MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington senior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) was named North Eastern Athletic Conference Runner of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1. Competing at Bryn Athyn College’s inaugural invitational, Volpe topped all but one participant in the 24-runner field after finishing the rain-soaked, seven-kilometer course in 23:33. Volpe’s performance helped the Nittany Lions capture the team title at the four-squad event.
Bloomsburg’s James Wilson (Central Bucks South) finished 22nd with a time of 32:17 at the Husky Invitational on Saturday.
Cairn University sophomore Matt DeFlavis (Hatboro-Horsham) finished with a PR of 31:08 at the 41st Annual Paul Short Invitational last weekend. Senior Wayne Hailstone (Quakertown) finished with his lifetime PR of 33:05.
La Salle’s Chris Berry (Central Bucks West) posted a time of 25:17 and Francis Ferruzzi (Upper Dublin) crossed the finish line in 25:29 at the Paul Short Run last weekend.
Penn State Abington junior Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) clinched first place overall for the third straight year at the Charger Invitational hosted by Lancaster Bible on Saturday. The CB East alum led the pack for a new course record of 26:59.4 on the 8-kilometer course.
Ursinus junior David Slade (Abington) finished 13th overall with a time of 29:49 at the Charger Invitational hosted by Lancaster Bible College on Saturday. Ursinus finished second in the team standings.
Shippensburg freshman Alex Balla (Quakertown) was the Raiders’ No. 2 runner, finishing fourth overall in 26:24 in the 8K Mack Cooper Challenge on Saturday. Sophomore Alec Brand (Central Bucks East) finished 10th despite being SU’s No. 6 runner, crossing the finish line in 26:43. Shippensburg captured the team title.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Cairn University senior Hannah Eichner (Cheltenham) ran a PR of 31:10 at the 41st Annual Paul Short Invitational last weekend.
Shippensburg freshman Sarah Latch (Central Bucks East) placed 12th overall with a time of 23:58 at the Mack Cooper Challenge on Saturday. Shippensburg won the team title.
Bloomsburg senior Kate Dodds (Upper Dublin) finished second with a time of 23:12 at the Husky Invitational on Saturday. Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) also finished in the top 10 with a time of 24:22 while teammate Jessica Quesenberry (Wissahickon) finished with a time of 27:32. Overall, the Huskies placed six in the top 10 and captured the team title.
FIELD HOCKEY
Emily Hawkins (Cheltenham) and teammate Amy Denmon combined for 18 saves with Hawkins collecting 11 in Keystone College’s 3-2 loss to Immaculata on Saturday.
Freshman Megan Hamilton (Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:10 in Providence’s 8-1 win over Georgetown on Saturday. Hamilton has a team high 12 goals.
Junior Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) collected the hat trick in Delaware Valley’s 4-3 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday. Freshman Carlie Baldus (Hatboro-Horsham) added a single goal.
Freshman Melissa Herd (Pennridge) scored a goal in St. Joseph’s 3-2 loss to perennial Atlantic 10 power Massachusetts on Friday.
Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) notched her 12th win of the season with three saves in The College of New Jersey’s 2-1 win over Montclair State on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 7-1 win at Eastern University, Schlupp earned the win playing a scoreless first half while senior Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) played the final frame and registered a season-high five saves.
Senior Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) had a key interception in Yale’s 1-0 win over Bryant on Wednesday.
Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in Lehigh’s 4-2 loss to Brown on Sunday.
Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) contributed an assist in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-1 win over Marywood on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Delaware Valley, senior Brittany Wilson (Upper Moreland) assisted on both goals.
Alayna Brown (Souderton) contributed an assist in Lock Haven’s 4-0 win over Limestone on Sunday.
FOOTBALL
Lycoming senior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 5. Needhammer reached one milestone and broke the school record for all-time points scored in Lycoming’s 31-10 win over Stevenson. He rushed 19 times for 113 yards and two scores as he became the third running back in program history to reach 3,000 career rushing yards. His two scores, meanwhile, helped him surpass the mark of 222 career points set by kicker John Phillips (1989-92), as his school record 38 touchdowns gives him 228 career points. He recorded 5.9 yards per rush against the Mustangs, who entered the game allowing an average of 2.2. In all, Needhammer posted three 20-yard rushes during the game to cross 100 yards for the fourth time in five games this year.
Senior John Sibel (Pennsbury) caught six passes for a career high 95 yards and a score in Lycoming’s 52-42 loss to No. 24 Delaware Valley on Saturday.
Senior Jesse Knepp (Pennridge) had a 14-yard touchdown run in Randolph-Macon’s 42-21 win over Catholic University on Friday. Knepp finished the game with 50 yards on 10 carries.
Junior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass in Shippensburg’s 42-24 win over Lock Haven on Saturday. He finished the game with 97 yards receiving.
