PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 2, UPPER MORELAND
The Colonials maintained their stronghold on the top spot in the American Conference standings with a shutout win in a battle of the conference’s top two squads heading into Tuesday’s action.
For the Golden Bears, the loss halted their six-game winning streak and dropped them into a third place behind PW and Upper Dublin.
“It was a well-played, hard-fought game by both teams,” coach Marianne Paparone said. “It was an important win against a very competitive team.”
It’s been quite some time since Upper Moreland found itself near the top of the standings.
“When I was at Wissahickon and first came to PW, they had all the big-name players,” Paparone said. “They had (Lauren) Dagostino, (Megan) Fortunato, and I was thinking about those kids today.
“It’s been such a long time since they’ve been in this position. My kids don’t know Upper Moreland ever in that capacity.”
In 1996, a Fortunato-led Upper Moreland squad defeated three-time defending District One AAA champion Council Rock in overtime to advance to the district title game where they upended Methacton for the district crown.
A lot has changed since then.
But the Golden Bears appear to be righting the ship. Last year, they brought an end to a 31-game SOL losing streak, and this year, they found themselves in second place after one go-round in conference play.
“They have all the attributes that you want your team to have,” Paparone said. “They have pretty good speed, they definitely have some stick skills, they have good spacing, their defense played tough in the circle.
“Their goalie (Allison Felicetti) made all the right saves. They’re a team who believes in themselves and had some success and gained some confidence, and you can see that out on the field.”
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Paige Totten – who scored both of her team’s goals – put the Colonials on the scoreboard at the 18:21 mark, using an assist from Sophie Kolkka. An unassisted goal by Totten at the 4:14 mark gave the Colonials their final margin of victory.
“We created a lot of scoring chances but were not able to capitalize in the first half,” said Paparone. “Our defense is starting to come together to play with more composure and consistency, and it was very important to get a shutout today.
“Rita Trainer and Kolby Bechtel led the defensive effort, but I was pleased with our effort at both ends of the field as well as the midfield.”
The Colonials controlled the game statistically, holding an advantage in shots (20-8) and corners (10-1).
Felicetti was credited with 10 saves in goal for the Golden Bears while PW’s Tori Byrne had six saves in the shutout win.
In an early season meeting at PW, the Colonials defeated the Golden Bears 6-0.
“Just like we don’t like to go on grass, they are, I’m sure, uncomfortable on turf,” Paparone said. “For them to be on the grass today, they were a very different team. They obviously are a grass team, and they handle it really well, and they competed really hard.”
The Colonials upped their record to 8-0 in league play (9-2 overall) while the Golden Bears are 5-2-1 in the league (6-3-1 overall).

SPRINGFIELD (MONTCO) 1, WISSAHICKON 0
Christine Campbell turned a Katherine McVeigh pass into a goal, breaking a 0-0 second halftime tie and propelling the Spartans to the win.
“It was a good game,” coach Linda Nixon said. “They’re missing some players, but so are we.
“I thought we played with a lot more enthusiasm. They’ve been growing, and today was just a culmination of them really working hard. We haven’t beaten them in a couple of years.”
It was the Spartans’ first win over the Trojans since Sept. 10, 2012.
Nixon lauded the efforts of Campbell, McVeigh and Brianna Buckley.
“Morale-wise, it was really good,” she said of Tuesday’s win. “We have just been struggling with who to put where on the field.
“We just had a good game. I thought we played really well against Upper Dublin, and we lost 1-0. We had so many more opportunities to score than they did, but they just capitalized on one. It was a shame we couldn’t get at least a draw out of that, and it wasn’t to be. We played hard that day also. We’ve had back-to-back games where we put some effort in. We’ll take it and run.”
The Spartans evened their record at 4-4 in league play (5-5 overall) while the Trojans are 4-3-1 in the league (4-5-1 overall).

