AVON GROVE 19, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 4
The Titans came up short against a powerful Avon Grove squad in a non-league game Saturday, but they had reason to celebrate as goalie Gabby Mayo reached the 300-save milestone. This despite missing her freshman season due to the COVID shutdown.
“I had no idea,” Mayo said of attaining the milestone. “Apparently, coach (Janique) Craig called my parents yesterday, and she said to keep it a secret so they could surprise me today with the celebration.”
Mayo needed just two saves to reach the milestone, and the historic save came early.
“Coach Craig called a timeout – I had the ball in my stick, and I had just thrown it,” she said. “I had no idea until we were on the sidelines.
“It was so exciting. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Mayo knew the 300 saves was a possibility after she surpassed the 200-save mark last year.
“I was setting my sights on 300,” she said. “I had no idea when I was going to get there, but I was hoping to get there at some point this year.”
Mayo had no experience in goal until she reached high school,
“I started playing lacrosse in fourth grade, and I was a defender,” she said. “In my freshman year coach Craig asked me to be a goalie.
“It was intimidating because it’s a lot of balls being thrown at you, but it’s exciting because it’s such a cool position, and you have a lot of control with it. I can make or
break a game, and I like being under that pressure. I love it.”
Mayo attended offseason practices and joined a club team her sophomore year. Her hard work paid dividends as her name will go in the program record books.
“We could not be more proud of Gabby, our senior captain and goalkeeper,” Craig said. “She is the backbone of our team and has kept us in so many games. Three hundred saves is an exceptional milestone and she is the first goalkeeper in the history of CB South to accomplish this.”
Mayo is hoping to continue her lacrosse career at the club level next year.
“I’m keeping my options open,” the Titans’ senior goalie said.
