CHELTENHAM 70, FRANKFORD 66
Khalil White turned in a monster 26-point effort – which included three three-pointers – to lead Cheltenham to the title of the Panthers Tipoff Tournament. The senior guard was named MVP of the tournament.
“He made all-conference last year and is a three-year starter,” coach John Timms said. “He’s off to a great start with the tournament MVP – he had 26 tonight and 19 last night and is off to a very, very good offensive start.”
White was joined on the all-tournament team by Trevonn Pitts, who also had a big night with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers, who led 14-7 after one quarter, opened up a 35-25 lead at halftime only to watch Frankford battle back to make it a game down the stretch.
“It was a real good game,” Timms said. “We were up and they came back and made it a great championship game. We thought we had it won before we had it won.”
The tournament title was the first in Timms’ three years at the helm, and more importantly, it represented his team’s best start.
“My first year we started out 1-8, and last year we started out 2-6, so you’re talking about getting off to a very, very slow start,” the Panthers’ coach said. “We had to fight our way back to make the playoffs, so it was important for us to get off to a quick start this year.
“Right now everything seems to be on course with what we set out for this summer. We set out to win our first tipoff tournament, and I’m so elated for the guys. We set a small goal and were able to attain it. I think that’s big moving forward for the season.”
Frankford’s Francesco Compo, who finished with 16 points, also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Cheltenham (2-0) will open SOL play on Thursday at Upper Merion.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 48, JENKINTOWN 39
The Patriots opened their season by captured the title of the 2015 Rabberman Tipoff Tournament at Council Rock South, opening up a 22-15 halftime lead and never looking back.
“It’s always important to get off to a good start,” coach Erik Henrysen said. “Having our guys healthy is a big plus.
“We’ve had a good start to the season in terms of practice, and it carried over into the games. Guys have matured off of last year, and of course, seeing Tommy Strasburger come back from football and kind of re-acclimate back to basketball has been a pretty quick process, so it’s been nice to see him get into a groove quickly.”
Strasburger and Elijah Seger both were named to the all-tournament squad. Strasburger shared team scoring honors with 11 points while Seger added 10. Justin O’Neil also finished with 11 points to go along with nine rebounds. Matt Pattyson added eight points and five assists while Ryan Plack added four points and six rebounds.

PENNRIDGE 56, METHACTON 32
The Rams took an 8-5 lead into the second quarter and then turned on the afterburners, outscoring the Warriors 22-2 to seize control of the game on their way to a title in the Pennridge Memorial Tipoff Tournament on Saturday night.
“The first quarter coach (Jeff) Derstine did a good job,” coach Dean Behrens said. “He was really trying to slow us down, and we’re trying to get in transition.
“We weren’t hitting shots. I still feel like we were playing pretty good defense. In the second quarter, I really thought our defense propelled our offense and allowed us to get some easy shots. I think the kids gained some confidence, and all of a sudden, we went on a 22-0 run. That demoralized them.”
Danny Long (14 points) and Max Wagner (12 points) led a balanced Ram attack. Ryan Cuthbert added nine points, and Ryan Kinky, six points.
No Methacton player had more than six points in a contest that – after the first quarter – was played at a high tempo.
“They’re a little bit of a younger team, and you could see it in their eyes – their big kid was tired from running up and down the floor because we’re trying to play fast,” Behrens said. “We were able to come out the second half and continue playing well. We have 11 guys on the bench, and we played 11 guys. They played hard, and they played well together.”
The tournament title erased memories of last year’s opening round 76-65 loss to Saucon Valley.
“Our guys took care of business,” Behrens said. “They really wanted to win the tournament because of what happened last year.
“We went 25-5, but we were 0-1 to start the season. Last year we played the consolation game, and I was home by eight o’clock. This year Danny Long and Steve Lowry – our captains – kept the boys focused.”
Pennridge (2-0) will host William Tennent in a non-league game on Tuesday before beginning league play next Friday.
“Now the work begins – scouting and late nights figuring things out,” Behrens said.

