QUAKERTOWN 2, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1
The visiting Panthers broke a 1-1 tie when Cassidy Landis turned a cross from Sunday Draper into a goal late in the third quarter. Draper dribbled down the right side of the field, sent a pass across goal. Landis met the ball and put it in the back of the cage, propelling the defending SOL Liberty Division co-champs to the exciting win.
Earlier, the two teams exchanged first-quarter goals with Paige Longacre scoring to give the Panthers the lead only to see East’s Anna Daly even the score during corner play with an assist from Avery McCann.
By the numbers:
1st quarter: Paige Longacre (Q) 9:22 1-0
1st quarter: Anna Daly (CBE) from Avery McCann 1:33 1-1
3rd quarter: Cassidy Landis (Q) from Sunday Draper 3:41 2-1
Quakertown coach MacKenzie Moser:
“CB East came with intensity, they were a skilled team, and therefore, we knew we needed to step to every ball and make solid passes to our teammates. The key for us to today was having solid communication and connection so that each pass was intentional and purposeful.
“As a season starter, this game was a solid one, with both teams playing exceptionally well. We needed to see a win as we are still meshing and moving positions. This helped us as a team to understand why holding our positions and working together is so important.”
–Props: “This was really a team effort. We have been molding a different group of players as we lost some valuable seniors, so to see every one of them working together to support each other was huge.”
East coach Emma Rosenthal: “It was a pretty evenly matched game all around which is a great way to open up a competitive season. Our defense had a stellar day with Cam Puhalla earning 10 saves and Morgan Harrington, Maddie Mandia, and Katie Szczypiorski making some big plays in front of her. Ultimately, we just need to get the ball in the back of the net. And that’s what we’re looking to do going forward.”

PLYMOUTH WHITMARSH 4, NESHAMINY 3 (OT)
The Colonials rallied from a 3-1 deficit to send the game to overtime where they won it in dramatic fashion when Emily Dobrowolski scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Gracie Kerns.
Kasey Rieger was all but unstoppable for the Redskins, scoring all three of her team’s goals. Two of them came in the second quarter, propelling Neshaminy to a 2-1 halftime lead. Her third
goal early in the third quarter extended the lead to 3-1 before the Colonials rallied.
Dobrowolski scored off a broken corner play to make it a 3-2 game, and the Colonials’ Ava Mathias scored on a strong shot during corner play to even the score, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Neshaminy suffered a major setback when Rieger left the game with an injury early in OT.
By the numbers:
2nd quarter: Kasey Rieger (N) from Ava Arbakov 11:11 1-0
2nd quarter: Gracie Kerns (PW) from Emily Dobrowolski 1-1
2nd quarter: Kasey Rieger (N) 1:38 2-1
3rd quarter: Kasey Rieger (N) from Mia Brooks 13:43 3-1
3rd quarter: Emily Dobrowolski (PW) 8:03 3-2
4th quarter: Ava Matthias (PW) 3:15 3-3
OT: Emily Dobrowolski (PW) from Gracie Kerns 4-3
Coach Charise Halteman says:
“We’re really proud of the team. Last year we had a rough start to the season, and I remember saying many times that
this team was really committed to growth, and they really did the work. It feels good that we’re starting at a better place than last season and we really have learned and grown a lot over the last season and a half. We’re playing at a higher level and able to make adjustments in the very first game of the season, so that’s exciting. There’s still a lot we need to work on and things we need to tighten up, but it was good to see the team respond even after being down, and they were able to use a halftime talk and implement what we were talking about, so it bodes well, and it’s just a confidence booster. We had some good leadership and a lot of strengths that we can really lean into. I think the mistakes are all things we can work on, fix and improve, so that’s exciting. It’s just a confidence booster.”
Saving the day: “Neshaminy made one last final push at the end of the fourth quarter, earning a corner with no time left on the clock. Our defensive corner unit, of Hadley Blake, Ava Matthias, Emily Dobrowolski, Kate Dobrowolski, and goalkeeper Carly Spinner, stayed composed and played through five Neshaminy corners with the time expired to send the game into overtime. They did a really nice job of hanging in there and not giving up.
How they won it: “Kerns and Emily. Dobrowolski took advantage of a numbers up opportunity to create a 2v1 with the Neshaminy goalkeeper and secure the win with a finish in the back of the net by Dobrowolski.”
Props: “Ava Matthias, our center back, had a really solid game start to finish. She did a really good of marking #1 (Rieger). Our second half highlighted the solid play of defenders Ava Matthias and Hadley Blake and the creative and speedy attacking plays of Emily Dobrowolski, Gracie Kerns, Ella Catania, and Bridget Fullerton. The second half also saw us earn more shots on cage and attacking corners with 17 shots and 8 attacking corners in total. Today’s win was truly a team effort and an exciting win to kick off the 2024 season.

