Rahill (William Tennent) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23. This marked the third time this season Rahill has been honored as the Rookie of the Week. Rahill finished second overall at the Osprey Open hosted by Stockton University, posting a season-best time of 16:49.6. It marked his third top five performance of the season.
Holy Family junior Connor Irwin (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 46th overall in a season-best time of 30:22.9 at the Osprey Open hosted by Stockton University.
Saint Joseph’s sophomore Matthew Scarpill (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 25:49 and finished 131st at the 45th annual Paul Short Run on Saturday at Lehigh University. St. Joe’s placed 14th in the field of 41 teams in the Gold Race. Earlier in the day in the 33-team Open Race, freshman Ben Bunch (Central Bucks West) ran his first collegiate 8K in a time of 26:38 (74th).
Chestnut Hill junior Aaron Morris (Springfield Township) posted a time of 35;06 and placed 30th at the Bryn Athyn College Invitational on Friday.
Jefferson freshman Josh Skinner (Upper Dublin) finished 37th out of 112 runners with a time of 29:50.0 at the Osprey Open at Stock University last Saturday.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Jon Champagne-Cox (Bensalem) posted a time of 37:37 and junior Chris Laskowski (William Tennent) finished in 41:28 at the Paul Short Run on Saturday. In last Saturday’s Penn State Abington Invite, Elijah Rizzo (Bensalem) posted a time of 40:03.9 (57th) and Laskowski finished in 43:21.7 (62nd).
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Cairn University freshman Julia Markey (Souderton) placed 19th at the Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday.
Gettysburg senior Danielle DeMichael (Central Bucks East) posted a time of 25:51 at the 45th Annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Saturday. In last Saturday’s Dickinson College Long-Short Course Invitational, DeMichael finished 34th among 119 competitors in the 4K, clocking a time of 16:34.
Ursinus senior Riley Engle (Council Rock North) was the second Bear across the finish line at the annual Paul Short Run, crossing in 24:57 to place 59th.
Shippensburg junior Maria Antoni (Upper Moreland) placed 21st with a time of 22:24 in the Brown race at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on Saturday. Senior Jackie Kinkead (Central Bucks East) posted a time of 23:33 and Lindsey Gerlach (Central Bucks West) finished in 23:35. At last Saturday’s Dickinson Long/Short Invite (4K), Antoni finished fourth with a time of 14:53 and Gerlach was 20th with a time of 15:52.
Kutztown senior Stephanie Bresadola (North Penn) finished 71st in a field of 363 runners with a time of 23:15, a 6:14 mile pace, at Saturday’s Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University. Lynne O’Connor (William Tennent) ran a season-best 24:22.
West Chester junior Tara McLaughlin (North Penn) posted a time of 23:23 at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday. In last weekend’s Lock Haven Invitational, McLaughlin crossed the finish line with a time of 22:42.8.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sophomore Bryn Boylan (Central Bucks West) scored the first goal of her career in No. 1 University of North Carolina’s 5-1 win over No. 11 Syracuse on Saturday.
Junior Becky Gerhart (Quakertown) recorded her fourth defensive save of the season in Temple’s 8-2 loss to Liberty.
Marley Berger (Springfield Township) scored a goal in Albright’s 6-0 win over Hood on Friday. Sophomore Brynne Schoppe (North Penn) registered the first shutout of her collegiate career after making no saves in the entire 70 minutes. In Albright’s 6-2 win over Immaculata, Berger scored in a scramble during corner play.
Jess Dixon (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed an assist in Delaware Valley University’s 3-1 loss to Marywood on Wednesday. In Del Val’s 3-1 win over Immaculata, Aimee MacFarland (Souderton) had an assist.
Sophomore Erin Chioffe (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in DeSales University’s 5-0 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday.
Jamie Pennington (Neshaminy) scored the game-winner on a corner in overtime in Villanova's 4-3 win over Rider University last Sunday. Emma McLaughlin (Quakertown) contributed an assist on the Wildcats second goal.
