NORTH PENN 73, POPE JOHN PAUL II 45
Call it a lesson hard learned.
That was the prevailing sentiment on Saturday when the Maidens talked about Friday night’s 69-50 loss at the hands of Perk Valley that saw the Vikings dominate the paint, blowing open a close game in the second half.
“I think it was definitely a wake-up call,” senior Mikaela Giuliani said. “It’s not like we were all coming out here expecting to win. We knew it was going to be a good game, but I feel as though none of our heads were really in it.
“I know I was in foul trouble, and I fouled out of the game with six minutes left. Obviously, that means my head wasn’t in it. Sam (Carangi) had four fouls, Mia Melchior fouled out, so we had two foul out of our seven varsity players, and that makes it very difficult.
“I think it showed us that we need to have this mental toughness because we weren’t as mentally prepared. We’ve all improved a lot in the offseason, and I think we realize how we have to come to every game mentally prepared and focused all the time. Obviously, last night was really hard for all of us. We were all bummed out. It was not a good time, but looking back, it’s definitely going to help us because we needed that. It definitely woke us up. We’re going to keep going up from here – high hopes.”
The Maidens owned Saturday’s Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament contest from the outset, sprinting to a 21-4 lead after one quarter and never looking back.
Melchior led the Maidens with 17 points while Giuliani and Jess Huber added 16 and 15 points, respectively, after combining for just three points in Friday night’s loss. Bri Hewlett and Irisa Ye both added nine points, and Sam Carangi had six.
“I thought offensively our decision-making was very good,” coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “I thought we ran the floor pretty well.
“Defensively, there were some times when we missed assignments, and that’s something we need to avoid.”
Despite her team’s no-doubt-about-it win, deMarteleire was not content.
“We’re going to spend a lot of time on defensive drills for the next week for sure and then maintain it the rest of the season,” she said. “We need to buckle down on fundamental defense. That’s what our goal will be this week.
“We’re going to work hard and get where we need to be.”
North Penn (1-1) will host Downingtown West in a non-league game on Tuesday night.

BISHOP LOUGHLIN 63, ABINGTON 52 (OT)
The Ghosts extended highly regarded Bishop Loughlin to the limit before falling in overtime in a classic battle on Saturday.
“It was literally – we would go up seven, and they would come back and go up four,” coach Dan Marsh said. “Then we would go up five or six, and then they would go up. It was just back and forth.
“At the end, they were up three, and Jordyn Allen – our sophomore who’s a heck of a player – hit a three with nine seconds to go to send it to overtime. They just took over in overtime. They scored a couple of quick buckets and then pulled it out, and we had to foul. They made their foul shots down the stretch.”
Taking over for Bishop Loughlin in overtime was 5-10 junior point guard Milicia Reid, who led all scorers with 27 points.
“She’s strong,” Marsh said. “At one point when we were up two, she literally said, ‘Give me the ball. I’m going to get a bucket.’
“She said it right in front of our bench, and we could hear it. She went right down and scored. She just has that kind of swagger. We couldn’t stop her.”
The two teams exchanged baskets and found themselves deadlocked 21-21 at the intermission. Bishop Loughlin took a 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter when the Ghosts tied it up, setting the stage for OT.
Allen led the Ghosts with 14 points. Junior Lizzie O’Leary finished the day with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. Brittney James had six points.
