Non-league
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 62, WILLIAM TENNENT 55
Tennent capitalized on seven trips to the foul line in the first quarter (the Panthers buried all seven) to open up an early 15-14 advantage. The Hawks erased that with a 21-14 second quarter to go into halftime with a 35-29 lead. The two teams basically exchanged baskets in a second half that saw the Hawks hold a 27-26 advantage.
Key players: Junior Lucian Mirc’s 24 points – which included six 3-pointers – led the Golden Hawks. Ryan Delp added 13 points – nine in the first quarter, and Anthony Sestito contributed nine points.
Tennent was led by Tre Stracuzzi (15 points) and Ayden Davis-Carter (12 points).
Council Rock South coach James Cassidy:
–The game: “It was a hard-fought game that we made a little bit harder on ourselves in the last two minutes. Tennent presents a unique challenge with how many 3s they shoot and make, and so I was proud of our guys for the most part for remembering the scouting report and bringing energy the morning after a big win the night before.”
–Props: “We hung in through some first half foul trouble. Senior guard Patrick Malone gave us really outstanding minutes; he did what he does best, which is play scrappy on defense, keep us settled in offense, and he was a senior leader for us. Additionally, Ryan Delp was a weapon once again, both in the mid-range and from 3.
“But we couldn’t have won the game without huge contributions from two juniors, Lucian Mirc and Anthony Sestito. Lu is a ‘bucket-getter,’ and now that he’s really getting comfortable playing in our half court sets he’s extremely dangerous. He went off for 24 today, and we needed all of them.
“Anthony has been fighting for minutes, and we just couldn’t take him off the court today given his defense, rebounding, and timely scoring, including a huge corner 3 in the second half.”
Up next: Council Rock South will face West Chester Rustin in an opening round game of the Garnet Valley Holiday Tournament on Saturday. William Tennent will travel to Council Rock North for a crossover non-league game on Monday.