Sophomore Kurt Logan (Central Bucks West) caught a school record 11 passes for a school record 158 yards and tied the school record with three touchdown receptions in Mansfield’s 48-32 loss to undefeated Army in Collegiate Sprint Football League play on Friday night.
Ursinus junior kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5. Against Moravian, Boyer averaged 42.2 yards per punt on four punts, placing one inside the 20 and forcing two fair catches. He also booted a 33-yard field goal and was 3-for-3 on PATs.
DJ McFadden (Abington) had three catches for 37 yards in Bloomsburg’s 41-0 win over Millersville on Saturday.
Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) was a bright spot in Kutztown’s defense in the Golden Bears 29-7 loss to No. 10 West Chester on Thursday night, tying his career high with a game-high 11 tackles.
Mike Doty (Central Bucks South) caught a career high seven passes for a career best 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the ninth-ranked West Chester Golden Rams to a 29-7 win over host Kutztown Thursday night.
Linebacker Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) recorded 11 tackles in Millersville’s 41-0 loss to No. 12 Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon. Slaton has double-digit stops in five of six games this season.
Defensive end Brandon Gattelli (Bensalem) was credited with 2.5
sacks in East Stroudsburg’s 49-21 win over Cheyney on Saturday. The Bensalem grad was tied for the PSAC lead with six sacks entering the weekend. Gattelli has 22.5 career sacks and is tied with three-time All-America outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton).
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle senior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) was tied for fourth after shooting a 70 in the first day of competition at the Temple Invitational on Saturday at the 6,670-yard par 70 North Course at Philmont Country Club. Alec Kissel (Plymouth Whitemarsh) shot a 77. Temple held a three-stroke lead over Hartford after the first day. Earlier in the week, Teesdale shot a 73 and finished tied for 46th overall with a 225 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. Temple finished in a tie for 10th out of 18 teams.
La Salle senior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) carded a 79 (+9) to tie for 55th in the opening round of the Temple Invitational on Saturday.
West Chester senior Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) finished tied for 10th overall with a 233 at the Challenge at Mystic Rock on Monday. West Chester placed fourth as a team.
Millersville’s Rodney Anders (Souderton), who opened with a 4-over-par 76, shot an 83 in the second round and an 87 in the third round of the Challenge of Mystic Rock last weekend. Millersville finished seventh in the 14-team field.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Kutztown junior Hope Giordano (Council Rock South) carded a school record 73 on Saturday to come from behind and win the Sally Carroll Open by one stroke for her second consecutive tournament victory. Giordano started the day in sixth place after shooting an 82 in the opening round of Seton Hill University’s home invitational. Her 73 on Saturday not only was a nine-stroke improvement and the lowest round of the day, but it broke the school record for lowest score on a par 70 course.
Giordano was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5 after winning first place overall and helping Kutztown to the tournament trophy at its annual KU Fall Invitational. The junior transferred to KU from Emmanuel College in Georgia this season, and it was her first individual title as a Golden Bear. After shooting a tournament best 79 in the opening round, Giordano followed up with a consistent performance in the second round, carding an 80 on her way to first place. Giordano finished five strokes ahead of second place Lacey Bensing of West Chester and led the field with 21 pars to go along with three birdies. Giordano leads the Golden Bears with a 79.6 average through eight rounds so far this season.
Middlebury senior Jordan Glatt (Central Bucks East) finished in a tie for 16th with a 165 (81-84) at the Williams Fall Invitational last Sunday. Middlebury placed fifth as a team.
MEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Ryan New (Hatboro-Horsham) scored his first career goal to propel Cabrini to a 1-0 overtime win at Immaculata on Tuesday.
Tyler Sablyak (Central Bucks West) contributed on a goal in Lock Haven’s 4-3 win at Gannon on Saturday.
Alex Lean (Council Rock North) netted his second goal of the season in the 72nd minute in West Chester’s 3-2 loss to Philadelphia University on Monday.
Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) recorded six saves in Penn State Abington’ 2-1 loss to Keuka on Saturday.
Sophomore Ben Marks (Central Bucks East) scored on a header in Lafayette’s 3-2 double overtime loss to Holy Cross on Saturday.
Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) beat the keeper inside the near post for a goal that spotted La Salle a 1-0 lead, but Fordham came back to earn a 3-1 win on Friday.
