SOL Colonial Division
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0 (OT)
An early Saturday morning contest between sister schools CB East and CB South lived up to its expectations. It was a nail biter that remained a scoreless draw at the end of regulation. But with less than a minute left in the first overtime, it was Anthony Bice running on a Jackson Tait pass who put the ball past the CB East goalie to give South the road victory.
By the Numbers:
First Half – No Score
Second Half -No Score
Overtime
Anthony Bice (CBS) from Jackson Tait
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH COACH ED BRNARDIC: “It was an ominous start to the morning with us having bus issues getting to the game. We pulled into the parking lot 10 minutes before kickoff, and we could have
easily been forced to start on time, but CB East Coach Josh Isaacsohn asked the referees to delay the start so we could have our proper warm up. Such a classy move by the CB East coach and staff.
“The game was evenly played, and both teams had chances to score in regulation. I’m proud of the way our defense battled, our midfield connected, and our strikers fought to the end. We had some great chances – Andrew Sherstynov hit a beautiful ball from 30 yards out that smashed off the crossbar, Tyler Jaskelewicz had several near misses, Rowan MacDonald had a couple chances himself. It could have easily ended in a scoreless draw, but in overtime, it was Anthony Bice, making a run on a Jackson Tait pass, who beat the keeper 1v1 to end the game.
“I heard about rivalry games between the CB schools, and if this is what they are like, I’m looking forward to many more. For the most part, it was a very well-played game both tactically and technically, an excellent display of sportsmanship between both teams, and a very well officiated game.”
PROPS:
–FOR COACH ISAACSOHN: Tons of respect for CB East Coach Isaacsohn and his staff. To proactively ensure that we had a full warmup demonstrates his character. And on the field, it is so hard to coach against him because he is fantastic at drawing up set plays. They are so dangerous on every one of them.
—FOR GOALKEEPER RYAN WEINER: “Our goalie Ryan kept a clean sheet today when we needed him to. He made a few saves, the best of them coming early in the second half when he came off his line and slid-in,
hands first, to push the ball away from the foot of a CB East attacking player.”
—FOR JACKSON TAIT: “Jackson had his best game of the season, sending several quality balls into the box. I had a few players that I wanted to get into the game, but he was hot, and I just couldn’t sub him out of the game. He came off at the end of regulation and promised our assistant coach Anthony Ditri that he would either score or assist on the winner. Sure enough, he tracked down a CB East player, won the tackle at midfield, turned, and played a left footed through ball to Anthony Bice who went on to score the winner.”
—FOR ROWAN MACDONALD AND THE ENTIRE CB SOUTH DEFENSE: “Rowan and crew played the full 89 minutes today and were solid in the back, but they also knew when to get forward, and many of them added quality attempts at goal. Rowan hit a cross-the-body volley with 11 minutes to go that swerved just wide, and then with two seconds left in regulation, his head ball was down into the bottom corner, but he was denied by a great diving save by the CB East goalkeeper.
NEXT UP: CB South (12-1, 6-0 SOL) has a 10 day break before traveling to North Penn on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
CB East (5-5-2, 3-3-0) will host Cheltenham Tuesday (7 pm) for Senior Recognition Night.

SPRINGFIELD TWP 1, GREAT VALLEY 1 (2 OT)
To say the Spartans had a long week of soccer would be an understatement.
Thirteen-and-a-half hours after arriving home from their third game in five days at New Hope, the Spartans boarded a bus Saturday morning for a road trip to Great Valley for a non-league game.
Eighty minutes could not determine a winner, so the two teams – both in the top 10 in the District 1 4A power rankings – battled through two 10-minute overtimes and, in the end, were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie.
Saturday’s game brought to an end a gauntlet that included two crossover games against last year’s SOL division champions and another in a battle for the top spot in the division and came out of it with a 2-0-2 record.
“Going into yesterday, New Hope was first in our division,” said Springfield coach Dan Meder, whose team played CB East and CR North earlier in the week. “It was brutal.
“Football is played once a week for a reason – because it beats up your body. Soccer is not the same level, but professionally, what do they play? Once or maybe twice a week. You don’t play it four times a week. It’s too much.
“Looking at this week going into the season, I thought this is going to be bad, and we’re going to come out with injuries. We are a little nicked up, but I think we’re going to be okay. I’m just really proud of the way the guys worked through this week. This was a really difficult week.”
Great Valley scored 10 minutes into the game, and that 1-0 lead until just 15 minutes remained in regulation when Harry Bates turned a pass from Henry Drapkin into the equalizer.
“It was a long time between goals,” Meder said. “It was a good soccer game. Both teams played well.”
Scoring Summary
First half
Jack Weikert (GV)
Second half
Harry Bates (S) from Henry Drapkin
Springfield Twp coach Dan Meder on the game: “Early in the first half, we had a couple good chances, near misses. Then we had a bit of a turnover, and they capitalized on it, and that was only nine or 10 minutes into the game. They were very energetic in the first half and generated a number of scoring chances. We generated a few, but we looked tired. We looked a little tired understandably.
“We reorganized a little bit at halftime, and we looked a little better in the second half and generated more chances and luckily put one away on a great goal from those two guys. Henry made a great run and put the ball in for Harry, and he finished it. Overtime was back and forth. They came out strong and had some chances, and then we generated a few chances.”
–Getting defensive: “Chase Rubincam heads up our defense. He’s been outstanding, and through four games, he’s playing nicked up at this point and had to battle through. When I ask him how he’s doing, he always says, ‘I’m fine’ even if he’s not fine. The group of them back there – Brendan Noonan, Igor Hyvel, who was back there for the first half until he got injured, Will McLaughlin, who went in and played for Igor and played great for us. Owen (Hastings) had to make some saves – he had eight saves, so he played great. I thought their goalie played great too and made some really good saves. Kayden Sowell, one of our captains, played great and really did well for us defensively. I’m really proud of the work and effort they put in in four games.”
Up next: Springfield (9-1-3, 4-1-1 SOL) will host Upper Dublin in a non-league game Tuesday.

