ABINGTON 81, THE VILLAGES CHARTER ACADEMY 72
The prestigious Mantverde Academy Invitational Tournament – which came to an end on Saturday – included eight nationally and state ranked squads. Abington proved that it belonged, coming within a missed 3-pointer of finishing the tournament 2-1 with its only loss by eight points to nationally ranked Findlay Prep (Nev.).
As it was, the Ghosts were 1-2 with an impressive win over The Villages on Saturday to close out the tournament. It is the third straight game the Ghosts scored more than 80 points.
“It seems like that’s what teams like to do down here – they like to get up and down the floor,” coach Charles Grasty said. “You have to make shots to score in the 80s.
“This is another team that wanted to run. They press a little bit, try and turn you over and get easy baskets. On offense, they run their offense, but they’re looking to attack, attack, attack. They don’t make many passes on their offensive end.”
The Ghosts led 21-16 at the end of one quarter and took a 36-28 lead into halftime.
“Although it didn’t seem like we got any stops, I still thought we got out in transition,” Grasty said. “We weren’t afraid to attack after a made basket. I thought we did a good job with that.
“We were used to – when someone scores on us, we’ll walk it up and get into an offense, but in this tournament, we were just able to get it out and go. A lot of teams pick up at half court or they’ll man press you. I think our guards were good enough to just go by them.”
The Villages, which boasted a 15-4 record entering Saturday’s game, trimmed Abington’s lead to 50-49 heading into the final quarter. The Ghosts closed out the game with a 31-23 burst to put an exclamation on the win.
“We got really big stops late in the game,” Grasty said. “It was a three-point game, we got a stop and came down and scored. A little under a minute they started fouling us. We went 16-for-18 from the line in the fourth quarter.
“That team is good. They’re not very big, but they’re scrappy, and they just make shots. They had a kid who’s a junior and is the third rated guard in Florida. It just seems like every team has players, so we had to step up.”
The Ghosts proved they have their share of players as well. Eric Dixon – who is averaging 25.0 points a game – had another big night for the Ghosts, finishing with 30 points, which included a 7-for-11 effort at the foul line. He completed the double-double with 10 rebounds.
Robbie Heath also had a huge game with 24 points – which included two 3-pointers, six steals, four rebounds and three assists. He was 8-for-10 at the line. Lucas Monroe added 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists, and Darius Brown had a season-high 11 points.
“We obviously dumped it in to Eric a lot,” Grasty said. “Robbie Heath was able to get to the basket.
“Lucas did everything again – he had a bunch of rebounds, a bunch of steals and a bunch of assists.”
Grasty also tipped his hat to his bench players.
“They all helped, they all contributed in their own way,” the Ghosts’ coach said. “Xavier Crawford played really well. Bryan Coffman played well.”
Crawford contributed four assists off the bench for a Ghost squad that can only benefit from the opportunity to play against the best.
“I don’t know if we’re going to see teams that like to get up and down the floor like that, but we’re going to use this, watch film and try to make teams get up and down the floor with us,” Grasty said. “I feel that once we started doing that – I felt like we were able to get easy baskets and made them take shots they weren’t used to taking and they were kind of uncomfortable.
“We’ll watch it to see what we need to do to start forcing some teams to play up tempo, and hopefully, we’ll learn from this trip.”
