Freedom Division
LOWER MORELAND 3, UPPER MORELAND 0
Cara Torgan scored the team’s first goal and assisted on its final tally as Lower Moreland topped neighborhood rival Upper Moreland in Friday’s Freedom Division matchup.
Scoring summary
First quarter
Cara Torgan (LM), 8:25
Second quarter
Alexis MacPhee (LM), 2:43 off a corner-straight shot
Third quarter
Maci London (LM) assisted by Cara Torgan
Fourth quarter
No scoring
Lower Moreland coach Debbie Lawlor: “We didn’t get our feet under us until midway through the first quarter. We had 14 fabulous shots on goal, many just wide of the net, but continued to pressure and began to put the tallies in the scorebook. Cara Torgan’s game play was pristine and fun to watch. It was a great outing for Lower Moreland.”
Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey: “Upper Moreland put pressure on right from the start with several corners and shots on goal. We definitely dominated the first few minutes but could not put the ball in the goal. Then Lower Moreland scored at the end of the first quarter on their first break into the circle, and that seemed to be a game changer.
“From there, UM was back on their heels and not able to get much offensive pressure. We seemed to struggle in the heat because of some players getting over sickness. Not making excuses but it’s been a problem for a week or two.
“Also, the whistle was blowing every few seconds against either team, which led to no continuity during the game and it became just a game of free hits.
“Even though Lower Moreland scored 3 goals, Tierney Hogan played well making 9 saves.
Overall, Lower Moreland took advantage of their opportunities in the circle and UM could not connect.”
Up next: Lower Moreland will host Council Rock North at 3:30 pm Monday. The Golden Heads will host Pennsbury at 3:30 pm Monday.

Abington coach Janine Beal: “It was a total team win today where everyone contributed and stepped up. We were determined to come out early and get on the board and we did just that. Our team worked hard to keep the ball down in Council Rock South’s circle throughout a majority of the game. They utilized a lot of what we worked on in practice this week, and reviewed on film, and it was nice to see it work to their benefit.
“The girls really came out with a lot of energy today and played hard the whole game. The heat was brutal, but they continued to push themselves to ensure we got a win. We really played as a team today and the results showed that!”
—Props: “Junior mid Gwen Judge had a great game and was all over the field, both offensively and defensively. Senior forward Janice Coonahan also helped create a lot of offensive opportunities by running the field and getting the ball in the circle. Sophomore mid Devon Doyle has also stepped up the past two games and is playing really well for us. Junior goalie Keely Gallagher and senior goalie Palmina D’Angelo split the game to preserve the shutout.”
Up next: The Golden Hawks visit neighborhood archrival Council Rock North at 11 am today. The Ghosts will travel to Central Bucks South for a 3:30 pm Monday game.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, BENSALEM 2
Norah Haber and Kenzie Harmen scored first-quarter goals to stake Hatboro-Horsham out to a 2-0 lead, and the Hatters held off a Bensalem second-half comeback attempt to pull out a 3-2 victory – their third win in three games this week – in Friday’s SOL Crossover game.
The Hatters made it 3-0 early in the second quarter when goalkeeper-turned forward Mia Fisher found the back of the cage.
The Owls showed some grit and attempted a second-half comeback, starting with freshman Leah Vorgity in the third quarter. Less than 2 minutes into the second half, Veronica Lennon assisted on the Vorgity goal, her first varsity goal and Lennon’s fifth assist of the season.
Halfway through the final quarter, senior Keana Rodrigez found sophomore Kylie Blank on the doorstep and Blank deposited it into the cage to make it a 3-2 game. It was Rodriguez’ first point of the year and Blank’s fifth goal of the season.
The win capped off a stellar week for the Hatters, who blanked Cheltenham 8-0 on Monday and dominated Harry S Truman 9-1 on Wednesday.
Scoring summary
First quarter
Norah Haber (H-H), assisted by Annabelle Deacon, 13:01
Kenzie Harmen (H-H), 0:09
Second quarter
Mia Fisher (H-H), 11:54
Third quarter
Leah Vorgity (B), from Veronica Lennon, 13:21
Fourth quarter
Kylie Blank (B), from Keana Rodriguez, 7:56
Hatboro-Horsham coach Marie Schmucker: “It was a great team win. They played really well. It was their third game of the week, and they hung tough. We played on grass, and we dominated. It was 3-0, but we kind of eased up a little. But overall, they weren’t used to the grass and the heat. It was hot out today, but they still fought.
“They came out with intensity like you couldn’t imagine the first quarter, the whole first half, and then there was a little lull. We got caught not marking in the circle, but overall, they played great – great passing, great teamwork. It was a total team effort.”
—Props: “Annabelle Deacon was all over the field today and had a huge game. The girls hustled from beginning to end. Norah Haber had a huge game. Senior goalie Sydney Matthews had 7 saves and was helped out by some great defense by senior Sophia Waynick and senior Madeline Lee.”
Bensalem coach Gary Kubik: “We just came out so flat today. The offense has been sleeping through most of this season, but the whole team lacked the energy that we need to compete. We were without a couple key players today and that didn’t help, either. The whole team was able to get themselves back up and play today but we’re not talented enough yet to spot any teams in this league a lead, let alone a three-goal lead. It’s amazing what success and confidence can do to these players, but we have to have that confidence and swagger right from the jump and we didn’t have it today.
—Props: “It was nice to see our freshman (Leah Vorgity) getting her first varsity goal, and for that effort she was awarded the Outstanding Owl. Veronica Lennon played another strong game today, as well as Keana Rodriguez, they both had great efforts in the midfield.”
Up next: The Hatters will look to extend their winning streak when they visit Pennridge at 5 pm Monday. Bensalem will visit William Tennent at 7 pm Monday.