Junior Erin Sayboldt (Souderton) scored two goals and assisted on another in Ursinus College’s 4-0 win over Dickinson on Saturday. Senior goalie Jules Singer (Council Rock North) combined with teammate Addie Frey for the shutout. Each made two saves. In last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Gettysburg, Sayboldt broke a 1-1 tie with a goal that proved to be the game-winner. Singer made four saves to earn the victory. In the Bears’ 3-0 win over Swarthmore, Saybolt scored a goal and Singer was credited with four saves in the win.
Sophomore Amber Blackshear (North Penn) scored with nine minutes remaining to knot the score 2-2 in La Salle’s 3-2 overtime win over Vermont last Sunday. It was her third goal of the season. In the Explorers’ 3-2 loss to Georgetown, Blackshear scored a goal.
Marissa Elizardo (North Penn) made five saves, including a key save late in the second half that helped preserve the tie and send the game into overtime, in No. 3 West Chester’s 2-1 overtime win over No. 1 East Stroudsburg on Thursday. In West Chester’s 2-1 win over No. 5 Millersville, Elizardo was credited with eight saves – six in the second half.
FOOTBALL
VMI quarterback Reece Udinski (North Penn) was named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23 for his record-setting performance at Western Carolina. The sophomore QB set three program records in the Keydets’ 52-50 loss to the Catamounts, posting new school standards in completions (43), attempts (72) and passing yards (491). His nearly 500 yards through the air were good for seventh in a game in SoCon history, while he added four touchdown passes on the day. Udinski led VMI on two scoring drives of more than 60 yards after the Catamounts – who entered the contest receiving votes in both major national polls – took a 15-point lead with 6:19 left in the game. The weekly award marks the first time a VMI offensive player has achieved the honor since wide receiver Aaron Sanders accomplished the feat on Oct. 26, 2015.
Udinski threw for 434 yards and three touchdowns, completing 37-of-70 passes in VMIs 48-38 loss to Mercer on Saturday. All three totals were the second-best marks of his career following last week’s performance at Western Carolina. On VMI’s first touchdown of the day, he connected with Javeon Lara for a 59-yard strike, the longest pass play to this point of his VMI career.
Malcolm Carey (Bensalem) had a 16-yard touchdown run in Alvernia’s 34-14 loss to Wilkes University on Saturday. He finished with 60 yards on the ground. Mike Schoenleber (Wissahickon) had eight tackles. In last Saturday’s 41-10 loss to Delaware Valley, Schoenleber had five tackles, including one for a loss.
Junior running back D’Andre Pollard (Neshaminy) scored a touchdown in Villanova’s 49-7 win over Bucknell last Saturday.
Craig Reynolds (Abington) opened the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter on his way to 112 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns on the ground in Kutztown’s 44-10 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday. Reynolds has now rushed for 29 touchdowns in his career, moving into second all-time at KU. In the second half, Alec Rosenfeld (Bensalem) knocked in his first field goal of the season. Junior linebacker Luke Snyder (Pennsbury) had a career night, finishing with 11 total tackles. Adam Krauter (Springfield Township) added a sack for KU.
Junior Thomas Garlick (Quakertown) threw a 75-yard touchdown pass and Jack Spingler (Neshaminy) recovered a fumble in Ursinus College’s 52-6 defeat at the hands of Johns Hopkins on Saturday. In last Saturday’s 21-14 win over Moravian, Garlick was 22-of-30 for 210 yards and a touchdown. Junior Stacey Gardner (Upper Dublin) had 93 yards on 11 carries, including a 13-yard touchdown that opened the scoring.
Redshirt senior lineman Josh Lister (Souderton) had a team-high eight tackles, including one tackle for a loss, in Shippensburg’s 28-24 loss at Bloomsburg last Saturday.
Mitchell Vierling (William Tennent) engineered a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:16 off the clock and culminated with a 14-yard touchdown pass for the game-winning strike in Widener’s 27-21 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday. Vierling completed all six of his pass attempts for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Junior quarterback Michael Marino (Wissahickon) completed 14-of-24 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns to direct Chestnut Hill to a 31-26 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Friday. It is the Griffins first-ever Collegiate Sprint Football League victory over Penn in three meetings. In last Saturday’s 59-44 win over Mansfield, Marino completed 11-of-17 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns.
