Ava Arbakov played the role of facilitator in Tuesday’s win, setting up four of her team’s six goals. The win was the fourth in a row for the Redskins after dropping their first game of the season.
Paige Comer scored with an assist from Kasey Rieger two minutes into the game only to watch the Indians knot the score on a goal by Izzy Teitelman. In the closing second of the quarter, Maddy Shtino found the cage
to give the Redskins a lead they would not lose.
Arbakov assisted on the final four goals of the game.

We had some good moments of passing. We’re going to continue to work hard together as a team, take one game at a time, and continue to improve.”
–Props: “Defensively, Taylor Tenaglia did a nice job stepping up. Ava Arbakov distributed the ball well getting involved in four goals, and Kasey Rieger hustled up top to generate offense.”

PENNSBURY 4, BENSALEM 0
(Submitted by Pennsbury field hockey)
The Pennsbury Falcons were on the road again for another away contest. This time they traveled to Bensalem to take on the Owls in a league game set against the backdrop of continued gorgeous weather.
Pennsbury got off to a slow start, taking a minute to acclimate to the grass field and getting into a comfortable groove with each other. |
Senior Alaina Bird kicked off the scoring a little more than halfway through the first quarter, slamming a shot by the goalie off a feed from sophomore Ryan Burdette, who had carried the ball into the circle.
“It was a great finish from Alaina in front of the cage and a nice way to open up the scoring,” said coach Traci Curtis.
That goal stood alone for the remainder of the first quarter. The orange and black came out strong on offense at the start of the second quarter with senior Riley Askey finding the back of the cage about five minutes after the clock started.
“We were fighting in the circle, and our attack did a good job of transferring the ball around the space, moving it from right to left,” Curtis said. “Junior Abby Anderer passed the ball across from the baseline and Askey was there in front of the goalie and used a quick shot to beat the keeper.
“ It was nice to see so many players having a hand in the success of that goal – it was executed in a way that reflects the internalization and application of practice drills and chalk talk discussions.”
Five minutes later, the Falcons had an incredible passing sequence up the field which resulted in a well-placed cross pass from the right by sophomore Ava Pinto, and Askey was again in the right place to one-time the ball with strength into the cage. The halftime score had the Falcons leading 3-0, but there was still work to be done.
“We were not completely satisfied with our performance and needed to sharpen some facets of our game,” said Curtis. “Despite some great passing combos and smart decision making, we could not finish during the third quarter until the final minute. We earned a corner, which was one of our discussion pieces at the half.
“The corner was broken up, but we were fighting in the dirt to finish, and sophomore Abby Iacona played it smart, using a quick reaction reverse lift into goal off a rebound during the scuffle. It was a heads up play and deceptive because she had her back to the goal and the keeper never saw it coming. This is the type of offensive push we are really working to master – relentless and gritty and getting those second and third opportunities on every attempt.”
Iacona’s goal made it a 4-0 game, and that would remain the score up to the final buzzer.
“It was a whole group effort, and everyone contributed in some way. We are definitely proud of that aspect of today,” Curtis said. “We saw hustle and heart from everyone, which we will carry with us into tomorrow as we prepare for the next step on the ladder. We will work to continue to fine tune, get creative, work smarter, and use our strengths in all the right places.”
Up next: Pennsbury (3-0, 2-0 SOL) will host Neshaminy on Thursday (5 pm), and Bensalem (1-2, 0-2) will host Harry S Truman Thursday.

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, SOUDERTON 2 (OT)
It was just the second of 10 games in the SOL season, but this one felt big for both teams.
It took overtime to determine a winner, and in the end, it came down to two highlight reel plays – the first, a brilliant defensive play by West goalie Kendra Pitts early in overtime and then an equally dazzling corner shot by Aida Ierubino two minutes later to win it.
“Going into the corner, I was originally going to lift it because that was working before,” Ierubino said. “Their (flyer) was sprinting at me. I felt the pressure. I just needed to pull around her, and then when I got by her, no one was there, so my first thought was just to shoot it. I put my whole strength into that. It worked out in our favor.”
Ierubino’s laser shot came with 6:58 to go in overtime, propelling the Bucks to the big win.
Earlier, the Bucks took a 2-0 lead into halftime after a nifty passing sequence from Ierubino to Carlista Boos to Zola Morelli for the score. With 47 seconds remaining in the half, Ierubino scored an unassisted goal on strong individual effort.
With no time showing on the clock at the end of the third quarter, the Indians cut that lead in half on goal by Ava Jones during corner play. Jones evened the score with 6:32 remaining in the third quarter, turning a textbook goal on a crossing pass from Tatum Andrews on the left wing into the equalizer that set the stage for overtime.
The Indians – according to the home book – held a 15-9 advantage in shots, an advantage that was negated by the stellar play in goal of Pitts.
Scoring Summary:

