Check out the results for SOL boys/girls soccer teams in action Saturday.
Boys
HATBORO-HORSHAM 1, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 0
Colin Bateman found the cage in the 75th minute – benefitting from a Josh Haggerty assist. That goal turned out to be the game winner in a battle of former Continental Conference foes.
“It was a great strike from 22 yards out into the upper 90,” coach Kyle McGrath said. “It was a good game with not many dangerous scoring opportunities for either team.”
The Hatters’ coach lauded the strong performances of Will Kemp and JD Mallinder in the back.
West goalie Dylan Smith recorded two saves.
Hatboro-Horsham (7-1-2, 4-0-2 SOL) will host Cheltenham on Tuesday, and Central Bucks West (4-3-1, 3-2-1) will host George Washington in a non-league game on Tuesday.
Central Bucks West 0-0 0
Hatboro-Horsham 0-1 1
HARRY S TRUMAN 3, CONWELL EGAN 1
Truman and Conwell Egan played to an enthusiastic crowd in Saturday’s non-league battle between the neighboring rivals, and it was the Tigers coming away with the win.
“We kind of caught the breaks today,” coach Jack Kinloch said. “It was a very even match. We caught the breaks and Egan didn’t. We were fortunate to be up 3-0 before they got their goal late.
“Egan talked the game up – there was a really nice crowd for both sides. We really hope this is the start of something we can do every year. It can only help both teams. Hopefully, over the next couple of years, the more we do this, the more people come out, and young kids come out and say – these are two teams that work hard.”
CJ Weed put the Tigers on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, and the Tigers took that 1-0 lead into halftime. Ilyas Nashid’s goal in the 55th minute gave the Tigers a two-goal advantage, and they led 3-0 after a goal by RJ Bost in the 68th minute.
Egan avoided the shutout with a goal in the 80th minute from Matt Costanzo.
Kinloch lauded the play of his two center backs – Ilhan Zivali and Kevin Buckland.
“They played really well in the back, and they allowed us to get a couple of extra guys in the midfield and further up the field so that we could attack a bit more than we have in the league,” the Tigers’ coach said. “Our league is so strong, and we have to defend so much”
For the Tigers, Saturday’s contest against the Eagles was a welcome break from league play.
“Last year, 11 of our 17 games were against teams that were in the District One playoffs,” Kinloch said. “We get better playing those teams, but you don’t see it when you’re playing those same teams.”
Prior to taking over the helm at Truman, Kinloch coached at North Catholic for 13 years before it closed.
“I never really understood how hard it was in the Suburban One League until I started coaching in it,” Kinloch said. “It’s crazy because the Suburban One National and the Suburban One Continental are the only two conferences where you’re probably playing two thirds of your games against teams that are making districts. It’s just not that easy.”
Kinloch pointed to the Tigers’ 1-0 loss to Coatesville last week as a game his team should have won.
“We can’t lose games like that because we have to come back and play Council Rock North on Tuesday and we have to play Pennsbury on Thursday – there’s no forgiveness in the schedule,” he said. “This week we played Abington and Neshaminy. It’s a very difficult road to run, and it’s hard for the boys to see that we are getting better.”
Harry S Truman (2-6, 0-5 SOL) will travel to Pennsbury on Tuesday.
Conwell Egan 0-1 1
Harry S Truman 1-2 3
PENNSBURY 2, DOWNINGTOWN WEST 1
The Falcons are making a habit of knocking teams from the ranks of the undefeated. Two days after handing Council Rock North its first loss of the season, the Falcons handed the Whippets their first loss of the season, once again rallying from an early 1-0 deficit to earn the win.
“I think it’s five occasions that we’ve had to come back from one down,” said coach Tom Stoddart, whose team has not given up more than one goal in any game this season.
The host Whippets got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute, but the Falcons battled back to knot the score when Arlyn Buondonno turned an Obbi Onuoho pass into a goal.
Zach LoBasso scored on the game winner on a rebound of a shot by Andrew Roccograndi.
“We’ve been battling some injuries and some illness, but we’re pretty well balanced, and we stay pretty composed even when we’re trailing,” Stoddart said “We got a lot of people that can put the ball in the back of the net when we need to. We’re just going to stay together and just roll with the good times here.”
Nate Slotnick earned his ninth straight win in goal. Stoddart also lauded the performance of his back line.
“My entire back line has been sharp,” the Falcons’ coach said. “We were down one guy today due to illness, but our two center backs, Dan Rottenborn and, a freshman, Josh Panaro – for a freshman to step in and pretty much play every minute at center back is great to have, and my right back, Matiss Mendis, is a top level player.”
Pennsbury, who will host Harry S Truman on Tuesday, improved to 9-0 on the season (4-0 SOL).
“We lost a few players (to graduation), so we were coming in with a lot of question marks,” Stoddart said. “We had a lot of things we had to figure out, but we had a huge influx of talent.
“We have fortunately been able to get into a little bit of rhythm and figure some things out. When you’re winning when you do it, it definitely makes it easier.”
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7, COATESVILLE 0
The Titans scored early and often in Saturday’s non-league win over the visiting Raiders. Jason Reimert scored in the first minute and the Titans were off and running. Chris Griffin (Reimert assist) scored in the 46th minute, and eight minutes later, Giacomo Spatola found the net with an assist from Jake Heilig to put the Titans on top 5-0. Spatola turned a Colin Fagan pass into a goal in the 67th minute, and Laurenaitis closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 74th minute.