Mike Class (Pennridge) scored from nine yards out in No. 13/18 West Chester’s 42-16 win over Millersville last Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Embry-Riddle juniorQuinn Guzman (Souderton) finished play at the 2018 Jay Jennison Cup with a score of 224 (78-72-74), finishing in a tie for 44th.
Cairn University freshman Ryan Borrmann (William Tennent) shot an 81 on the first day of the Montgomery Cup, carding a 3 over par 39 on the back nine before finishing the second day with an 87 to finish second on the Highlanders. Nate Borrmann (William Tennent) showed improvement from last season, shooting an 86 and 87. Borrmann notched birdies on both the first and fourth holes.
Penn State Abington sophomore Shane Nocito (Harry S Truman) finished fifth overall with a score of 77, six strokes off the par 71 course, at the Swarthmore Invitational. Luke Fisher (Cheltenham) finished 29th overall with a score of 85 while Christian Jabbar (Council Rock South) and Ryan Check (Neshaminy) finished 64th and 66th respectively.
Temple sophomore Dawson Anders (Souderton) tied for 72nd with a 239 (+9) at the River Run Collegiate in Davidson, N.C., last weekend.
La Salle sophomore David Kim (Upper Dublin) scored a 154 through two rounds of play, shooting an 81 and a 73 to put himself tied for 61st at the Patriot Intercollegiate in Lorton, Va. At the Hartford Invitational, Kim carded a 152.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Penn State senior Jackie Rogowicz (Pennsbury) shot a 5-over and was tied for 29th after the opening 18 holes of the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. As an individual, Maddy Herr (Council Rock North) shot 5-over and sits in a tie for 29th. In last weekend’s Nittany Lion Invitational, Rogowicz finished in a tie for seventh at 2-over (218).
West Chester senior Juliarose Genuardi (North Penn) shot a 156 (78, 78) to tie for fifth overall at the LeMoyne Invitational Title. West Chester won the team title.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ryan Leatherman (Quakertown) was part of a defense that allowed just one shot on goal in Cairn University’s 1-0 win over Keystone College last Saturday.
Sophomore John Griffin (Pennsbury) collected a pass in the 14th minute and found the net for a goal in Cabrini’s 2-0 victory at Delaware Valley University on Wednesday.
Jose Palomeque (Upper Dublin) and Tomas Ogonowski (Central Bucks East) both netted their fifth goals of the season in Penn State Abington’s 5-1 win over Morrisville State on Saturday. Sebastian Krysztofowicz (Central Bucks East) also contributed a goal, and senior defender Sean Seidenburg (Abington) had an assist. In the Nittany Lions’ 8-0 win over Gallaudet, Krysztofowicz scored his first goal of the season. Sebastian Perkowski (Pennridge), Ogonowski and Palomeque each connected on their fourth goal.
Sophomore midfielder Jacob Helwig (Central Bucks South) recorded his first career goal on a one-timer high into the net in Ursinus College’s 1-1 tie with Kean. The sequence started with a throw-in by senior midfielder Justin Molyneaux (Souderton).
Junior Cole Kropnick (Wissahickon) connected on his PSAC-leading ninth tally of the season in Shippensburg’s 2-1 win over No. 25 Seton Hill on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win at East Stroudsburg, Kropnick scored the game-winner in the 68th minute on a low shot from the top of the box. The tally marked Kropnick’s 20th career goal. In Shippensburg’s 3-2 win over Goldey-Beacom, Kropnick scored a pair of goals – his first with an assist from junior Colin Marks (Pennsbury). Through his last 20 matches dating back to the start of the 2017 season, Kropnick has 17 goals and three assists (37 points).
Kevin Bowers (Council Rock South) scored a pair of goals in the game’s first 23 minutes in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-2 loss to Bryn Athyn.