CBW – Aida Ierubino from Heidi Schoenleber 6:58
CB West coach Lori Ierubino on the win: “The game was almost like a seesaw. The team that was dominating at the time dominated and had chances. Then it was their turn, and they did that.
“I say this to my friends who coach – I love the competitive games. I’m not so short-sighted that we want to win everything because these competitive games get us ready for districts and states where District 1 has not won in a little while. The stronger these in-conference games are, the better you are when the game’s on the line and the season’s on the line, and you’re playing against really good teams. I’m all for competition, I’m all for good, competitive hockey games, which this was.”
–Props: “Kendra (Pitts) has had a great start to the season. While our defense is young and still working out some kinks. She’s solid big there and letting them grow, and it doesn’t hurt us because she protects us. She’s a rock star. She stuffed them overtime, and we scored soon after that. She’s composed, she’s patient. Even if someone turns the ball over right in front at her and someone comes and zings the ball, she is just positive and encouraging and helps them. There’s growth that has to happen especially because we have a young backfield, and she’s the leader back there that allows them that grace to do that growth.””
CB West goalie Kendra Pitts on her game-saving play in OT: “I saw the one girl unmarked – tough center, and I saw her looking to pass, and I said ‘I’m taking this ball, intercepting the pass.’ It’s just instincts, years of practice. I love to be able to come up from behind and kind of be the underdog. It empowers me to take the opportunity.”
CB West junior Aida Ierubino on seeing Souderton erase a 2-0 West lead: “Going into the game, we knew Souderton is always a very tough contender. They’re a great team, but I guess the frustration that we were up, and they came back – we decided to lift each other up. We all came together as a team.”
–On scoring on a breakaway with 47 seconds left in the half to go up 2-0: “A 1-0 lead doesn’t ever sit right for us. They could easily come back with just one goal, so that goal (before halftime) was definitely a momentum changer although our mindset kind of changed – we went into (the second half) thinking the game was in the bag. We can’t really do that.”
–On goalie Kendra Pitts clutch play in OT: “Oh my god – Kendra is a lifesaver. Since we’ve been freshman to now, she steps up and saves our butt all the time. She played amazing tonight. This game could have gone way in their favor without her. I give her the biggest props for saving us back there.”
–The Souderton rivalry: “It’s awesome. We didn’t really have the best programs a couple of years ago, but we’ve turned it around. It’s so much fun to play them. They’re a great team. It’s always back and forth with us. We go from beating them in the first game last year to them beating us. It’s always back and forth. It’s great competition, and it gets us ready for playoffs.”
Souderton coach Sue Casciato: “Obviously, this game could have gone either way. It’s frustrating because I thought it could have gone either way. In fact, the first half, we had a lot of scoring opportunities, and we weren’t able to capitalize. I think they had two shots and two goals, and we had a lot of balls.
“Obviously, Aida (Ierubino) is an awesome player. She’s tough. We tried to man-mark her, and she still scored two goals.”

Sydney Lafferty broke a scoreless tie with a goal during corner play just over five minutes into the third quarter. Anna Daley assisted, and that 1-0 score stood until the final horn, giving the Patriots their first win of the young season.
The game was evenly played with the Patriots holding a slight edge in shots (9-8) and corners (7-6).
East goalie Bella Craig was credited with nine saves in the shutout.
Scoring Summary:
1st quarter – No score
2nd quarter – No score
3rd quarter
CBE – Sydney Lafferty from Anny Daly off a corner rebound 9:16, 1-0
4th quarter – No score
CB East coach Emma Rosenthal on the game: “The game was intense from start to finish, and I’m proud that we finally came out on top. Statistically, we were pretty even. We had eight shots on goal, they had seven. We had seven corners, they had six. The ball truly ping-ponged the entire time, but we were able to stand strong defensively and limit Pennridge’s amount of chances. The really cool thing about the game tonight was playing against my friend and former JV coach, Elena (Romesburg). The girls were really excited to see her, but we definitely had to make some changes to plays she might’ve been clued in on.”
–Props: “Bella Craig did a great job with nine saves in the shutout. In the midfield, Aly McIsaac, Anna Daly, Sydney Lafferty and Avery McCann did a nice job working it up the field and distributing the ball.”
Pennridge coach Elena Romesburg on the game: “It was a very competitive game, and it came down to a loose ball on a corner rebound. Both teams, I thought, played really great team hockey. I am incredibly proud of the team effort we had in the field, and I think we made strides in building chemistry and figuring out where our strengths are.”
–Props: “Seniors Alyssa Gobrecht and Gianna Nulty stood out today in the midfield and defense respectively as did juniors Lexi Capo, Elsa Parsons, and Suzan Eraydin in the midfield.”

