CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 14, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 9
The Bucks found themselves staring at an 8-5 deficit at halftime, and something had to change. It certainly did as an inspired West squad outscored the visiting Indians 9-1 after the intermission to earn the hard fought win.
“It was a lot of team effort,” senior captain Brayden Albrecht said of the Bucks’ second-half comeback. “During the first half, we weren’t on the same page as a team, but our chemistry got a lot better during the second half.
“We just started playing a lot more physical. People like Shane Colsher and Billy Timbur were getting after it, and they were getting all the ground balls and shutting down their key guys.”
The Bucks, according to Albrecht, had a little score to settle with the Indians after losing a 12-11 heartbreaker last year.
“I remember last year’s game – we lost by one, and it felt great to come out here and get our team chemistry down,” the senior captain said. “This was important because this is a Suburban One League rival, so to be 2-0 in the league was a really good step for us heading in the right direction.”
Albrecht also credited Matt Jacobsen, who had a huge game for the Bucks, scoring seven goals and winning 9 of 13 faceoffs. Albrecht played a key role in the win as well, finishing with three goals and two assists.
The two teams were deadlocked 3-3 after one quarter, but the Indians outscored their hots 5-2 in the second quarter to go into halftime with the three-goal advantage. A 4-0 third quarter tear gave the Bucks a 9-8 lead, and they put the game away with a 5-1 fourth quarter surge.
“A lot of mid-game adjustments from the coaches really helped us pull out the win,” Albrecht said. “Just designing on the fly different plays to run and different schemes to run, and a lot of credit goes to them.
“But a lot of teamwork came out of halftime too. We finally got our momentum back, and we really wanted to win.”
Also for the Bucks, Alex Greenspan added two goals and an assist while Sean Kelly had a goal and an assist. Zach Martine contributed one goal, and Evan Goldrick had an assist.
Cole Gnutti won five of seven faceoffs as the Bucks dominated the faceoff X. Goalie Will Shandlay was credited with six saves.
“We had a tough loss against Easton in our first game of the season, which we really wanted back,” Albrecht said. “We felt we could have beaten those guys.
“To come out with two Suburban One League wins, it really got us going. One of our coaches mentioned during one of our practices that his confidence was up and we needed to match his confidence if we wanted to go any further in the league. We came out with a tough, gritty win tonight.”
