PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 5, UPPER DUBLIN 4 (10 innings)

Spencer Rosen earned the win in relief with two shutout innings.
By the numbers: Plymouth Whitemarsh: Gabe Caucci (2-for-3, RBI, 2R), Ryan Heincer (2-for-4 , 2B, 2RBI)

Upper Dublin: Austin Dahl (2-for-3, 2B, HR, RBI, R), Wesley Gill (2-for-3)
Key innings: Top of first: Heincer collected a one-out RBI single. (1-0)
Top of third: Caucci and Mason Eagland opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on Heincer’s groundout to the right side. Caucci scores on a UD miscue, and Eagland crossed the plate on Sam Stolzer’s sac fly to center. (3-0)
Bottom of fifth: Austin Dahl hit a solo home run to left field to lead off inning. Conor Dynan was hit by pitch, and Evan Sanders singled. Both runners advanced on sacrifice bunt by Noah Gibbs. Eric Berman delivered a two-out, two-run single. (3-3)
Bottom of sixth: Ben Wilkins drew a one-out walk and scored on an error on Dahl’s double to left field. (3-4).
Top of seventh: Tommy Baron was hit by pitch to lead off inning, advanced to second on a groundout and scored when Caucci delivered a two-out line drive single to center field. (4-4).
Top of 10th: Lucas Fresta led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Caucci and moved up to third on groundout. Heincer’s two-out double plated Festa with a run that turned out to be the game-winner. (5-4)
Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Chris Manero: “The three games series is new to all of us, so I think every week, especially early in the season, is going to bring a lot of excitement and uncertainty. Add an extra innings game to that mix and it just adds to the intrigue.
“We have a big mix of younger and more experienced players on our roster this year, and so far we are using them all. Today, it was our more seasoned guys that led the way.”
–The game: “Jake (Rauscher) gave us a gutsy start on the mound today. We were so deep in senior pitching last year that it was tough to get him as many innings as I’m sure he would have liked. But he is a throwback type of player, and he will always be ready when it’s his turn. We will rely on him a lot this year, so to see that he can be efficient enough to give us eight full innings is so important.
“Two other seniors, and our captains, Caucci and Heincer, came up very big for us today in big spots- early in the game and of course late in the game. Spencer is a junior who is getting his first crack at the varsity mound today, and his two innings of relief in the 9th and 10th inning on a chilly day were huge for us. He peppered the strike zone and did exactly what you want a relief pitcher to do late in a game. The three-game series setup will likely mean we will use a lot of arms out of the bullpen, and it will be fun getting a lot of opportunities spread across our roster.
–Delivering in the clutch: “We didn’t get the results we wanted to in our first few games out of the gate. But my assistant coach, Rich Coletta, and I were discussing earlier today how, despite a few losses, we have been in every game and just needed to get a few things right at the same time. I thought today our approach at the plate was methodical, our defense played really well, and our guys stayed very focused on improving some of the deficiencies from yesterday. It was a full team effort today without a doubt.”
Up next: Plymouth Whitemarsh (1-3, 1-1 SOL) will host Upper Dublin (4-1, 3-1) in the second game of the three-game series Wednesday.