Nick LeFevre (William Tennent) scored his third goal of the season in the 16th minute to even the score at 1-1 in Widener’s 5-1 loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
Nick Jachwak (Souderton) scored in the 20th minute off a perfectly placed free kick in West Chester’s 4-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown. In West Chester’s 1-0 win in overtime over the University of the District of Columbia, Brett Miller (Council Rock North) delivered the long cross that set up the game-winner.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Senior Shealyn McCarty (Central Bucks West) was named the Drexel School of Education Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 24. McCarty scored her fifth goal of the season to help the women’s soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory against the College of Charleston. The game-winner came in the 106th minute of action when McCarty fired a shot from 20 yards out that bounced between Charleston’s defenders and into the back of the net. Her fifth goal ranks her first on the squad and second in the CAA.
Senior Michaela Finneyfrock (Council Rock North) scored a pair of goals in St. Joseph’s 3-0 win over Richmond on Thursday. Senior goalkeeper Grace Bendon (Central Bucks West) recorded one save in the shutout. In last Sunday’s 2-1 win over La Salle, Bendon earned the win in goal. In St. Joe’s 2-0 loss to Saint Louis, Bendon recorded a game-high five saves.
Senior midfielder Megan Engeland (Pennsbury) scored the 31st goal of her career in Washington and Lee’s 2-1 loss to ODAC foe Bridgewater on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Roanoke, Engeland took four shots, and it was her first game of the season where she didn’t record a point as she saw her streak of six games come to an end. In last Sunday’s 2-1 overtime win against St. Mary’s (Md.), Engeland had an assist on the game-winning goal. In last Friday’s 1-1 double overtime draw against Randolph-Macon, Engeland finished on a corner kick to tie the game 1-1.
Linzi Wolfe (Quakertown) contributed an assist on the game-winner in No. 12 West Chester’s 1-0 win over Edinboro on Saturday. Senior goalkeeper McKenna Mullin (Neshaminy) recorded seven big saves in the shutout win. In Wednesday’s 1-0 win over No. 11 Kutztown, Wolfe netted her first goal of the season and the only goal of the game. Mullin made five saves to keep the dangerous KU offense off the scoreboard. In last Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Bloomsburg, Mullin was credited with six saves. In West Chester’s 2-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown, Mullin recorded two saves in 83 minutes of work.
Shannon McGuinn (William Tennent) contributed a goal and an assist in Allegheny’s 2-0 win over Fredonia State University on Tuesday.
Freshman Mary Kate Smith (Springfield Township) scored her first goal of the season in Penn State Abington’s 4-0 win over Gallaudet.
Senior Alyssa Christiansen (William Tennent) scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Bree Rock (Bensalem) in Holy Family’s 3-0 win over Dominican College on Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Alayna McSeed (Bensalem) recorded her second shutout of the season in the victory. In last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bloomfield College, McSeed preserved the shutout with three saves in net.
Freshman Kelsey Butler (Pennsbury) scored her second goal of the season – which also was the game-winning goal – in Jefferson University’s 4-2 win over Bloomfield on Saturday. Kasey Schlupp (Council Rock South) scored off a corner kick for her first goal of the season. In Monday’s 3-2 loss to Goldey-Beacom, sophomore Emily Discavage (Council Rock South) was credited with her fourth assist. In last Saturday’s 3-0 win over Felician, Discavage made a cross that set up the first goal.
Beth McGee (Souderton) netted her first goal of the year in Shippensburg’s 3-2 win over Gannon last Friday.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Victoria Braeunle (North Penn) was named to the Atlantic East Women’s Soccer Honor Roll for the week ending Sept. 23. The North Penn graduate contributed to all three of the team’s goals in both of their wins in the week. She had the lone goal against Bryn Athyn and had a goal and an assist against Lycoming.
Goalie Kelsey Hopkins (William Tennent) tied a career high with 13 saves in Gwynedd Mercy’s 1-1 tie with Alvernia on Saturday. Hopkins and the defense stood tall against an Alvernia squad that took 27 shots and had 12 corner kicks. In Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Bryn Mawr, Hopkins recorded three saves for her third shutout of the season. In last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Lycoming, Braeunle had a goal and an assist. In Gwynedd Mercy’s 1-0 win over Bryn Athyn, Braeunle scored her second goal of the season, and Hopkins recorded five saves for her second shutout of the season and 19th in her career.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Stephanie Jin (Wissahickon) earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at first doubles in Penn State Abington’s 8-1 loss to Arcadia. In the Nittany Lions’ 6-1 win over Holy Family, Jin picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles and was part of the second doubles team that earned a win. Marta Tymchenko (Bensalem) earned 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 win at third singles.
