Fricke was also helped by two defensive saves from junior Lexi Hartman and senior Lucciana Krecko. Fricke also stopped a stroke attempt with 9:01 remaining in the game. That effort was good enough for her to become the winner of the first ever Outstanding Owl trophy and win the coveted prize.”

(Article submitted by Pennsbury field hockey)
It was a great way to kick off September at Falcon Field for Pennsbury’s second game of the season. Coming off a huge win against Truman, the orange and black were ready to face the Bensalem Owls, another Patriot division opponent. Using their “THE TIME IS NOW – No One Waits” mantra, Pennsbury set the tone right away by earning a penalty corner in the first four minutes. PHS did not convert on the corner opportunity, but did connect from the field two minutes later when Ryan Burdette took a shot on goal and Regan Rodriguez cleaned up the rebound and found the back of the cage. The Falcons went up 2-0 with two minutes left in the first quarter when Abby Iacona scored with an assist by Rodriguez.
Pennsbury held the two-goal lead through the second quarter but could not get another one by Bensalem’s brick wall of a keeper, Hailey Fricke, for the full 15 minutes. It was not for lack of trying or having opportunities – Fricke is a beast in the cage.
“Our forwards were pounding shots at the goalie, and she just kept making saves. She came out to meet the ball, was agile and aggressive, and made our girls work really hard to add to the scoreboard,” explained Pennsbury head coach, Traci Curtis.
A little more than halfway through the third quarter sophomore, Allie Fouss subbed in for the left forward and scored right away on a great pass from Iacona from the right.
“Fouss literally ran onto the field straight to where she needed to be and put one past the keeper perfectly. Before the game I had actually practiced the execution of scoring on the left with Fouss and she applied it immediately,” Curtis said. “That’s what we love about these girls – they are sponges and so dedicated to being great. They work hard for the greater good.”
The Falcons didn’t let up and had momentum going into the fourth. Seven minutes in, Iacona shot a bullet at Fricke and sophomore, Lily Fanini grabbed the rebound and snuck it past the keeper making it a 4-0 game. Iacona iced the cake two minutes later with an assist from Ava Pinto to put PHS up 5-0. That scored held until the final buzzer.
“Pinto and Rodriguez are a great combo who communicate so well and work the right side of our field with strength and poise. They make a lot happen,” said Curtis.
“Abby Iacona is an all around play maker – distributing, cutting, and putting the ball on cage with a lot of power,” said Curtis of the stand out junior.
“Our defense is a solid unit who works well together. They took a risk and pushed up playing very offensively today and that is a style we will use throughout the season when we are able to apply it,” Curtis explained.
“I have to give so much credit to the Bensalem goalie who was really fun to watch. We tallied 35 shots on goal, and she saved 30 of them with strength and determination,” said Curtis. “She forced us to get creative and continuously adjust the entire game.”
Curtis adds, “Early season games are exciting as we meet up with each team and gain a better understanding of ourselves as a unit. We are still experimenting and discovering our chemistry. We love having unending strong combinations to use. We are moving forward one step at a time – moment by moment.”
The Falcons will travel to Neshaminy on Thursday for an afternoon battle against the Skins.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2, PENNRIDGE 1
A tight contest between the visiting Patriots and host Rams was not decided until the very last whistle. Central Bucks East opened the scoring late in the first half on a corner goal scored by Brynn Bonargo. The Patriots added another as time dwindled in the third quarter, with Sydney Lafferty taking the ball up the field and finding Bonargo for the finish.
Pennridge surged back in the fourth quarter with a relentless attack, finding the back of the cage at the 5:07 mark to cut the lead to one. The Rams earned a penalty corner with time expiring, but the Patriots were able to stave off a tying goal to secure the win.

–Props: “Brynn Bonargo had a phenomenal game powering the offense while Megan Fahey, Emerson McFeely, and Sydney Lafferty acted as catalysts in the midfield. Sophia Gerken was a real spitfire on offense tonight, giving us some good scoring opportunities.”
Pennridge coach Chris Chookagian:
–On the game: “What a tight game that kept everyone on their toes until the very end. It was nice to see the players bounce back after two tough losses. It’s a new week with renewed energy. Although tonight was not the outcome we were hoping for, we are taking steps in the right direction to be where we want to be at the end of the season. It’s starting to click, and you can see the growth in each player.”
–Props: “The coaches loved to see the team-first play that drove the fourth quarter, each player demonstrated a tremendous amount of composure and effort under the pressure when they were on the field”

Sparked by the hat trick from Carrie Williams, the Titans rolled to their fifth win without a loss.
Early on, there was nothing to suggest this would be another big win for the Titans as the Knights – behind a pair of Kylie Barwis goals – opened up a 2-0 lead after one quarter. The Titans answered with three goals in the second. Addison Edwards scored the first goal, and then it was Williams putting a pair on the board to send the Titans into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
Williams and Edwards each scored a goal in the third quarter, giving the Titans their final margin of victory.

