WILLIAM TENNENT 54, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 50
The Panthers won a thriller at New Hope-Solebury on Saturday.
Tennent jumped out to an early 13-5 lead, but foul trouble and turnovers at the end of the first quarter allowed the Lions to close out the quarter on an 8-3 run to make it a 16-13 game at the end of one quarter. Foul woes continued to plague the Panthers in the second quarter as three of their five starters were forced to sit with two fouls each, and they trailed 30-27 at the intermission.
"It was a tough first half," coach Laura Whitney said. "We couldn't catch a break with the fouls. Some of them were bad plays on our part and out of frustration, but others, we just got caught in the wrong position. Our three leading scorers picked up two fouls each and were forced to sit most of the first half. We had to play a freshman and sophomore who really don't have a lot of varsity experience, but I thought they gave us some productive minutes."
The Panthers continued to battle foul trouble in the third quarter and trailed 39-35 heading into the final quarter. The two teams connected on foul shots in the quarter's early minutes, and the Lions held a 40-38 lead. On the Panthers' ensuing possession, Brianna Broccardi was fouled and went to the line to shoot two. She buried the first but fell short on the second, but Kelly Scipione was there for the rebound and found Broccardi for a layup that gave the Panthers a 41-40 lead.
The Lions went back on top 44-41, but Tennent scored on its next two possessions to go on top 45-44. NHS knotted the score 45-45, but Emma Stanfield went on a 6-0 personal tear to give the Panthers control of the game. Her first basket came on a putback, and after drawing a foul pulling down a defensive rebound, Stanfield buried both ends of a one-and-one. She came up with a steal on the Lions' next possession and once again connected on a pair at the foul line to put the Panthers on top 51-45. The Lions extended the lead to 54-47 before Rachell Saxton hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 54-50 final.
"It was certainly an exciting game, and I'm so proud of how we executed down the stretch," Whitney said. "We were in a similar situation on Thursday at North Penn, and I didn't think we did a good job of finishing that game. We didn't get stops when we needed to and made some poor decisions offensively late in the game.
"Those are the games we have to learn from, and I thought tonight we showed some growth. We were in foul trouble the entire game and had a freshman in during the final minute, but we answered their runs and made big plays when we needed to and, more importantly, made free throws when they counted. It was a great team win."
Stanfield led the way with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jess Rutkowsky also finished in double figures with 10, which included a pair of clutch threes. Kelly Scipione added eight points and two steals, Haley Crossley had seven, and Broccardi had six.
