SOL crossover non-league
SOUDERTON 3, QUAKERTOWN 2
The Indians had to feel they were in command when Hannah Fuente scored a goal in the opening minutes of the third quarter. After all, they not only led 2-0, but they knew it could have been even more had they not seen a pair of goals waved off in the first half.
“I think we maybe got overconfident and didn’t step to the ball as much,” said Fuente, whose two goals led the Indians. “We let them take advantage once we were up and we thought we had it. They scored, and we realized – ‘Oh shoot, we’ve got to get back into it,’ and we would get another goal.”
Just over two minutes after Cassidy Landis scored on a corner shot (Cameron Landis assist), Gianna Bocchino answered with a goal at the other end of the field, also on a well-executed corner after receiving the insert pass from Brooke Wagner to give the Indians a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers made things interesting when – with 1:16 remaining in regulation – Cassidy Landis connected on her second goal, almost a duplicate of her first on a corner – this one with an assist from Penny Longacre. That 3-2 score stood until the final whistle.
The evenly played game was the story of two halves. The Indians drew eight of their 11 corners in the first half while the Panthers drew eight of their 11 corners in the second half.
“Quakertown played with a lot of energy in the second half,” said Souderton coach Sue Casciato, going on to credit the play of Fuente. “She’s the best (defensive corner) flier I’ve ever seen because she’s fearless, and she’s super quick. She has blocked so many hard shots.”
Monday’s win was the seventh straight for the Indians and 10th in 12 games.
“I feel like we just always want to be out here, and we’re always pushing,” said Fuente, who is committed to continue her hockey career at Stevens Institute of Technology where she will major in bio-molecular engineering. “We have very good chemistry – we’ve done a lot of team bonding, and I think that’s helped.
“We’re all working together as a team a lot more rather than just doing it individually. I feel like our passing is a lot better. I’m having a lot of fun, the girls are having a lot of fun. I feel like everyone wants to be here, and we get super hyped before games.”

Souderton coach Sue Casciato: “We haven’t been able to play consistent hockey for 60 minutes. We either start well and fizzle at the end, or we start kind of slowly and then manage to play well the second half. We’ve made a lot of games more interesting than they need to be.
“We had two goals called back in the first half. One went off the goalie’s pads high, and it went into the cage, but they called it too high. That’s just a judgment call. The other one – we just have to be smarter. When the ball comes out (on corners), we have to be sure before we pass it that it’s left the circle, and we didn’t, so that was unfortunate.”
Quakertown coach Peach Draper: “What a game! It was an exciting high level field hockey from start to finish, and our team never gave up. The first 15-minute quarter ended in a defensive deadlock at 0-0, with both sides showing strong ball movement and hustle. With just 3:30 left before halftime, Souderton’s Hannah Fuente found the back of the cage off an assist from Gianna Bocchino, putting us down 1-0 at the break. At halftime, we focused on generating more offensive attack and improving our chances in the circle.
“Unfortunately, early in the third quarter, Souderton extended their lead when Fuente scored her second goal of the day at 12:15, making it 2-0. But our team’s response showed our heart, we never stopped fighting. We earned corner after corner, and in the fourth quarter, the breakthrough came. At 8:53, Cameron Landis inserted to her older sister Cassidy, who ripped a powerful shot from the top of the circle. The loud crack against the backboard made it 2-1 and gave us new energy.
“Souderton struck back quickly, though, as Bocchino scored off a feed from Brooke Wagner at 6:14 to stretch the lead to 3-1. Still, we refused to quit. After a timeout, Cassidy Landis threaded a beautiful through ball that split the defense, finding Penny Longacre for a near goal that earned us another corner. With just 1:16 left, Penny inserted to Cassidy, who buried our second goal of the game to close the gap to 3-2.
“Time ran out before we could push it to overtime, but the match was electric from start to finish. Both teams tallied 11 corners, and the passing sequences on both sides kept the crowd on edge. While the scoreboard didn’t end in our favor, there was plenty to celebrate, our resilience, our teamwork, and our never-quit mentality. This game showed just how much potential we have moving forward.”
Up next: Souderton will host Pennridge Thursday (5pm), and Quakertown will host Plymouth Whitemarsh (7pm).

PENNRIDGE 2, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1
Entering the second half of the season, the Rams came out with renewed energy. Senior Elsa Parsons opened up the scoring with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter. Stopping the ball exiting the circle, she sent a bouncy ball back toward the goal, and it found its way to the back of the cage.
“Less than two minutes later, junior Paige Cowper forced a turnover near the Rams 30-yard line, and started a run where the ball would find its way to senior Lexi Capo, who then set up sophomore Deegan Smith to score the second goal for the Rams.
Hatboro closed the goal differential to one with 10:02 left in the third quarter. Avery Mullen scored on a rocket from the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Both teams would exchange runs for the remainder of the game, but the Rams stood tall in the end of the fourth with a relentless attack as the time ticked to zero.”

