Non-league crossover
NORTH PENN 2, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 1
On a night where the cause was bigger than the outcome, PW and North Penn joined forces for a childhood cancer benefit game, raising money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in honor of PW’s Maddie Carr, who lost her courageous battle with cancer.
The teams put on quite a display of field hockey, exchanging goals with Kylie Barwis scoring a goal four-and-a-half minutes
into the final quarter that turned out to be the game-winner.
“It was a really good game,” North Penn coach Shannon McCracken said. “As a coach, you look at their scores and our scores and you compare. I knew going into this game it was going to be evenly matched because we had similar scores, similar scenarios and things like that.
“It was a really great game. It had a playoff feel. It was a lot of back-and-forth action, and it was a really fast game. The transition was quick from one end to the other. We hit the post at least once, they hit the post at least once. There was a lot of action. It was really exciting.”
Early on, a goal by Brooke Goewey late in the second quarter sent the Knights into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Julz Scherzer connected on the equalizer early in the third quarter. That 1-1 tie stood until Barwis scored the game-winner.
In the evenly played game, both goalkeepers turned in strong showings with North Penn’s Kiley Moister turning away 13 shots in the win and PW’s Carly Spinner recording 11 saves.

North Penn coach Shannon McCracken:
–On the game: “In these crossover games, you play some great teams, and PW is a great team. They were above us in
the (district power) rankings. We have had some up and down games, a bit of a roller coaster. We play in such a strong division. We graduated some kids, and we were moving kids around trying to find our identity.
“Tonight, for us, we played a complete 60-minute game team hockey and did the things that we do well. Every year, you have to figure out your team’s strengths. I think tonight we did a good job of playing to our strengths and not allowing the other team to dictate our play and just sticking to the things that we do well.”
–Props: “Our midfield – Kylie Barwis, Sam Stone, Hailey Barwis and Devon Crowley – did a really great job because they were asked a lot tonight. PW has a really fast forward line, and our midfield did a really good job of getting up and down the field, supporting the ball offensively but helping the ball out defensively.
“My center back, Tallie Smink, just did a great job of being a wall tonight. She’s such a great leader in the backfield, and she dictates a lot of play. She did a great job on the 16, getting the ball out, because PW was putting a lot of pressure on the ball.
“My goalie, Kiley Moister, had a great game tonight. She saved our butt a few times and just came up with some really key saves that could have changed the outcome of the game but also changed the tone of the game as well.”
Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Charise Halteman:
–On the game: “PW and North Penn played a competitive game tonight with lots of exciting plays and close calls. North Penn got on the board first with 2:36 remaining in the second half off a broken-down corner play. PW responded early in the third quarter when Julz Scherzer knocked one in off the post, also off a broken corner play at the 12:37 mark. North Penn scored again at the 10:31 mark in the fourth quarter. Despite some additional chances for PW, the team couldn’t find the back of the net before time expired. Goalkeeper Carly Spinner played well in the cage and numerous players stepped up as we dealt with some injuries throughout the game.”
Up next: North Penn (7-4, 2-3 SOL) will host Central Bucks West on Thursday, and Plymouth Whitemarsh will travel to Quakertown for a key division battle Thursday (7pm).

Non-league
PARKLAND 2, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1 (OT)
The Bucks – who had not lost since their season opener – saw their streak of eight straight games without a loss snapped on Thursday night in a classic non-league battle.
Neither team got on the scoreboard until Parkland’s Jenna Mayer scored just over a minute into the third quarter. Late in the same quarter, the Bucks answered when Aida Ierubino scored with a Lucy Smith assist.
That score stood until Parkland scored early in OT.
While the Bucks were disappointed, they were not discouraged.
“I love this team – it’s fun and they care about each other,” West coach Lori Ierubino said. “I know they will be motivated by this loss to come together to correct what needs fixing and grow as a team.”

Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino:
–On the game: “Heartbreaker tonight against a competitive Parkland team. We had offensive opportunities that didn’t go our way tonight and a few defensive moments where we watched in poor position and Parkland capitalized. I thought we fought hard together as a team so I cannot fault our effort. We need to do better offensively, taking advantage of scoring chances like corners. And defensively we need to organize earlier and defend as a unit. It stinks to lose, but there is the silver lining of a loss that forces you to look at the game more critically for weaknesses and areas that need improvement before postseason.”
–Props: “Shout outs to Quinn Carrol, Kendra Pitts and Lucy Smith for their standout play tonight.
Up next: Central Bucks West (7-2-1) will host Wissahickon on Monday.
