CHELTENHAM 6, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 5
Tim McHugh capped a glittering performance for the Panthers by scoring the game-winning goal with six minutes remaining to break a 5-5 tie. McHugh finished the game with four goals and one assist and also had eight ground balls.
The Panthers, who trailed by one after one quarter, led 5-4 heading into the final quarter after keeping the Lions off the board in the third quarter. New Hope knotted the score early in the fourth, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
"It was back and forth the whole game," coach Mike DiPuppo said. "It was 4-4 at the half, and the guys knew we were in a fight. We had prepared for this.
"We had some close games last year, and we just couldn't find a way to win. We had to find a way to dig deep in a game that was this competitive to find that extra gear. We came right out in the third quarter, scored a nice goal, and we didn't give up a goal right afterwards, which is nice.
"We had a great stand at the end of the third quarter to hold them without a shot. There was about a minute to go in the third when New Hope had the ball in our defensive end. One of their better players was trying to iso Jarrett Ross. He was running Jarrett all over the field, and Jarrett just dominated his man one-on-one in the final minute of the third quarter. We wound up holding them without a shot. It was fantastic."
The Lions knotted the score when the Panthers were a man down early in the fourth.
"Tim McHugh scored on a nice shot to take the lead, and then it was time to find that extra gear," DiPuppo said. "How are we going to stop them? We were fortunate – they had a couple of penalties late in the game, and we were able to run out the last two-and-a-half minutes and wound up with the win.
"We were in the box, and we basically ran out the clock, played a nice two-man with Tim McHugh and Brian Noel and Harry Stackhouse. The offense just really moved the ball and ran the clock out. It was fantastic."
Harry Stackhouse added a goal and an assist. He also had three ground balls. Brian Noel also had a goal and an assist. Daniel Lee was 4-for-10 on face-offs and also had five ground balls.
"The ground ball work and the control Daniel Lee had was really, really important," DiPuppo said. "He actually got hurt early in the fourth quarter, but he wanted to come back in the game and help run out the clock. He played a vital role in that as well."
Jade Siojo led the defense with nine ground balls.
"Our long sticks middies, Jade Siojo and Quentin Gibson, played a really good controlled game," DiPuppo said. "Our defense is starting to come around.
"You hold a team to five goals – I don't care who it is – that's really good to see."
Harvey Miller had a big game in goal, turning away 13 of 18 shots he faced.
"You can't ask for any more than that," DiPuppo said. "A lot of them were in close at crunch time when you needed it.
"Their goalie played phenomenal, Their defense held us in check as well, but our defense stood tall. Harvey hasn't played a lot in goal. He was a defenseman last year, played one game in goal. We didn't have a player, so he stepped in, and he will be our goalie the rest of the year because our back-up broke his leg. He's going to be the man, and he's really stepping into that role nicely."