West Chester freshman Shannon Nixon (Cheltenham) was the lone Golden Ram in action on the opening evening of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship. She squared off against Salem’s Brianna Vazquez in a play-in match inside the B singles bracket, winning straight sets (6-2, 6-1).
Victoria Hanus (Pennridge) was part of the flight three doubles team that earned a 7-5 win in West Chester’s 5-2 loss to Roberts Wesleyan. In last Saturday’s Bloomsburg Invitational, senior Siena Cerra (Neshaminy) had one singles win and one doubles win.
East Stroudsburg junior Aubrianna Stetina (Quakertown) won three matches to help lead the Warriors at the two-day Bloomsburg Invitational. Stetina earned a 6-4, 6-3 singles win. Ivanna Pittman (Harry S Truman) was part of a doubles victory.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Haley Sheehan (Quakertown) had nine kills and three aces in Cairn University’s 3-0 win over Centenary on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Lancaster Bible College, Sheehan had seven kills and one ace, and in the Highlanders’ 3-0 loss to Hood, Sheehan had nine kills. In Cairn’s 3-0 win over the University of Valley Forge, Sheehan had 11 kills and three aces.
Sophomore Steph Judkins (Pennridge) led the way with 19 kills, 12 digs and two blocks in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Swarthmore on Friday. Freshman Hannah Dalton (Abington) added 12 kills, one ace and three blocks. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Widener, Judkins paced the offense, pairing a match-high 18 kills and 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. She also had three service aces. Dalton had seven kills, two aces and one block. In last Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Stockton at Stockton’s Ospreys Classic, Judkins had another double-double, pairing 18 kills and 12 digs. Dalton had four kills and six blocks. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham later in the day, Judkins had 17 kills. Dalton was named to the Ospreys All-Tournament Team after recording 21 kills, 22 total blocks, including eight solo blocks, 14 digs and four service aces. On day one of the Ospreys Classic, Judkins had a match-high 18 kills against just four errors in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Catholic. Dalton had 7.5 blocks. In the Blue and White’s sweep of Springfield College, Judkins had 22 kills and Dalton had eight kills and two blocks.
Sam Jones (Hatboro-Horsham) had 17 digs in Kent University’s 3-2 loss to Buffalo on Sunday.
Gwynedd Mercy sophomore Cait Saalfrank (Pennridge) was honored for the third week in a row when she was named to the Atlantic East Volleyball Honor Roll for the week ending Sept. 23. The Pennridge grad, who is coming off back-to-back Atlantic East Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors, totaled 102 of the team’s 316 digs in four matches and also had nine service aces. At Clarks Summit, she had 27 digs, and the next night at Marymount, she had 19. In a tri-match, she put up 29 and 27 respectively in two wins.
Saalfrank was named Atlantic East Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 17. The sophomore libero totaled 81 digs in three matches/13 sets and posted a .954 reception percentage. She had 25 digs, three kills and three assists in a 3-1 win over Cairn. In a 3-1 win over Albright, she had 29 digs, and in a five-set contest at Notre Dame of Maryland, she contributed 27 digs, three kills and three aces. Saalfrank led the Atlantic East in both digs (235) and digs per set (6.35).
Madelyn Mosser (Pennridge) had seven kills, Bridget McTamney (Plymouth Whitemarsh) doled out 28 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double while Cassie McCarney (William Tennent) had five aces in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 sweep of visiting Rosemont on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win at Delaware Valley, McTamney notched her seventh double-double with 22 assists and 22 digs to go along with three aces and two kills. In last Saturday’s 3-2 win over Bryn Mawr, Mosser had eight kills and 22 digs. Later in the day, in Gwynedd’s 3-1 win over Bryn Athyn, McCarney led four players in double figures with a career-high 12 kills. Saalfrank had five aces.