NORTH PENN 4, OWEN J ROBERTS 3 (OT)
The Knights won an overtime thriller when – with 4:35 remaining – Paige Shearer turned a pass from Cara Albano into the game-winner. Making the win especially sweet was the fact that the Knights – who rallied from a 2-0 lead to take a 3-2 lead – rebounded after allowing the Wildcats to knot the score with 71 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Wildcats scored a pair of first-quarter goals, but Laura Albert answered with a pair of goals in the second quarter – both on corner play – to send the Knights into halftime deadlocked 2-2. Shearer (Kylie Barwis assist) scored 45 seconds into the third quarter, and it looked like the Knights were on their way to the 3-2 win, but the Wildcats had other ideas, scoring the late goal to force overtime. The Knights, however, would not be denied.
By the numbers:
1st quarter: Evie Walters (OJR) from Sarah Englehardt 10:26 1-0
1st quarter: Sarah Englehardt (OJR) from Kiera Clemson 7:03 2-0
2nd quarter: Laura Albert (NP) from Kylie Barwis 13:48 2-1
2nd quarter: Laura Albert (NP) 7:49 2-2
3rd quarter: Paige Shearer (NP) from Kylie Barwis 14:11, 3-2
4th quarter: Mira Smolij (OJR) Sarah Englehardt 1:11 3-3
OT: Paige Shearer (NP rom Cara Albano 4:35 4-3
Penalty corners: NP 6, OJR 9; Shots: NP 20, OJR 17
Goalkeeper saves: Kiley Moister (NP) 13, Jazz Campbell (OJF) 16.
Defensive saves: Kirstyn Schoppe (NP)
Coach Shannon McCracken says:
“I told the kids in postgame – what a valuable first game because a little bit of everything happened. We fell behind, and you don’t know your identity as a team, so when you fall behind, you don’t have anything to fall back to and say, ‘Remember the game we came back…’ For them to settle in and come back and then for them to tie it and go to overtime – it was such a momentum shift because the second quarter we tied it up and deflated them. Then we scored in the third quarter and held that lead until 1:11 left to send it to overtime. It was kind of wild. We can’t let up a goal like that – that was a learning experience as well. Then we won the game in overtime. It was a game of many lessons to hopefully set us up for some success later this season. I’m really proud of the kids.”
–How they won it: “We scored the game winner on a transition up the right side of the field and then a beautiful cross from Cara Albano to Paige Shearer.”
–Props: “(Goalie) Kiley Moister had some huge saves during OT to hold off the Wildcats. Senior Ashleigh Barwis and Laura Albert had great games at midfield while junior Tallie Smink headed up the defense. Laura Albert had two really nice goals on penalty corners.”

“It was nice to get a win against a team that always finishes in the top 10 of the district power rankings. The game was really back and forth until the last five minutes, The girls are very aware that we need to be more efficient in our offensive circle going forward. “Obviously, a lot of things are still a ‘work-in-progress’ but we’ve definitely made strides in the right direction in the last two weeks. Our seniors have done a great job setting expectations and stressing accountability. We face another very tough opponent on Monday (Methacton), so hopefully we will rise to the occasion.”

The Pennsbury Falcons kicked off their 2024 game schedule with a strong win over Archbishop Wood (7-0).
“Holding them scoreless and notching seven goals was a great way to add some fuel to the fire that has already been burning during preseason,” Pennsbury coach Traci Curtis said. “This was a new opponent for us, so game prep was hyper focused on just playing ‘our’ game and taking control early. Today allowed us to continue to look at our roster and evaluate our lineup while also checking our depth as we look ahead at our schedule and know what is to come.”
Curtis continued, “This time of year we are like scientists working in a lab trying to mix the best concoction. It seems as though the experimentation worked well today with five different scorers on attack and the defense holding Wood to zero shots or goals.”
Senior Alaina Bird started off the scoring with a rebound shot early in the first quarter. Sophomore Regan Rodriguez tallied her first of the season on an assist from sophomore Ryan Burdette. Senior captain Ava Jordan added another late in the second quarter with an assist from fellow senior Sam Nesteruk. The Falcons entered halftime up 3-0 and were hungry for more.
Wood held the Falcons in the third quarter and the score remained 3-0 until Rodriguez struck again halfway through the fourth assisted by junior Abby Anderer. In the final 15 minutes, the Falcons were full steam ahead. A spark ignited, and the Falcons went on to score three more goals in the quarter to finish out the game with a 7-0 victory. Ava Jordan added her second, an unassisted goal, and sophomore Ava Pinto scored on an assist from sophomore, Abby Iacona. Burdette, snuck one more in with under 30 seconds left in the game to put an exclamation point on the day.
Curtis and assistant Coach, Lori Riley, were very pleased with the overall performance of the group.
“It was a full team win with every player contributing and a nice reflection of the hard work leading up to the game,” Curtis said. “We loved how they came together and set the tone for the season. We are taking one step at a time so we will take this win and now begin to prepare for what is next.”
