Boys
American Conference
Wissahickon 4, Plymouth Whitemarsh 1
Last Friday, Wissahickon put up 16 goals and allowed just one in a dominating victory over Upper Moreland. On Tuesday, the Trojans didn’t put up nearly as much offense, but the defense again had a stellar game, allowing Wissahickon to remain undefeated in conference play.
The Trojans improved to 3-0 in the conference thanks to its win over host Plymouth Whitemarsh in a morning game between the two teams.
“The timing was a little off for us,” Wissahickon coach Dan Layfield said of the morning game. “It’s spring break and we’re trying to get the kids going early in the morning to get on the bus, and it kind of changes the whole pre-game schedule for us. But we executed our game plan and we controlled the pace of the game throughout.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Wissahickon’s Nate DeGroat took a pass from John Carrozza and found the back of the cage, putting the Trojans up 1-0 just over 15 ½ minutes into the contest. Carrozza scored later in the half to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead, but a goal by PW’s Alex Saverese in the final minute of the second quarter cut the Colonials’ deficit in half.
Goals by Eric Kaufman and Jack Shea in the second half capped the scoring and helped the Trojans (3-1, 3-0) to escape with the road victory. Carrozza added another two assists in the second half to finish with four points on the day.
The Trojans held a 24-11 advantage in shots, and the Colonials (2-2, 2-1 SOL) saw goalie Riley White make nine saves. Wissahickon goalkeeper Jack Meyers stopped five shots to earn the win.
“Jack Meyers had a great game, and he kind of led the defense for us,” Layfield said.
Kyle Wolf led the Wissahickon defense with six groundballs.
Despite the win, Layfield said he believes his team could have come out with a much better game.
“I think we didn’t capitalize on all the opportunities we had,” he said. “I told the team that today, if we capitalized on everything we were given, we would’ve scored twice as many goals. We took advantage of the things we needed to do to win, but we didn’t play a complete game.”
