Check out the recaps for SOL girls’ basketball teams in action Saturday.

Non-league
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 46, CONWELL-EGAN 30
The two teams battled to an 8-8 tie after one quarter, but the Golden Hawks took control of the game with a 17-6 second quarter that was highlighted by eight points from Gillian Martin. They led the rest of the way.
Key players: Emerson Gunther’s 15 points – 10 in the second half – led the Hawks. Ruby Bross had a career high 12 points. Gillian Martin added 11 points, which included three 3-pointers.
Council Rock South coach Steve Polinsky: “We played a very good overall team game today. We had great ball movement today and everyone played well. Bella Hettler and Anabelle Kushch controlled the boards and were solid the whole game. Emerson (Gunther) continued her hot shooting this season scoring 15 points today. Gillian Martin added 11 points and played a great overall game today.
Props: “Ruby did an excellent job running the offense and handling the basketball. Ruby has played really well and she is getting more comfortable running the team.”

PENNSBURY 61, PENN WOOD 21
Showing no ill effects from playing a game less than 24 hours earlier, the Falcons raced out of the gate to a 26-0 lead after one quarter on their way to the mercy rule win.
“We were very thankful that Penn Wood’s coaching staff came to our Coaches versus Cancer coaching clinic that we had last spring,” Pennsbury coach Frank Sciolla said. “We started a connection with them and agreed to play a game. We were hoping to play at the Shoebox (their gym), but there were heating issues with their school, so the game was moved to a middle school.
“They were also without their best player. She was a first team all-league guard, and they were extremely dependent on her, and without her, they were not able to get anything going in terms of running their offense,”
Sammie Haws – whose 14 first-quarter points sparked the Falcons – led Pennsbury with 16 points. Milan Reeves added 11 – nine in the second half. Joley Homan had nine points.
Reeves and sophomore Grace Schaufler (6 points) recorded career highs.
Pennsbury coach Frank Sciolla:
–The game: “We were able to push the ball and get baskets in transition and a number of really good passes from Joley (Hohman), Sammie (Haws) and Shea (Quenzer) helped create some really good scoring opportunities
“Milan Reeves did a really good job scoring the ball today, and we were happy for her because she gives us so much on the defensive end and she has such a valuable role, and today she was able to attack and knock some shots down. She deserves it. She is the true definition of a program kid, and she has really improved so much in the last 18 months. She had her career high in points and so did Grace Schaufler, who plays a similar role for us as Milan when it comes to defending and on the backboard. We have never had a good team in my memory that didn’t have players like Milan and Grace that are willing to sacrifice and make winning plays even if they’re not going to get many touches on the offensive end
–Looking ahead: “The level of competition that we will face is going to take a severe precipitous climb starting next Saturday with Bishop Eustace. They match up really well with us, and we are going to have to see how we handle adversity. Our schedule really takes a turn in January, so now, more than ever, will be a time for us to lock in, keep supporting each other, get better and have fun.”
Up next: Pennsbury will face Bishop Eustace on Saturday when the Falcons compete in the Winter Chill Challenge at Notre Dame High School (N.J.).

SIDWELL FRIENDS 55, UPPER DUBLIN 51
The Flying Cardinals traveled to New Jersey to participate in the Shore Games on Saturday and faced a Sidwell Friends team that last year finished the season ranked sixth in the country.
UD proved it could play with an elite squad. The Cards trailed 18-14 after one quarter but outscored Sidwell Friends 13-6 in the second and took a 27-24 lead into halftime. Tamia Clark’s 10 points led the Cards in the half.
Sidwell Friends answered with a 17-4 third quarter burst, and although the Cardinals battled – scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter, they could not make up the ground they lost.
“Their point guard is going to Duke, and they have two other guards going to Princeton,” UD coach Morgan Funsten said. “They have a big who has a bunch of offers, but I don’t think she’s decided where she’s going yet. She really hurt us, just her size and her strength. She was a big girl, and we don’t have the biggest size.
“I scheduled about six of these games this year, and good or bad, I think it can only make us better. This was our first true test. To be honest, we faced very little adversity in our first six games this year, and whether it was the fall or last season, we didn’t always respond the best to adversity.
“It was a challenge I put out, and I think we were in a much better spot having playing the game today than we were prior to today, and for that reason, it was a very productive day. I think the girls are super hungry to get back out and play another team of that caliber. Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to play them again, but we did so many good things today and competed at a high level.”
Key players: Tamia Clark’s 18 points led UD. She also had six rebounds and four steals. Ella Morris added 11 points, and Megan Ngo had 10 to go along with five assists and three steals.
Upper Dublin coach Morgan Funsten:
–The game: “Sidwell Friends was on ESPN last week. I’d never scouted a team on ESPN before, and it was really a cool situation. We were in position to win the game today. We were up three at halftime, and they made a huge run. They outscored us 17-4 in the third quarter, and that was when our girls – maybe in the past, younger and less experienced – would have just kind of folded, but we fought back and got it to two and had multiple shots to tie the game.
“So it was a really special effort all day. I thought we deserved a little better, but it was definitely a day to get better.”
–Props: “Tamia Clark played at a high level all day. She held the Princeton girl (Ava Yoon) to four points.
“Meg (Ngo) did a really good job on (Autumn) Fleary, who’s their point guard. Fleary was in foul trouble, and a big reason was because of Meg. We held Fleary to one in the first half. She went off for 21 points in the second half, so she did have a chance. A credit to her, she made tough shots. She was going to the basket and getting on the line.”
–Battling Sidwell’s size: “Their big girl – when they have great perimeter shooting and they have a big and they have ridiculous guards, you have to pick your poison. Our ‘post players’ battled down there. Unfortunately, we gave up some second chance points, which wasn’t really anybody’s fault other than we didn’t have the size and the strength they had.
“I think this game really made us a hungrier team, and that’s a good thing because this team is special.”
Up next: Upper Dublin will face Notre Dame on Sunday, Dec. 28, as part of the Cardinal O’Hara Holiday Tournament.

DOWNINGTOWN WEST 52, WILLIAM TENNENT 39
The Panthers found themselves on the short end of a 19-5 score after one quarter, and although they played the Whippets close the rest of the way, they never could dig themselves out of that early hole.
Senior Avery Kocur scored 20 points – which included three 3-pointers – lo lead the Panters. Halie Staub added 10 points – all in the fourth quarter.
William Tennent coach Laura Whitney:
“Tough loss today to a really good Downingtown West team. Their size and physicality definitely affected us. I thought we did a poor job of executing offensively and matching their toughness the first half, and it turned out to be the difference in the game.
“I was proud of the fight our girls showed the second half. We battled back to get it to 10 with about four minutes left and had opportunities to get it to seven or eight, but it was a little too much to overcome, and then we had to start fouling.
“It may not have been the result we were hoping for, but it’s an opportunity to evaluate where we need to improve so we can continue to get better.”
Up next: William Tennent will face Owen J Roberts on Dec. 29 in the opening game of the Upper Merion Holiday Tournament.