The Knights scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter – the second with just one second showing on the scoreboard clock – to earn a hard-fought road win over the Titans.
Paige Shearer turned a pass from Devon Crowley into a goal that turned out to be the game-winner, finding the cage just over a minute into the fourth quarter. Laura Albert scored as time expired for the 2-0 final.
The Knights held a 15-11 advantage in penalty corners.
Kiley Lucas had four saves in the shutout win. CB South’s Brianna Lucas recorded eight saves in goal.

4th quarter
NP – Paige Shearer from Devon Crowley 13:26 (1-0)
NP – Laura Albert (Kylie Barwis) 0:01 (2-0)
NP coach Shannon McCracken on the game: “Both teams combined for 26 penalty corners, and NP capitalized on their final one at the buzzer to make it a 2-0 victory. CB South’s defense and goalie had a great day, making it challenging for NP to put one in as they turned away many scoring opportunities.
“It was a team effort today as we required fresh legs, so we were happy that our bench was ready to go and played well.”
–The scoring: “North Penn persevered and it took the final quarter to put one on the board. Sophomore Devon Crowley found junior Paige Shearer in the middle of the circle, and Paige lifted it past CB South’s goalie. The second goal came in the final second on a penalty corner – senior Laura Albert with the straight shot and Kylie Barwis with the insert and assist.
–Props: “Junior Kiley Moister was steady in goal, and our defense (junior Tallie Smink, senior Kirstyn Schoppe and sophomore Lily Brown) were able to record the first shutout.”
CB South coach Kelli Chiofe on the game: “The score does not reflect the play of the entire game. NP scored their goals in the final quarter. We had 11 offensive penalty corners against NP and could not execute. Tomorrow at practice, we will make some adjustments and work even harder to get ready for our next game against Souderton.”

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 4, WISSAHICKON 1
The Colonials – sparked by a Gracie Kerns hat trick – bounced back from their loss to Quakertown in their SOL opener to notch a key road game, this despite the fact that they fell behind early.
Kerns evened the score five minutes into the second quarter, and when Emily Dobrowolski scored later in the frame, the Colonials had a lead they would not lose.
“They scored early and took us off guard, but I thought we responded really well today and leaned into what we know our team can do,” PW coach Charise Halteman said.
Kerns finished with a hat trick to lead the attack while Sammy Callan added a goal, and Emily Dobrowolski contributed an assist. Carly Spinner recorded 14 saves in the win for the Colonials.
For the Trojans, Riley Ball scored with a Cami Lutte assist.
Scoring Summary:
First quarter
W- Riley Ball from Cammi Lutte 13:00 (1-0)
PW – Gracie Kerns 10:00 (1-1)
PW – Gracie Kerns from Emily Dobrowolski 5:08 (2-1)
2nd quarter
PW – Sammy Cullen 0:04 (3-1)
3rd quarter
No score
4th quarter
PW – Gracie Kerns 5:40 (4-1)
Coach Charise Halteman on the bounce-back win: “I didn’t think the (3-0) loss to Quakertown was really reflective of our team and what we were capable of. We were all pretty disappointed with that loss. I think we feel like it was more of a mental letdown in that game rather than a skill issue. We had a lot of attacking opportunities and we could not finish against Quakertown, so I felt that was our issue there.
“We addressed some things at the end of practice last week and just really came today with a mindset to compete again, and our emphasis was just playing a really good team game of field hockey. Wissahickon has some really talented players on their team, and we knew that would be a challenge, but we really kept emphasizing that one individual player can sometimes win a game, but teams can win stretches of games and get to championships, so that’s what we’re emphasizing.”
–How they scored: “Wissahickon scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the contest when Riley Ball finished a dangerous attacking play by Camilla Lutte. PW remained composed and made the most of a fast break when Gracie Kerns lifted the ball into the back corner of the net with 10:00 minutes left in the first quarter. The game stayed evenly matched through most of the second quarter until the 5:08 mark when Emily Dobrowolski carried the ball through the center of the field and gave a perfect lead pass to Kerns who was able to finish on a 1v1 with the Wissahickon goalkeeper. Sammy Callan would give the Colonials an insurance goal by finishing a rebound off the pads with four seconds remaining in the second quarter. Kerns would add her third goal of the game on another numbers up opportunity with 5:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. PW continued to play solid defense even as a series of defensive corners ended the game.”
–Keys to the win: “We took advantage of attacking opportunities today and actually finished, unlike our Quakertown game. Once we were able to get behind Wissahickon’s midfield, we found things really opened up for us, and we got a lot of fast break opportunities and numbers up opportunities, and today we were able to finish a lot of them, which is what led to the four goals. That was really good to see.”
–Props: “Our team defense just played really well – communicated their marks well, and even when Wissahickon was putting us under a lot of pressure in the third and fourth quarters, our defense just really maintained their composure. – seniors Ava Matthias and Hadley Blake, juniors Kate Dobrowolski and Ella Bruno and junior goalie Carly Spinner – Again, my defensive corner unit was strong throughout the second half. I thought it was our team defensive approach that allowed our defenders to play a really strong game and put the tackles on their players and just made it really tough for them to score.
“Gracie Kerns had a hat trick, so she was the one finishing and creating some of the fastbreak opportunities, and that was really great.”