Pennridge coach Chris Chookagian on the game: “Tonight we achieved our fifth team win, a mark we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season. The commitment by this team to get 1% better each day is inspiring, and it’s great to see that progress reflected on gameday. We have some tough competition ahead, and we are excited to keep it going.”
Hatboro-Horsham coach Marie Schmucker: “We lost a tough one today at Pennridge. They scored twice in the first half and that put us in a tough spot. After last week’s three games, the girls were a little tired. But they regrouped and turned it up in the second half. Senior Avery Mullen cut the lead in half in the third quarter at 10:02 with a nice goal off a corner assisted by junior Kenzie Harmon. That gave us some momentum, but we couldn’t tie it up. Pennridge has a lot of nice players that kept the ball in our end. We had a few chances but couldn’t capitalize in the last quarter. The girls have been gaining confidence and doing the small things. They’re learning and growing each week and it’s nice to see the progression.”
–Props: “Juniors Norah Haber and Annabelle Deacon played well for us. They had intensity and kept the pressure on. Junior Brianna Soto with her speed added some offense but we couldn’t finish. Junior Riley O’Brien played well for us defensively as well as Senior goalie Sydney Matthews after the two early goals.”

Just 14 seconds separated the Lions from a shutout, but Neshaminy got on the scoreboard in the game’s closing seconds when Lauren Staines scored.
The Lions – second in the latest District 1 1A rankings – held an advantage in both shots and penalty corners.

Bensalem coach Gary Kubik:
–On the game: “The Owls had a disallowed goal at the end of the first quarter by Keana Rodriguez and couldn’t get their offense turned up again until 9:12 left in the second when freshman Leah Vorgity finished one in front with a great pass from sophomore Kylie Blank. All of our forwards were buzzing tonight but they just weren’t able to finish.
“Seniors Abby Kazimer, Keana Rodriguez and Chloe Masciantonio were all around the net tonight with opportunities. They put a lot of pressure on the Tennant goalkeeper. That score stood up throughout the rest of the game. Tennant came up with a few chances toward the end of the game, but our defense and goalkeeper Hailey Fricke, kept them shut out. Tennant earned three important corners in the fourth but were unable to get one past her.
–Props: “Freshman Leah Vorgity has had herself a week, scoring her first two goals in high school in the last two games.
“The midfield of Paige Dando, Anjali Guda, Tierney Sayers, Peyton DeCarlo, Reese Sayers, and junior Veronica Lennon were solid tonight. They were connecting on passes and really pressuring the Tennant midfield. They put so many good balls up to the forwards tonight. The defense, too, was productive, challenging the Tennant forwards and keeping the ball to the outside. Lucciana Krecko probably had her best game of the year; Makayla Duncan, Reagan Colgan, and Lexi Hartman competed all night. Sophomore standout Abby Cheung continued her calm, composed play in her first year as a varsity starter.
–Tennent shoutout: “A Tennent shoutout to senior Cailyn George, who has been a staple for William Tennent for the past few years. She had an awesome game tonight and I wish her much success in her future.

Central Bucks East coach Emma Rosenthal: “The theme of today was ‘control what we can control.’ It took us the first quarter to really own that and play to every whistle, but once we did, the team made some good things happen. It was great to have Brynn Bonargo back from injury on the forward line – she had 2 of our 3 goals today. We’ve really been working hard on finishing and being smart in the circle with drawing corners and taking different kinds of shots, and I’m happy that we accomplished that in the second half today. We’re excited to get back into division play this week.”

Fluid passing by our midfielders and forwards today. Strong midfield presence today by Jenna Butler, Avery Tyler, Tessa Walls and Ella Marchesi. They were finding each other on the field and taking their space.

Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey: “We put up a tough fight vs Pennsbury. The score was 2 -0 at halftime and we were hoping to turn around the game like the Eagles! I was trying to use them as inspiration! It was 3-0 after three quarters, then unfortunately they put in a few more goals at the end of the game.”
–Props: “Our athletic goalie, Tierney Hogan, had another outstanding performance with 35 saves. What is remarkable about Hogan is her agility during multiple shots in the circle. She will save a hard shot on one side, go down in the scrum, then when they get a shot on the other side, she has already reversed and gone down to cover the other side. The Pennsbury coach commented that they were very frustrated with her amount of saves until they were able to score a few at the end of the game.
“Hogan also plays basketball and lacrosse (as a field player), so her athleticism is a definite asset in the position. She grew up with 2 older brothers and a lot of athletic cousins who always challenged her, so she continues to be resilient and gritty in the cage.
“In the first half, the defensive unit of Addi Gans, Reese Purcell, Abby Kelly and Lyla Soleau kept Pennsbury at bay only allowing 2 goals (17 saves for Hogan). With Pennsbury’s aggressive play, Addi Gans had three defensive saves in the first half along with Soleau and Purcell each adding another as the game continued.”