Christian scored back-to-back goals in just over two minutes to complete her personal hat trick before the Eagles received single goals from Taylor Werkiser, Tori Braxton and Natalie Mitchell to make it a 5-3 game. Mitchell had a hand in all three goals, assisting on the first two and scoring the third.
The Flying Cardinals had a 27-6 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in corners. Norristown goalie Lauren Whitley was credited with 10 saves.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1, NORTH PENN
Alexa Milanesi turned an assist from Steph Litzenberger into the game winner midway through the second half of Tuesday’s classic conference battle.
“It was a great game,” South coach Brittany Grzywacz said. “I think we’ve been improving throughout the season, but I think North Penn is a team we match up really well with, and that’s what made it a really good game.”
For Milanesi, it was her second game winner in the last three games. She also scored South’s lone goal in its 1-0 win over Central Bucks West on Friday.
“She’s getting those touches in there,” Grzywacz said of Milanesi. “That’s something we’ve been focusing on, just getting those touches around the keeper.
“She’s one of those players who is really good at it.”
The Titans held an advantage in shots and corners.
“We did come out hard the first half, and we were pretty strong,” Grzywacz said. “That’s when a lot of our corners and shots came, especially in the first 10-15 minutes, but it was a very even matchup. They had almost the same number of corners, and they got a lot of shots off as well. I feel we almost play the same style, and that makes a good game.”
The Titans’ first-year coach called the big win a team effort.
“I’m just really happy with the way the team is coming together and playing as a whole,” Grzywacz said. “There were girls that had great games, but everybody played really well today.
“It was the same thing in our game against West. All the defenders played well, all the midfielders played well, all the forwards played well, and when girls came off the bench, they played well also.
“We’re connecting now, we’re hitting those stick-to-stick passes, and it’s just great to see that over time and as the season progresses and they get used to playing with each other, they know where each other is going to be, and they have more trust in each other now to make those plays.”
Grzywacz went on to commend the efforts of several players.
“I thought Steph (Litzenberger) had a good game on the forward line,” she said. “(Right mid) Ally McDonald played outstanding. She was really hustling throughout the whole game, but again, it’s one of those things where the whole team was just really working hard and hustling throughout the whole game.
“The end of the game got pretty intense with it being such a close game, and everyone just really toughed it out until the end.”
The Titans upped their record to 8-0 in league play (9-2 overall) while the Maidens are 5-3 in the league (6-4 overall).

HATBORO-HORSHAM 2, SOUDERTON 0
Jaime DiQuattro turned a Kelsy Hopkins pass into a goal with 2:39 remaining in the first half to break a scoreless tie. That 1-0 lead held until Gabby Acker scored with 4:16 remaining on a shot described by coach Laura Swezey as a “beautiful backsweep shot.”
The Hatters, who drew 15 corners, spent the game pelting Souderton goalie Shelby Landes with shots. All told, they took 31 shots – six hit the post, and Landes turned away 25 in a dazzling effort.
“Shelby Landes did an amazing job in goal,” Hatters’ coach Laura Swezey said. “The Hatters had consistent runs up the field, controlling the ball with the midfield of Kelsy Hopkins, Casey Swezey, Gabby Acker, Courtney Hewish and Jenna Cutilli transitioning the ball to their offensive circle.”
The Indians, who had nine corners, took 12 shots. Hatter goalie Emily Braunewell turned away 11 shots in the shutout.
The Hatters even their league mark at 4-4 (6-4 overall) while the Indians are 1-7 in the league (3-7 overall).

Midway through the second half, the Bucks added to their lead when Taylor Mason deflected a Bryn Boylan shot into the cage. Just over a minute later, Hitchcock scored, and Boylan connected for her second goal on a chip shot with 3:40 left.
“It was a well-played team game by West offensively as (we) were passing the ball well all over the field,” West coach Courtney Hughes said.
The Bucks held a decided advantage in shots and corners. Quakertown goalie Rylee Lawler was credited with 16 saves while teammate Hillary Scott also came up with a defensive save.
The Bucks are 7-1 in league play (10-1 overall) while the Panthers are 3-5 in the league (6-5 overall).

“Mackenzie Boyle, Abbey Butler and Sarah Sheehy really kept us alive today,” East coach Brittany Kocis said. “They continue to progress every day, which has been clear in their game performances.”
Pennridge coach Becky Spahr also had high praise for several of her players.
“We had great play from our midfielders,” the Rams’ coach said. “We have been working on building our offensive play through our mids, and Meghan Griffin, Kellie Drugotch and Victoria Arnold have really stepped up for us.
“The energy has given us a lot more scoring opportunities the past few games. We just have to work on finishing in the circle. I am excited to see how we improve during the second half of the season.”