PENNSBURY 48, ST. JOE’S PREP 43
The Falcons used a superb team effort to defeat the Prep in a Scholastic Play by Play Classic contest at Widener University. Mark Flagg led the Falcons with 15 points while Addison Howard, Tyler Sessa-Reeves and Joey Monaghan each added seven points.
“It was very balanced, but our defense was really key,” coach Bill Coleman said. “They scored seven points in the fourth quarter, but we held them to four for the longest time before they hit a three when we were already up eight.
“Our defense was solid, and we were able to rebound the ball pretty well. We kept the tempo in our favor and that was huge.”
Pennsbury was up one at halftime, and the two teams were tied 36-36 heading into the final quarter when the Falcons took over at both ends of the court.
“We were able to take advantage of some things we saw offensively and roll with it from there,” Coleman said. “This was huge for our young guys.
“Summertime is not really indicative of how you’re going to end up playing during the fall and winter. Expectations are high. We always are put against high level teams because of last year.
“We struggled early on in the summer and have progressed. We’re not even close to being ready, but it was a good step, and I’m so proud of all the guys who worked their tails off to get to that point. Now we have to remain focused and work on the next day ahead.”
Pennsbury (1-0) will host Abington in the SOL opener for both teams on Thursday.

QUAKERTOWN 91, ROXBOROUGH 85 (OT)
Griffin Schmidt is playing on a bum knee, but don’t try telling Roxborough that. The senior sharpshooter lit up the net for 43 points in a brilliant offensive showing in the consolation game of the Radnor Tournament.
Griffin connected on 12-of-23 shots from the floor and also buried 17-of-21 from the foul line. For good measure, he had nine rebounds and four assists.
“We were just running like crazy in the beginning – he was getting layups, he was getting jump shots,” coach Kevin Keeler said. “He only hit two threes.
“He’s been fighting tendinitis in his knee. We’ve been holding him out of a lot of practices, so he’s not in really good shape, and he was dying in this kind of game. I had to pull out a little bit, but he just had it going – inside drives, getting to the foul line. He did it all and shot over 50 percent from the field. I told him after the game – I’ve been coaching for 33 years and this might be as crazy as I’ve seen. I was proud of him.”
Schmidt’s 43-point effort is the most by a Quakertown player since Dave Young scored 47 points against Hatboro-Horsham on Feb. 15, 1980.
The 91 points is believed to be the most since the Panthers scored 100 in a win over Hatboro-Horsham in the early 90s. It is the most points scored by a Keeler-coached team.
“It was pretty wild,” the Panthers’ coach said.
Quakertown scored 23 points in each of the first two quarters en route to a 46-34 halftime lead, and Keeler and his players certainly couldn’t have seen overtime coming when they opened up an 18-point lead in the second quarter.
“They just hitting threes out of nowhere, and we couldn’t stop them,” he said. “They got the lead with less than a minute. With 20 seconds, we were down two, and JR Grimmage put a putback in to tie it up, and they missed a last-second shot.
“In overtime, we took care of business. It was an interesting high school basketball game.”
Also finishing the game in double figures were Charles Ervin (19 points) and Ryan Harrison (11 points). Grimmage and and Nick Drosnock both added seven on a night that saw the Panthers connect on 26-of-38 from the foul line.
Quakertown (1-1) will host Emmaus in a non-league contest on Wednesday.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 34, BISHOP McDEVITT 30
Larry Clark – who was sidelined last season with a torn ACL – is making up for lost time. The Springfield senior put the Spartans on his shoulders in Saturday’s consolation game of the Oreland Lions Tournament and willed his team to a win.
“We were down the whole game,” said coach Gary Nolan, whose team trailed 19-10 at the intermission. “We were down the whole fourth quarter, and then Larry Clark tied it with a little over a minute to go.
“We took the lead with about 15 seconds left, and it was Larry Clark. They came down, and they missed a shot, and Larry Clark rebounded. He got fouled, hit the two fouls shots to put us up four, and that was the game.”
Clark led all scorers with 22 points. Ryan Daly added six points while Ian Frasca had five.
“I only played six guys,” said Nolan, who is minus four players – three starters. “Instead of playing six I’d be playing 10. We are very much undermanned right now. I’ll take a win any way I can get it.”
