CHELTENHAM 12, CONWELL EGAN 11
The Panthers displayed remarkable resiliency, scoring a pair of goals in a span of 1:35 after the Eagles rallied from a once six-goal deficit to knot the score late in Monday’s non-league game.
“I told the guys in the locker room after the game – in the past couple of years, if we would have a lead and the other team fought back, we never really would get over that hump,” coach Michael DiPuppo said. “The way the momentum had shifted in the second half tonight – you could kind of feel Conwell Egan coming back.
“We weren’t making the plays, and Conwell Egan stepped up and made some nice plays and nice adjustments. You knew we had a chance, but to see the kids step up the way they did – within a minute and 35, you put two goals in the back of the net to say ‘You guys tied us. Now we’re going to take over this game.’ Our offense worked. We scored the goals we needed to and held on.”
The Panthers, who led 3-1 after one quarter, took a 7-4 lead into halftime and led by just a 10-8 score heading into the final quarter when the Eagles rallied to knot the score with four minutes remaining.
“We were up 6-1 and 7-2, we got a little sloppy, we kind of rushed some things, and we kind of ran away from the game plan a little bit, and they tied the ball game,” DiPuppo said. “They really outhustled us the second half.”
Less than a minute after the Eagles knotted the score, Alex Townshend scored the go-ahead goal with 3:34 remaining, using a Harry Stackhouse assist.
“This play – I hadn’t seen passing like that from this group ever,” DiPuppo said. “We were working the ball around, looking for a good shot.
“We passed it down to Harry Stackhouse, and he rifled a pass over the middle to Alex, who just put it in the net. That was an incredible play.”
Senior captain Colin Boyle – back in action for the first time this season after being sidelined with an injury – tacked on an insurance goal with 2:25 remaining.
“They were trying to get the ball back, so we spread out the field,” DiPuppo said. “Colin found a spot, beat his man and put the ball in the goal.”
The Eagles scored to make it a 12-11 game with 2:09 remaining in regulation.
“We hung on for dear life,” DiPuppo said. “The defense stood tall, and our goalie made a couple of nice saves at the end, and we were able to escape.”
Tim McHugh led the Panthers with five goals, and Boyle added four. Townshend finished with two goals while Stackhouse had one goal and two assists. Jacque Fisher had a pair of assists.
Daniel Lee won 12-of-18 face-offs, and Panther goalie Harvey Miller recorded eight saves in the win.
