ABINGTON 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-13)
An inexperienced Golden Hawk squad battled but fell in three sets in Tuesday’s season opener.
“We lost two tight matches,” Rock South coach Jacquelyn Curci said. “This is a team with only one returning varsity player, and this young team is starting to get its bearings.”
Senior outside hitter Andrew Richards led the Hawks with 15 kills (.308 hitting average), two aces and 11 digs. He had a 2.1 receive rating. Sophomore setter Mitchell Gribman had 18 assists, nine digs and one ace. Junior setter/right side hitter Jatin Singh contributed three blocks, one kill and nine assists while junior outside Alec Rovner had seven digs and three kills.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, PENNRIDGE 1 (25-18, 25-14, 26-28, 28-26)
The Patriots won a hard-fought match over the Rams.
Patriot leaders included setter Steve Storm, who dished out 31 assists and also had 17 digs, two aces, three kills and a block. Ryan Rigus, according to coach Rob Minschwiner, was tough defensively, finishing with 13 digs. Dylan Colbert came up huge at the net, contributing 19 kills and two blocks. He also was a force defensively with 15 digs. Patriot middle hitters Thomas Gallagher-Teske and Christian Wolf added eight kills apiece while delivering nine and five blocks respectively. Also making important contributions were Jacob LaBouliere (six kills, two aces), Jack Miller (nine digs, three blocks, two aces) and CJ Dalby (six blocks).
For the Rams, Ryan Benscoter led the way with 16 kills. Chris McKinney had nine kills, 11 digs and five aces, and Evan Lionetti added seven kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Danny Rutter contributed six kills and 14 digs while Matt McCreary had six kills and three blocks. Austin Jalosinski had 38 assists and three blocks, and Tommy Cassel added nine digs and three aces.
Pennridge will be on the road at North Penn on Thursday.
NESHAMINY 3, BENSALEM 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20)
The Redskins dropped the first set but rallied to win the next three.
Tony Camillo led the Redskins at the net with 15 kills to go along with one ace and six digs. Matt Schwab had five aces, seven kills and six digs, and Jesse Marshall contributed one ace, five kills and three blocks. Ben Clendening had two kills and three blocks, and Paul Allen added one ace, four kills and three digs. Setter Nick Storz had 34 assists, two aces, one kill, six digs and one block. Jesse Kovaschetz had five digs.
For the Owls, Basheer Ghafary led the way with 32 assists, two kills and two aces. Ethan Fan, according to coach Tim Linehan, had a strong match with 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces. Paul Leible added 10 kills and one block for the Owls.
SOUDERTON 3, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1 (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15)
The Indians opened their season with a four-set win over the Titans.
Setter Luke Pagan had 35 assists and four aces. Jimmy Wert led the attack with 14 kills, two blocks and one ace, and Aidan Wunderly had 11 kills.
For the Titans, Ricky Cho had seven kills on 15 attempts and also recorded two digs. Aidan O’Brien led the offense with 15 kills. Jon Zonshein led the defense with 10 digs. Setter Andrew Rubas spread the ball around, recording 25 assists.
“We made a lot of errors against a good team, and Souderton took advantage of those mistakes, keeping us playing from behind on the scoreboard,” South coach Matt Ehlers said.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, QUAKERTOWN 0 (25-19, 26-24, 26-20)
The Bucks opened their season with a sweep of the Panthers.
Quakertown received contributions from Cameron Cronk (three kills, five digs), Justin Flor (four kills, four digs, five aces, one block), Zach Frei (four kills, three digs), Nathan Barkholz (four kills, one dig) and Ryan DiCandilo (two kills, one block). Setter Ty Fosbenner had 12 assists and one kill.
WILLIAM TENNENT 3, CHELTENHAM 0 (25-14, 25-5, 25-13)
In a battle of the Panthers, it was Tennent rolling to a sweep.
Setter Ben Weir had 21 assists. Bohdan Tkachov led a balanced attack with nine kills while Tyler Yannuzzi had seven kills. Connor Berndlmaier led a strong Tennent service game with four aces. Caleb McClaren had three aces, and Charlie Green chipped in three kills.
PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-20)
In a battle of neighboring rivals, it was the Falcons upending the Indians in straight sets.
Luke Bucksar had 10 kills and a .292 hitting percentage to lead the Falcons. He also had two assists, three aces and five digs. Setter Andy Delworth had 27 assists, two kills, six digs and one block. Matt Sweeney had seven digs and one ace. Justin Sadley contributed seven kills, three aces and four digs while Jake Loerch had six kills, one assist, one ace, five digs and one block. Sebastian Kloda had four kills and an .800 hitting percentage. He also had one block. Nathan Sadley (.600) had three kills and two blocks. Joe Martell, according to coach Justin Fee, served strong all match.
Sean D’Arcy led the Indians with seven kills while Abe Eldo led the defense with 13 digs. Justin Burns contributed two kills, and setter Vytis Duncia led the team with six assists.
Council Rock North will travel to Abington on Thursday.
UPPER DUBLIN 3, NORTH PENN 1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-19, 28-26)
The Flying Cardinals earned a hard-fought win over the Knights.
Matt Ross led the Cardinals with 19 kills to go along with two aces, three blocks and six digs while Mario Petushi had 14 kills, one ace, one block, three assists and nine digs. Devin O’Brien (25 assists, one dig) and David Levin (11 assists, two digs) split setting duties. Mike Ryan had four kills and three blocks while Taco Thompson had one ace and six digs. Ciaran Sutherland had five kills.
For the Knights, setter Drew Coles had 19 assists, one block, three kills and 11 digs. Michael Wang led the way at the net with 13 kills and three blocks. He also had three assists and 11 digs. Evan Rothmann had 12 kills, one block, one ace and 10 digs, and Zach Jayes added seven kills, four blocks and three digs. Jamie Stewart had 11 digs, and Ryan Stewart added 10 assists, one ace and two digs. Kevin Abraham (five kills, three digs) and Manav Patel (one block, five digs) also contributed.