The visiting Panthers took a 2-0 lead into halftime as the Hatters – behind the strong play of goalie Mia Fisher – hung tough against the defending SOL Liberty co-champs.
In the second half, the Panthers seized control, sparked by the glittering five-goal effort of Sunny Draper. Emma Stalletti and Penny Longacre each had one goal.
“We played tough in the first half, and Mia Fisher was outstanding the first half,” H-H assistant coach Nicole Miletto said. “Our girls fought hard but couldn’t capitalize on corners.”
Fisher was credited with 15 saves.

Danielle Wilson had herself quite a game, playing a role in all four of the Lions’ goals. The New Hope freshman scored two goals and assisted on the other two.
It was Wilson’s goal with an assist from Gaby Solis in the first quarter that stood as the game-winner. Abby Varghese and Olivia Conte each added a goal in a contest that saw the Lions score one goal in each of the four quarters , and listening to coach Gwen Smith tell it, the Lions had to work for every score.
“UM played well and fought hard,” the Lions’ coach said.
All four New Hope goals were scored ruing corner play.

4th quarter

NH-S coach Gwen Smith:
–Props: “Olivia (Conte) and Abby (Varghese) continue to challenge us and keep our team organized and focused. Danielle Wilson and Emersyn Thistlewaite were a steady presence on the field.”
UM coach Pam Remmey on the game: “Even though the score was not what we wanted, we were happy that we competed with New Hope throughout the game.”
–Props: “Our defensive unit of Izzy Duncan, Kelly Bates, Mackenzie Reilly and Julia Gallen played tough below the 25 to keep New Hope from scoring. Unfortunately, too many fouls were called in our own circle to cause corners. Each of New Hope’s four goals were scored on corners when we were down defenders in our own circle. We did get offensive pushes throughout the contest with Ella Gould and Bridget Hess pushing the ball up to Olivia Torres and MJ Reilly. Charleis Fayall also played well, adding some energy off the bench! Addi Hurley was tough in goal having 9 saves and 3 goals scored against.

After battling to a scoreless halftime tie, the Spartans took a 1-0 lead when Bella Navo scored with an assist from Gracie Buchholz. In the fourth quarter, Navo returned the favor, setting up an insurance goal from Buchholz.
Scoring Summary

4th quarter

Lower Moreland coach Janet Lutter on the game: “Lower Moreland fought hard but came up short. The first half was a great battle between the two with Lower Moreland applying great pressure and moving the ball up the field. Springfield’s Isabella Navo scored with 36 seconds left in the quarter to push the Spartans ahead. That goal in the very last seconds of the quarter took some of our momentum away for sure.
“We came out strong to start the fourth, but with 8 1/2 minutes left, the Spartans scored again. Overall, we played a good game moving the ball and stopping Springfield’s attack. We just came up short and had trouble putting the ball in the net. Our ball movement and overall team play are encouraging this early in the season, especially since Springfield is historically a tough opponent for us.”
