SOL American Conference
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 8, SOUDERTON 7
Zach Coppol faked right, cut left into open space and buried his shot to give the Spartans a two-goal lead on the road with three minutes left.
Of course, that would have been too easy a finish for the Spartans. For the second straight day, the Spartans found themselves in a one-goal game only this one ended better than Monday's.
"In the fourth quarter, we played well as a team and just stuck together,” attackman Paul Richardson said. “They were mounting a nice comeback but our defense and Paul (Asman) made a couple nice saves, we were able to bring the ball down, hold the ball and that was it.”
Coppol had the eventual game-winner, but Richardson was the Spartans' catalyst. The junior midfielder, who also had a massive presence defensively, scored five goals and assisted on another including the final go-ahead goal with five minutes to play.
Senior goalie Paul Asman came up with a huge save with about 1:10 left on the clock and a final Souderton turnover with about 30 seconds left allowed Springfield to close out the win. The victory not only pushed the Spartans to 3-1 in one-goal games this spring, it kept them tied atop the SOL American while knocking Souderton out of that logjam.
"We’ve been through too much to let shots like that bring us down,” Asman said. “We weren’t going to let that faze us. We know we have a great offense, they kept us in the game and it was just an all-around team win.”
Richardson scored the game's opening goal, but Souderton got the next two. Asman made a save, then found Richardson on an outlet with the midfielder carrying the ball the rest of the way for the tying goal.
That scored kicked off a 3-0 Springfield Township spurt that put the Spartans up for most of the game.
"Playing against all these good teams, we look at it as practice for if we make the playoffs," Richardson said. "We've been in all these close games and we know how to excel in these close games so if we get into these situations in the playoffs, we can pull it out like we did tonight."
Cole Witoslawski led Souderton with a hat trick and got the Indians within 6-5 at the end of the third quarter. Luke Halteman scored on a long-range shot to tie the game in the fourth with 5:33 to play.
Richardson only needed 23 seconds to restore the lead before Coppol added the insurance goal that ended up the game-winner.
"I think we've grown all-around," Richardson said. "We've gotten a lot better, on defense our slides and our talking is much better and on offense, we're getting quality shots and we're able to move the ball around the horn and do whatever we want."
Also for the Indians, Matt Rauch had two goals and one assist, and Brock Azell had one goal. Goalie Axell Beskar recorded 13 saves, and Luke Atiyeh scooped up four ground balls.
Springfield Township (7-5, 4-1 SOL) will travel to Council Rock North Wednesday, and Souderton (9-4, 3-2) will be on the road at Plymouth Whitemarsh Wednesday.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 10, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 9
The Hatters raced out of the gate to an 8-3 halftime lead and then had to hold off a hard-charging Indian squad to eke out the win. The Hatters – who scored just two goals after the intermission – were down a player for the final 10 minutes of the game.
Goalie Arielle Hammer was able to scoop up a ground ball late in the game and pass it down the field to seal the victory. Junior Gabrielle Liott scored her 100th career goal. She came into the game needing only one goal and was able to score early in the first half to reach the milestone.