Central Bucks South coach Kelli Chioffe:
–On the game: “We had a slow start today against a very strong North Penn team. They caught us off guard scoring two first-quarter goals. It was our first day of school, so maybe that had something to do with it. Regardless, the girls found a way to get locked in and got some shots on goal.
“In the huddle after the first quarter, the team decided that this was not how they wanted the game to go. The girls took control of the game and scored three goals in the second quarter. They really came alive. They kept pressuring and attacking the ball. They found one another with some great passing sequences and taking risks in the offensive circle. We are so proud of the girls for turning things around today.”
–Props: “Great play from our forwards once again. Carrie Williams had a hat trick, and Addison Edwards scored two goals. Amy Hazell and Kaeli VanDerSluis worked hard to generate the offensive attack. Our midfielders – Avery Tyler, Jenna Butler, Tessa Walls, and Ella Marchesi – played really great today. Our defense was led by Sophia Kraft, Kelly Hemsley and Jordyn Jaffe. Nora McQueen had 7 saves. We will continue to practice hard.”

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 6, SOUDERTON 1
There’s a mutual respect when West and Souderton meet on the hockey field. Both teams have had their share of success in the Colonial Division. On Tuesday night, it was the two-time defending champion Bucks who had the upper hand, opening up a 5-0 lead before Souderton got on the scoreboard.
Laney Hall (Claire Demmer assist) scored during corner play midway through the opening quarter to give the Bucks a lead they would not lose.
Aida Ierubino and Claire Demmer led a balanced West attack with two goals and one assist each.
Autumn Wenger scored the Indians’ lone goal during corner play with time expired in the third quarter.

Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino:
–On the game: “We came into this game knowing Souderton is a well-coached, physical team with well-executed corners. I was pleased with our team defense both individually and as a unit. Our passing game was the difference in this game, providing many fast-paced attacks to goal.’
–Props: “Shoutout to Heidi Schoenleber who was pivotal in transitioning from defense to attack. Kudos to Aida Ierubino, Claire Demmer, and Ellie Tweddale for amazing passing combinations. We are satisfied with the solid win against a competitive team but are now focused on our next opponent, CB South.”
Souderton coach Sue Casciato:
–On the game: “Tonight we simply got beat by a better team. CB West is athletic and physically dominant. Their transition is really fast as they can spread the field with long, hard, accurate passes. Our goalie Nina Coll had some nice saves, but some of West’s crosses and resulting shots were too tough to stop. I was proud that our team competed hard throughout, but obviously, we have areas that need to be improved.”

–On the game: “Our goal for today was to focus on playing simple hockey—moving the ball into the spaces where our teammates needed to be and stepping to every ball. While the outcome was not what we had hoped for, I was proud of how our team finished the game by fighting hard and pushing back until the very last minutes.”

Abington coach Janine Larr:
–On the game: “I was really happy with how the girls played today. The never gave up or got flustered, despite a scoreless game going into the fourth quarter. They kept their composure, despite limited offensive opportunities in the first half of the game and they really made the most of any opportunities they had in the second half of the game. Our bench has been stepping up, as well, and helping provide needed energy and opportunity, which has been nice to see. It’s been a nice start to the season so far.”
–The game-winner: “Senior forward Janice Coonahan scored the lone goal of the game off an assist from senior mid Carly Hughes at the 3:31 mark of the fourth quarter. Janice did a great job of breaking free, and Carly was able to execute a perfect pass, which allowed Janice to take the ball in and get a shot off on the goalie, that she directed perfectly to the back of the cage. Janice has been all over the net the past few games/scrimmages, so I knew she was due to connect on a goal, and we were really happy she did so today when she did.”
–Props: “Shoutout to Carly Hughes and Maeve Link, who did a great job of getting the ball in the midfield and pushing it down the field to create some offensive opportunities for us. Carly was literally all over the field getting her stick on everything and Maeve did a great job of stepping to the ball and getting off great hits to move the ball up the field for Abington.
“On the defensive end, junior defensive back Morgan Gillette continued her exceptional play and made it difficult for Upper Dublin to get any easy scoring opportunities in the circle. Senior defensive back Kirsten Sanders also made some key plays and nice clears to help keep Upper Dublin from scoring.
“Junior goalie Keely Gallagher again continued strong play in the net and recorded 8 saves to preserve the shutout.”

Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey:
–On the game: “We played well defensively but were not able to make an offensive push. New Hope is so tough because of their speed and higher level stick skills. Bears’ goalie Tierney Hogan was phenomenal in goal in her first game under pressure. Hogan had 32 saves and several successful clears stepping up to intercept the ball. The game was scoreless after the first quarter and no goals allowed in the fourth quarter.”
–Props: “Bridget Hess, Reese Purcell, Addi Gans and Ella Gould were awesome as a team in the circle. This group played well on multiple shorthanded corner plays and only allowed two goals on corners. As New Hope continued to pressure, we tried stronger players at different positions to play more defensively. Melissa Torpey and MJ Reilly played well in different positions and Olivia Torres played her heart out unselfishly all game at multiple positions.
“We had three games where it was mostly on our offensive end, so our defense was tested today and rose to the occasion. Even though we lost, we learned a lot and played well against the strongest team in our division.”