SOL Freedom Division
Springfield Twp 3, New Hope-Solebury 1
Harry Bates scored three goals as Springfield broke open a close game and picked up a big win over New Hope-Solebury in a first place versus second place Freedom Division game on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Spartans own a one-point lead over the Lions in the division standings.
“The team played great, and Harry’s on the end of it and finishes for us,” Spartans’ coach Dan Meder said.
New Hope-winners of just one of 16 league games last year – is a vastly improved team from past years.
“They have some really solid players, and they have a new coach (Chris Van Pelt) – he’s got them organized, and they’re playing really good soccer,” Meder said. “They’re Class A, and I told him – ‘Just win enough games to get to the postseason. You guys are going to do well.’
“It was a good game with them. It’s always a good game. Even when they were near the bottom, they always gave us a hard time. It was a really difficult game for us. They played well, and so did our guys. Our guys played well.”
Ed Ha and Shaun Bleeker added assists for the Spartans.
Brody Curran scored for New Hope
–Props: “The (goals) were great team efforts, but Harry’s done that a few times where he’s had multiple goals. He’s a terrific finisher. He’s a passionate soccer player. He knows the game, he studies the game, he’s a real student of the game, and he works hard for his goals.”
Next up: Springfield (9-1-2, 4-1-1 SOL) takes on Great Valley on Saturday morning.
New Hope (9-4, 4-2 SOL) next plays Oct. 8 against Upper Moreland.

North Penn 2, Central Bucks West 1
Scoring Summary
Cole Barrett scored for CB West.
For the Knights, Ryan Miller scored on a shot from the top of the box, and Adam MacNair scored on a side volley.
North Penn coach Christ DePeppe on the game: “We started well and peppered their goal, but their keeper blocked a few early. It was a tough day to be a keeper – wet ball, slick surface and a lot of dicey moments and difficult decisions. We’re very fortunate to have a junior keeper who is very smart and knows how to organize his defense, AND most importantly, he is a vocal leader. Today’s players are so athletic and they’re much better technically then the average than players were 20-30 years ago, but they sure don’t communicate well on the field. I don’t mean giving teammates direction or calling out the marking on corners. I’m talking about two teammates running right at each on an obvious collision course to a loose ball and neither one says ‘Mine!’ or ‘My ball’ and one of them suffers a concussion. (I’ve seen that happen.)
–Stopper in goal: “Brady Schwengels has a ton of experience, and he is a very good shot stopper, his distribution has been great, and he’s posted 5-6 shutouts. But I am most impressed by his demeanor and that good loud voice that keeps everyone’s head in the game. He had to deal with some very tough free kicks and crosses, and unfortunately, one of their set pieces was a curling delivery that our defenders didn’t deal with, and a nice header caught him just a step off his line.
“I looked at this game as a potential trap for us because of the conditions and CB West’s resurgence and obvious motivation, so for the last 12 minutes or so we were locking it down and Brady had us well organized down the stretch.
–Props: I thought Cole Barrett was outstanding. I only know him as an attacking midfielder, but he made a big difference as a striker playing with his back to the goal. He’s strong on the ball, and I enjoyed watching him battle with Ian Balisalisa. Ian has made all the difference for us as a center back and that move was also necessitated by our poor communication in the back.”
Next up: North Penn (8-5, 2-4 SOL) is off until Tuesday, Oct. 8, when the Knights will host Central Bucks South.
CB West (3-6-2, 0-5-1 SOL) hosts Wissahickon on Monday night.
