CB South’s Jake Jaffe Captures SOL Golf Tournament Title

WARMINSTER — Jake Jaffe had the kind of day most golfers can only dream about.

First, the Central Bucks South golfer won the Suburban One League boys golf championship with a 5-under par 66. That was six shots better than the two golfers who finished tied for second.

Then, with that 66, he may have set a course record for 5 Ponds Golf Course. The old record is also 66 but it was set on the white set of tees, which would give Jaffe the course record for the blue tees that the championship used.

In the course of the 66, he had two eagles, which are scores that are two strokes under par for the holes.

OK, Jake, what about the course record?

“I knew the course record was 6-under, but I didn’t know about it from the blue tees,” he said. 

When told he may have the record for the blue tees, he said, “Yeah, maybe.”

When asked about the eagles, his eyes lit up.

“On 12, I had 220 in,” he said. “I hit a 3-hybrid, and it landed in the hole and then it bounced out. Then I had about three feet for eagle and I made it.”

How about on Hole 14?

First a bit of an explanation. He hit his drive on the 364-yard par 4 to what he said was 68 yards from the cup.

He then took a 56-degree wedge for his next shot.

“It landed about two inches (from the cup) and spun back in,” he explained.

In addition to the two eagles, Jaffe also had two birdies and one bogey. He shot a 35 for the front nine and a 31 on the back.

According to Jaffe, his driver was his best club.

“I hit every fairway I think,” he said. “I hit a lot of fairways. That helped a lot.”

Ty Sheftic from Wissahickon and Pennridge’s Andy Narzisi finished tied for second at 1-over 72. But it was a very different day for the two of them.

Narzisi had a good day on the greens while Sheftic didn’t fare as well.

“My putting today was very good,” said Narzisi. “I made a lot of putts on the back nine.”

Sheftic didn’t.

“I had about 10 putts from inside 12 feet, and I only made two of them and one was a tap-in,” he said. “The greens played really well.”

And then in contrast, Sheftic’s wedge play was strong while Narzisi struggled.

“Wedges were great today,” Sheftic said. “I had a ton of shots inside 100 yards and consistently got a lot of them within 10 feet.”

For Narzisi, not so much, especially on the front nine.

“I was hitting my wedges bad (on the front nine),” he said. “I just couldn’t get anything going until the back.

“I started to drop putts. I just felt very confident out there.”

All three of the top finishers this year will be among the 40 SOL golfers advancing to the PIAA District One golf championships on Monday, October 5, and Tuesday, October 6, at Raven’s Claw Golf Club and Turtle Creek Golf Course. On Monday, the boys will play Raven’s Claw, and the girls will play Turtle Creek. On Tuesday, after a cut, both boys and girls will play Turtle Creek.

Pennridge, Wissahickon and Souderton led the way with five golfers moving on to districts. They are followed by Central Bucks South with four, Upper Dublin and Central Bucks East with three, Central Bucks West, North Penn, Abington, Quakertown and Bensalem with two each and Council Rock North, Springfield, Hatboro-Horsham, Pennsbury and Upper Moreland with one each. New Hope-Solebury also qualified one golfer for the Class AA portion of districts, Corvin Bridge with an 86.