The Falcons kicked off the week with a trip to Upper Moreland to face the Golden Bears. Just about 48 hours after a tough 1-0 loss on Saturday to Quakertown, PHS was ready to get down to business and get the job done. They dominated possession from the start and set the tone with patient passing and solid connections.
Four minutes into the first quarter, Abby Iacona sent a perfect pass to the stroke where Regan Rodriguez was waiting – Rodriguez beat the goalie with a well-timed shot before the keeper could get back to center and meet the ball to make it a 1-0 game.
“Abby Iacona is a playmaker and has so many tools in her pocket,” said Pennsbury coach Traci Curtis. “It is fun to watch her do the work to set up goals like the first one today. Her ability to feed and assist contributes greatly to our offense.
“Rodriguez navigates the right side with confidence and works so well with Iacona and midfielder Ava Pinto. That first goal happened using total teamwork and that’s what we love to see.”
The second quarter was dominated by Pennsbury as they earned a dozen penalty corners so far in the game and had even more shots on goal. Iacona connected to score her first of the game with five minutes left in the second quarter. Cailyn Reilly took a rocket shot on goal off a corner play, and Iacona collected the rebound off pads and put the ball into the corner with a reverse lift.
PHS was ahead 2-0 going into the half, but statistically speaking, they weren’t finishing nearly enough. Despite the Falcons disallowing UM to cross the 50 yd line offensively, they were still struggling to find the cage until the final three minutes of the third quarter.
During penalty corner play, Regan Rodriguez sent the ball across cage where Nandi Ntshalintshali protected the post and poked it past the UM goalie just in time. PHS went up 3-0.
“The Upper Moreland goalie is beyond talented,” Curtis said. “She is agile, quick, smart, and has an eye for the ball. She denied so many scoring opportunities. The only way to get around her was to move the ball at mock speed and use lifts if possible.
“The Golden Bear players packed themselves in the circle, so it was very difficult to navigate our scoring opportunities with precision – that is where all the penalty corners came into play because there were so many feet in the way.”
Two of the first three goals were off corner play.
“It was frustrating to have 17 corners and almost 30 shots on cage and only have three goals, but it was forcing us to get creative, try a ton of different things, and think outside the box,” said Curtis. “Fighting through all of the traffic in the circle was helping us to hone our skills, keep the ball on our stick, and take more shots from the outside.”
Pennsbury didn’t wait as long to add to the score in the fourth quarter. Three minutes in, the orange and black earned a penalty corner – it was their 18th. Cailyn Reilly adjusted when the play got derailed, and she made a pass down low to Allie Fouss. Fouss sent it to goal, and Nandi Ntshalintshali collected the pass, spun, and hit the back corner. That was Ntshalintshali’s second goal in a row, stretching the lead to 4-0.
Iacona scored her second goal of the game six minutes later on a pass from Rodriguez that she received and put straight to goal and squeaked it through the keeper’s attempt at a split save. The Falcons led 5-0 with six minutes left to play. As the final seconds ticked down, the orange and black took advantage of implementing quick decision making on a long hit opportunity. Iacona put the ball on cage from outside the circle and Ryan Burdette was there for the rebound off the pads. Burdette pulled back and lifted the ball on cage for the sixth goal of the game. The buzzer rang right as the ball crossed the white line.
“The final play was a great example of being aware and knowing the clock,” said Curtis. “Burdette choosing to lift was a response to our needing to be super creative with their stellar goalie. It was a great way to finish and put an exclamation point on the day.”
Pennsbury will travel again on Thursday for a league match up with Harry S Truman, their second meeting of the season.

Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino:

This included Mac West, Grace McGrath netting her first goal of the season, Eve Damsker adding one of her own, and Quinn Carroll recording her first career varsity goal. Wissahickon had very good corner defense shutting down 10 of our 11 attempts.”
Wisssahickon coach Hannah Havrilla: “Today’s game was a tough one, but I am proud of our team for competing from start to finish and for working the right side of the field to create opportunities. Props to our goalie, Ava Fell, who recorded 17 outstanding saves to keep us in the game and continues to be a strong leader in the defensive end.