Mike Bamford (Central Bucks West) deflected away a corner kick to stymie a Gannon threat in Bloomsburg’s dramatic 2-1 overtime win over Gannon Wednesday. A shot by Austin Transue (Neshaminy) during regulation was denied with a great diving save. In Saturday’s 2-1 loss to No. 14 Mercyhurst, Bamford started the Huskies’ lone scoring play with a throw-in to Transue, who crossed ahead to teammate Nick Izzo for the score that gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
Jeff Wolf (Souderton) set up a goal with a free kick in East Stroudsburg’s 2-1 win over Georgian Court on Monday. The win was the third in four games for ESU.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Gwynedd Mercy junior Theo Horozoglou (Council Rock South) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Honor Roll for the week ending Oct. 5. The Rock South grad scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Keystone, the second coming with 1:41 in regulation to help the Griffins stay unbeaten in CSAC play. She is second on the team with six goals but first on the squad with three game winners. Her six tallies have her tied for third in the CSAC.
Horozoglou and Diamond Devereaux (Springfield) each scored a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-0 win over Cairn on Saturday.
Taylor Gerstenfield (William Tennent) took a corner kick that set up the game-winning goal in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win at Mansfield on Saturday.
Senior Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) scored the game’s lone goal in the 18th minute in Holy Family’s 1-0 win at Nyack College on Saturday.
Senior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute, and Gettysburg earned its third straight victory, blanking Swarthmore 1-0 in a Centennial Conference match Saturday.
Freshman Megan Schafer (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in No. 7 Penn State’s 2-0 win over No. 13 Wisconsin last Sunday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Elizabethtown’s 1-0 win over Susquehanna on Friday. In Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Washington, Cerankowski tied her career high with her eighth goal of the season at the 51:00 mark.
Haley Mangiaruga (North Penn) contributed an assist in No. 12 West Chester’s 1-0 win over Clarion on Saturday.
Kayla Nolan (Abington) tallied her 13th and 14th goals of the season – the second on a penalty kick – in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 win over Keuka on Saturday. Teammate Jennifer Cifuentes (Bensalem) added a goal.
Alexis Haug (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Ursinus College’s 2-1 win over Haverford on Wednesday.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Tim Ware (Central Bucks South) was selected captain of the University of Delaware men’s swimming and diving team for the 2014-15 season. The CB South grad posted two top five finishes at the Colonial Athletic Association championships in 2014 when he placed fourth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 400 medley relay. Ware competed at the AT&T Winter National Championships in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week on Dec. 9. A member of the of the National College Athlete Honor Society, Ahrens, a senior marketing major, is on the Delaware all-time top 10 lists in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke and 200 medley relay events.
Ware finished first in both the 100 back (57.40) and 200 back (1:54.07) in Delaware’s sweep of Georgetown (176-117) and Saint Francis (194-95) on Saturday. He also was part of the 200 medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:35.45.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Lauren Ahrens (Central Bucks South) was selected captain of the University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team for the 2014-15 season. The CB South grad is on the Delaware women’s all-time top 10 list in the 50 and 100 backstroke and in the 200 individual medley. Ahrens, a health and physical education major, is a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Ahrens finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:12.53 in Delaware’s tri-meet that saw the Blue Hens defeat Georgetown 160-135 and Saint Francis (Pa.) 194-95.
MEN’S TENNIS
Mohammed Ammouni (Bensalem) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-2 win in Penn State Abington’s 8-1 win over Arcadia on Tuesday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had a team high 18 digs and three service aces in UMBC’s 3-1 win over UMass Lowell on Friday. In last Sunday’s 3-2 win over Hartford, Griffith led the defense with 21 digs.
Freshman Melanie Ingram (Upper Merion) had a match high 15 kills and a .333 attack percentage in Holy Family’s 3-1 win over Felician on Friday. Senior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) finished with 23 set assists to go along with eight digs in the two sets. Freshman Cecilia Weir (William Tennent) added six digs and two service aces. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Chestnut Hill, Melanie Ingram led the Tigers with 17 kills to go along with 16 digs. Devyn Ingram paced the offense with 36 set assists and totaled a season-high 22 digs.
Junior Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had six assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 win at Rosemont on Tuesday.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) notched 13 kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-2 loss to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. In last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Bryn Mawr, Harvey had 13 kills and a .375 hitting percentage.
Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) collected 46 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-2 win over Hunter College on Saturday. She had 26 assists in the Nittany Lions’ 3-1 loss to Kenyon College earlier in the day. In Friday’s split at the Rowan Invitational, Nelson was credited with 42 assists and nailed two aces.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor McCartney (Pennsbury) had six kills in Ursinus College’s 3-0 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had four kills in Kutztown’s 3-0 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday and had a team-high 12 kills with just one error for a .550 hitting percent on 20 swings in Kutztown’s 3-0 loss to IUP. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Clarion, Stringer hit .500 with 10 kills while Cara Reilly (Pennsbury) had five. In Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to Wilmington University, Stringer recorded her second highest attack percentage this season (.522). The junior tallied 13 kills, also her second best this season, with only one error, while leading the team with five blocks. Reilly had her second best kills output this season with nine.