Non-league
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 14, PENN CHARTER 11
In a high-scoring non-league battle, the Patriots led 7-6 after three innings, but in the bottom of the inning, Penn Charter put five runs on the board to go on top 11-7.
East got one of those runs back in the fifth and took a lead they would not lose with six in sixth.
All told, the Patriots had 16 hits, led by the three-hit effort of Nolan Behm, who had a triple and three RBIs.
“We hit all game,” East coach Kyle Dennis said. “We did a great job defensively all game.
“It’s early in the season, and we’re trying to figure out who our pitchers are and just trying to piece it together. These guys haven’t thrown to a lot of live hitters much. We’re trying to figure out who our arms are.
“We figured some stuff out today, but we flat out just hit all game.”
By the numbers: Nolan Behm (3-for-5, 3B, 3RBI,1R), Chase Fulford (2-for-4, 3B, RBI, 3R), Colin Lynch (2-for-4, 3B, 1RBI, 1R), Anthony Niro (2-for-5, 1R)
Michael Colbert (W) (4.0 IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 4K)
By the innings: Bottom of fourth: Penn Charter capitalized on two hit batters, two walks as well as two singles and a double to plate five runs. (7-11)
Top of fifth: Behm RBI single to right field. (8-11)
Top of sixth: Back-to-back singles by Nick Mutchler and Niro. Sean Hill Jr was safe on an error and a run scored. Jack Thompson hit a two-run triple by, Brendan Keiser followed with an RBI single to center, and then came a two-run single by Behm. (14-11).
Central Bucks East coach Kyle Dennis: “It was insanity – there were five half innings where there were zeroes of the 14. Kudos to them for competing, kudos to us for competing even though we were down late.”
–Key hits: “Jack Thompson had a huge triple with the bases loaded in the sixth inning that tied the game up for us. Jack is a senior, and he was an important piece of our puzzle last year, and he had a bases-clearing triple to tie the game, which is absolutely awesome for him. He gets a lot of credit for that.
“Following him is a sophomore Brendan Keiser, and in one of his first varsity at-bats enters in the DH spot and gets a single to score Thompson and we take a lead. That was big.”
–Props: “Michael Colbert, our winning pitcher, is a sophomore, getting his first impactful varsity innings – coming into a game that probably no pitcher wants to pitch in because everyone is hitting the ball all over the place. He got his first varsity win, which is awesome for him. He ended up going four innings, which is more than we were planning on throwing him, but he only gave up a couple hits, a couple earned runs, a couple of strikeouts. He had a really, really good outing. He got our game card today – we give our lineup card that we post in the dugout. One guy gets it every single game, and it’s the guy that has the most impact on the day. Today, it could have gone to a lot of guys. Although we had tons of runs and although Thompson had a big hit, Colbert is the guy that kept the game in check for us for the second half.”

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6, WILLIAM TENNENT 1
Reed Curtier and Ryan Gallagher combined for a no-hitter that is even more remarkable considering the duo combined for 21 strikeouts. One Tennent player reached first on a dropped third strike, so only one out was recorded by a fielder – Henry Perotti’s popup to second baseman Jake Andrews with one out in the third inning.
Curtier fanned 14 – including the 100th of his career – in 4.2 innings. Gallagher had seven Ks.
The Golden Hawks scored all the runs they would need in a two-run second.
Tennent plated its only run in the top of the sixth , capitalizing on back-to-back walks and a Rock South miscue.
By the numbers: Reed Curtier (W) (4.2 IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 14K), Ryan Gallagher (2.1 IP, 0H 1R, OER, 6BB, 7K).
Key inning: Bottom of second: Curtier had the lone hit – an RBI single – in an inning that included a hit batter and a walk. (2-0).
Bottom of third: Jake Maurer’s RBI single was the only hit of the inning that included an error and dropped third strike (4-0).
Bottom of fifth: Johnny Mendola singled, stole second and scored on Zak Abt’s single. Ryan Hickey also had a single in the inning, and Jake Andrews delivered a sac fly for the inning’s second run. (6-0)
Council Rock South coach Greg Paprocki: “Always nice to get a win on our home field. Reed Curtier was dominant today giving up 0 hits and striking out 14 in just 4.2 innings of work. He also struck out his 100th hitter in his career which is a tremendous milestone.
Ryan Gallagher followed up Curtier to complete the combined no hitter. I am extremely proud of him. He has had some command issues and is working extremely hard to improve.
“As a team we’re moving in the right direction. We need to improve every day and be ready when we start league play on Monday.”
Up next: Council Rock South (2-1) will host Abington in a non-league game Wednesday, and William Tennent (1-2) will host Wissahickon in a non-league game Thursday.
